This is the quality film that Rogers hot doc wants to offer us? This is ridiculous!
    Miss Lady ..

This is just one theater showing room. The quality of seats are okay. I recommend the second viewing level. Go upstairs. Go across the street to Eva's chimneys for a cool dessert after. I'm very disappointed at the selection in films at times. They had Step Up with Julia Stiles showing once for God's sake. How embarrassing!

Docsoup! Documentary subscription via Hot Docs. Yes, the director of this film screening did a Q&A on stage as well :)

Quick tips: - First floor seating, middle to back rows, you'll get the best view. When you're upstairs, people ahead will block the bottom of the screen (blocking subtitles). THIS IS BAD!! I missed all the subtitles for Last Day In Vietnam. First floor seating, you're LOOKING UP to the screen. You won't block anyone, and no one will block you. - Q&A is a lot of fun!!! This is when the film features an evening where the filmmaker, director, god daughter (Keep On Keepin' On) etc....will be up on stage to share their experiences as well as to answer personal questions. Try to make it out!! They fly all the way to Toronto specifically to watch the film with us and talk to us about their work. Who wants to come to Toronto, seriously right? Even if questions or the audience are lousy (I can bitch about this all day), I always learn something new at these Q&A events. ==========WHY HERE?? My friend is really, really into TIFF that he takes a week off his actual job just to work at the TIFF Festival and watch films all day. Hot Docs Festival is similar, except it's all documentaries. Clearly we are not similar. Bloor Hot Docs Cinema shows a new list of documentaries every two weeks. If you missed one, you won't see it again until Bloor Cinema decides to include it again. So it cycles through old and new documentaries twice a month. I don't always find something interesting to watch.... but somehow I end up coming to this theatre at least twice a month. However I do have: ==========FILM SUBSCRIPTIONS There are a two types of packages (ticket bundles) you can get: - Doc Soup subscription, a part of Hot Docs Festival (I paid $211.79 with tax for 2014-2015 subscription) - Every first week of the month from Oct-April, they feature a documentary from last year's Hot Docs Festival, films that made Sundance's selection, films that made SXSW selection, etc.. Every screening for Doc Soup, somebody who worked on the film (director, producer, cameraman) will be up on stage for post-film Q&A. You'll also get 10 tickets for the next Hot Docs Festival. So this package will work out to be $12.46 per ticket (regularly they'd be $13.27+HST+$1 non-member fee). DOWNSIDE: it's available only months before October. AND if you've already watched a lot of docs, you'll probably have seen the films they show. You won't know the film they choose to show until three weeks before the date. - Bloor Cinema memberships, NOT Hot Docs Festival, but with the theatre itself - different pricing levels starting at $39. You'll get some free tickets, a discount on all future tickets (as well as discount for the Hot Docs Festival), some popcorn coupons, and you won't have to pay the $1 (per ticket) fee. I hate this fee. Technically you'll save at least $3 per ticket. That is, if you go often enough (like I do). With this, you do not get 10 advance tickets for the Hot Docs Festival (like above) but there is no deadline when buying Bloor Cinema membership. You can buy a membership any time. AND YES, you can buy single tickets to ANY film ANY time -you don't need a subscription to watch Doc Soup films. ==========THE CROWD I come alone for Doc Soup. It's sort of my "getaway from all life's stress" evening. I never ask questions during Q&A, but I get to sit and watch quietly. I have also fallen asleep during the Q&A (some are seriously boring) and during the movies (some are seriously boring). The people here range depending on the film, of course. With the Doc Soup subscription screening (first Wednesday and Thursday of the month), majority of people are gray hair, healthy folks. Probably retired, very friendly, and they have this "I love my life" look on their face. During regular screenings, people are couples, younger, sometimes louder. For the Madonna Truth or Dare documentary, there was a "party" that started an hour before the movie. There was a DJ, beer special, and people brought their drinks to their seats. We had the winner of a small voguing competition (and two people from the audience) come up on stage to dance (and vogue). The crowd here was a little tipsy but made the movie so much fun. (I also had two pints before coming here, woohoo!) Doc Soup days: 100% full Regular days: 10-50% full ==========THE THEATRE... The lobby is so small. The box office is also super small and right at the door. It's a little messy when there are LOTS of people. Washrooms are upstairs. We don't get the obnoxious crowd for documentaries, so the theatre stays clean and quiet. People don't push each other when getting in/out. Staff are always around to find you a seat when the theatre gets full. I think my favourite guy is the man facilitating the Q&A at the screening of Point And Shoot. He directed the conversation so well and he asked amazing questions. Thank you, favourite guy!

