My first official screening at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival happened at Scotiabank Theatre. One of five venues used to showcase films during the festival, this multiplex housed the majority of all screenings among its 14 auditoriums with an approximate seating capacity range from 100-500. Formerly the Paramount Theatre Toronto, this complex opened in 1999 but was sold by the parent company Viacom to a group later to be named Cineplex Entertainment in 2005. The result was a rebranding of the name to Scotiabank Theatre Toronto under a sponsorship arrangement with Scotiabank. Would I scoot my way to the bank after the many films watched here!? PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): I was constantly in the area all day throughout the Toronto International Film Festival, so I simply walked. Otherwise, there were spots along the many main and surrounding streets, some nearby structures, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Generally speaking, this was your standard multiplex theatre filled with cushy cup holding reclining seats, very good sound system, and auditorium seating so no one blocked your view. Out of the theatres, you had a large concession stand, a separate Melts and Starbucks stand, in addition to a decent-sized bar dining area. Pretty good theatre complex in downtown Toronto. What they offer: - concession stands for snacks (and yes they are pretty high priced but that's pretty much everywhere. - some games - regular movie theatres - specialty movie theatres including a huge IMAX auditorium plus 3D, Dbox etc. and sight line seating - recommend getting signed up for Scene rewards program. You can collect points which can be used towards movies, snacks and more at Cineplex properties. - easily accessible by TTC, parking garage right next door too. I'm reviewing this theatre in May 2025. I feel like this location has definitely improved since I last visited a couple of years ago. There is a good amount of food options inside, the staff was efficient, and the theatre I was in was quite clean and modern. I went to a regular admission theatre and the seats were still quite comfortable. The bathrooms are still quite dirty and grimy though. There is a nice lounge area with some big TV's right when you walk in. There's a photo booth too and a gaming area on the bottom floor. Overall, it's a pretty decent and modern theatre located very centrally downtown. Cineplex definitely has some somewhat questionable business practices though with their online booking fee, the never ending price increases, and the fact that you "need" to get the Cineclub to get 20% off concession food (which is still overpriced even with the discount). Cineplex does have promos occasionally, so I'd definitely recommend waiting for those. read more

My husband and I went to see the movie Smile here and it was my first time at this cinema. The Scotiabank theatre is in a really buzzing area with tons of food establishments in the surrounding vicinity so absolutely perfect for a good evening out! Armed with a hot coffee to keep me warm ( Tim Hortons is only outside) we headed in for the movie. Snacks are super expensive, as per normal, but there's some good deals for popcorn and treats. There's plenty to keep you entertained before or even after the movie with an arcade downstairs and plenty of snacks. The actual theatre is massive with tons of seating however we were sat quite high and didn't realize the screen isn't actually as big as the theatre. So I'd recommend sitting a little lower! I have been to Scotiabank Theatre a number of times over the years. Most of the time, I'm here with a friend. I had one corporate event when I worked downtown, so I walked from Bay and Front over here. I have noticed recently that I tend to visit movie theatres with a bookstore close by. Chapters used to be next door to this theatre. It closed down years ago and has been replaced by a giant Michaels. Perhaps that's one reason why I haven't been to this one in ages. Last Thursday, I was in the area and parked in the lot connected to Scotiabank Theatre. Although I didn't take in a movie, I went over to the theatre to take a look. This place has one of the longer escalators that you'll find to get to and from the ticketing area and movie theatres. I have always enjoyed the ride up. I have been fortunate to not use the stairs up. I don't mind walking down them, though! This Cineplex is a wheelchair-accessible venue, from the theatres themselves, to the washrooms. The theatres are roomy for my liking. I hope that it's the case still. I don't recall any perks that I got from the corporate event. I don't even think that we got popcorn, which was a bummer. I love popcorn so much. I've never said no to getting popcorn here. I do like the parking lot. There's a maximum rate of $10 on weeknights. It's not bad if you plan on taking in a movie and having a bite to eat in the area. There are plenty of eateries to choose from. I haven't seen a movie in a theatre for nearly two years. I honestly can't think of another theater downtown that matches the IMAX screens they have at this location. In terms of movie watching experience for sound and sights, it doesn't get better than this. This one doesn't have the VIP theaters but they do have food options that can make your movie night tastier. It has the same options as other Cineplexes like Melt and Starbucks. This one is quite grand with the extremely tall escalator when you first get in. It actually gives me a bit of vertigo if I'm looking all the way down lol. The opposite happened in the theater. We were unfortunately seated at the very front row (we came late) and I had to crane my neck up the other way. Good balance at least! read more

