Rex's on Pacific in San Pedro is the place to go for an unbelievable breakfast experience. From the ever changing eclectic decor--they decorate for most holidays--to the absolutely delightful team, Rex's sets the standards for breakfast, brunch and lunch. (Note they close at 2:00). I have taken many of my State Farm clients here simply because I know without a doubt they will be blown away by the service and dishes. We drive all the way from Long Beach.
I have been dining at Rex's since it opened and have enjoyed breakfast there easily 200 times. Rex's team is like family. I have had so many unique experiences there. Here is a great example. Everybody at Rex's knows I always get my bagels to go so I can to my son Ian. I parked a couple 100 feet away on this particular day. I got in my car, heard some calling to me, looked in my review mirror, and a Rex's team member was running up my car with my bagel in a brown paper bag. How fantastic is that? She knew Ian, she knew how the bagel makes his morning, and she saved the day. I am seeing so much of humanity shift away from human relations...what an act of kindness. As he ate his bagel that morning, I shared the story with him. I let him know it takes and a special person to do something like this. Ian grew from acknowledging her well-doing. Sometime after that Ian was with me and I introduced him to her..."Ian this is the wonderful person who chased after me so you could have your bagel." How cool.
One great attribute of Rex's and its team: you can break the rules on the menu. Their menu is outstanding to begin with. But they bend over backwards to accommodate Ian and I...everybody. I am allergic to any melon, they mix in other fruits. Recently, Ian wanted a California Omelet and a pancake. A lot of places would have done it as a side order. Rex's team member suggested Ian substitute the pancake for toast. Right on! By the way, their pancakes are not only out of this world but are so big there have their gravitational pull. I have no idea how Ian can polish off a generous omelet and a monolithic pancake. He has the build of a chopstick, where does all the food go? The Greek and Veggie omelets are my two current favorites. They have a chalkboard where the post the specials, and I always check there first. Today one of the dishes had a pico de gallo sauce. I asked if I could have it instead of Rex's superb salsa. The team member brought me both. (The pico de gallo at Rex's will excite your spice buds--good and hot) To Rex's Greek omelet I have added as many as five or six custom items for a fair and nominal price. As far as I know Rex's will put anything on their diverse menu into an omelet.
When it gets busy and customers have to wait, Jose the greeter will bring coffee outside for the guests. Jose knows everyone. As soon as he sees me he shouts out "Hey amigos," and comes over and shakes my hand and hugs me. He is so friendly and really treats everybody like family. If it is possible for a person to be two places at one time, Jose is the man. He moves quick in, out and around the tables he is on roller-skates. Jose, like several of the Rex's team members, has been at Rex's for years. Low turnover tells me a bunch about management, team synergy, and environment. The Rex's team always seems unhurried, relaxed, and to having a really good time. Come to think of maybe I can work at Rex's for free just to somehow harness positive energy.
Rex's rocks and then some! The atmosphere, the team, the people, the décor...so much fun-ness. (I think I just made up a new word.) I always leave feeling great. Give this place a try you will love it.
Update 8/20/2011
I took my great friend Dario along with best friend David Johns. Had a great breakfast. Everybody was so nice. i told my server: "surprise me with what ever you think is the ultimate omelet. She knows me pretty well. It was yummy and I think the chef put everything on the menu on my custom omelet, and it was dynamite. Dario is from Vegas and he loved it. It was Dario's first time.