We had planned to watch Fantastic Four during the last show and booked two special-needs seats online. Parking downtown already costs more than the tickets for two, but we were looking forward to a relaxing evening. About twenty minutes into the film, a staff member approached us to explain that one of the "seats" we had booked was not actually a chair at all, but the space reserved for a wheelchair. This crucial detail was never made clear on the booking site. Unlike other accessible venues--such as the TTC or most theatres--that allow guests to choose between using their own wheelchair or a provided seat, this cinema offered no alternative except an awkward mid-show refund. The situation was uncomfortable and completely ruined our night out. Although the management responded publicly on Google in a caring and professional tone, two follow-up emails since then have gone unanswered. I hope Imagine Cinemas takes accessibility concerns seriously and improves both its booking transparency and customer follow-up.

My first official screening at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival happened at Scotiabank Theatre. One of five venues used to showcase films during the festival, this multiplex housed the majority of all screenings among its 14 auditoriums with an approximate seating capacity range from 100-500. Formerly the Paramount Theatre Toronto, this complex opened in 1999 but was sold by the parent company Viacom to a group later to be named Cineplex Entertainment in 2005. The result was a rebranding of the name to Scotiabank Theatre Toronto under a sponsorship arrangement with Scotiabank. Would I scoot my way to the bank after the many films watched here!? PURCHASE(S) Regular Screening - "Maddie's Secret" ($29.00CAD): The world premiere of this film, I knew someone who worked on it, and it was shot in/around my Silver Lake hipsterhood, so I had to lend my support! The online ticket sales were a breeze once you found a film that wasn't sold out. The "Rush Line" sales were quick once tickets were released, and every human being I dealt with from festival staffers/volunteers to the concessions was nearly seamless - thank you! PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): I was constantly in the area all day throughout the Toronto International Film Festival, so I simply walked. Otherwise, there were spots along the many main and surrounding streets, some nearby structures, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said! ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE Generally speaking, this was your standard multiplex theatre filled with cushy cup holding reclining seats, very good sound system, and auditorium seating so no one blocked your view. Out of the theatres, you had a large concession stand, a separate Melts and Starbucks stand, in addition to a decent-sized bar dining area. There was a very long escalator https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=96&select=ncEHDOlawpLoISteQD6E6w that looked daunting. Plenty of natural lighting came through the large surrounding windows while electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There weren't any TVs (except at the bar area) nor any background music, but there was plenty of chatter all around. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=96&select=Nr8c5z2Pj2Z0xJ0W6CE8Uw ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent at Scotiabank Theatre and would definitely visit them again! Everything ran smoothly enough, there weren't any real hassles, the concession prices were standard with a more broad list of things to eat while the ticket prices were elevated as was the norm for a film festival. The customer service was easy, friendly, and straightforward. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $51.50CAD BEFORE any discounts/tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... It occurred to me recently that maybe my punny nature and love for good food happened because of this man. I'm glad. Stephen Yan kept a low profile for roughly thirty years. He was lured out of British Columbia by RetroKid. They did a collaboration on Wok with Yan clothing and merchandise. They also held a meet-and-greet event a few Saturdays ago at The Royal Cinema. Here's what I don't recommend doing. The night before, I attended a Billy Idol concert. I did a lot of walking and dancing. I had to get up early to get to Little Italy by 10 am for this event I felt it all, but it was worth all of it. I parked in a small Green P parking lot off Clinton Street, which was steps away from this venue. I then had to line up to get into the theatre. Organizers did a great job finding our names on the list, getting wristbands based on the type of ticket and perk package that you had ordered, and getting the proper t-shirt size and branded chopsticks that you desired. It was great. Staff were helpful. I needed to use the washroom. Washrooms were upstairs. It's an older theatre, so it's a flight of stairs up. The washrooms were clean and surprisingly spacious. We could sit wherever, except the VIP area, unless you were one. I was content in my comfy chair. Pay Chen, a local foodie, welcomed us. She provided a summary of Yan's accomplishments and introduced Steve, co-founder of RetroKid. I love the merchandise that this company creates, from Sesame Street, to Stephen Yan. This event allowed us to buy Wok with Yan merchandise before it went public to the world after the event. Yan was introduced and got quite the standing ovation. It was great seeing him. He can still talk up a storm. He was his usual punny self. It was nice to hear what he has been up to. I was thrilled to be there. Afterwards, we could meet him and get a photo taken with him. He didn't do autographs. The lineup was long. I didn't mind the wait. My legs were jelly from the concert. I spoke to a staffer just before we hit the stage. There were steps, but no handrails. My legs were so tired that I asked if he could be my support as I went up the stairs. Yep, they were that heavy. He didn't mind. He was thrilled that I saw Billy Idol and had a great time. I met Stephen Yan -- the legend. A staffer took my phone and I got to spend a brief moment with him. He greeted me in Cantonese, asking how I was. I responded in Cantonese in the same language. The moment was magical. He was everything you hoped that he'd be. He was warm and welcoming. He was funny. He was kind and compassionate. The woman took photos of us in a hug and in conversation, and in a few poses. I shared my story of my mom and I watching his shows, and my mom jotting down all his recipes. He seemed genuinely touched and asked how my mom was. Very Chinese. Incredibly cool. I did buy some merchandise. I got a t-shirt and some buttons with his punny sayings on aprons. It was highly organized. You basically checked what you wanted on an order from. I didn't have a pen, so I asked to use a nice woman's pen who was sitting in front of me. She asked me if I was Yan's daughter. It was such a weird question at first. It was quite flattering in hindsight. You basically wrote your name on the order form and paid. I used a credit card. I then waited patiently for my name to be called. I got my order and was happy. The place had overstock on Wok with Yan chopsticks. I ended up getting another pair. Yay! I have a set. I like that you can get hot food, cold beer, and snacks at the concession stands. I saw someone with a hot dog and popcorn while I was waiting to meet Yan. The selection of wine, pasta, sardines, St. Viateur bagels, and more was impressive. You can actually dine on the patio here. It's a charming theatre. It now has a special place in my heart. I met Stephen Yan here. (350)