The theatre can easily be accessed by subway (Osgoode Station) and there ample parking available in the area if you're driving there (parking option is not cheap at all). You get mixed feelings from the staff; it seems like some of them don't care at all/ don't know what they're doing and some are very friendly and helpful. The place is well-maintained and the each theatre has comfy chairs. Something that makes it easier for everyone to enjoy the place is if everyone would take their garbage outside with them and throw them in the garbage bin. It seems as though a lot of people don't like this theatre. I didn't have any issues. Right when you enter the building there is the rather intimidating set of stairs you can attempt to go up or maybe you feel like the escalator is more your thing. The stairs aren't that bad though ;). Upstairs you have the option of not speaking to another human to purchase your tickets at a machine or even on your phone. However I found that the staff that I got my tickets from wasn't that bad. He helped me with 2 free admissions and using my gift card. We didn't purchase any food from the concession stand but kinda regretted it in the theater when we could smell the butter wafting off other people's popcorn. read more

Dislike this theatre a lot. I used to attend a lot of screenings and half of the time, the escalators wouldn't work. Imagine having to trek all the way up. I didn't expect a workout before a movie. The worse is to get there by public transit. You get off the subway and have to rush over two full blocks outside to get to the theater to make to the movie on time .Imagine when it is -20 degree Celsius and super cold. One time, me and my friend were stuck at the theater as it was raining so much and with no umbrella, we ended up taking a taxi just for two blocks to get to the subway. There are limited washrooms and always a line up. There is paid parking at the theater but parking is very pricey. Read the news that this theater is finally closing down.. Thank god it was about time! Time for them to move over to a more convenient location... maybe take over the sears old building? read more

Covid-19 precautions are too relaxed at this location in my opinion. I decided not to attend the show this afternoon after seeing the theater I would be sitting in. Individuals were spaced two seats apart from each other. A theater seat is anywhere between 19-22" wide. Even with two seats between us on the wider side (let's say, 44" total to be generous here), that's still less than the recommended 2 meters or 6 feet of distance. There was someone sitting in front of me in the row ahead of mine, and someone sitting directly to my right behind me. In the past, the theater assigned seats every other row instead of back to back rows. I don't know why the seating assignments would be organized so that patrons would be sitting closer together when case numbers in the area are rising. Keep in mind that they were also not doing temperature checks and concessions were open, so there was a good chance people there would be sitting with less than two meters between them without masks indoors for a couple hours. read more

I don't know about others, but they have this amazing four flights of stairs that you can walk up and down. It was quite a leisurely experience. I suppose if you are unable to do stairs, it might become more a nightmare. I can't recall seeing an elevator. There's a huge drink machine that offers dozens of options. This theatre is ok. The Pros: It's right in the downtown core and they do a bunch of advanced screenings here. They validate your parking so it only comes to $5 on weeknights and there are a bunch of screens playing different movies. The employees are friendly and the lines move relatively quickly. The Cons: The theatre is quite far if you are coming from the north and traffic getting to the theatre is quite heavy. The escalators are broken a lot of the time leaving guests to wait for the elevator of climb the incredibly high staircase. The seats aren't always the cleanest and there is no VIP theatre. On the weekend they do not validate parking and it costs $20 or $25. All of my friends and I were shocked when we visited here on a weekend and we each drove. Lol All over I will continue to come here but when I'm not seeing an advanced screening or a movie for TIFF I will venture to the cinemas closer to my house. read more

Since this theatre is closing soon, I might as well make a review on it now. Because I live outside of downtown Toronto, this is not a theatre I frequently go to, but I did go there to see "Spider-Man: Far From Home" in IMAX, and it was worth it because not only is it bigger than newer ones, but this one also has laser projection as well, which makes it even greater. The theatre itself has seen better days as the original box office was turned to the (now closed) IMAX VR complex. The escalators were operating when I came here, and the overall lobby, concessions and theatre halls have been given the "grey" treatment by painting anything space related grey. Given that this place is slated to be demolished soon, I can see why. And because of this, I don't think I'll be coming back here as I just go to the Cineplex Odeon in Aurora instead. I highly recommend you go see a movie here at least once while it lasts, because once you do, it's gone. read more

