Got my caffeine fix here before heading home from the Athens area. Good stuff!…read more First off, just so no one gets confused, this coffee is sold inside the UG White Mercantile building! The signage is pretty good outside, but it never hurts to share information. Parking wasn't too much of a challenge on a Tuesday downtown, and the cool interior of the building felt great after the short walk over. The mercantile store offers a lot of cool things to browse while your coffee is made. There's also an (unaffiliated, I think) chocolate/confection selection that's quite beautiful and impressive. Second off, let me just say I'm kind of obsessed with the branding here. It's got a plane motif and the catchphrase "your morning wingman" for coffee is just too cute. I saw this company is veteran owned; I wonder if Air Force? Not sure, but the concept is adorable regardless. Their barista seemed to be ringing a mercantile customer up when I arrived. He was very apologetic about not being right with me. It was not a huge deal at all (I waited less than 2 minutes), but I appreciated his eagerness to help me. Great service! I ordered a medium iced salted caramel + dark chocolate latte, one of their recommended flavor combos. It came in a cute cup and the ice : coffee ratio was perfect. I didn't get much dark chocolate flavor but the caramel was there for sure. It was a very creamy, thick latte with a balanced flavor. Personally, I like my lattes a tiny bit sweeter, but I'm definitely a sugar freak when it comes to coffee, so YMMV! Overall, it was yummy and I'm glad I stopped in. Give this place a go next time you need a caffeine boost!

I walked in a little past 1pm, having studied the chalkboard outside with a delightful-sounding selection of spring specials. As I'm ordering, the barista and I alike see another group walk in. And another. And another-- I'm not seeing anyone else in the rather small physical establishment, and as a former barista am beginning to sweat a bit for this Greenroom employee and all of the orders he is about to have to deal with, seemingly by himself (cue the cheerful chime announcing more customers, and more customers). As I wait for my order, grateful to be the first in this long line, I sit to casually read a book and take my opportunity to observe my fellow patrons of this fine little spot. I hear the barista asking customers if they're okay with waiting, and he begins to ask customers if they're okay with waiting a minute for their orders. I'm content, as I have no urgent arrangements, and the now plastic-gloved barista comes up to me, informing me that they have no lime to garnish the avocado toast I've ordered and asking if that was okay. I assert as much and he returns to the line; I think to myself that he could have saved the time and not told me and I wouldn't have known the difference, but I'm pleased with his attention to detail. I get my to-go box of avocado toast with an egg and am pleased to open it and try a bite. I feel that it could have done with red pepper flakes (my favorite), but the everything bagel seasoning added a nice texture and the overall flavor profile was delightfully savory. As for my drink, which came later, it was the Good Riddance: a vanilla cold brew with lime pie cold foam (which lived up to the name tremendously). It also had what I believe to be graham cracker or pie crust crumbles on the top that were delightful! The drink was delicious and perfect for the spring weather. I sit upstairs as I always do, but specifically on the patio where I can see all of MidCity and the surrounding businesses. There's nonintrusive and enjoyable music presumably coming from the Camp itself? After an hour or so of enjoying my spoils, I return to the counter below to see if the barista is still there now that the rush is over. He is now accompanied by another coworker, blessedly, and I learn that his name is Caleb. We chat for a few moments and I introduce myself before leaving, but not before taking another picture of all the event calendars for the week and month. Now I'm positively fueled for my afternoon and grateful for the relaxed atmosphere. (Thanks for reading this far if you did, and shoutout again to Caleb for doing his job tremendously! He informed me that he enjoys a good rush of customers, and I replied that I would have cried to have been in the situation that he handled with great poise and dedication. The great service alongside the excellent product left me wanting to return quickly!)

This restaurant is across the street from the fairly popular Francesco's Italian restaurant. Having been there before, I didn't have any troubles locating this place. The parking lot is a little rugged in spots but at least there's plenty of space. The inside is a little sparse but there's ample seating and some kind of cool drawings hanging on the walls. A portrait of who I can only assume to be Minnie Lee is near the entrance. Food is served cafeteria style by some very nice people. Seriously, the service was so warm and sweet. We felt very welcomed there. We both decided on fried chicken for lunch. My mom got the last breast from the batch so I wound up with a thigh, which isn't my favorite piece but I still like it okay. You can have more than two sides if you wish, but we didn't. I chose yams and fried potatoes as mine, while my mom got yams and cabbage. Note that their cabbage is cooked with sausage. For bread, they offered standard cornbread muffins or hot water cornbread, which the friendly staff recommended (good choice!). We both opted for sweet tea to drink. I'm not sure of the price because of course my mom snuck in and paid for both of our meals before I could notice! Lol. We found a clean booth and dug in quickly. Overall, the food was pretty good! This isn't necessarily a new favorite soul food place for me, but I'd definitely come back. The best item was honestly the cabbage! My mom let me taste a bite. So flavorful and perfect texture. This is real, southern-style cabbage (which is to say, probably not great for you...but quite tasty!). The hot water cornbread was also really good. It's different than the hot water cornbread I've had in the past; this version was very crispy on the outside with super soft, almost gooey, corny inside. It was yummy. The yams were also solid! Not the best I've ever had (flavor kind of one-note), but they were sweet and soft. The fried potatoes and fried chicken were both just okay. The fried potatoes weren't super hot or crispy, but the added flavor from the onions was nice. The fried chicken's breading was crispy and flavorful enough, but the meat, even on the thigh, was a bit dry. Neither were bad, but if I return in the future, I'd probably try something else first. We were too full for dessert, but they had pecan pie and banana pudding on display. Overall, lovely service and tasty food make this a solid option in the area.

