Came in on a Thursday, it was pretty quiet. Ordered the softshell crab roll and the gyutan (beef tongue). The beef tongue was overcooked and really chewy. Soft shell crab roll was really oily, and the roll fell apart too easily. It crumbled with a small pinch of my chopsticks. The rice felt like it was missing something, it was not seasoned with sushi rice seasoning or vinegar. Wish the dishes came with wasabi or ginger. It's a bit hard to find (directly across from the entrance of Chedraui grocery store), but great ambiance, feels legit, menu can be hard to read (but nothing google translate can't fix on occasion), and we couldn't rave about the food enough. Service was excellent too. We ordered California roll (not on menu, but you can order it anyways... just order with no cheese), gyoza, fried rice with bacon and shrimp, shakedon (raw salmon with rice and some avocado, seaweed), edamame, seaweed salad, and a roll that I can't remember the name but it had shrimp, tuna, spice, topped with tuna. I was a little bit concerned about the price of this place as we are coming from Vancouver where the price of a Sapporo is only about five Canadian dollars where is here you're spending C$15 but it makes sense because they are likely importing that. It is also the 600ml size. The sushi was certainly up to par their service was amazing. I didn't go for sushi after I came here because I thought it was good enough for the rest of our experience and didn't want it to compete with any other places.. only complaint was the prices. I stumbled across Hanaichi during me stay in Cancun. Reading the reviews convinced me to go eat. I debated on whether to go eat at Hiroya, the ramen restaurant, but decided to try this place. There were couple Japanese customers eating at the counter where I sat next to them. The restaurant seemed to be operated by the locals, which I think is great. The atmosphere of place is cozy. Menu may be on the pricier side, but that's understandable considering the fact that it's a Japanese restaurant. Food itself was decent. I ordered a sushi roll and small plates. The roll was similar to what you would get at a Japanese restaurant in America. Small plates were okay, nothing special. The problem I had here were the 3 chefs at the sushi bar. They would would be texting/using social media on their phones and one of them took out his wallet and was touching money. I not only think this is unprofessional to be doing this in front of a customer, but more importantly, it's extremely unsanitary. After seeing their chefs, I couldn't take another bite of the food left on my plate. It was quite a sad experience in Cancun. read more

Also, our waiter Luis was very helpful in translating certain ingredients and giving us a description of the various dishes. I can't believe I am saying this was the best meal we've had this entire trip to the Riviera Maya. Came for dinner on a Sunday night and the service was attentive and the food was delicious. Fresh nigiri, big portion sushi rolls, tasty appetizers and yummy desserts! My partner ordered 1 beer while I skipped the beverage but the waiter brought us 2 glasses so we could share it and we didn't even ask. Little things like this makes the whole dining experience special. This restaurant is located directly across from the huge Chedraui supermarket so be sure to check that place as well. They have many original rolls named after beaches or attractions in the Riviera Maya. We tried the mixed seafood handroll, fried octopus, assorted nigiri, a chac mool roll and fried ice cream to finish it off. Everything we tried was so good. The total for the both of us with tips was just under $60. Back home we would easily spend close to $100 or over for all this amount of food. We had to ask for wasabi, ginger, and extra plates. We had no problems asking for them and the staff was very friendly. The staff checked on us regularly and got us extra condiments even though the place was busy. We didn't plan on having Japanese food today, but it was a good decision to come here. The food is tasty and the staff is responsive. We have sushi regularly so we can confidently say that it is on par with the majority of sushi restaurants in the states. Went with all nigiri on my meal here. Yellowtail was the best, also tried the shake, unagi, maguro, giant clam, scallop, escolar which were all pretty standard. They take their sushi seriously here as the entire time there was one person dedicated to sharpening the knives and saw another making thin sheets of cucumber using those knives. It takes some skill to make one continuous sheet of paper thin cucumber without interruption. Chicken yakitori also good and charred. Based on comments and reviews, i thought I would give this place a try From the start, there was a language problem,I speak English and the waiter of course Spanish. Along with the rest of the staff. No one spoke English I ordered an udon bowl with tofu and asked if they could add vegetables. He said they could and would be fried. I received my bowl, with 3 BIG chunks of fried tofu , a wad of stuck together fried onions( not on the menu) and no vegetables. When I asked him about the vegetables, he said they don't have any. At this point? I just decided to pay the bill and leave Paid the entire amount with no discounts and left the food on my he table. Great spot for Japanese food in Cancun! Yes it is in a nondescript strip mall off the cheesy touristy part of the hotel zone (km 9) but well worth a visit. We started with the edamame which unfortunately was rubbery and stale but the grilled calamari was sautéed with garlic and scallions and awesome! We also tried the gyudon, karaage and gyoza - all stellar and authentic. Highlight of the evening was the langoustine sashimi which was super fresh and beautifully presented. Had a Chilean Chardonnay which paired perfectly with everything. Tiny place (at least the downstairs) - although they must have a fairly large upstairs because about halfway through the meal a group of about 25 Japanese tourists all headed upstairs - but we were seated right away without a reservation on a Wednesday night around 7:30p. It was our second visit to Hanaichi. Cold fresh air, nice atmosphere and very welcome staff. Some position in menu have no English translation, but you can ask your waiter, he speaks a bit English btw:) We ate starters, soups, rolls and deserts. It was amazing. My recommendation are Udon tempura and house roll with spicy tuna outside and regular inside and for sure you need to try delicious ice cream with coconut and plane green tea - you will love it! read more