I've been to Scotiabank Theatre twice now, each time as part of a corporate event. We booked an entire theater for a large team event and everyone was given popcorn and drinks with entrance. The staff did a great job of streamlining the food and entrance lines. We were not subjected to watching movie trailers either. I highly recommend coming to Scotiabank Theatre for inclusive corporate events. In terms of food, I thought the popcorn was too salty. The drink machines have sugar-free options. I was excited to see that there were flavored versions of sugar-free Coke. However, I was disappointed that the lime flavored version had no noticeable lime flavor. I like that there are many cinemas, especially during Tiff. I do NOT like that the escalator often doesn't work and there are so many stairs to climb. I also do not like that there are so few washroom stalls for the capacity of the place with all the cinemas. The lines at the women's washroom often extends well outside in the hall and the risk of missing some of the movie is very real. I do like that there is more than one concession stand. I've never really rated my experience anywhere so low before so this is a first but I really didn't enjoy my movie experience at this cineplex branch. I am a frequent movie goer, and this place has by far been my least favourite. Its a shame because I also expect more since in downtown Toronto, and I paid for AVX. Came here on Friday last week to watch Black Panther's late night movie time. There's a bar at the top when you get off the escalator if you care for a drink. Just hope that the escalator is moving in the direction you're going because theres only one in service, and if not you're taking the multiple steps up or down (which let me tell you, are a lot). I will tell you my only pro of this place -I enjoyed was that it was a big screen theatre that wasn't crowded. Everything else not so much, my boyfriend saw a mouse while we were walking up the stairs to get to our seats. I'd say the theatre was pretty dirty in this location (in comparison to all the other places I've been) AND I'm not surprised there was a mouse in there. Also because of the location we had a drunk girl sitting behind us that took away from the movie experience. (expected but definitely unwanted and kind of annoying especially when you're sober and just want to watch a movie) A bit of banter with her and other people in the theatre who were definitely more upset than i - am I listening to a live drama or trying to watch a movie? not sure. Unfortunately there's not much to say about it. Location: very convenient Hospitality: good State of the premises: dated Cleanliness: overall is mediocre because the lobby and corridors are ok, but the theatres are often dirty, the washrooms.... indecent (and mostly because people are pigs). However, knowing that my last statement speaks the truth, the theatre should schedule more frequent check ups/cleaning. Icing on the cake: the escalators are 95% of the times broken: if not both, at least one. On top of that, but this is a plaque that afflicts almost all movie theatres, there is no control of how people behave. The warning ads (I.e. Susie Seatkixker or Tommy Texter) are clearly not working. It's time that movie theatres across Canada will enforce a security in each room to make sure no one disturb either by talking or using the phone while the film is running. One warning, the second you out losing your ticket. Should be part of the terms and conditions. I can guarantee you that people will fall the first, the second and maybe the third time. I left my wallet in one of the seat cup-holders on my way out, last person out of the theatre ($500 + All my ID's & barking cards). Came back later to look for it and the seats had been cleaned. When asking management for assistance they told me to check my seat (which had been cleaned and wallet was missing). I asked to speak with the cleaners and described them, they refused to have their staff come up and insisted they found nothing, regardless of the situation. After leaving my information & filing a police report, no management followed up with me and a day later I got an alert that someone attempted to use my card a block from the theatre. Extremely unprofessional and obstructive practices when following up on what appears to be stolen property and critical information. read more

One of those situations where I'd go another half star, but not a full one. It's a good theatre, even having an IMAX screen. Of course, it is a thousand feet above sea level which requires ascending an escalator which would get you into a space shuttle. The biggest benefit is you can get a beer before your movie (but not during!). Otherwise, its sole advantage is its downtown location. read more

Note that if you come for an advanced movie screening, you can head up to the 2nd floor directly and there's a separate table for you to check in there. Note that unless you're part of media or a movie reviewer, you should always always go early!! Seats will run out so you definitely need to make sure you'll get a seat for the movie you'd like to watch! The other thing is, they reserve a good 40% of the seats for members from media and movie reviewers. Namely, all the centre column, middle portion seats are reserved. So, again, if you're going separately, you'll want to go early to nab a good seat. We got there 15 minutes before showtime and ended up having to sit at edge seats at the 2nd row - which makes for a very very distorted and awful movie viewing experience. The washrooms aren't great or large here and by the time we came in at 7pm, a lot of various food/snack/drinks stations seemed to be closing or near closing, which seemed super early. When we came in just before 7pm, there was also only 1 counter open for purchasing tickets on the lower floor. It just seemed almost comical how during peak movie viewing hours with a long lineup, there was 1 person selling tickets. Beautiful theater. Went there several times and always love coming back. But let's talk about the parking. At this location they give you a parking discount. That's awesome! But for only certain times of the day? I went to go see a movie today. My movie started at 4:30, I parked my car at 3:37 because I wanted to make sure i had available time to meet up with a date, get some food and drink, and find a good seat. BUT, because I parked before 4:00pm i did not recieved a discount on parking. Why the fuck do you have weird fucking parking rules? If I'm going to see a movie! Spending money at your theater, Why the hell does it matter when I come? Are you even thinking about what's best for the customer? Or are you fucking brain dead? I was told by Cineplex workers that you'll recieve a parking voucher if you park after 4:00 pm. I lied and said that I parked after 4. I went to pay my parking after the movie. it was $16 when I put in the parking printout I obtained when I first arrived. I then added the parking voucher. the computer said "discount -$8.00 = total $24.00? What the hell ....? So I canceled the parking payment. And just payed the $16.00 total. So weird. First things first - if you like Star Trek, then you probably want to see the Enterprise E and the Klingon Bird of Prey hanging from the ceiling. But that only lasts for a few moments. Then it's time to move on. Time to grab tickets. If you find that the movie you want to see looks to be sold out, always make sure to check the self-serve machines. Tickets register as sold out to the hu-mon sales people, earlier than they do to their machine overlords. Up the giant escalators. There's a bar here. Fancy a drink before the show? Knock yourself out. I don't know how good an idea that is, if you want to make it through the two hour feature, which is to come, but it's an interesting place to grab a pint to say you did. Next, buy a soda. Why? Because they have the Coca-Cola freestyle machines. If you have thirty minutes to kill before your show starts, a simple cup will grant you far more entertainment than you might expect. With over one hundred flavours to mix, you can try Grape Sprite, Raspberry Sprite, Vanilla Coke, Lime Fanta... or any combinations there of. I'm not going to lie to you though. You'll probably walk away with a classic, rather than a nonsensical mix. I recommend Mr. Pib. It's like Dr. Pepper's half brother, who never made it through the 8 year soda-PhD program. Got threatened by a guy that he would beat the crap out of me and my friend if we spoke during a movie (my friend whispered one thing to me in the first few seconds and that was it), reported to the managers only for them to do nothing and their solution is to tell us to switch seats. They said they would speak to the person (bare minimum after threatening us) and after the movie we spoke to them and they did nothing. Just know if you have run into an altercation there, management will sit on their hands and do nothing, and maybe give you a free movie voucher after to try and get you to shut up. read more

