Dan, the owner, is incredibly talented, patient, and kind. He spent hours helping us refine our ideas and improve the design, essentially eliminating the need for a separate landscape designer. He never made us feel rushed or pressured. After meeting with several high-pressure landscaping companies, working with Dan was a breath of fresh air. Once the project started, we met Hector, the foreman, along with Tito and Marcos. They are hardworking, genuine people who clearly enjoy what they do. Over the two-week project they removed heavy roots, took down a large tree, prepared the ground, installed plants, created a beautiful rock garden, added a sprinkler system and lighting, and repaired and painted the fences. Our backyard was transformed from a messy "jungle" into a neat, beautiful oasis. One thing that really stood out: after the job was technically finished, Dan and his crew came back early the next morning to reposition two 300-plus-pound rocks so everything was exactly how we wanted it. This review for DB landscaping is long overdue. They remodeled our backyard - which included soft landscaping, flagstone, concrete, a fountain, a pool equipment enclosure, and lighting. We already had a design and they made that design a reality. Daniel and his team go above and beyond for their clients. And, that isn't always easy when you're dealing with a client like us. We would change things up at the last second and his team never made us feel bad about that. They did everything they could to make us happy and satisfied. And they stand behind their work. We interviewed 8 contractors (maybe more?!?) and stopped looking after we met Daniel. In addition to being a genuinely nice guy, we were impressed with his integrity and beautiful portfolio. We wanted to include a space on our property for our trailer to look more like a hangout spot than an eyesore. We had rough ideas and sketches but not professional drawings. Daniel and his team listened, came up with a few great ideas and we ended up implementing their design changes. This is the benefit of working with someone who 1) has tons of experience 2) is genuinely passionate about design and landscape 3) has a small tight crew that works very well together as a team. Since having our yard in Carlsbad completely re-landscaped by DBlandscape to be drought tolerant with a few areas of decomposed granite about five years ago, we are having a moderate amount of difficulty. The yard is great at growing weeds all over the place, even popping up through the DG areas. We have also had a number of irrigation leaks. We understand drip irrigation can be easily damaged when working on the yard. One big issue for us was when we approached them to setup regular maintenance, DBlandscape really did not want to do this work, even though their website claims they do landscape maintenance. This type of yard does require ongoing maintenance. We have had various different people work on the yard, however none seem willing keep up with removing weeds. You either have to do this by hand by the root, or dig up the area with a hoe with is risky due to all the buried drip line and loosens up DG areas. To be fair, Dan was responsive when we determined the original irrigation installed by his crew was without back flow prevention to the valves which sit below the backyard. He did get it fixed at no cost to us. In general, the yard looked really lovely when it was originally completed. Now, over 50% of our drought tolerant plants have died or are dying. Dan told us, we have keep a very close eye on how to water (duration for different zones). That really did not help us know how to set things. It seems the zones are setup with mixed needs. So we are either overwatering something or under watering other things. With the health of many plants suffering. It should not be a science experiment to determine how to setup the watering. We are searching for landscape help yet again from somebody who can help us manage our relatively small yard. NOTE: under the name, it says San Francisco. We live in Carlsbad. read more

DB Landscaping was originally referred to us by a friend that was very satisfied. Our landscape designer also spoke very glowingly of their work. I did check some other landscapers but felt the most comfortable with Daniel and his pricing was very competitive. Our project involved complete demolition of the prior landscaping and installation of boulders, irrigation, lighting and various types of plants based on space and light conditions. This review is long overdue, as it is for work that Dan/DB Landscape Co. completed for us last spring. We had a pretty sizeable project, as we had our entire backyard redone. This included removing the existing grass, some trees, and lots of roots. We then had that replaced with turf, some concrete pavers, and drought tolerant landscaping. In short, everything came out beautifully and we're very happy with the work. It was a pleasure working with Dan every step of the way. He runs a pretty small operation---and I mean that in a good way. Every interaction felt very personal and Dan always had time to answer questions, go over design ideas, etc. His team also did a great job and were very professional throughout the project, which lasted about two weeks. I would add that we also made some last minute changes and Dan was always very accommodating. We were looking to add low water drip systems to two rental properties as well as our personal residence. Yelp help me find these guys, and I have to say they have earned their stellar reputation. I wanted to replace all my sprinkler valves because the ones I had kept breaking, and my yard was so dry in some places that walking on the grass sounded like walking on potato chips. I was very happy with the work and professionalism. Not just of Dan, but his whole crew. Friendly and knowledgeable guys who got the work done and done well. They were always on time and quick with their work. Pricing was upfront and within reason for what I was doing. I knew I was paying for quality, so I wasn't expecting bottom dollar. But the estimate was within 10% of the others. As is always the case with work done to things invisible (buried in the ground), there were some unforeseen repairs that came to light once the dirt was removed. Dan was upfront about it and didn't take advantage of the situation. Only bit of caution I can offer, is to get on their schedule early. They're popular for good reason, but it does mean they can get backed up. Just the downside of working with professional people I suppose. read more

I was fed up with my outrageous water bills and wanted an entire irrigation system overhaul (I had some areas that were literally swampy with water and others that were burned-out). Dan and Alex did an amazing job of auditing my entire system (600+ heads over almost an acre in Carmel Valley) and coming up with some key recommendations. I ended up having them implement everything. If you have an older irrigation system, you absolutely must have Dan and his team audit your system. He found several leaks, massive overpressure, and lack of check valves in my system. All things that waste tons of water. In the process of this project, I got to know Dan very well. Awesome workmanship and communication. I am a licensed general contractor and am very glad to have hired Dan and his crew to do a complete removal and new installation of growies and irrigation. Our house was built in 1974, and needed a new appearance, we hired a landscape architect to provide plans. Dan was not the least expensive price. But the low bidder did not have insurance. I am not sure who would hire an unlicensed contractor, but take this warning, if they don't have insurance and something goes wrong, you will pay dearly. Dan and his crew are great communicators, and extremely dog friendly. We authorized some extra work and again they were very fair on the pricing.
