Located on the property of Hotel NYX on the beach. This was the best Japanese experience I've ever received! We definitely got the royal treatment. We didn't have to make reservations for dining in for sushi, but you do have to make one for hibachi. Which we did for the next night. So we are definitely returning. So.. we ordered: For my Mr. Edamame Miso shiru Sashimi Kaizoku maki Mitsumame For me: Gyoza Cameron roca Ebi tempura temaki Spicy shake maki Cheesecake de matcha All the food was on point, they were bringing each one individually and I didn't feel rushed. Love my white wine. It paired well with all of it. My favorite was the tempura shrimp, sushi, and the dessert. The sushi was one of the best I've ever had and loved my pork gyoza. My Mr loved everything he ordered. He cleaned his plate, that how he liked it. When we come back to Cancun, we will make it a point to come back here again! It's that good. Hotel NYX's restaurants are fantastic and Umami is certainly not exception. Looking for some great sushi or hibachi? This is the place. All the food was delicious, the service was awesome, and the atmosphere is very laid back. If you're going for sushi, they give you five courses from start to finish, so you're definitely not leaving still hungry. I absolutely loved this restaurant when I stayed at Hotel NYX and that is a part of the all inclusive package!!! The staff was friendly and came by one by one to take our orders and drinks. I love how we get to watch the chefs make our food right in our face, but this also means that seating is limited. However, you can't do reservations but put your name down and wait for your turn. As part of the all inclusive, we could only select one dish from the 5 categories: 1. entrees and salads 2. soup and noodles | breaded and fried 3. rice | sashimi | temaki and conos | nigiri sushi 4. maki mono and rolls | specials 5. dessert -- 1. I've tried the seaweed salad and akami salad, but the akami salad was definitely the better choice. It comes with seared tuna and thick slices of avocados and tomatoes. 2. I've tried the fried octopus, fried chicken kaarage, and miso soup. The fried octopus was tough and hard to chew. The kaarage wasn't juicy as I'd like but it was okay. The best one of this section was definitely the miso soup. It was hot and flavorful with scallions and seaweed. But I only had one tiny cube of tofu, so I wish there were more. 3. For this section, I highly recommend the spicy tuna hand roll 100%. I loved it so much that I got it two nights in a row. It is filled to the brim with the spicy tuna! 4. I had the salmon skin special (2 pc) and kani roll (8 pc). The kani roll was a glorified california roll, still delicious. 5. We had the choice between two desserts: a yuzu pastel and a clear cake. The yuzu one had an immediate flavor profile, but I preferred the mitsumami because it was not very sweet. It still had a lychee flavor, so it wasn't flavorless. The decor and service appear polished but service and execution from there fell short in a dramatically slow fashion. Food once received is average at best. The edamame was nicely salted but overcooked and veering on mushy. The miso came in a nice earthenware bowl but was lukewarm and bland. The takoyaki looked more like macarons and tasted dry and bland. They forgot to give me my nigiri and other items were missing from our party's order. Missing items happen. But we had to first flag the server about this and then follow up persistently. Then we witnessed the sushi chef insist the items had been served. When in fact disorganized food runs led to missing plates. Again, this happens. However we were at the sushi bar and the chef literally saw every item we were served and not served. Of particular note was the appearance of roaches that disappeared into the floorboards between the second and third seats of the bar (from the entrance). Then the apparent lack of refrigeration of the salad and garnish for the duration of our two hour meal. So food safety concerns were apparent and really ruined my appetite. This restaurant is within a resort with an all inclusive package. I believe the service issues here stem from that. So I would not make it a point to dine here unless you are a resort guest. read more

Some of the most delicious sushi and nigiri I've had in a long time. Had the scallop, sea bass, and salmon nigiri - all of which impressed me highly. I sometimes lean away from fish-y fish but the freshness was so apparent that none overpowered my taste buds. My favorite roll was the Umami - sweet, fresh, and a nice crunch from the cucumber. Closed out with a matcha cheesecake - a nice light flavor with great texture. One thing to keep in mind - reservations are often needed. You can make them on open table! And Umami is located behind NYX Cancun hotel. There is free parking available below the hotel (just drive up and ask the concierge) then walk through the building, out back, and to the left of the pool. read more