We saw "The Fighter" there tonight ... excellent movie! Depending on what theatre you are in will determine your experience. I've been in huge LOUD ones (right on!) and I've been in small ones. I found the sound on the movie today sometimes hard to understand. The price of food is outrageous (I never get food there). Almost $11 plus tax for a Burger King burger/fries/pop ... crazy! There aren't enough bathrooms on the theatre level ... I hate having to climb stairs to pee :( read more

A pretty decent theatre that is in the heart of downtown and near subway stations. 2 levels with a lounge/food area on the 2nd level that's more than just popcorn and nachos. You can actually come here earlier and grab a bite to eat while sitting in the lounge with a full bar so you can actually see what you are eating instead of eating it in the dark. Was here for a TIFF movie and this is a great location for it as the theatres themselves are large and can hold a huge audience. Not sure how busy it gets non TIFF but they seem to have a good setup up a quite a few counters to buy tickets and a few eating options upstairs so that you can get your food quickly and not be standing in line. The sits recline a little and are pretty comfortable so you don't have to bum shift (you know when you are sitting for a while and your bum starts to hurt so you start shifting from one cheek to another....this happens to everyone..right?!!) read more

This is my favourite movie theatre in the GTA. The entrance with the long escalators makes it a fun experience. Kids love it!

Why has the escalator here been broken for almost a decade ? Cineplex should be spending whatever they need to bring in the Don of escalator repairs because at this point it just looks lazy and pathetic that the escalator is still not functional. The main food and drink stations by the theatres are never open for purchase so you have to walk back out to the lobby for your overpriced snacks and wait in line with one person tending the till. I understand the movie business is losing money but every time i go to this theater, i get why people would rather pirate movies and watch them at home instead. I love going to the movies, and I love Cineplex...but I do have some qualms with this theatre. For starters, they need more bathrooms. A theatre that huge, and in the middle of downtown Toronto should have many more bathrooms - especially in the theatre area for when people are running out during the movie and don't want to be standing in line. The biggest group of bathrooms are all the way at the front of the theatre near the arcade. The bathrooms in the theatre area only have 2 stalls, so there is always a wait. I don't like how Cineplex got rid of the free re-fills on combos. We pay so much to go to the theatre as it is, and the food on top of it. How much does it really cost you to fill up someone's popcorn? I had a couple of friends who worked at Cineplex and there are garbage bags full of popcorn that are thrown out at the end of the day. Stop being so cheap. I generally take TTC to this theatre, but the last time I drove with my friends. We parked in the lot next door and found out that Cineplex doesn't validate parking on the weekend. Lame. All of that being said, the theatres themselves are very big, so you really get that big screen look/sound. The seats are comfortable and the place is clean. Staff are friendly as well. There are a lot of options for food and beverage (including alcohol - though you can't bring it in to the threatre). The pop machines are awesome, but be forewarned...the "Cherry Coke Zero" - and the other Coke Zero flavour mixes - isn't TRUE Cherry Coke Zero. It's just Cherry Coke mixed with Coke Zero. Like I said earlier, I love going to the movies, and I love Cineplex. Ya, I have a few qualms with them, but I am still going to come. The price just makes my visits fewer and far between but at the same time, I only pick movies that are really worth seeing on the big screen and it makes the experience more enjoyable. read more
