Bikram yoga has been a life changer for me - I struggle with back/shoulder pain from minor scoliosis on top of the normal side effects of a desk job. The combination of the heat and the targeted spine strengthening series has made a huge difference in alleviating pain and building back strength. I've attended three bikram studios in the DMV area and Reston Yoga is my favorite. The instructors mentioned in previous negative reviews do not teach here anymore. The studio is cheery and clean and the staff, instructors, and students are very friendly. Particular shoutout to Yun and Julie for their calm but motivating teaching style and for being so welcoming when I brought my partner to try a class! Tip for first class - attend an Original class (and hydrate a lot!) Request - Please add more weekday morning options (60 min or a 6-7:30). I loved the 7am pop-up class last Friday! The evening classes can be challenging to fit with work schedules. I appreciate the mix of original and limited instruction classes; please continue to offer both! read more

In light of the pandemic, and the new social distancing guidelines: I am one of those who does (did) not like the virtual classes, but, was thrilled when you opened up the studio for the in-person practice. And since June, I have been there, trying NOT to miss a single class. I know we all say "Thank you" to the teacher at the end of the class, but, knowing how much it takes to get the room prepped and ready for the class, the clean-up after each session, the temperate taking before the class, the 10 ft of social distancing at ALL TIMES - all of that, and more.... I, for one, so appreciate it. Thanking Rima and all the teachers - both in-studio and virtual staff, who are taking the time and making the effort, so the rest of us can be there. and practice. I'll start with the positive. They take credit cards, and the instructors were really nice. Now, let me tell you a little story..... Once upon a time, a friend of a friend went on vacation, and I went to his house to feed his pets. Much to my surprise, this 2-bedroom house had approximately 7 puppies, 8 cats, 5 ferrets, 10 birds, a chinchilla, a few more ferrets, several animals I could not recognize, and a few fully grown dogs. It was clear that they'd been living in their own filth for at least a few days, and if the police had come in, they would have taken the animals away and condemned the house. That house is what Bikram Yoga Reston smells like. I'm used to hot weather, but 110 degrees is just too much to exercise in, and I can't imagine that it's safe. Everyone seems to get some degree of heat exhaustion, and the instructors claimed that the dizziness and nausea mean "it's working" and "you're getting stronger". I don't buy it, since I used to live in Texas and know that this is exactly what heat exhaustion feels like and that it's not good for you at all. The "regulars" at this class were skin and bones, and didn't appear to be physically strong. Despite drinking plenty of water, I felt dehydrated for two days after each class I attended. The instructors swore that this type of exercise is safe and healthy for all ages and levels of fitness, but most people in the class had to sit down periodically due to heat exhaustion, even though the yoga poses themselves weren't terribly difficult. In addition to the health aspects, it's just plain gross. When the males in the class leaned to the side for a pose, sweat came gushing down their arms and off their fingertips like waterfalls. Because of the heat, both males and females in this class were averse to wearing a lot of clothes, with females often opting for string bikinis. They were also averse to shaving. And last, but certainly not least....Why the eff would they make this room CARPETED? read more

Best Bikram by far! This is the forth Bikram place I have tried in the WDC area. Dupont Bikram was pretty good but the space was old and odd. Rockville Bikram was good but not very hot, Bethesda Bikram had some issues because it was new but Reston Bikram has it down pat. Got a 30 day membership through one of those coupon sites. I went less than I planned to go but enough times to realize they have the temp set just right. They also give you a cold lavender soaked towel at the end of the session. Love it! Great post-run for stretching and loosening tight, sore muscles. It takes some getting used to the heat for sure, I have found the later in the day the hotter the room gets. read more

I have to say this is one of the most intense workouts I have ever endured, its challenging to the point of almost breaking you. Although the lavender towels at the end make it all worth the seemingly hellish workout. I have gotten the owner as my instructor several times who doesn't have great people skills in my opinion, that's the main reason I quit going because I just simply didn't want to pay good money for that type of service. The other instructors I have had were very nice and easy to deal with. The location is quite convenient, and certainly if you want to push yourself to the limit this is a great thing to do. The other drawback the packages are pricey, but if this is your main work out and you get results then more power to you. read more

