I really wanted to love this place and would probably give it 3.5 stars. The service was fantastic - our server did an excellent job - kept our drinks coming and was friendly and professional. I ordered the fish and chips. Overall - the batter texture was perfect (crispy not soggy like some places) but a tad bit greasy. I felt like it was missing a little flavor though. I was mostly disappointed with the chips. It seemed like we got the little bits from the bottom of the bag. It looked like they needed to change the oil in the fryer. Pictures of chips in other reviews do not look like that. The homemade tartar sauce had a good flavour. My daughter got the kids chicken tenders. She enjoyed those although they do not have a selection of sauces like they do at other places - no honey mustard or ranch. Prices were reasonable and I might would try it again. read more

The Salty Cod - Fish and chips. - Pubs Near Me - Athens, Alabama

We had the fish and chips and Mac and cheese fritters. DELICIOUS!! The fish and chips are EXACTLY as they serve them in Wales, Scotland, and England which is a generous portion with light, crispy breading. The bar is nice and the overall atmosphere is top notch. If you are in the area, stop by! read more

Went to The Salty Cod for dinner, was seated right away, had the appetizer Chicken, Mac & Cheese fritter, so delicious with two sauces for dipping, loved the aioli sauce, brought the fritter to another level. Ordered the Fish & Chips, it was a huge piece of Cod, cooked perfectly, was buttery and tender inside and a wonderful crispy outside exactly like a fish & chips should be. The fries were short but very good. Fish was served with a homemade tartar sauce which tasted delicious with the fish, we had a bottle of malt vinegar brought to our table but the fish didn't need it. The best fish & chips I've ever eaten! Be sure and come hungry, it's a huge piece of fish. I even took some home and it heated up just as crispy. The gelato and desserts have their own room, it's worth going in person to choose what you want, we chose a piece of the salted caramel cheesecake, so delicious and a piece of carrot cake. The manager Cara came to our table, she made us feel welcome and service was impeccable. The butcher shop is amazing, meats are aged and very good quality. Will definitely be back again, highly recommend for a special occasion, date night or just a great meal! read more

I went back the second time to try the Picana Steak. I did not have a pleasant experience. All of the potatoes and the broccolini were sort of warm. The steak was cold and raw. I ordered a medium cooked steak and they served me a rare steak. I took it back to the kitchen and it came back with some chard grill marks on it. The steak was still not hot and it was still rare inside. It seem to be a major inconvenience for them, and I did not feel like they cared about me being pleased as a customer... I left very disappointed read more

We've been here twice. Service is always good. The staff is fantastic. Place looks great. Music - when you go to a British pub, you expect British music.. Stone Roses, The Cult, The Cure, The Smiths - loved it. This was the best music I've ever heard while eating anywhere. 1st trip: We got the Chicken Mac & Cheese Fritters - I loved these. WOW! They were fantastic. We both got the fish & Chips: I've had fish and chips in England a few times (little brag there), and the fish was great, but I think I'd do smaller pieces so it doesn't take as long to fry. The last 1/3 of the fish lost its great flavor and just tasted of oil. Fries: Top Class. Loved them. Sadly, the fries tasted greasy by the end because of the fish sitting on top of them. Gelato: HOLY COW! I got the Straciatella - this was fantastic. Best gelato I've gotten that wasn't in Italy (Yeah, that's a brag too.) Second Trip: That playlist crushed. Had a good sized group, and Heather was our server. She rocked. Straight up awesome! We had two pastrami sandwiches: These were excellent. I would advise using a crunchy bread instead of the soft bread. Was too mushy by the 2nd half. Both complained about it. Tasted great, but a French bread would have made it better. I got the burger: I like fried green tomatoes, but these also reminded me of the fish, and had an oily flavor. I took them off, and it made the burger better. The bacon on the burger was great. This was a big winner, burger was great. Meat was flavorful and perfectly cooked - Medium. I would get this again. We also tried the shrimp - batter was a little thick for me, but my daughter loved it. Fries - everyone loved the fries. Man those fries are crack. I didn't want to eat all of them, so had to pull back so I would have room for GELATO! Everyone loved it. LOVED IT! I'm glad they are in Athens, and continue to get better. read more

