A nice rep theatre that offers a great variety of programming. I try to make it out a few times a year for Godzilla & Die Hard screening. It's fun! Having paid a quasi-sawbuck & fin, i 'd 've appreciated NOT having to plug my ears during the movie --- given how the ridiculous volume level ultimately 'pains' one (withal) --- despite my haphazard attempts at shrugging it off as a 'fleeting irritation' (...in the same veign as a momentary ambulance, else firetruck; + keep in mind i 've travelled to cities thruout N. America & abroad whereas Toronto ALREADY has the 'screechiest' firetrucks + ambulances the world over; ...likely a leftover from a century back wherein NO ONE ever bothered turning 'sirens' down a notch)! Nonetheless, what REALLY hurt is when I 'd requested (+ congenially, at that) that they kindly 'tone it down' (almost mid-way-thru) --- whereupon they in-fact DID NOT; whereupon i again inquired as per just 'why' (mid-way) wherein the gentleman gruffly retorted how "There 's no one else complaining" --- ...(to wit): i.e.: everyone else is TOO COURTEOUS to want to stand-out-in-the-crowd + 'impose' on 'gruff(?)' cine-site 'arbitrators' who alone get to decree just how + when anyone 'll experience a sub-titled showing-per-se! I 'd imparted how 'sound' is (ideally) an 'art' which should 'intrigue you' by starting off low (i.e.: 'tickling your ear AND mental palette') whereby it then 'grows' on you incrementally. ALL art --- if IN YOUR FACE; whether sound or visual --- is SHEER NOISE & STATIC! Incidentally: I 'd given up after my 2nd attempt at communicating, seeing as it seemed apparent I was merely being regarded as a 'nuisance'; notwithstanding how I frequent various cinemas + seldom complain! read more

The Revue is a wonderful, community owned non-profit of a theater with a well-priced concession stand that includes great beer. Even if it's "just" something as simple as a door raffle, they make the effort to create a fun, communal viewing experience the likes of which you're unlikely to get at the bigger places. Plus, it's in Roncy! Why not grab dinner at one of the dozens of beautiful bars & restaurants nearby before or after the movie? I arrived to Toronto five months ago, but I can say with certainty that this is one of my fav places in the city. I so adore the look and feel of this cinema, it has such a special atmosphere and a great history behind it. I recently learned that it was closed in 2006 and reopened / redecorated by the people of Roncesvalles one year after, in 2007. After that, it was turned into a not-for-profit cinema until nowadays. Event planning is spot on. I had the pleasure of attending the Oscars event and it was organized with so much love. We had special cocktails available, nice hot chocolate for 3$ a cup, Oscar-shaped chocolates, an Oscar bingo, some trivia questions, prizes... I had so much fun, it was the perfect way to enjoy the awards to the max. In fact I fell in love with the place. You don't care about the Oscars or about modern cinema? Don't worry, The Revue cinema does not forget about any community and focuses on offering a variety of events for every taste and age. They have screenings for parents & babies, they organized a Syrian cinema night to support refugees, a year-round dedicated selection of silent films with live music, several events during march that feature musicals (Funny Face, Top Hat...), and a long etc. Torontonians, go to this cinema! The Revue Cinema is a wonderful part of the Roncy community. Old school, through and through. They show regular new-ish films, but still have lots of old movie nights, kids programming on the weekends and are just a fun place to go for a few hours! Their concessions are old school: popcorn, nachos and candy. But, hallelujah, if you're sitting through a movie with a toddler, they also have a liquor license. read more

It's a great local theatre with lots of variety of films and you are supporting part of Toronto history too! Easy to book tickets but if you really want to see the film be sure to book in advance as films are often sold out. Think about the demographics for the film. If it's animated there may be many families or birthday parties with younger children and they are not that interested really in watching the film - which can be expected but you will be constantly disturbed. Went to see Kiki's Delivery Service dubbed version and children were everywhere and often stand up to watch the film, it's sweet really but if you want to hear or see the film without these disruptions (parents fetching toddlers who were literally rolling down the aisles during the film) then consider the demographic. The audiences are really great but will change depending of course on the movie. It's quite clean but there are noticeable large spider webs hanging from the lamps on the sides of the walls. Toilets are kept clean and stocked during the film and staff are always super friendly. Not supposed to bring your own food. They have silent movies which are really fun and often have speakers and musically accompaniment for the occasional film. I have been going to this theatre since the 1980's and encourage everyone to experience the Revue. It's easy to get to with access from the Dundas West subway station or the dundas street car. They replaced the seats a number of years ago but they are starting to show wear and tear and really are not that comfortable. read more