It's interesting to me that the negative reviews here are mostly about Bikram yoga itself and not this studio. If you don't know what Bikram is I would advise doing a little research before signing up for a class. Actually their website is very informative, if you are curious I would check it out before hand. (see "first timers" tab) This studio is smaller than some of the others in the area, but small isn't always a bad thing. The staff is warm and inviting and the classes are exactly what I need after a long day at work. The lobby and bathrooms are kept tidy and are nicely decorated. The yoga studio is well lit, mirrored and I love looking up at the clouds on the ceiling tiles in Savasana. Contrary to what some people have posted, the studio is kept very clean and does not have a lingering smell. (just an FYI) Several years ago a girlfriend invited me to a Bikram class here and although at the time I wasn't so sure hot yoga was for me, upon my return to this studio last week I am happy to see that many of the same instructors have remained. I am eager to continue my practice and reap the benefits of this type of yoga. I do wish the studio would bring back the cool lavender scented towels at the end of class though. Reston is probably my favorite bikram studio, though it is one of the smaller ones. It is a rectangular room with "hardwood" but squishy (probably rubber) flooring, which I find to be very sanitary. Between classes, they wipe down the floors and mirrors because there is a lot of condensation. All in all, I've noticed that this studio never really smells as bad as the other studios. There are strange sky+cloud light coverings over the fluorescent lights amongst the ceiling tiles (reminiscent of those found in schoolrooms) that I like to stare at when in savasana and try to see faces in the clouds. Honestly, they kind of clash with the lilac purples walls haha. Dressing room is decent sized, but you will definitely have to dodge people going in or out based on the cramped layout. Overall it's pretty bare and not too much to speak of. Note: This is the only studio that does not give you a cold towel at the end. Best Perk: Barcode key tags for easy scanning upon check-in. Very clean yoga studio, very nice teachers. I felt super posh when I walked in - they sold smart water and zico water, they have racks of fancy yoga clothes, and they give you chilled lavender towels after class. Fancy! One thing that I wasn't a fan of was the super slippery floors and the fact that the carpet felt wet from what was probably the last class's sweat. Ew. The classroom size is decent, but classes get full during popular hours, so get there early if you don't want to sweat in the corner. It would be nice if the locker rooms were less cramped because I swear, one day I will slip and fall trying to maneuver through that craziness. Overall, the studio is good and the promotion price is unbeatable. The instruction is hit or miss, but that's always going to be the case - I'd recommend joining and finding the right instructor for you. I attended Bikram Yoga Reston this afternoon and was not impressed with Reggie's teaching style. (I've been doing BY for 10+ years in L.A.) 1. Unfriendly when I checked in. Turns out it was Reggie, the teacher, who checked me in. It was my first time to the studio, visiting from out of town, and Reggie couldn't have been LESS welcoming, interested or helpful. 2. I paid $30 for a newcomer package and they charged me $4 for a mat rental, total turnoff and double the price for May rental as most studios. 3. The class. Although technically Reggie led the class through the poses accurately, he led by negativity. (It made me so appreciate my practice in L.A. where there is only positivity and support.) Reggie was calling out people's names and verbally correcting them, which did not engender a meditative atmosphere. There was not one call out of a person's name with a positive comment. It was not the spiritual and meditative experience that I'm used to. I feel sorry for people who have only had Reggie or similar. I couldn't get out of the studio fast enough and will not return, even though I paid for 2 weeks. read more

I have been in the fitness industry for over 10 years, including some Yoga teaching experience. I have taken Birkarm before, so I am not new to the discipline. I was excited to try this studio because I heard so many great things. It. was. TERRIBLE. From cleanliness, to friendliness, to downright SAFETY, this place is a law suit waiting to happen. The instructor came in, never introduced himself, and looked at his watch the entire class. He told the class that no one could get up and leave the room at any time, and that we could not get water if anyone was in the middle of a posture. I understand the "rules" of the practice, but in a room that is 105 and 95% humidity, its just unsafe to not "allow" certain behaviors. One girl got up and tried to leave during class, and she was yelled at to "sit back down". You have to be kidding me! Half of the class laid on their mat, or sat with their head down for over half of the class. How is this productive or helping anyone further their practice? With so much experience in the industry, I am aware of my body and my limitations. But I also know that most of my clients are not even close to being aware. So what happens when someone pushes them self too far, is scared to leave a hot room or drink water, and passes out? What if they have a health condition that the instructor failed to ask about? My advice? Stay far, far, away from this place. Find a studio that is welcoming, aware of your limitations, and helps you further your practice! read more