This restaurant is phenomenal! The service is excellent, and the food is amazing. They have a good selection of beers from around the world and their cocktails are outstanding, as well. The folks that run and own this place also run Poppy and Parliment in Huntsville, so the definitely kn9w what they're doing! read more

Brand new in Athens! Food is great, drinks are fun. Come here and chill. Enjoy the ambiance and relax while they feed you. Servers are still finding their rhythm, but, this will be a great spot once the new jitters wear off. Everyone is eager to please! Fish and chips is fab, that homemade tarter sauce is great! You cannot take your plastic cups in here so be mindful. read more

The Salty Cod - Fish and chips! - Pubs Near Me - Athens, Alabama

Lovely restaurant with kind waitresses, staff & chef. We had the Fish & Chips. It was just like fish & chips in any US restaurant. Fish crust was greasy. Chips were overcooked; hard & dark brown. It did not taste like British Fish & Chips. We visited the Corkshire Butcher co (next door) and purchased 2 lbs of Cumberland sausages @ $8.99 per lb. Can't wait to try them. The meal was very expensive...$26 per meal for fish & fries. No sides; only mushy peas (gag) & curry sauce. Plus tax & tip. I am British. read more

Service was amazing, fritters were amazing. When it came to the lunch menu, every entree was not it. I got the shrimp and candied bacon, my shrimp had an odor that was out of this world. The boozy chicken had an off taste and the kids fish was questionable. We felt bad because we didn't eat anything so we took it to go but ended up throwing it away in a trash can nearby. read more

Drinks were good. Fish and chips - both were way too salty! Had to stop eating it. Wife ate some and took rest home to dog. Smashed peas- yuck! I am an old southern boy, this ain't the way you fix peas!! Will come back once more to try shepard's pie. read more

I couldn't wait to cut into this before i took a picture. Sorry not sorry.. It was the best meal we've had in Athens ever. I don't know why that review 19 days ago was so hostile. (hangry?) The Salty Cod - ! Thank u for a great meal! - Pubs Near Me - Athens, Alabama

Since I can't rate the food, I'll share my experience. My husband and I went to The Salty Cod today, we sat at the bar and placed our order which was for 2 orders of fish and chips. We waited for about an hour and a half we never received our order but the couple that came 30 minutes after us and sat next to us, with the same order received theirs. My husband paid for our drinks, we talked to the manager and left ‍. It might be a great restaurant but I don't think we will go back there. Since we were annoyed and hungry we went to Village Pizza,, the service was GREAT and our pizza was DELICIOUS! read more

The fish and chips and the sticky toffee pudding were great! The service was also wonderful at lunch and dinner!

The Salty Cod is a gem in the middle of a perfect small town square. The place is gorgeous on the outside and in and you can watch chef Kristen cook your meal as it's an open kitchen. The food is absolutely phenomenal and the service is sharp. read more

My husband and I went to The Salty Cod today after talking about it since they opened. We both ordered the Fish and Chips and for a lunch order it was huge! Our Server was Nina and she went above and beyond making sure everything was just right. Between the food, service and music we enjoyed ourselves very much. Looking forward to coming back again. read more

The Salty Cod - Fish & Chips - Pubs Near Me - Athens, Alabama

We ate at Salty Cod today, it was a big disappointment. The small Fish and Chips is $18.00 and the large $26.00, our waitress discouraged us from ordering the small because it is like a "kids meal" with only one piece of fish. So we all (4) ordered the large and it came with 2 pieces of fried fish thrown on fries in a box! We all felt cheated. The ketchup packets were under the fries in the box, the tartar sauce was in a plastic condiment container, just like a take out box. It was like I went through the drive through at Captain D's. The fish was fresh but very greasy, the fries were dry and lukewarm. The waitress was nice, that is the only positive comment I can make. read more

