When we were looking for a company to help with such a large-scale renovation they took us seriously as a client, answered all of our questions and made us feel so taken care of every single step of the way. Revolution Landscape is an amazing full-service landscape design and build organization. Ari and Jeff listened to our goals and vision and incorporated those ideas into a detailed design that resulted in a backyard that is better then we could have imagined. The result is a space that functions less like a "yard" and more like an additional living space where we can entertain friends and family or enjoy a cup off coffee as the sunrises. The design draws connections between the interior and exterior of our home, accentuates our views, makes amazing use of the small space, and features a custom built-in BBQ and two garden beds that are already producing vegetables. As the project progressed, we quickly realized Jeff and Ari's skill and relied on their judgment for what would look best. The project team was respectful, dependable, and conscientious. During construction, Jeff reached out to our neighbors and offered them the opportunity to raise any issues or concerns. Revolution Landscape installed water wise plants on a steep hillside behind my house. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality company, with good knowledge of water wise plants, and listens to clients wishes while giving good advice. Don't take the four stars the wrong way. I've never given anything five stars. For Ari to get five he would have had to come down on price a little. What he estimated for install time and what I witnessed did not match. His guys worked quick so perhaps the labor quote was a tad high. My wife and I won preliminary landscape design services through a charity auction. Ari of Revolution Landscape gave us a basic plan for the hillside and discussed some possible follow on work. He listened well to what we wanted and gave good advice when it came to the reality of maintaining a steep hillside. Because the hillside is intentionally very natural looking the plan was not more than to allow for rough plant quantities, so I can't comment on detailed planning. When plants were delivered by the nursery I was happy to hear that Ari did not plant what didn't look good. He sent them back and worked hard to find suitable replacements. We ended up downsizing some trees and adding some smaller plants. Ari's team worked quickly and all the plants appear to have been planted well. They are holding up after three days of heavy rain. The mulch and compost they used is top quality. I would consider Revolution Landscape for follow on work and would recommend them. read more

Revolution Landscape designed & installed an" over the top"organic urban farm and native low water backyard landscape for the non-profit TERI, Inc. at one of our 12 group homes. The front yard was transformed from a water guzzling never used lawn to a gorgeous neighborhood friendly mini farm and orchard. The produce feeds not only the group home which has the garden, but 4 other homes as well! The aesthetics are jaw droppingly gorgeous. The backyard's native landscape & edible garden boxes were featured in San Diego Native Plant Garden Home tour last year. Last year at this time our front yard was a mess. Ficus tree roots had taken over and rabbits continued to eat our patchy lawn. There had been an article in the Union Tribune about Revolution Landscape so I called for help. It was a long process helped so much by Ari, the owner's, kindness and perseverance. We wanted to make sure our neighbors were ok with the plans, as well as needing the plans to be approved through our Homeowners Association. Ari did the legwork and cheerfully revised plans several times. The tree roots turned out to need extra labor in order to remove them but cost savings were found elsewhere and the project (don't tell HGTV) came in under budget! I was just looking at the front yard today-- now a home for butterflies-- looking at the roses, the yellow daisies, the bay laurel tree, the fragrant hedges of rosemary which I constantly harvest for my kitchen and for gifts, and I feel nothing but gratitude for Revolution. Our water bill has dropped significantly with drip irrigation. They continue to maintain our yard every other week and are about to put in a small herb garden. I was tired of looking at my water guzzling grass and finally admitted that I was never going to do it myself. I contacted Revolution Landscape and after meeting with Ari I decided to go with them to do the job. Each and very person that worked with me in the process was wonderful. I enjoyed having them around and decided to have them continue to maintain my yard to keep it looking fantastic. My back yard and front yard were both done, so it was an expensive proposition. Revolution Landscape was extremely easy to work with. They were professional throughout the entire process and all the workers were very accommodating and helpful. Not only did they produce a beautiful landscape for our front corner lot, they were so efficient and quick, working every weekday when it was not raining! We love our native plants and fruit trees and the design is elegant, natural and water-wise. All our neighbors have complimented on how nice the landscaping looks. We really appreciated how they incorporated elements from our demolition into the design details including the concrete chunks from our old driveway that were incorporated as stepping stones from the curb to the sidewalk. There were a few details that were changed from both sides of the table and we didn't have to worry about being nickeled and dimed. Where many contractors charge the customer for any changes, Revolution Landscape held true to the budget and delivered an exceptional product. We had Ari come out to help revitalize some fruit trees at our house and also to help us with our small veggie garden. We ended up hiring Revolution to prune and mulch all our fruit trees. They also brought in compost for the garden. Everything is growing great now and we will definitely be calling them again to prune our trees next year. read more