We stayed at the NYX hotel where this is offered as part of the package. The hotel makes it seem hard to get a reservation for the hibachi, but we arrived to only 9 guests for the hibachi and 20 available hibachi seats. We were shuffled to their outside deck then seated at the large rectangular area where 2 hibachi chefs cook back to back from one another. We were not able to pick where we wanted sit which was disappointing as we came a few minutes early in order to face the sea view. We were brought small "mixology" menus that offered about 10 fruity type drinks. Beware, in small print at the bottom is a price of 285 pesos per, so not included. While they assured us it they were worth it, everyone at the hibachi tables ordered the included house wine or corona beer. We have been to many( my husband would say too many) hibachi shows in Mexico especially in our 10 trips in the past 5 years. The vibe here was completely different. There are at least 10 employees just standing around watching. While I determined they are watching the chefs ( reason to follow) it just feels like they are glaring at you the whole time. They gave us the protein menu and took our choice without giving us even a minute to read it. It looked like there were about 8 listed, some likely not included. I ordered the first one on the list which was catch of the day (mahi mahi). My husband just blurted out chicken as they did not give the men menus, figuring chicken was a good guess lol. The chefs come to begin the routine and they work with their backs facing about 5 feet apart. One chef is about a few minutes ahead in his routine. It was obvious to me this was a teaching or exam situation for our less experienced chef. As my position at the table let me see both, I know exactly what was coming and how it was supposed to look. Our chef clattered around and tried to make jokes and toss things in the air but failed at many and constantly joked he had too much tequila. I really felt sorry for him with all the other staff staring him down. He served us the fried rice which was pretty tasteless. One of the starers offered us yum yum sauce for it when we were halfway done. Then began the protein show. There were a couple steaks, a squid, the chicken breast, and my mahi mahi which was obviously caught months prior and frozen. He kept trying to stand it up on its side to no avail. During this time he moved some grease with his spatula and the hot substance flew and hit the left side of my face and shoulder. He apologized profusely and I didn't notice anything that night but did wake up the next morning with what looked like a red splotch on my left cheek. The standard vegetables were cooked, though not enough. We were given the rest of our meals and he did his usual bow and left. I attempted to eat the fish but it tasted weird in a chemical way, like formaldehyde? The worst part was when they took my plate away they grilled me about why I didn't eat it. I tried to be nice and say I was just full while they offered to get me to have a sushi roll instead. Then they actually sent the chef out to quiz me about what was wrong with my meal. Talk about embarrassing and inappropriate!!! At this point they come around with a giant QR code with all of the staffs names written on it so you can write a review on the spot. We declined. We've never had an experience like this in any resort nor did we see anyone from offsite dining here. I know it's just my opinion, but I think this is a school masquerading as a restaurant with one experienced chef teaching another. I wouldn't step in this place again if you paid me and I would warn others to be suspicious of any good reviews you find. read more

The ambiance was really nice and the chefs do a great job with the hibachi grill but they don't try and throw any food. Service was horrible. I had to ask multiple times for water. Read awesome reviews about Umami restaurant, located in NYX Hotel, an all inclusive resto open to public. The resto is indoor dining only so I ordered takeout, watched how quickly the place filled up and sipped a delish mai tai while waiting (90 pesos). The staff (Ivonne, Victor, Nadia & Anayelli) couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. The fish in the sushi is very high quality...and cheap. I had a fantastic spicy salmon hand roll, spicy tuna maki roll (thanks to the previous helper) and the cobia fish of the day sashimi (150 pesos for 5 beautiful large cuts of sashimi) which was scrumptious with the jalapeño chili soy sauce that they packed for me. The seaweed salad was good and the fried rice very salty. There is a hibachi grill which people seated around it seemed to enjoy the entertainment of the chef. The staff was masked but patrons are seated rather close to one another at the hibachi and sushi counter. There was a smaller room with less people seated. I personally enjoyed the wonderful food here, but only for takeout. Here is my hesitation to recommend this for both travel to the restaurant and for dining in person here during a pandemic. I entered from the beach side, passing by the Magic Bar to the restaurant entrance, this outside tiki bar was random drunk maskless people having random drunk convos all over one another. The resto is indoor service only so I sat at the counter double-masked and ordered takeout, watched how quickly the place filled up and sipped a mai tai while waiting (90 pesos). Exited through the hotel...only staff is masked up, 80% of the guests traipsing around were unmasked. As I walked out, there were a group of boys carrying a nearly lifeless kid up the ramp, all of them were hammered. The lobby stunk of some perfume aroma, hopefully that will disinfect the virus that is surely running rampant there. If I owned this fabulous restaurant, I'd offer a separate entrance path from the hotel or allow curbside pickup of food outside of the hotel and post the menu online so that takeout orders can be easily placed. read more

This is my first time to Cancún, Mexico and we were able to go and have a great experience at Umami! I had a party of 5 (2 of them were kids: 6 years old and 2 year old). They were so accommodating, entertaining the kids while cooking, and just a great time. Our cook, Mario, was simply amazing! Our servers were very observant and catered to needs that we didn't know we needed... I have been to other types of restaurants but this one takes it! So delicious we ate there twice! For starters we had a octopus with cucumber . Super fresh and the flavors delicate and perfectly balanced. Then we had some chicken that was so delicious and tender and flavorful. Then I had a bowl of some sort of sushi rice with catch of the day that's was red snapper as well as several other fish. All perfectly sliced and so fresh. Service was friendly. Our waitress Chutima suggested a sushi rolll that they are famous for, but I was too full so we came the next to have that along with the salad again and more sashimi. this restaurant was definitely a highlight of our trip and definitely the best meal of the whole trip! we got to dine there 2 nights in a row- one night we had a 4 course sushi meal and the next night we got to experience the show and have the other japanese cuisine and I can't decide which one was better! the staff were so helpful and deserve all the praise for helping us order the most delicious courses. i'll definitely be craving sushi for weeks because of how great this place is :) 10/10 a must! read more