The whole day I was looking forward to going to the movie, but more specifically, to get their classic poutine to eat while watching the movie. I got to the theatre and the ticket scanning was pretty quick and smooth (I ordered my ticket online), and considering there was a line of about 4 people in front of me. I headed toward the washroom and it was pretty clean, there was also a cleaning staff member at here at the time. I headed to the concession counter and there were long lines here. I couldn't see the poutine list on the menu screen on the overhead but it's a VIP theatre so they must have poutine available. After a few minutes of waiting in line, it was my turn to order. I asked if I could order a poutine. The lady at the counter said I have to go around to the vip bar/food section to the left of us. That was kind of annoying, after waiting in this line. So I went to the correct area and ordered. They said it would take about 10 minutes for my order to be ready. It was ready in about 8. That was good. The poutine came in a large flat white takeout box. Typically at the other cineplex's I've been to, the poutine came in a smaller more compact brown takeout box. The one I received today felt very obnoxious when I opened it in the theatre and was eating it while the movie was playing. The lid was just so big and it stuck out. As for how the poutine was, the fires were good with a fair amount of cheese curds. However, the gravy was really thick and there was way too much of it. Because it was a big flat box they only put in a layer of fries so to me it seemed they over did it on the gravy because there was so much space in the box. Mind you, the box wasn't full (it would probably amount to the aforementioned small brown box at other locations). Ultimately, the gravy ruined it because I was getting globs of thick gravy. And it was different to scrap of or avoid it because I was in the dark. To conclude, if you're looking forward to a poutine to eat while at the movies, go to the scotiabank location.