Fantastic yoga studio!! Teachers teach in a positive encouraging manner. The studio is clean, friendly and has the perfect combination of teacher personalities. Since there are so many classes during the week, you really get to choose the right one for you. I've been practicing for over a year now and I have never seen or heard ANY of the instructors act the way some of the previous reviews claim. I love all of the instructors here!! No, it is NOT a cult! Why would you even put that in a review (to a previous reviewer). Perhaps you need to engage in some more yoga my friend, to release the inner demon within. Come try the freshly squeezed orange juice...that should turn that frown upside down! I will say that Bikram yoga is a challenging workout. Be prepared when you decide to try it. Read up on it. Check it out on YouTube. Read the books that Bikram wrote as to why the room is heated and why it's the sequential 26 postures. Then decide for yourself if this is what you want to try. Don't blame it on the method if you're caught by surprise. Lastly, yoga is about you. It is a 90min meditation..on yourself. People will wear what they wear, do what they do in class. If you can't even devote 90min out of your day to just focus on yourself to become a better you, find another activity. This yoga will strengthen your mind, body and soul if you choose to let it. I have never felt better in my life, never more confident, never more healthy. I hope everyone gives Bikram yoga a try! I just wanted to respond to the review left by Erin C. I actually witnessed the whole thing because I was in the same class this morning at 7:45am. The way the instructor was portrayed is way off. First, he did ask everyone in the class if they have any injuries. This is where most people chime in about their injuries. When students let them know about injuries, they are always accommodating. I know because my husband tore both his ACLs and they were really diligent in making sure he was ok. This same instructor told him to "do what you can." Everyone was given the opportunity to speak up, and if nobody mentions anything its assumed everyone is in good health. This morning, nobody brought up any injuries. Second, the instructor wasn't treating anyone like a child about drinking water. One of the first things the instructor asked us to do was sip our waters before the warm-up started. This is in fact for our own good. Right after the warm up, we are all encouraged to drink and to drink between postures. I've never interpreted the instructor as saying "you can't drink because I said so." Its just about respecting the practice and not distracting the others in class. Regarding the "Child Pose", there isn't such a pose in Bikram. If anything, the instructor was simply trying to get you practice Bikram, instead of "free styling" it. I never once got the impression he was trying to force you to do anything. He was simply doing his job, which was to teach Bikram yoga. If he sees some free styling, of course he's going to correct it. I understand that you may be injured, but that is why we're all given the opportunity to speak up. They do understand and work with injuries. Lastly, from what I recall you said "I think I want to leave." The instructor never kicked you out as you implied. For the record, I've been going to this studio for over a year and half. The instructors are all very knowledgeable, and some are tougher than others. This morning, we happened to have a tough one. But being tough shouldn't be misconstrued as being insulting. He has good intentions. read more

I went here for a few months. Some of the instructors are more soothing and kind than others. I wasn't that impressed with the studio itself. It seems like there isn't proper ventilation. It's hot and almost musty smelling. Classes were always very packed. Instructors should open doors to give a whiff of air more often. I'm also sad that there were no lavender towels. read more

The staff at Bikram Yoga Reston are amazing. Although they guide you through the traditional Bikram routine, they each bring a different dimension. Siri Om is evidence of what yoga can do for your mind, body and soul. She knows how to talk you through minor corrections in the poses to get maximum benefit without feeling like she's actually pushing you. I feel the best after her sessions. Reggie is high energy and motivating. He remembers names and pushes you to do the best you can. No skating by with average performance in this class. You are likely to enjoy a little tune from him during savasana (He sang on stage at the Obama Inaugural concert). Graham is soothing and calming. Very strong but passive presence in the room, if that makes sense. Facilities are OK, although I don't have much to compare with. Women's changing room is a little awkward with the rush to get in or get out. Location is great and they have lots of class times available. First timers definitely take advantage of the special rates for an unlimited week ($25) or month ($75). Students can enjoy 10% off unlimited packages as well. I got a deal from Living Social to try this. I have done yoga on and off for about 2 years at the Reston Y, which has always been enjoyable. I will unequivocally say, that "enjoyable" in this first session of Bikram, did not come until about 20 minutes after class when my body truly felt refreshed. It is a HARD CORE workout. You really need to drink about a gallon of water before getting to class, because you will sweat a half gallon while in there. The instructor, Scott, was great for experienced people as well as beginners to Bikram, like myself. It wasn't about the "you must hold the post to get the benefit". It was about pushing yourself to the point where your body felt comfortable. Very refreshing. Studio was nice, you were able to take water breaks or lying down breaks as needed, no issues that i saw. And I was certainly one to take a break between poses 2 or 3 times. It's expensive as a member, and I'm not sure I'd want to do this 3 times a week, but it is still very cool. read more