In July 2014, I contacted Revolution Landscape about giving us a bid to clean up our front and back yard, weeding and pruning bushes and trees to begin with. My husband had tweaked his back and couldn't do the yard work for several months, so it was messy. We also needed to redo our sprinkler system, sought help to control mealybugs on our new bamboo canes as well as a blight on our passionfruit vines. Everything is grown organically in our yard, and we looked forward to a reliable organic landscape company to help us clean up, put in a winter garden in the late fall and do bimonthly maintenance. I emailed the owner, Ari, and he emailed me back right away to say I would be hearing from Matt. When Matt came out for the consultation, he was unenthusiastic and acted like he was doing me a big favor. After looking over both yards with him, I asked him for a bid (it was a Friday), and he told me that he would get back with the price the following Monday. He also said that they charged $75 for two guys for a one hour maintenance twice a month, which seemed a little high for someone to weed, but I didn't say anything. Then he turned around and said, by the way, we charge $75 for this consultation. I stated to him there was no mention of a consultation fee in either of their emails or on the website, so he went away in a huff. We never dealt with a landscape company that charged for a first consultation. I NEVER heard back from Matt or the company, & it's been over a month. In the meantime, my husband hired a laborer from one of the landscaping subs he's dealt with (not organic), who did all the labor in the front & back yards in 8 hours for $120.00. He cleaned up the yard & patio, weeded, shaped & pruned, laid down 10 bags of wood chips & left the property spotless. My husband has been a Senior Construction Superintendent in the San Diego area for over 25 yrs., building commercial as well as large custom homes, and he will not be recommending this company to any of his contacts. read more

We recently completed a landscape redesign around our home using Revolution Landscape, and we could not be more pleased with the results. The entire process, from initial concept through completion, was very enjoyable and the owners and staff are just stellar. The front yard design is clean and contemporary as we requested. Although the back yard was more complicated, Revolution came through with flying colors. Our back yard wishlist involved removing a very old concrete patio that was draining towards the house, making a dog run re-using stepping stones/pebble already on site, and incorporating 5 existing fruit trees and an ill-placed cabana structure into a water-wise, sustainable but aesthetically pleasing yard/garden for us to enjoy. Julie's design was extraordinary, with a natural-appearing, meandering rock "riverbed" focal point that receives water from the roof and other drains so that water returns to the water table. (The landscape went through the severe storms of last week with flying colors. There was no silting or loss of soil in front or back.) The final design includes a small rose garden and some raised veggie beds. The yard is already beautiful and it has yet to grow in. As with any construction project, there can be changes of mind or unknown complications that suddenly appear. Jeff and all staff people were very receptive and responsive to changes. All changes that required an upcharge or resulted in savings were clearly discussed. Change orders were reasonably priced. Plants that were not used, either due to lack of space or poor quality, were not put in. They clearly are concerned with the client's wishes and will do a careful, very aesthetic and environmentally sensitive job. We are having Revolution perform maintenance on the project for a few months until the garden settles. Jeff and Ari are clearly knowledgeable about plant care and soils, and we intend to glean all the information we can from them and the maintenance staff. We would not hesitate to use this company again for a landscape project. read more

I hired Revolution Landscape last spring to replace the soil in my patio beds & put in new plants, Almost all of the plants died. I asked to have the soil tested by the owner who testified there was nothing wrong with the soil. So, in Dec. I hired another gardener & landscaping company which replaced the topsoil, fertilized & put in new plants. The soil is holding the water & the plants are thriving. read more