Buzzed by here to get a drink before heading out of Athens. I really liked this place!…read more I think the location might've previously been a bit more on the square, but I could be wrong...as it is, it's still easy walking distance from the square but tucked away a little bit. There's a private parking lot it shares with a few other businesses, though I had already parked on the street before coming by. Signage is a little discreet but they have some flags advertising acai bowls. The inside is beautiful and nicely decorated -- modern, clean, has a bigger city vibe to it honestly. Walk around the corner to find the bar where you can order your drink. Service was exceptional. I was greeted warmly by a younger man with dark hair. I took a while looking at the menu (indecisive) and he politely told me that they were recently under new ownership and if I didn't see what I wanted on the menu he'd be happy to try and accommodate me. I saw they had a peppermint mocha which I love in all seasons and I asked how minty it was. He said he'd gladly tone the mint down for me and so I agreed to order that. He made nice small talk and brought my drink out to where I was sitting to wait. It was a simple interaction, but he made me feel very welcome and at ease and I really appreciate it! I checked out their social media later and saw a picture of him that had just been posted announcing the new ownership -- I wonder if he's one of the new owners? Either way, he was excellent. My drink was also pretty solid. I was missing a *tiny* bit of mocha flavor but the coffee itself was smooth and creamy and the peppermint had been toned down to an ideal level for me. Overall, very well done! I don't live in Athens but this place will be high on my list to return to when I'm in the area next.

Yall please don't come for me but...I'm not sure I get it?…read more This French pastry shop opened up a few years ago after the owner served goods for several years from his house. I've followed loosely since the early days and have always been impressed by the beauty and diversity of the products, and I am pleased that this business has found a permanent brick and mortar home. It's clear that it's very, very popular, as they still sell out of product many days of the week even several years in. This business is veteran-owned as well. However, I've now tried this place 3 times and I just have not been a huge fan of the pastries themselves on any visit. I've held off on writing a review for years because I thought it was something wrong with me or I just got unlucky, but I suppose I have to face the music eventually, lol. Pros: the inside is beautiful! There's not a ton of seating but it's neat as a pin and nicely designed. There's more seating on the patio. Unlike some of the other less positive reviews, 2/3 visits I had lovely interactions with the employees! This most recent visit in particular, the young man working was very friendly and upbeat. My very first visit I remember the staff being a little standoffish, but that was way back when the business first opened and I'm sure opening jitters were still going on. This time, I came with a friend from out of town to catch up before he needed to head back home. We arrived about 2 hours before closing; they were down to 2-3 items each for about 2-3 different types of pastry. My friend just got a coffee; I ordered an almond croissant to eat while we sat, and a chocolate torsades (chocolate puff pastry twist) for later. Of note, the coffee menu is very basic and purist here -- you won't be finding seasonal specials or syrups, just cappuccinos, espresso shots, etc. A little disappointing for me personally but nothing wrong with it inherently. I've had their almond croissant before and didn't love it; I just ordered it again because it was available and generally a favorite of mine. They seem to make theirs by slicing a croissant open and then filling it with almond...something. It's very thin, almost like a glaze. I prefer my almond croissants to have the frangipane baked inside, and also for it to be thicker and more custardy. Idk which way is the "right" way, but this is just my preference. The flakiness factor was good, though parts of the pastry were a little dry. The chocolate torsades I split with my husband for dessert later. It was also just okay. Lacking chocolate for my preference; also, a lot of the chocolate that it did have was still in the form of very tiny chocolate chips that hadn't melted into the pastry and created a sort of hard/almost pebble-y texture when bitten into. Again, I may be speaking in ignorance as perhaps this is how it is supposed to be served; however, this was my genuine feeling about it. All the pastries I've had have been executed adequately, but I just haven't been quite as wowed as many others. This could certainly just be a tastes/preferences thing and I definitely encourage you to give this business a try and form your own opinions about it when you can.
