Centrally located in old-town Bern, Le Mazot is a great stop for tourists who want a typical Swiss meal. Came here around 5 PM on a Saturday. Almost every table was taken outdoors, but I managed to squeeze in. While there is indoor seating, its slightly dark and smelly inside (due to the cheese being cooked!), so do what the Europeans do and enjoy the outdoors! For food, I opted to try the Rosti florentine (rosti with spinach) and the small portion of the raclette. The raclette came out first and was so yummy. I mean, who doesn't like a plate of melted cheese with potatoes and pickles?! When a dish is mainly cheese, the quality of the cheese is paramount. I'm happy to report that the cheese Le Mazot uses is top-notch. Beware, even if you order the small portion of the raclette, it might as well be a meal within itself. Because by the time I got my rosti, I was stuffed! The rosti was pretty tasty and I was glad to have gotten it with spinach, as otherwise it's pretty dense with the shredded potatoes as a base. It was a nice dish to try, but if I only had to order one, I'd opt for the raclette. Service was good and the food was brought out at a nice pace. Le Mazot is a solid choice to get some Swiss staples without having to search too far. read more

RAT + BAD SERVICE - my first time leaving a comment because food was nothing special but the woman waiter had a really bad attitude. We came into the restaurant around 9 pm and we were asked to be seated in the very end corner. I asked if we can move to the middle section but she declined without giving a reason and instead gave us a discriminating look. During our order the waiter kept deciding for us saying that we won't be able to finish our food when we ordered what we thought was reasonable. Basically the whole atmosphere made us felt uncomfortable. By the end of our meal which is around 10pm they started to clean up the restaurant, taking the trash bags out while the restaurant claims to close around 11:30pm and we saw a rat running around while we were eating. This is really unprofessional and kills the mood. Not recommended. read more

When you are in Switzerland, you need to try Rösti, and we decided to have Rösti as our first meal in Bern. The restaurant is located in the Bear Plaza, it looks small from the front, but there are plenty tables. We ordered the Rösti Forestier and Rösti Beronis, both are delicious (although I'm no Rösti expert) The service is fast and efficient. A good place for lunch or dinner read more

After a fun filled day of cheese and chocolates, we headed to Bern to get rösti for dinner. The place we stopped by initially was just way too expensive (Altestramdepot) and also didn't have rösti. We then meandered the streets of Bern at night. I must say, it is a pretty sight at night. Probably one of the prettiest we saw during the night time. There was one main street which adorn in lights and stores where there was a river or water way running through the center. The stores were closed, but there were cellar doors on street level which made me believe if you were a little more curious than us, you'd see that some places were open (ie bars, cafes, or restaurants). All the menus for restaurants were so pricey (ranging from 19-60 CHF). We thought we'd have to eat McDonalds, until we saw the Bundesplatz and headed toward it. We then saw this place in an alleyway to the building and what do you know! A whole rösti menu and at reasonable prices (all under 15 CHF). The place was very warm both temperature and ambiance though the staff wasn't so much. It was a nice escape from the coldness outside. We ordered a rösti with raw ham, tomatoes, cheese and oregano as well as a portion of raclette which came with potatoes and onions. It was so good. I think the cheese on the rösti was raclette, but who cares! They both hit the spot. We washed it down with tea as beer probably wouldn't have been the best thing to drink (both of us were dehydrated and also needed to survive the drive back to Geneva). It was weird to hear German as opposed to French as that has been what I was hearing all this time. Also on the drive up the exits started saying Ausfahrt and of course I chuckled. Overall the place was great. The prices were super reasonable and the food hit the spot. If you like beer, potatoes, and cheese, you're at the right place and also in the heart of Bern! read more

Of all the restaurants at the "Front", this one is probably one of the more affordable ones. I absolutely love Raclette and Raclette cheese. But I opted to get the Rösti with raclette and onions. This sure did not disappoint. Even my picky boyfriend really liked my choice of food and I was delighted to find, he really likes Raclette cheese. The waiter was a bit on the serious side, but I got a smile out of him when I mentioned we "didn't like the food at all", when he picked up all the empty plates. After all, we were five people. The food was excellent, and my daughter kept bugging me to go back there. I know we will, hopefully sooner than later. read more

What a surprise - I had my most memorable meal in Swtizerland! The rösti was perfect, covered with melted cheese and a hint of freshly cracked pepper. I tasted some of my friend's rösti with sausage in onion sauce - delicious! There was a farmer's market in the square, and lots of street vendors, the clock tower is immediately outside. I looked for such a place in Luzern and Interlaken (didn't even bother to try in Geneva), and I have been disappointed. read more

This spot was recommended, however, far from top notch. It seemed like we surprised them when we showed up? Service was ok. Raclette was very good! Mushroom fondue was very watered down and not as thick as expected. While I would say that it was not a bad spot to eat, I would not recommend as a "go to" spot to try. This was the restaurant where I have eaten the worst Fondue I do not know how it is possible to dilute the cheese, it was a pure cheese water and therefore with a very bad taste and super expensive, the Raclette was fine but its price too expensive for what Served and I know Switzerland is an expensive place compared to other countries but, I ate at cheaper and very good restaurants! read more

I rarely rate a place with one star, but this one truly deserves a critical rating, as both the food, as well as the service were horrid. We ordered a blue cheese "Rösti" (Swiss hash brown) and a cheese fondue. The cheese founde was not great, you could tell it wasn't cooked fresh. The rösti however was the biggest disappointment. The rösti was swimming in this cheesy cream- substance and the potatoes were not crispy on the top and not fully cooked. We complained and the waiter gave us attitude, telling us we didn't really 'know' the dish. They told us that is how Swiss food is made, which is not true, there are plenty other good places in Bern that serve better Swiss food. The manager refused to speak to us and fully charged us for the dish even though we did not eat it. This place is a tourist trap, expensive and inauthentic. also known as the walliserstübli. it's a cozy place with outside space. the food is pretty cheap and you get a lot. the rösti is quite good, the salad pretty fresh during primetime and the wine are local to wallis. all in all a nice place to take visitors to. read more
