My favorite sister and I had a great belated birthday lunch for her here at Salty Cod on a fairly quiet and fairly slow Friday that I took off work for - which is rare for me! She enjoyed two lovely cups of their coffee and then I think water, and I had some vino since she was driving. We split a 10 ounce filet mignon (which is not on the lunch menu but is available if you ask for it) and it was beyond delicious! I trusted our excellent server (I think her name was Holly) to select the cut of meat for sister and me from the butcher shoppe, Corkshire, and it was beyond excellent!! It was just as good, if not better than the filet I split with my Sorority Sister when we came here for my birthday in February! Sister and I also shared their take on a bruschetta. It was good; however, for me, it was the "weak link" - I like a traditional bruschetta with buffalo mozzarella, balsamic, fresh ripened tomatoes, etc., and this was more akin to a charcuterie board on toasty bread slices. It looked beautiful! The meat topping was plentiful and lovely, it had more fat on it than I care to have. There was a sort of berry relish on another layer and that's where I called it quits on the bruschetta. My sister did enjoy it, though, which is what mattered! We ordered two mac and English cheddar cheese fritters for Sister, and she really really loved those! They were presented wrapped individually in their to go box, to keep each one warm, and again, Sister, loved them! Neither of us had room for desert which, since Salty Cod has a separate bakery/gelato shoppe, would have offered some delicious options! Yesterday I was in Athens, Al and stopped by the Salty Cod. It was a warm day and I asked the waitress if she could give me some ice to help preserve the foods I was buying since I had a ONE hour drive back home. She provided us with a black garbage bag of ice that she put in the bottom of my cooler. I DID NOT LOOK AT THE ICE! We ordered fried green tomatoes to eat there. The to go order was the Fish and chips, Crab Cakes, and Lemon Chicken Salad. It was 4:45 and the restaurant had 2 people sitting at the bar, us (2), and another two diners. The ice given to cool down and preserve the fish and crab cakes unbeknownst to me had gravel in it. This is the first time in 50 years I have asked a restaurant for ice to cool down foods and gravel be in it. I was HORRIFIED when I took the bag of ice out of my cooler and dumped it in the sink to melt. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT AT ALL!!! Fortunately I had the presence of mind to immediately put a stopper over each drain to try to mitigate gravel going into my garbage disposal and down my drain. I never had to look at ice in 50 years to check for gravel and didn't think I needed to at the Salty COD. The lady chef executed the foods much better last year. The fried green tomatoes tasted like bread crumbs and were a bit charred. The to go foods after the ice episode were very disappointing. The lemon chicken was burnt as were the baby potatoes versus being slightly charred. The fish and chips and crab cakes were a huge disappointment. Fried green tomatoes 2/5 Lemon Chicken Salad 2/5 - chicken has burnt taste Fish and chips - 2/5 - Dave said it didn't taste good Crab Cakes 1/5 - it tasted like canned crab with lots of filling. Very disappointing. I would have given these ratings had there been no gravel in my ice used to chill down my to go order. If you read my previous reviews of this restaurant you will see I enjoyed the foods in the past. With a generous tip the bill was $100. Save your money and go where the foods are worth the prices. I will always check ice in the future. I don't know if it was with malice that gravel was added to the ice. I do know if I worked for the health department, I would be talking to the waitress, the manager and the owner. read more

We don't eat at this restaurant very often since we don't live in the immediate area, but we do try to eat there whenever we are in the area. Our last two visits have been less than yummy. The chips/french fries seemed old/stale and not hot...just barely warm, and there were lots of broke pieces of potato (see picture). My husband got the dry aged burger, and it was overdone and had a LOT of pepper on it. I don't think we will go out of our way to eat there again. We sat at the bar, the bartender was very nice and cordial. The restaurant has a fun vibe, but the quality of the food just isn't what it used to be. read more

Service..we (3 only) had Rachel, lovely trainee, and then she was pulled bc it "got busy". The other server seemed frazzled which is understandable but it took an hour after we had been there 1hr and half..drinks already finished to get our NOT WARM food. We started with fried green tomatoes which didn't even have salt much less any seasoning on them. Hour and some change later , mind you others who came in later got their food much sooner ( 20/30 min), only to get even more disappointed with the actual meal. We had crab cakes, brisket short rib burger, Shepard's pie were the mains. All were just fantastic. Had the chicken Mac and cheese fritters as starters. They were big. Their cakes were outstanding as we shared Limoncello and the Italian Crème cakes. Good vibe with great music playing. Overall we had fabulous service and amazing food/drinks. The vibe was perfect for our dinner out. We ordered the burger and the fish and chips - both were hot and delicious! The Salty Cod is a local Athens treasure. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is friendly, and the restaurant is more than a restaurant. My tastebuds have been so happy when I've eaten at The Salty Cod. My absolute favorite is the French Brie, Proscuitto, & Cranberry Bruschetta. It's probably the most unique and delicious appetizer I've ever had in the greater Huntsville metro area. The last time I visited The Salty Cod, I had the crab cakes. They were perfection on a plate! Not once did I bite into a shell and every bite took me back to the Maryland seashore, only better. I highly recommend them. My hubby's experience with the bangers and mash was a little underwhelming, though. There seemed to be a lack of salt and it could have used some herbs and garlic. I like my bangers quite salty, so I was very glad I didn't order them. My mom had the Bubble & Squeak and she was savoring every bite. She said she would definitely be back for more. It was her first time, so I was happy to be sharing a great restaurant with her. She lives close enough to be able to walk there (or at least drive her scooter). The atmosphere is super friendly. We are always greeted with a smile. Our server last time, Reagan, was so helpful and happy that it made our meal even better. I think every server there is friendly and helpful. The restaurant has an open kitchen, so if you want to see behind the scenes, you can walk right up to it. There's also a bakery storefront and a butcher shop. Both offer unique things you won't find in many other places in the south. All in all, The Salty Cod is a great place for a great meal. read more