Let's support this place. Why? Because I am a fan of supporting our local, sometimes Art Deco, almost-heritage-yet-always-in-danger-of-being-turned-into-a-condo-or-book-store movie theatres. The Revue was in danger before, in fact I used to live in the hood when it was closed and dropped by to see a few movies not too long after it reopened 5-6 years ago thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers who run it. You have got to respect their commitment.. The décor is looking better then back then, as it recently received a new coat of paint which sprouts up the place. Granted the screen is not the biggest in town but you also do not pay as much and at least for me, I do appreciate the south of mainstream niche that independent theatres cater to. Their selection of mostly 2nd run high-quality films, classics, foreign movies instead of reels upon reels of stuff mindlessly blowing up or ridden with romantic cliches is a welcome one. In fact I was just there to watch a rare screening of The God Of Ramen, sponsored by the Japanese Foundation which included a Japanese tasting at the venue with sushi and other treats. As a whole it is a great place to drop by, not only to watch a movie but also to get a peek at the history these venues offer not only to the neighbourhood, the community but Toronto as a whole. Lived in the area years ago, and for some reason never visited (but did get a chance to see flicks at the Royal and other Toronto independent cinemas). This one was a tidy, welcoming and cozy experience. Was here for a private event, but the staff were friendly, service was quick and theatre was clean. They seem to have a great calendar of movies and given the close-knit Roncey neighbourhood, there are loads of dinner-and-a-movie date night options. Forget Netflix and Chill, come to Revue and unwind! read more

A year after being saved from extinction, the Revue is back in full swing! An early and a later show every night, great flicks and all at a not-for-profit enterprise. Tickets are $12.50 for non-members, BUT you automatically become a member for 6 months after you visit the first time (from that point on, it's only $6.50!). Tuesday's are $5, and Sunday matinees are too....which means you can go watch "Scrooged" for $5 on the big(er) screen the Sunday before Christmas. Ebenezer approves! read more

So glad this cinema exists! We became bronze members on our first visit - what a super deal for $45! This entitles you to one free event, 4 free movies, 4 free popcorns, plus discounts on regular movie prices. So far we've been to two of the Rendezvous with Madness Film Festival films, attended a free Halloween movie night, and attended two first-run films. The seats are really comfortable, the projection and sound are good, staff is friendly, and the place draws a good crowd that likes watching movies. The popcorn is really delicious! There's beer, too. Once we went as a foursome and I re-upped our beers during the movie. The person working the counter actually walked with me in the dark to deliver the other two I couldn't carry (apparently, it's their policy to let movie-goers walk with 2 drinks at a time only... but I just thought it was nice!) In a perfect world, the Revue would run more special events and old / weird movie picks than first-run offerings, but I'll take what I can get (and I must say the first-run films we've seen here have been excellent). The streetcar drops you off right out front, so getting there is no problem, and the fact that there's lots to eat and drink in the neighborhood before / after movies rubs off nicely on this charming cinema as well. Small local cinemas for the win...even though I didn't visit the Revue to see a movie. The theatre runs a number of movie themed events out of this space, and my first visit had me attending the Feminist Live Read of Mean Girls. It's small, the chairs are old and super springy so they're basically like rocking chairs, and they have booze. I got a small popcorn and a tall can of Steam Whistle for probably less than I would pay for a small popcorn and a small pop at your Cineplexes of the world. Plus the staff are nice and it seems like they are working hard to keep this piece of Toronto history shiny and nice, while still retaining some aspects of its past that keep it interesting. read more

Programming makes a real effort to find something that appeals to everyone, like extra matinees on PA days for the kids, midday movies for young parents with babies, artsy fartsy foreign films, docs, festivals you name it! Even their e-newsletter reviews that arrive weekly in your inbox are the tops (and never reveal the spoliers either!) A real effort has been made to keep the old girl cleaner, comfier and more welcoming, and it's working. A real alternative to the suburban big box experience... no cookie cutter promo machine here. When we moved out of the Annex, I lamented not living near the Bloor Cinema - our theatre of choice for 2nd-Run-Movies (who can afford movies when they first come out, anyhow?). Cue the Revue (ta-da!) The prices are totally decent - $7 with membership. & it is just a stone's throw away. The seats are super plush & while the prices of popcorn & candy aren't a bargain - it feels good to know you're supporting the Revue directly. They also have specialty runs - for instance, their Spielberg Summer Flicks - which give you a chance to see some of your favorites on the big screen. read more