I had very high hopes because I've eating at the Poppy and Parliament which I believe is the same owner but I was very disappointed. I don't like eating from a box (for what they charge) and the menu is very limited. I would try it again if they had more traditional English/ Irish meals. read more

So, the fish and chips were really good, as well as the appetizer. The atmosphere is neat and looks like an English pub. I will say, though, that I ordered the 100 day aged steak, and it tasted rancid. I couldn't handle it, and it was expensive for such a waste of food. I didn't want to say anything about it to the server, because I've never had a steak aged that long, and I didn't know if it's supposed to taste like that. If it's supposed to taste like a tough rotted piece of meat, then I don't think I'll be eating anymore meat that's been aged past 30 days. Especially when I'm paying that much for it. read more

My daughter and I had dinner at The Salty Cod tonight. I had fish and chips and my daughter had the crab cakes. The food was absolutely marvelous. Oh, and of course, we took dessert home. Yum! read more

Outdoor seating was perfect for Milo (doggie) and I! Food was delicious and service was great!

We stopped in to check the place out. Too late for lunch and too soon for dinner for us. Ended up in their dessert room. Cute area with a couple pub tables to sit and have coffee and dessert. The chef made 3 pasties- a leek & cheese, spinach & cheese and a sweet blueberry & cheese pastry . We tried the spinach & cheese. They warmed it up for us which was nice. It was simple and tasted ok. There were fresh cinnamon rolls made that morning as well. For $3 I thought why not try it later. We also ate a slice of chocolate mousse cake. "It was good without being rich but, didn't knock my socks off" per my husband. I also agreed. The staff was very nice and helpful when we asked questions. $6 a slice isn't a bad price point. Knowing this is the sister company to Huntsvilles Poppy & Parliament we expect the same quality of food for Salty Cod. We will give it another try when we are in the area, but I don't think we will go out of the way just to there. read more

Food was very bad, aside from the mac and cheese fritters apetizer. The fish in the fish and chips tasted off, the frog legs were tasteless and the I had a sandwich that was entirely soggy. The service was decent though and the place looked good for the atmosphere. read more

The Salty Cod is the coolest place in Athens. It does smell a little "fish and chip" heavy (it might be the first restaurant where the bathroom smells better than the dining room) but don't be scared away by that; because the rest of the place is Awesome!! They optimized space, bar seating, and menu. The menu is sophisticated, without being too exotic- and although some of the prices might look a little steep, my husband and I got out of there tonight for $33 + tip, which we found very reasonable. We have been a few times, and all the items are good no matter the price point. We actually enjoyed our "cheaper" meal tonight more- as these were the best chicken tenders I've ever had. Also that burger was massive- somewhere between a cantaloupe and a softball. Please give them a try! And don't forget to stop by the sweet shop on your way out. read more

Salty Cod, please up your game!! We had such high hopes for you. But bad fish, dry chicken and an apathetic manager, along with a $200 check does not equal success. Please do better. We want you to succeed. read more

Went today 3/16. First time. BOTTOM LINE - WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!! Four of us went for lunch. One, small fish and chips, one small sandwich (included fries). Two small pork pig dishes. Two drafts, one wine and an ice tea. $140.00 with tax and tip. PLUS.... they served in a cardboard box, plastic utensils. Ever cut up pork in a little box with plastic utensils? Not easy. $19 for a little piece of cod and some fries. $19 for a small sandwich and fries. Then they charge another $3.00 for an ice tea. Always go over to Madison/Huntsville for restaurants. Guess I still will. Will never go back to this place. read more