We have just completed our third project with Revolution Landscape and I have to tell you all the reasons we are completely thrilled! First, I just found an old water bill and compared it to my current one: we are using 70% (!) less water now. Second is even better: I really disliked our old yard-steep slope covered with ugly iceplant, and turf that took way more maintenance and water than it was worth. With our latest removal of all front yard grass and sculpture of a beautiful landscape of lavendars, sages, many natives and other beautiful flowers, fruit trees, artichokes and succulents, we spend so much more time relaxing, exploring, and enjoying our small suburban outdoor space. Third, we actually have a productive landscape now with fruit trees (11), 3 raised garden beds, grapevines, blueberries and more. Revolution maintains our yard so we just get to play around with a little planting and harvesting. I grew up on a farm, canning, jelly-making, etc and swore, when I moved to San Diego almost 40 years ago that I didn't want to have anything to do with yardwork or trying to grow things. I am now a born-again enthusiast for the joys of harvesting and enjoying the many wonderful things we can have from our own yard. The people at Revolution Landscape have just been a joy to work with from the beginning. It has been a journey having them help me figure out just what would thrive in our bad soil and dry climate with ornery pests, but it has been a real learning experience and I wouldn't do anything differently (other than completing the 3 phases sooner...can't believe I chose to do in phases rather than just all at once). I feel great about our aggressive water conservation, and that we do everything organically, and that we spend so much more time out enjoying the yard. From initial design to working through modifications and budgeting, to talking with the guys on site almost every day, to our ongoing relationship and being able to call them with questions or concerns, to having the owners stop by occasionally to check on things and take a photo of something particularly spectacular, to sharing our produce with friends and family, Revolution Landscape, Jeff and Ari, have been our inspiration and our teachers. We originally hired Revolution Landscape to renovate our front entry/patio which consisted of slabs of old, cracked concrete surrounded by a termite-damaged wood fence. We wanted to remove the concrete, re-purpose it, and create a private space in which we could house our many pots of succulents and other plants. And we also wanted to do all of this in a sustainable, water, and cost-conscious manner. We had first come across Revolution Landscape at a seminar on fruit tree pruning given by Ari, one of the owners. We were impressed by his knowledge and know-how, and his company's outlook on sustainability and landscaping matched ours. We also like to encourage our local enterprises, and these guys are home-grown San Diegans with a vast knowledge of our soils, microclimates, etc. Julie, the designer we worked with, was fantastic. She was able to intuit our likes and dislikes and created a design that incorporated all of the things that were important to us: functionality, beauty, and water conservation. She also worked with us to keep things on or under our budget. She designed a fence with shelves for all of our pots and a beautiful CorTen steel sliding door. She also arranged to get a design we liked cut out of the steel. She designed a circular planter made of the repurposed concreted for our new persimmon tree. Mark, who did the actual work, was terrific, and the repurposed concrete planter, which he built, is beautiful, with lots of nooks and crannies for small succulents. We were so happy with the work, that we hired Revolution again to build a rain harvesting system and tank, as well as two raised beds for vegetables (including one which they installed with all of the necessary amendments for growing blueberries-which are thriving). Again, the work, done by Colin, was impeccable and everything we had been looking for. In fact, we will be hiring Revolution again to replace our deck, remove more concrete from our backyard, and plant more fruit trees. They have become our go to source for gardening questions. In fact, Jeff spent a lot of time teaching us how to prune our fig tree properly, something we had not wanted to attempt on our own. Everything-from design to installation-was done in a professional and timely manner, and we always got quick responses to questions and concerns. This company's philosophy seemed perfectly in line with what I was looking for. I spoke with Ari quite a bit and was very clear I was looking for someone to amend my terraced hillside and maintain the edible garden on a regular basis. I gave him my address and sent a picture of the terraces and he assured me that he had crews working in my area and they could work with terraces. I agreed to have him out for a "consultation" with the intent of putting that cost toward maintenance as he assured me I could do. After showing him the property in person and talking about what I was looking to have maintained (vegetables, fruits) he said he would get back to me with a quote for both the initial install of compost and a bid for routine regular care. It took about a week before he came back with $450 for 3 yards of compost plus $100 delivery charge plus $150 for labor to apply it to the beds. Now as if the shock of $450 for 3 yards NOT including delivery OR install wasn't enough he also informed me at that time that he in fact did not have a crew that would be able to regularly maintain the garden. The team at Revolution are consummate professionals! I interviewed a number of firms before we selected Revolution for a front and backyard remodel. I was initially impressed by the landscape architect, Steven, who was polished, listened to our wishes/ concerns and then designed a beautiful rendition to help us visualize what the project might look like once complete. We ultimately chose Revolution after conducting professional references. I could not believe how helpful their prior clients were and so willing to share their own experience, even inviting me to tour their garden - which I did and it was inspiring! That experience encapsulates who Revolution is and why they do this, it's about connecting...to people...and to nature. Jeff was also amazing. He was responsible for the installation of the job but that doesn't do justice to his contributions. He is such a visionary, has a breadth of knowledge and takes so much care in every little detail and I mean every little detail, down to personally picking out boulders with his artistic eye and masterful placement.