I love this place, It's a small neighborhood, second run theater that also doubles as an art house cinema. The ticket prices are very reasonable, and it presents a great opportunity to see some movies on the big screen that you may never otherwise have the chance. For instance, I recently saw Hitchcock's Rear Window - released before I was born, I don't know when I otherwise may have ever seen it in a theater. I also love the Roncy strip on which the Revue resides. There is the Local tavern next door, and a jazz club across the street. There are some wonderful book shops and cafes along that strip as well. It all makes for a nice "destination" outing, if you want to kill a few hours poking around in shops, eating and drinking before or after a film. Long live the Revue! read more

Ah the Revue what is there to say really? This is the best little independent cinema going in my opinion. This not for profit community driven theater makes it fun and engaging to go every time. Their monthly schedules are always A+ with movies for everyone. It's never hard to find a night where something interesting isn't playing. However it's much more than that! They have many additions to their screenings other than just the movie itself. Whether it's a drunken cinema night, a 3D family movie, question and answer sessions or the many other things they do this place really has it all for the movie lover. read more

It helps if the films being shown are good because they have only the one screen. It is cheaper than most other cinemas but obviously thats because this is a second run place. As I type this for instance I have noticed that sod-all is on worth watching... and wont be for the next 10 days. Typically the popcorn etc seems a bit overpriced. It is nice to support local places and I will generally go a few times per month... you may see me hobbling down the street to the Intersteer after the movie to drink and deaden the pain from having to sit in those awful seats. read more

The Revue has a fantastic array of films, festivals, speciality nights, etc. The atmosphere is vintage, classy, and intimate as it only has the one screen. The programming is appropriate for all ages, and film enthusiasts new and old. In traditional bijoux-style theatre style, the cinema only has one screen - but don't let this fool you! Films are still fresh and updated. The cinema is a second run place, meaning, if you missed it at the AMC or Cineplex, the Revue will now have it - and for cheaper! The prices are decent, however, speciality days are slightly more expensive (but still reasonably priced). I attended a "Silent Sunday" event a couple months back and I can tell you honestly it was one of the most enjoyable film experiences I have had (and I'm in film school!). There was a live pianist playing the piano as we watched vintage Little Rascals and Buster Keaton films. It was fantastic! The food prices are, however, not as discounted as the films they show, but still reasonably priced - especially for an independent place. It is most certainly worth your while and the trek to Dundas West station and through Roncy construction. I would recommend "Silent Sundays" for sure. read more

The story of the Revue Cinema is like something out of a Frank Capra film. A few years ago, it was part of the Festival Cinemas network of second-run theatres in Toronto, but then the chain shut down. There was a community outcry, and this theatre was saved; now it's locally-run and not-for-profit. The venture has been successful enough that they're commissioning architects to redesign the facade soon. The Revue still sticks to the basic formula of second-run theatres, with a few classics thrown in. Understandably, the day-to-day selection of movies isn't as varied as it was when they were shared between the Festival Cinemas: I doubt the days of midnight shows of Drunken Master 2 will be coming back. But the Revue remains an essential alternative to the crass path the big cinemas have been following over the last fifteen years. read more

Another of the revived festival cinemas, The Revue has an excellent selection of films, both new and old. Occasionally they'll have free films targeted toward kids, or other events, like an evening of old commercials. They do a good job on keeping the programming fresh and accessible to the average patron. Once you get a membership (which lasts about 6 months) the prices are in the $6 range, making this a very affordable option. Everyone who works here is really cool. Well, they're cool except when the popcorn machine breaks. When that happens, they're stressed. The concession also offers coffee and tea, which is I think is great, because sometimes that's exactly what you want with a movie. A neighbour hood theatre with heart and a dying breed of cinema. Seeing a movie here feels like being transported back to the days of old where cinema was magic for movie-goers. I went here on the holidays to see Denis Villeneuve's 'The Arrival' with a full house seated and I had an amazing experience. Silent films introduced by intriguing hosts with live piano accompaniment, food-centric films with delicious food served at the screening as well as quality screenings presented nightly by a courteous pleasant staff who clearly love film. Revue Cinema is a wonderful not for profit heritage community theatre. I believe it is one of the oldest running movie cinemas in the country. The build form pays homage to old school movie theatres and the building has been designated a historical landmark. Prices are very reasonable and the charm of the building makes your movie going experience priceless. The movies they screen are always pretty interesting. Often they screen old classics which allows viewers the opportunity to see and be exposed to Hitchcock or Polanski on the big screen...thus potentially open the minds of a younger generation to older film classics. This is the second oldest, operational theatre in North America. It is a gem in the middle of a thriving community. Its one of the few theatres that will screen classic movies. Not your typical theatre with video games, noise and neon. Don't be surprised if you actually find people watching film instead of taking calls on mobile phones or talking, like in other larger big-box theatres. read more
