It's been close to 6months that I've now been in Amsterdam and in all that time, kept hoping for an opportunity to check out an Indo rice-table experience (which is to the Dutch, the equivalent of what curry is to the British).
Finally a work colleague was visiting from Memphis and was keen to try out local cuisine, so decided to come to Restaurant Jun, which I'd been wanting to check out and bonus - it was located an easy 15 min walk from my house.
Our amuse bouché was fried rice crackers with two types of sambal - One which was mild and the other one was extremely spicy, but held the hunger at bay while waiting for our main course to arrive.
We decided to order the Rice Table 2 (€ 37 p.p) and for drinks, I got the Ice Tea a la Jun, which was decent but nothing really with any oomph or remarkable.
RICE TABLE 1 dishes
1) SOTO AYAM (Aromatic chicken soup with kaffir lime leaves, lemon grass and ginger)- Basically with the starter, you had a choice of either this soup, which is what I chose, or a beef salad, which a co-diner got instead and said was very good. It was also more substantially plated than the soup (just saying, if you are more into quantity ratio).
2) RENDANG (Beef tenderloin in a Sumatran curry with cumin, turmeric leaves, lemon grass & galangal) - I don't eat beef so no idea how this tasted but my co-diners scarfed the dish down.
3) AYAM BAKAR PADANG (Chicken in a light red sauce from Padang with cumin, cinnamon & clove) - you know what? I'm writing this review a week later from dining in, and I honestly can't recall what the taste of this dish was like?!? Did we even get this dish? I am not sure??
4) SATÉ AYAM (Chicken satay with peanut sauce) - Got one skewer per person for this dish. The chicken was tender but the peanut sauce taste was underwhelming for my palate. I think a pinch of salt was missing - too sweet!
5) URAPAN (Lukewarm vegetables with grated coconut, shrimp paste, red pepper & kaffir lime leaves) - One of my top fave dishes for the meal! The grated coconut +!kefir lime combo with the veggies was uber delicious. Would absolutely recommend this dish.
6) ACAR CAMPUR (Fresh pickled vegetables) - consider this more like a version of salad. The pickling flavors were spot-on!
7) NASI PUTIH (White jasmine rice) - fluffy and well cooked - we were given a generous serving and the staff kept coming back to check we had enough.
RICE TABLE 2 dishes:
1) SAMBAL UDANG PALEMBANG (Shrimp in a red sauce with salam leaves and lemon grass) - Another of my fave dishes of the night! Generous amount of shrimp and fabulous curry taste. I'd get this again, but might swap out the shrimp for vegetables instead.
2) IKAN WOKU-WOKU (Seabass fillet in an orange sauce from Menado with basil) - Good Taste! I was afraid the orange sauce would be too sweet, but it wasn't and I really enjoyed how the curry basil taste shown thru more.
3) SATE KAMBING (Lamb satay with sweet soy sauce and red onion) - I liked how tender the lamb was, but didn't like the taste of the sauce. I think it was a tamarind sauce but the usual tart taste of that was extremely subdued and all I could taste was sweet.
We also decided to splurge and get dessert, a dish called " Bubur Campor." This was tapioca pearls with coconut cream and black sticky rice porridge sweetened with Javanese sugar and pandan leaves. I thought the tapioca pearls tasted excellent but the black sticky rice was a bit tough and I didn't enjoy the taste that much of this specific component of this dish.
Overall, this was a decent Indo place - the courteous and friendly staff were a highlight, but for me, the food really wasn't to my palate. I had a fun time out, but not in any massive rush to come back.