The food is sub par. We've eaten several times at their sister restaurant in Huntsville and wanted to give The Salty Cod a try. We ordered the bruschetta for an appetizer. The best word to describe it is chaotic. The flavor is good but there is so much piled on top that it's hard to eat. The shepherds pie is my go to at Poppy & Parliament. It was awful at The Salty Cod. There was a crusty layer of salt on top of it, and so much salt in it that there was no other taste to it. On the flip side, my husband ordered the boozer chicken and it was extremely bland. Our daughter said the chicken tenders weren't great. The only good meal was the fish and chips that my father-in-law ordered. The server was nice but not super attentive. We had to ask for drink refills. There were maybe three other families in the restaurant, and he was not the only person waiting tables. Overall, very disappointing. It was my husband's birthday dinner and I felt bad for him. When you think of countries known for their food, the British Isles don't typically shine in a favorable light for most people. That is really an urban myth from bad television. The food can truly be outstanding. The food and atmosphere here are really memorable. My homemade pastrami sandwich was the best I've ever had. The bread was like a thick pancake or french toast. Amazingly soft. The caramelized onion Gruyère made for a perfect taste complement. It came with salad and a box of their chips. Nice touch. Loved it. My wife had a lemon chicken salad that she couldn't stop raving about. Next time I'll try some dessert. It's really great to find food of this quality. This is our second time. The first was right after the opened and it was outstanding. Today lunch was disappointing. The beef fat chips were not hot and I obviously got the crumbs at the bottom of the batch. The other food was pretty good. The service was terrible. We tried the Salty Cod for the first time last Friday and had a great dining experience. I had the Beef Short Ribs with Broccolini and my girlfriend chose the Bubbles and Squeaks dish. Both entrees were served with excellent presentation and tasted wonderful. We sat at the Chef's table and this allowed us to see various dishes being prepared and we were amazed at the kitchen staff's speed and teamwork. Our server did an excellent job and the Manager stopped by and checked with us to see how our experience was. We were excited to have the "Best Fish and Chips" only to be very disappointed. Our fish was mushy and greasy and the chips were cold. Had to keep requesting ice as our drinks only had a few pieces which quickly melted. Ordered the carrot cake and chocolate mouse cake to share for dessert. Revising and extending my review: I visited The Salty Cod on my way back from Montgomery to Nashville last week and expected the same level of service and quality that I received on my first visit. This time was a huge disappointment. This was on a Thursday evening at about 7:30 and the restaurant was not busy at all. I like the variety of the menu and the Picanha steak was particularly interesting to me. The server was nice enough but not attentive. Despite the dining room being 80% empty it took over an hour to get my meal. Moreover, my steak was not hot which was hard to believe. I suspect she was out having a smoke because she smelled strongly of cigarettes (ugh) and letting my food losing it's heat. The fries were nice and hot (they are quite good btw) but the steak...nope. When she returned to my table after me finishing half the steak, she asked how everything was , I told her my steak wasn't hot she looked at me like she didn't understand and I shrugged my shoulders and said "oh well." She asked if I wanted her to have it heated back up? No ma'am, I don't want a sirloin steak which is already not a tender cut (the cut of meat, not the quality of the steak), to be cooked longer to make it tough and inedible. I told her I'd finish the steak and that was it. She said she'd let a manger know so I thanked her for that. A female manager came to my table shortly thereafter and asked if there was a problem and I said that my steak was not hot and it seemed to have been left on for the server for some time before it was brought to my table. She asked if I wanted another one and I said that I had already been there an hour and I didn't want to wait for another meal. She offered to make another item and I said, "I've been here long enough." She apologized and left the table. What she should have done was remove it from my bill. I'm on an expense account so I don't even care about the money, but that is what professional restaurant owners and managers do. They stand behind their product. The manager did not acknowledge the poor service and try to understand why I would be served a $35 cold piece of meat. This is amateurish and sloppy and to just let an expensive steak be served that way and not make it right for the customer doesn't sit well with me. I'm going to try the Salty Cod again but I hope I don't get that server again. There is a lot to like about this restaurant..very interesting, varied menu, cool atmosphere, nice UK beers on tap and the gelato bar and butcher shop next door are also unique. But, if the service and quality or sub par, they won't make it. Attention to detail wasn't occuring that night. Hopefully it will be in the future. read more

We started with fried macaroni and cheese critters, which were reminiscent of giant hushpuppies but filled with mac & cheese. The sizes were ample and fried beautifully. I ordered the Limestone Lemonade cocktail. It was very light on alcohol and very heavy on lemon. I don't think I'd order that drink again. My husband ordered some kind of chocolate stout beer, and it was great. The entrees at my table were fish and chips and bubble & squeak. Everything fried at this place was perfection. Let's get the basics out of the way. Service was great! Ambience definitely very authentic. Now that that's out of the way...we had the fish and chips...crisp, light, flaky and delicious...embarrassingly these were so good and tasted so much like home that I sobbed through the whole meal as I haven't had fish and chips like these in almost ten years. We had the brie and prosciutto appetiser and it was amazing...with prosciutto made on the premises in their aging room. Our son had the Mac and cheese bites which reminded me of tuna mornay but deep fried into delicious patties.
