This is my 3rd time here. The times prior left me wishing I had come in earlier because of how full the place was. The place is a home converted into a restaurant. It's tiny. I did like the place and wanted to give it a fair review so I went in at 7am this morning. We arrived, stood by the door waiting to be seated. There were 2 LAPD officers and us. I asked the waitress cheerfully if we can sit anywhere and she replied that we could. She brought menus and I decided on a cafe mocha and asked if there was a way to just have chirizo and eggs? She suggested eggs any style (7.50) and I could select chirizo as my side. Well, being Mexican I requested they fry my chirizo with onions. It was a craving. The waitress was so stubborn, she kept trying to dissuade me from it, telling me she's never heard of that before and she'll ask cook "if it was possible." I didnt understand, I was bewildered and it showed on my face, how not? I answered that I would pay extra. I didn't mind. I thought to myself, I wasn't asking them to taint the whole batch. I just want grilled onions mixed in my chorizo. Well, I finally gave in and said well, if cook cannot comply, no worries and to just bring me some white toast. I asked for cafe mocha. As I sat waiting, near a speaker, the radio was blaring so loud, I couldn't hear my friend speak, so we moved to a table closer to the counter and away from noise. She worked on the drinks and brought one out and then an ice cream shake. Mind you she asked me if I wanted whip on my coffee and proceded to bring a "crazy mocha." A cold shake, and it's 43 degrees out? Of course, once again with a look of bewilderment stared at her. And she smiling ear to ear asked, "you did order a crazy mocha?" I said no, "a cafe mocha", she argued " no, a crazy mocha", again. I rationalized this, VERY TIRED OF HER, and said "it must have been that you didn't hear me., the radio was so loud, that's why we moved over here." The owner had arrived and also stared at me, the situation was intense. She took it back, and by now, I just wanted to leave. I was tired of this waitress in a bad mood and the owner(I think/an older waitress) doing nothing about it. She brought coffee and my friends food. So, I waited for my food and she asked me what kind of bread for my toast, again. I said white, she brought WHEAT. At this point I knew I was in the Twilight Zone. I asked my friend if he thought I had been rude and deserved this somehow? He was confused and couldn't understand why this waitresses behaved this way. She just hated me, and went out of her way to bring me the wrong food items with a chesire smile! He didn't know what to think, and the last thing to finally convince him that she was playing a game of cat & mouse with me was the coffee, and his hot chocolate. He's prediabetic, so, since my cafe mocha was practically half water, I asked him to swap with me. I tasted his his and it was worse!!! I was done and paid the bill and left NO TIP in protest to her deliberately rude behavior. She looked Mexican, she was young, tan/dark skin, big lips, thin, and had long dark hair and sounded like a valley girl. She never gave her name and behaved as though she felt beneath serving tables and much less a Mexican. It was an ugly feeling. I guess I didn't see the sign hidden somewhere " No Mexicans." Mind you, the majority of the patronage is diverse but mostly white when full. We left full cups of watered down drinks. It was 43 degrees out at 7 am and really I wished for a hot meal in a quiet place which is why we were there at 7am. I will NEVER patronize this establishment again and suggest you think twice before you go and not let this uppity waitress get the better of you if you do. She ruined my craving for Rex's Cafe, and singlehandedly cured me of ever wanting to go back in there. The older waitress who was there has been good in past visits but this time she just watched, did nothing to help and we didn't even get a thank you when we walked out. Our bill was $26.26 for a chorizo scrambler, two eggs any style and two cafe's. The cafe tasted like they warmed Swiss Miss and served it with too much water, dallop of whip cream and a dash of chocolate syrup. So bad. I couldn't believe this happened. This review was not intended as revenge, hopefully, the owner(s) will read and see how a staffer can push good customers away and ruin a small business. A one star was given for the place being clean, and the food ok, but the staff was rude, and treated me like I was out of place just because I was so brazen in asking for some grilled onions. Watch out people, remember the soup Nazi on Seinfeld? That can happen! read more