I was really trying hard to not give this place a bad review. I went @3 weeks ago and we got their special chicken chowder which was FANTASTIC! And we split the fish and chips which was also really good. FFW to this Friday. I took my son who was in town visiting and had not had fish and chips before so again, this place was good! I wanted his first experience with them to be great and not fast food. My boyfriend got a special and I got the soup. Both were good. Nothing to complain about... BUT.... My son got the fish and chips. We waited an hour for our food. His came and the breading immediately just fell off leaving a small amount of actual fish. For $26 I was just saddened that this is what they're known for and they couldn't get IT right! It's going to be hard for me to even want to go back there but if I do, I will not ever order the fish and chips again. Please Salty Cod, get it right! This is what you're known for. Pic is just to show all the breading that fell off. read more

You can't go wrong with The Salty Cod. Nina our server did a good job of guiding us through the specials and menu We have been there numerous times and never come away disappointed. We have tried this place twice and had poor experiences each time. The first time was a few months after they opened, where our meal (and others seated around us) took 2.5 hours due to grossly inattentive staff and getting one of our orders wrong. They comped us one of the incorrect food items but our bill was still $71 for two people and no alcohol, which would have been fine if the food were good but it was incredibly mediocre. We didn't go back for a long time because of this experience, but tried them again for takeout recently hoping they had improved. Still very expensive, and my husband's (entree) Shepherd's Pie was a bit of soup-looking substance in a very small, maybe pint sized container. I had fish and chips, some of which was okay but a lot of it was greasy breading. And once again, it was expensive, which would have been fine if the Shepherd's Pie had been of appropriate size for a dinner entree, and if the fish and chips were really good. But they weren't. We really wanted to like this place but have found it very overpriced (and we will gladly spend $$$ on a good meal) and we're disappointed by the food both times. Thankfully there are many other great places to eat in Athens now, where you can get a MUCH better meal for a lot less. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at the Salty Cod! We ordered the Fish and Chips and the steak. Both were fantastic! After dinner, we walked into the dessert shop and ordered 4 different desserts to take home. I'll definitely be back. Since this is a newer restaurant in Athens, I truly believe that the lower reviews were just normal growing pains of a new business. Based on my experience, they have really grown since they first opened. read more

Went with group of friends did not take long to get seated. I had the fish and chips with the curry sauce. I have to say the curry sauce I have to say fish was great and I was impressed with the curry sauce since I have relatives from india I know good curry sauce and this was good. Service was alright. The desserts now they were excellent. If nothing else go to their dessert shop. The menu was a nice change from the normal menus from around the area. Every enjoyed the dishes they had. plan on going back. I gave 3 stars just felt like service could have been much better read more

We had the fish 'n chips and chicken fingers. The cod was fried to perfection. The dill tartar sauce was good as was the curry sauce. The chicken was tender. The fries were not as good. They had a spongy/undone texture. We didn't try any of the many desserts, but the display case was tempting. The pub was charming and British styled, and the downtown locale just quaint! The waitress was attentive and friendly! Glad we went at lunch for the lunch prices. read more

Food was okay except for the fish and chips. The fish and chips were brought to the table and it was cooked properly but smelled rotten and tasted that way per others at the table. I had a burger it was good as were the chips ( note English chips are French fries). Service was okay 2 different managers addressed the issue with the fish and chips. It was removed from the bill and a different entree was selected. It was initially noisy as we sat up front close to the entrance as wait times were stated 20 mins were closer to 35 mins. It's is $$$ for 4 people basic meal 4 teas no appetizers were ordered. read more

Outstanding menu in Athens, Alabama, excellent service and food. I had an Irish Soup(stew) that was out of this world. Must go back soon.

Service was friendly, attentive, and efficient. The food was delicious!! Definitely recommend!!

Dine at the Salty Cod tonight, looked like a good crowd both inside and on the "patio". Overall I was disappointed. My wife and I had one drink and we had the fish and chips + crab cakes, bill was $70! The food was passable and the service mediocre. Food comes in a paper box served on a wooden tray. Asked for ketchup for the frys and got a tiny portion in a cup, ketchup barely covered the bottom. Got a second cup of ketchup which was about 1/3 full. Seems like they do everything to maximize profits. Wouldn't go back. Disappointing. read more