I can stand the heat, but I can't stand the bad smell (sorry for my language, but it seriously smells like pee) in the room. I've been in there for 3 classes. I guess the ventilation sys is not functioning well. Thats how the pee smell gets into the room. I had hard time finishing the class cus of the smell and I gotta constantly use my extra towel to cover my nose. Bikram in Tysons is so much better. The room is clean and bright. Class environment is really important. I hope Bikram Reston will get the issue fixed soon. I am not satisfied with the fact that they counted the missed class as used class. I am not sure if it was because I was using living social which caused me not able to redeem the missed class. If that is the case, I would not be happy about it, because I feel that I am being treated differently compare to other student. Just because I am using the deal that they are offering, it doesn't mean they can treat us unfairly as not being able to redeam the missed class. Bikram in Tysons allow us to redeemed the missed class even though I am using the living social voucher. read more

If you enjoy stretching while entrenched in sweat and the challenge of breathing in a room more humid than a sauna, look no further than Bikram Yoga in Reston. Although the Bikram Yoga style has come under intense controversy http://articles.latimes.com/2005/mar/21/health/he-yogacase21/3 it certainly promotes greater flexibility and the stamina to walk through a desert (should you desire). The cost is somewhat prohibitive if you do a series of drop-ins and the monthly+ packages are pricey. However, if you are one of the many that try and fall in love with this type of yoga then working it out at Bikram Yoga in Reston may well be worth your money. Yoga instructors are critical in shaping and deepening your practice. I tend to favor the ones who are supportive and nurturing yet focused on accuracy of the posture. Siri Om and Ping are my favorite teachers at this studio. They are both very patient, will assist you with your poses WITHOUT singling you out while mispronouncing your name military style in the middle of the class (*ahem), and are available before and after class to answer questions. Siri is especially proficient in performing the poses herself and is a joy to watch and learn from. If you decide to go, make sure you eat enough but time it so there's no consumption 4hours before your scheduled class (I learned that the hard way), bring a minimum of 16oz of water and a backup Gatorade right after class, 2 towels, and your mat. Rima, her instructors, and staff are truly decent people, all very positive, interesting, quite diverse, well-educated, well-traveled, multi-lingual, engaging, and highly qualified, who try their best, and definitely succeed in consistently presenting an exceptional workout experience. There are a broad selection of instructors, each with his/her own personality and style, so students can easily choose among them in the dozens of classes offered weekly. Every drop of sweat is mopped up after every class. Floor is a laminate specially designed for hot yoga rooms, no longer carpet. Place smells fine. 26 postures are enough to challenge anyone. Plenty of room. Outstandingly well-run, in all respects. I noticed results immediately... more calm, relaxed, stress-resistant, productive, happy. I'm a huge fan of this place, and the instructors. I love Stephen, Reggie, and Joe. All give great adjustments and are mindful of the class's energy. Was not a fan of Christine's class, the class was getting too hot and she didn't open the doors, (usually done very briefly to bring in fresh air and cool down when a room gets too hot) despite TWO people leaving and at least 30% of the class clearly going white, struggling. She's also too fast. the studio has plenty of classes varying with the instructors on staff....they carry hey gouter tonics too, and have a water cooler. Also NOT a fan of the front desk staff - they can be very uppity. That's the only reason i docked a star. read more

