Really good ambience really good drinks terrible food terrible location. Also the price does not match what you actually receive

Came here for brunch before heading over to the Cirque show (Totem) at the LA Port. Less than 10 minutes from the port. This place is located in residential area so it might be a little hard to find. Just make sure you keep your eyes open for the large "Rex's Café" on the front of the building. There's plenty of street parking if you don't mind parking a little further away. Cafe is not big. It is nicely decorated with an autumn theme, using a color scheme of orange, red, and brown. Being that it's a smaller place, it is pretty cozy and gives you that Sunday laziness feel to it. You know that feeling of sleeping in, going to grab some breakfast, and just hanging around and doing nothing for the rest of the day. Now on with the food. BF ordered the Greek omelette, which has spinach, cheese, and mushrooms. Also came with a bowl of fresh fruit, 2 slices of toast (you have an option of toast, english muffin, or biscuit), butter and jam. The omelette was good, the right amount of flavor, not bland or too salty. Also not overly cooked. The omelette I had at another place a week earlier was really bland so I appreciated that this omelette wasn't like that. The fruit was sweet. I ordered the stuffed french toast. The french toast was stuffed with cream cheese and had a generous amount of fresh strawberry slices piled on top. It was quite good, although the best french toast I had was this small cafe in west LA. Now as I'm writing this I have a craving for it lol. This place is kind of a far drive for the BF, so we probably won't be driving out there just for the food. But if we were in the area, I would come back to try other items on their menu. read more

Used to love this place but ever since they opened back up after the pandemic first hit the food has been mediocre. My french toast was chewy and over cooked. The eggs tasted like paper and the cook got my order wrong. read more

I came for breakfast with a few girlfriends after a hike, and it was pretty busy. It seemed like a lot of locals come here and it has a diner feel. We shared a few items, but I really enjoyed the breakfast wrap. Their stuffed banana french toast was also pretty good. The stuffing was a blend of cream cheese and banana which made it rather light. The pictures of their muffins looked so good so we ordered a banana nut muffin but it was kind of dry. Overall, a good diner spot for breakfast. read more

Very cool breakfast place near the San Pedro port. Great atmosphere! Their coffee was unique and awesome: Light, yet with a broad flavor range and earthy more typical of Central American coffee. Couldn't get enough! I got the Stuffed French Toast. Nice fresh strawberries and bananas on top. It was Very good, but didn't blow me away like some of the other reviewers were saying. Found this breakfast gem by driving by and checking on Yelp. True, not a great neighborhood but not bad. For goodness sakes, it's the morning you Yelpers who fear the shadows! Also a short drive from the Doubletree. Parking was easy on a Weekday morning and we were seated immediately. Extensive menu for eggs and pancakes. I ordered the California omelet which included bacon, cheese , mushrooms, spinach and topped avocado. I switched out the sour cream for salsa. Just an amazing omelet. Also, They don't add extra salt to their food. I selected the fruit side which had fresh melon, pineapple, grapes, strawberries and kiwi. And a fresh homemade blueberry almond muffin, which is a meal, on itself. Prices are reasonable and service was excellent. read more

Not a great day at Rex's... Asked for no whipped cream .. got it anyway. Asked for hash browns to be well done and got them barely browned. Got two of three breakfast at table and practically finished the first two before our guest's arrived. To their credit (and our) they owed up and took 20% off of it for being no late. Usually they're much better than this but they busy as it is Saturday. read more

Took my Nana, out for breakfast the other day and i must say the breakfast i had was amazingly delicious. Everything was neatly done and well organized. The place is like a lil cottage. Very homie. And the workers there are very nice. I ordered a California Omelette and i ate all of it. Sooo good. Coffee is fresh and it always smells good in there. read more

Point blank: go for the food because the service is utter trash. Servers need to handle their stress, attitude and be honest with their managers/ owners about how much work they can *actually* handle. I'm a server. And, I understand 3 BASIC THINGS: 1 shifts are busy, 2 guests are often needy and 3 tips are how you make your money. This spot is popular. It's often hard to get a table and a parking spot. Come ready to wait. Ask for everything up front: creamer, napkins, sauces, extra anything... they will NOT come back after the first round of drinks unless they are carrying your food. Expect to be treated rudely, expect to be rushed and expect to mostly be ignored by staff unless you are ordering or paying. The servers here can not handle more than one or two tables. The place is tinnnnny and even with 3-4 servers AND A BUSSER they can't manager to refill drinks or even be polite. The food is BOMB-- so maybe order "to go" so you only have to deal with the rude staff for like 3 minutes? read more

My coworkers and I were on a break and stumbled on this little gem. Very welcoming and cozy. Our waitress Maggie was very polite and gave many options. I ordered the pancakes, eggs and sausage with a glass of lemonade. Delicious! The pancakes were fluffy and flavorful and the lemonade taste fresh. The California omelet is amazing. Everything here is amazing. The muffins are delicious. The tomatillo salsa verde is so flavorful too. They make latte art that is so cool. Really good breakfast place in not a very nice neighborhood, but most of the time that's where you find the really delicious hole in the wall places. The portions are good, reasonable prices and staff is very straight forward in a nice way. Come early on weekends or you'll be waiting outside for awhile since there isn't really a waiting area inside. read more

There and back in a flash with the cash, and they even offered me free coffee to go as I paid. I had breakfast here end of April. The number one advice I have is you only need one, I repeat ONE, pancake. They are HUGE and are good. I ordered two not knowing and couldn't finish them. Number two piece of advice is get a smoothie. I had the blueberry and it was amazingly good. Great friendly speedy service. It's a cop hang out, in my book that's a plus. And prices are good too. Next time I stay a couple nights in Doubletree hotel before a cruise I'll be going to Rex's for breakfast. read more

We ordered the Mexican coffee and the French toast with eggs and bacon combo. It was enough for two to split if you're not super hungry. Very tasty!! The coffee was very good and not overly sweet and the French toast was made with whole wheat bread with was a pleasant surprise. Eggs and bacon were cooked great also!
