The sopapillas weren't overly filled with honey, but yet if you needed more it was available on the table. Our coffee was nice and strong and kept coming. We tried this restaurant because it is 1 of only a few that have shredded beef (desebrada). The first time we came the food was decent, but the service was abysmal. We decided to give it another try and the food was worse, the service was somewhat better, before we got the bill anyways. When we got the bill they overcharged us. The menu clearly shows desebrada chimichanga is $12.99 and on the bill they charged $12.99 and an extra $1.99. When I showed this to the server she tried to say that was for the guacamole, which was a total fabrication because a) the $1.99 was on the line that says desebrada and b) there was a charge of $1.25 on the line for guacamole. After not accepting this she said "I don't know" and was going to leave it at that until I asked to speak with a manager. The manager had ZERO customer service skills as she started by saying "what's your problem?" I patiently explained the overcharge again and she took out her phone and added the amounts on the bill, she didn't explain why she was doing this, but I assumed it was to check if the $1.99 was actually in the total, and it was. She then said "let me check the computer" and was gone for nearly 10 minutes. When she returned she said the computer is right the ground beef is $12.99 and the desebrada is an additional $1.99. She refused to match the price in the menu and walked away! We won't be back and suggest you don't waste your time, unless you like mediocre Mexican food, terrible service, being charged more than the menu states and having a Manager metaphorically flip you off! read more

I suggested to my wife, after she played pickleball for three hours on a Tuesday morning, that we should head out to Palm Cafe for breakfast instead of "feasting" on toasted panettone bread slices with butter. As tasty as the panettone sounded, I was eager to try out Palm Cafe after someone from church brought their breakfast tacos to a cleaning project we did behind the nearby school a few months ago. The place looked small from the outside but was quite spacious inside. We seated ourselves and were glad we got there shortly after 11:00 AM as the place got busier as the lunch crowd started filing in. We were there to order breakfast but were served some good tortillas chips and salsa. After reviewing the menu, my wife ordered Migas with corn tortillas and I ordered Huevos Rancheros with flour tortillas (my go-to Mexican breakfast). My wife also ordered coffee with her meal. Food came fast. My dish was good, refried beans were flavorful and the fried potatoes were good. My wife liked her migas but thought the one she orders from Casa Maria is better. While the flour tortilla seemed home made the corn tortillas didn't seem like they were home made and wife prefers the corn tortillas from Lupe's Tortilla. All in all, a good brunch. Usually a solid fan, tonight was as good as it gets. The kitchen closes the last hour, so don't leave it too late. Arrived around 7.30pm Thursday and there were less than half a dozen tables of customers, plenty of seats to choose from. I'd strong-armed Mr R into trying a torta because he was hungry and the tortas here are 1. Huge 2. Bargain priced and 3. Delicious. He got a monster torta, I got a sour cream enchilada plate, we each had big ol' half liter Mexican cokes and after tax it was still under $19. Winning all over the place. He was so ecstatic with that sammy and the pile of jalapeños it came with that I had to remind him several times that other humans could see him and could he please remember to chew. My sour cream enchiladas were wonderfully spicy compared to what I get elsewhere. There's one spicy and one nondescript plate on the menu, so I may have inadvertently ended up with the spicy version. Then again, maybe the spicy one would have set my hair afire, I don't yet know. But I plan on finding out. Super polite waitstaff, great flavor and value for money. read more

From the outside I didn't expect too much from this place ( besides the outstanding recommendations my friends had for it.) It looks pretty run down, and inside is your typical Mexican restaurant atmosphere . Since I've only eaten here one time in the 20 years I lived here, I can't comment on the entire menu. However, the beef skirt quesadillas I had were PHENOMENAL. And since I'm a broke college student , the $7 price tag for the Combo plate made my wallet scream with joy!! Everything on the menu was extremely reasonably priced ( I don't recall seeing anything on breakfast/ lunch menu over $10.) And on top of that the quality of the food was awesome !!! The complimentary chips and salsa were also delicious ( I recommend the green salsa, tons of flavor not too much heat.) Restaurant is located just a little outside of town. Parking is not as good especially during peak hours so get there earlier than usual. Mexican, Tex-Mex, and American food is offered so a pretty good mix. Canned and bottled drinks available. They offer Mexican drinks. I have ordered different dishes and all the meals are pretty tasty. Tacos are good. In this visit you can see what was ordered. I believe that the portion sizes are good, pricing is decent, and the staff are very friendly and courteous. If you are looking for a fast, simple meal in the area, come here and get yourself taken care of. My to go meal here is the tortilla soup but they don't serve it on Saturdays. This place has great quality food, customer service and delicious yummy food! I had the Palm plate special and it was awesome! This probably the first time I ever eat and a Mexican restaurant and their pancakes taste Delicious as well! They have great tasting flour tortillas! I love my tortillas to be fluffy and thick not the paper thin ones and these were it!! Homemade and amazing!!! The food was delicious cooked to perfection! Our server didn't give us enough straws and when i asked for one she said she would be back with one and I never got one. I ordered the "biggest burrito in town" the bobcat special or something like that. I got shredded chicken. The chicken was very dry but had some flavor. You start with fresh tortilla chips that are still warm and also delicious with salsa that is hotter than your average Tex-Mex salsa, which makes it *even tastier.* The portions are generous without being over-sized, and the lunch plates all come with really delicious beans and rice. This particular time I got the Palm Plate, which was two enchiladas, a taco, and a chalupa. The crunchy beef taco was delicious--juicy and flavorful--and also crunchy. So too were the enchiladas and chalupa. In addition, my wife shared her desabrada with me and oh my goodness, the meat was spicy, seasoned, and so very, very tasty. I washed everything down with a Mexican Coke and left completely satisfied. (My wife says that my enchilada was too salty, but I strongly disagree with her judgment as to what is tasty--as usual. I am an Uber driver and I drive in San Marcos everyday during the morning. I believe I have tried just about every breakfast taco in town. Today I decided to give the Palm Cafe a try. Let me tell you, they have now set the gold standard for breakfast tacos in San Marcos. They were absolutely wonderful and I asked for some green salsa that they keep in a little crockpot and it was so fantastic on the breakfast tacos. The cheesy sour cream chicken enchiladas were full of white meat chicken and super yummy with beans and rice a full plate of food for 7.99. Home made chips and salsa refilled with a pitcher of salsa and wet burritos and spicy enchiladas as well. My husband made huevos rancheros out of my left over enchiladas this morning yum yum.