It's been a few weeks, well about a month since I got back down to the home office in Reston so I got out of work at 3:30pm for the 4:00pm class. The Director Rima was in and we had a great conversation on what they are doing there to continually improve their business. On cleanliness, she has a professional cleaning service come in twice a day, that is a real plus. She also mentioned that they have the carpets in the yoga studio steam cleaned twice a month. I find this extrememly important as a customer that I am practicing in an environment that is clean and well maintained. Today I noticed that the room heating was very hot but evenly distributed. This is great because many times you have hot, dry air blasting in your face making it hard to breath. Overall I am a solid fan and hope you all get a chance to take advantage of their introductory special. Support this business! read more

I have become a regular at Bikram Yoga, Reston. I find the practice physically and mentally restorative. In this regard, it compares favorably with other forms of yoga practice I've studied. As other reviewers have noted, many of the instructors are wonderful--skilled coaches for learning the forms. Their approaches and styles vary, and that seems good in addressing the needs of a variety of students. With the large number of classes, and variation in approach to instruction that I've observed, I'm mystified as to why some other reviewers obsess about one or another instructor. The online schedule shows who is teaching each class, so one can arrange to study more with some instructors than with others. I used a new student package that allowed unlimited classes for a week to sample various class times (some more crowded than others), familiarize myself with different teaching styles, and figure out whether this would be a good place to learn and practice yoga. The large number of classes, and opportunities to practice yoga with several instructors who inspire in different ways--for someone with my busy schedule, and appreciation of skilled instruction, that's a very good arrangement. I will add that the studio is immaculately clean, which also makes a difference to me, and I like that silence in the practice room is encouraged, to enhance the meditative aspect of this yoga practice. read more

This is only the second yoga studio I have been to and the 3rd or so month of practicing Bikram. As a beginner, I found the studio to be welcoming and friendly. I was there using a Groupon so I just finished 10 classes. I liked the studio...it was very clean, but sometimes there was a little bit of smell in the studio. I had 7 or 8 different instructors during my 10 classes since I went at different times and each was helpful, kind, and helpful. They have cold filtered water available there and that was SUPER convienient. I'm not sure how the heat is supposed to work in the studios (since this is only my second studio experience), but the instructors would adjust the heat during class and would open the doors frequently. If the heat is supposed to be set and not touched as the class goes on then you might find this to be distracting. Also, the studio itself was silent but you can definitely hear the loud, happy, friendly, cheerful voices in the lobby before class (everyone is friends which is lovely!) It can be loud; never bothered me, but again, might be distracting to some. A note about Bikram yoga...everyone is welcome...all body shapes, sizes, beginners, or experienced. No one looks at you because they are focused on themselves in the mirror (and if you look at someone, the instructor quickly tells you to look back at yourself!) It is refreshing and I cannot get over the change in my body, posture, skin, and mood...after just 10 visits! I highly recommend this studio. I found their inviting, kind nature to be enough to keep me coming back for each of the 10 classes and now for many more. read more

I've always hated going to the gym, the workouts I used to do were so mundane and they never inspired me to work harder...My friend had tried Bikram Yoga here last summer and highly recommended it, so I thought I would give it a shot. I'm not going to lie...it was INTENSE. I had one of the hardest workouts I've ever had, but I have never felt better afterwards. Trust me, abide by their instructions and do not eat 2-3 hours before. I made the mistake of eating a bit of mac-n-cheese 45 minutes before, bad idea. My second class was 10 times better than the first, the 3rd even better than the 2nd, and soon I couldn't get enough. I signed up for the 3 month unlimited package, and I definitely do not miss the gym. Bikram yoga has not only calmed my restless mind, but I feel so much better about myself. TRY it, seriously. These people just need to go a second time to find out, and should keep a more open mind :) read more

I started Bikram Yoga in Reston several months ago. I was looking for some intense exercise outside of the normal gym routine. What I soon realized was that the Reston studio is an eclectic community consisting mostly of intense practitioners with an assortment of mid-level folks and plebians like me. The exercise is exceptional. The heat makes the process work much better than a normal or warm temperature. You sweat out whatever needs to go with a tolerance for stretching enabled by the heat. Posture and general movement improve significantly and you tend to look better after a few months. People in my age range, older, may think it is too intense, which it may be for some. But I've found it vastly improves how I feel and move. The message from all instructors is don't overdo it - stop and rest if you need to. It is important to get used to the different instructors and focus on your improvement rather than keeping up with or competing with others. You are practicing with many who have several years under their belts. It takes time to build observable competence but not much time to benefit significantly regardless of your skill level. The studio is well worth the time and fees and I am grateful that it is located right in the middle of Reston. Very highly recommended. read more

It was ok. I have been doing yoga for years on the west coast and other parts of Virginia but this class was different. The instructor was very detailed and would call you out for little things like doing right or left first. Okay style but I prefer someone to provide discrete hands on adjustments... Also it is pure pure bikram with the same sequence of poses...probably personal preference but I like bikram fusion better for the variety of poses and music played during the workout. It was tough and that kept my attention but I'd get bored here if I went more frequently. Finally the teacher was pretty no nonsense and it felt more like boot camp than yoga. read more

I'm very pleased with this studio and have been coming here since 2010. The instructors are warm, kind and helpful and the studio is small, but serene and comfortable. I've been to many Bikram studios throughout the country and this is one of the best. I feel like instructors recognize me and do their best to help my practice improve. Please consider "reviewing the reviewer" when reading other posts. Bikram yoga is different than any other type of yoga. This studio stays true to the practice and I appreciate that instructors attempt to create and maintain the flow of energy in the class and our moving meditation. Hot yoga is suppose to be great for your body and extremely relaxing but it can get very smelly in the rooms. they need to work out a better ventilation. I was in there for the first time and there were maybe 25 people, about half men half women, and i did not know one of the poses would have me bending behind someone's behind right up in my face, and they smelled horrid. towards the last 30 minute of the class it gets difficult to relax because some people sweat more than others and the smell can vary. i am not sure how good this is for your body to sweat this much unnaturally as it has not been proven to be beneficial. i felt dizzy and light headed during and after class, and may try it again at some point down the road, but perhaps another place and at an earlier time. read more

This studio is bright and airy and the instructors I met were very nice and were kind to me as a beginner but also helped to correct my form and encouraged me to push beyond the limits I had set for myself in my mind. Bikram is not for everyone. Make sure you are hydrated and bring towels. As they say, the goal of your first class is to not leave the room! This place is quite nice, it is a bit pricier than what I was paying for Bikram in Albuquerque, NM but most things here in VA are- so I am not surprised. I wish I could remember his name (male, Asian instructor) he is AWESOME. He was very attentive to everyone's individual needs, and always remembered your name. and sometimes he'll sing to you :) The studio and facilities are clean and the class schedule could probably accommodate almost anyone's life. read more

This studio is just ok. It is located in an older office building and there is really not a lot of decoration or ambiance. It just looks pretty run down and has a musty smell. The locker room has two showers, so after the 6am class, expect to stand in line for the shower. The water pressure in the shower was extremely uncomfortable and it felt like a pressure washer. Next time I will probably go to a class at a time where I don't have to get ready there. The class I took was 90 minutes. It was pretty good. The instructor was friendly and walked you through every pose. Unlike other yoga classes that I have taken, the instructor did not come around and correct your posture/form of you were not doing the pose correctly. The price of the yoga classes here are astronomical. For the quality of the studio and amenities they offer, I do not think I will be coming back. read more

Three years ago, I discovered Bikram Yoga Studio in Reston, VA. I never thought that I would become a regular in the times of the quarantine. I always enjoyed the classes at the studio; but guess what? I am enjoying even more the virtual classes! All the teachers are very knowledgeable, professional and super fun. It has been a great way to keep my mind calm and my body active. My virtual practice at Bikram Yoga Reston has become a happy place to relax, meditate and get positive vibes. Okay, so the good parts first: The instructors are good. Which is the reason you come here, yes? They are helpful, supportive and really take their time to explain the poses and how to get into them deeper. Of course it's hot, that's what their theory is--that the heat detoxes you and loosens the ligaments, tendons and muscles. Now the entertaining bad: First and foremost, the owner/director is a total B. She is, in essence, the soup nazi of Bikram. It was our second class and I had to tell my wife that she was doing the pose opposite to what the instuctor said. A mere whisper got the owner so riled up that she had to step over to me and wave her hand wildy with a "SHUUUUSHHHHH!" Fine, this is supremely serious for her and helping another in class is a sin. OK. Now on to the next this, so just bear with me a bit here as I ramble a bit...in our past class the instructor told us that if you are feeling the heat too much, just step out for a moment or two and come back. In THIS particular class (the instructor was a guy and Nazi Rima was in the class with us) and as people were needing to get up and go (one lady was about to faint, and another about to vomit) she started to sneer and talk to her neighbor that this isn't allowed and "WTF are they doing." Umm, is this a cult? If you can't stand the heat, get the F out. I'm a medical professional and it's just not healthy to stay in that unless you feel like cooking your brain. So a) SHE was allowed to talk, but we weren't and b) people are supposed to cook, faint and throw up in class. Honestly towards the end of class I felt a bit faint myself and needed to leave. The instructor coaxed me to stay and the lady in front smiled and I sort of chuckled at it. After class, we overheard her telling her friend that people find this funny and are not focused. Understood, but isn't this basic yogic principle. I've studied the Patanjali back and forth, so this is NOT yoga. More bad: So the oriental yogi guy who does like 20 classes a day is Himmler to the owner's Hitler. This guy started out by sweating and dripping all over my mat and not even moving himself. That's my issue I suppose. The negative gets worse--this guy has SOOO much anger it's obscene. He was getting PISSED that kids were coming into class, that people were standing at the door outside and talking. He huffed and puffed and blew the door the down yelled at the kids and people outside and huffed himself back into class. Yogi? Methinks not. My wife told me that she overheard from the naked chicks in the bathroom that "what was that dude's problem? Isn't this yoga and you're supposed to leave that shit outside?" Yep. And this guy is an instructor there. Good luck with that chief. Namaste. All in all, stay away from this Bikram. People are way too serious and the fact that Hitler herself doesn't even let you breathe the way you want to makes this a stressful experience that I don't want to repeat. Three and 1/2 stars for my initiation to Bikram With an entry special of $20/1 wk unlimited for new students, I'm happy I chose Bikram Yoga Reston for my first experience with hot yoga. Armed only with knowledge from the Google machine that Bikram is a 90-minute class that consists of 26 yoga postures conducted in a room heated to 105 degrees, I bravely grabbed my mat, towel and water bottle and headed off to the studio. To anyone visiting Bikram Reston for the first time, perhaps I should mention that there is no sign outside this establishment marking it as a yoga studio and that the building is very hard to find in the dark. There is no parking in front and the back entrance is not particularly well-lit. There is a slightly off-putting smell in the studio and in the restrooms that leaves you wondering how often they are cleaned after sessions. Yes, we all sweat and there will be some lingering bouquet, but should it pervade to the front of the studio as well? The shower area is small and intimate, with the ambience lacking a bit in my estimation. For my first session, I opted to wear yoga pants and a tank top and noticed a stark contrast as everyone around me appeared nearly naked in itsy bitsy bikini bottoms and thin, skimpy-seeming bra-tops. I soon saw the benefit in such attire when I was completely drenched after the fist half hour. During the second session, I was less self conscious about wearing a bit less clothing and donned a pair of short shorts with a tank top. By the third session, I had lost all inhibition entirely and arrived in a sports bra and even shorter shorts--my "Bikram uniform" from then on. My advice to anyone trying Bikram for the first time is to go as naked as you feel comfortable. Even those bodies which were not traditionally gorgeous in an aesthetic sense appeared kinetically beautiful as they moved through the postures. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, "there is no judgment" and I think these classes can really do wonders for your self-confidence. The concept of Bikram yoga is very appealing to me. Since you do the same poses each time in the same order, you can easily see how far you've come in strength and flexibility. The stronger your body becomes, the better you will master the poses. The converse is also true-- the more you master the poses, the stronger your body will become. I found Bikram very rewarding; the 90 minute session was like sex for my brain, leaving me refreshed and rejeuvinated in the endorphin-filled afterglow, relaxed and totally at peace. Like Reggie advised, I got "all of the issues out of my tissues" and departed the studio cleansed and renewed. Of the three instructors I experienced I liked the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 8-9:30 instructors the best. Reggie and Sayyeda gave very detailed instruction, especially to the newer students. Both weren't shy to get down on the floor or engage a practitioner to demonstrate or talk through each posture. Sayyeda even offered helpful advice for modifying some of the postures for those with prior injuries. read more
