One of the most intriguing meals I kept seeing for years before I visited Amsterdam was the Rijsttafel and knew I had to get it. I went with 6 other friends on this trip and talked it up for days. Some were apprehensive since it's out of their comfort zone but I'm happy to report this was almost everyone's favorite meal throughout Europe! We decided on the Rijsttafel Special which was 15 courses laid out in order from mild to spicy, perfect since there were some who don't do heat. There was a mix of different vegetable, fish and meat also perfect for the non meat eaters. The flavors of everything was so insanely good but my favorite was the Babi Kecap, pork braised in soy with cinnamon and star anise. Great service and food. A nice open dining area with lots of space in the middle of Leidseplein. You need to walk up the stairs, so not very handicapped accessible. I fist went here in 2009 while on a work trip. It was also featured on a Rick Steve's Europe episode one time! It's a great choice if you didn't plan on anything, need a warm table, away from the crowds in the center of Amsterdam. Pleasantly surprised with this one especially in Amsterdam. Never had Indonesian food before and this was a treat! I loved the way they laid out all the dishes in the order of level of spiciness on a heated silver platform. Although they said the beef was the spiciest, nothing to us Californians was that spicy. I concur with many of the other Yelp reviews on this place. While you can order ala carte, almost all the diners chose one of the rijsttafel offerings from the menu. What's that? Basically, there are about four offerings with each one offering more variety and spice for additional costs. They set up your table and lay out all the dishes according to heat (mild to spicy), and then you eat family style. Think of it as a buffet that you remain seated and get the picture (except no seconds). The food was delicious and true to Indonesian seasonings (I thought it could be more spicy. Ask for their housemade pepper paste. That will help lighting your tastebuds). The staff were exceptional in their attention to their patrons and cuisine--made all the difference. The food and service here were great! We tried to walk in on a Saturday and they couldn't take reservations until Monday, so that was a good sign. Definitely make a reservation before coming. Great restaurant in the Leidseplein area, which is hard to find. Don't be fooled as you are walking around looking for a restaurant, any place that tries to lure you in from the street is most likely a tourist trap - don't bother! When you arrive at Puri Mas you walk through a doorway and up a steep staircase. We tried to walk-in for dinner without a reservation 2xs and they couldn't seat a table for 2 without a reservation. On the second night of being politely turned away, we made a reservation for later in the week - yay! The ambiance is lacking but Puri Mas makes up for it in service and food! The staff is dressed is presumably typical garb and everyone was super friendly. Never had Indonesian food before so where better to try it than...Amsterdam. The restaurant is large by European standards and has a large amount of seating. The staff is really friendly and they go out of their way to help provide suggestions and educate you on the food available. Dishes were quite good and they even put the dishes on warming plates on the table to keep all the food warm throughout the whole meal. While a large portion of Indonesian food is spicy, there are also items that aren't - so wimps like me can enjoy it without suffering or sweating off 10lbs. Low stars because this place is very overpriced. We got the set menu for 2 (the 3rd most expensive option) came out to 90 euro for 2. The satay was good (except the shrimp one was bland). The rice was good and the salads were good, but nothing special here. The food was good, but just not worth 90 euro. If you want to eat nice and spend 45 euro per person do not come here. Gluten free Indonesian food!! We tried the rijsttafel here and it was fantastic. Everything was so flavorful and authentic. Except that it wasn't the Indonesian spicy level, but I totally understand that because of the audience they cater. You can ask for the sambal that comes with the keropok, it's real spicy and adds a good kick to any of the dishes. The service was amazing too, I'm celiac and they were able to accommodate, they made sure it was gluten free and gave me a heads up on which dish has cross contamination, mostly fried stuff like the banana fritters, potato crips. Wow. Absolutely wonderful experience this evening! I did some yelping before our trip on quite a few Indonesian restaurants in the area, hoping to avoid tourist traps and mediocre food. We ended up here because my father in law's company had dined here a few days earlier and so.. we figured it had to be good- and it was! All three of us got the Rijsttafel Puri Mas; two of us did the vegetarian with fish option, and one did the regular. This was great bc the meat and fish options were more than enough to share so everyone could sample everything. Every single dish was different and very flavorful. Perfect temperatures and spice levels (only a few dishes were spicy). The staff was so incredibly warm and welcoming; even more, they were attentive the entire meal- a rarity in Europe! I would absolutely recommend Puri Mas if you're looking for a great rijsttafel experience, just good Indonesian food (they have an a la carte menu too), or just a decent meal in general. Now I must tell you that I am in love with anything eastern and spicy. We had eaten in a rijsttafel once in Dutch Curacao and had been yearning for a repeat. Of course the Indonesian cuisine comes from long occupation of Indonesia by the Dutch. Rijsttafel, literally "rice table", is great for one who can't decide on a menu selection as this one had no less than 12 offerings. We had it "for 2" and they customize dishes to make them extra spicy for me and bland for Lisa. If you do go, look carefully as it has a small sign and is on the second floor in the Museum District. The wait was so long when we attempted to eat here, so we made a reservation for the following night. We were glad we did, because other patrons ending up doing the same when we were there the next evening. I can tell you why it's always filled up - the food and service are incredible! My group went with 1 meat and 2 vegetarian/fish rice tables. It was everyone's first time having Indonesian food and we were all delighted. We were able to sample so many different dishes and everything was delicious. My favorite was the spicy curry beef over fried rice. We couldn't get over how great the spread was and how long they let us linger after dinner. No elevator. After the climb, we settled in for a nice quiet table in the corner. The staff was very friendly, and willing to explain the whole "Rijsttafel" process, and choices. Rijstaafel ! It's a set menu, about €22, but it's absolutely the way to go if you want a taste of everything. Got here on the recommendation of my girlfriend's mother, who is Indonesian (dutch gentry) and claimed it's the most legit. Too much coconut for my taste, but some dishes were absolutely fabulous. Authentic and properly prepared, tender, and quite the value considering how much food comes with the rijstaafel "set plate" experience. Service was quick and friendly. The sambal [sambel] was of olek variety, West Java, but homemade and not what i expected. I'm a baadjak guy (notice my avatar: extra heet!) but this was super yummy if you love the pain. And be warned: in this sambal there is pain. Delicious pain! So enjoy but start slow... There's a lot of sauce and toppings, Indonesian beer, and a short reasonable wine list. It's a busy place with true Dutch loyals that swear by the place. An example of colonial aftermath that went right. There are many options in town for Rijstaffel, and based on our location, Puri Mas was one of the most highly recommended choices. It was easy to get to and we were quickly accommodated by very gracious and friendly hosts. I must say that the pictures provided by other travelers illustrate the quality and presentation of the food exactly as what you'll receive...they look almost identical in color and amount, etc. So, Puri Mas definitely offers a "consistent" experience, though this left the impression of it being a more mass-produced dining occasion unfortunately. We ordered the "Rijstaffel PURI MAS" option (includes a nice curry soup) and made a minor modification due to Shrimp allergies. The accommodated that need nicely, and provided an alternate dish. This was the best restaurant we visited on our trip to amsterdam, and honestly one of my personal favorite restaurant experiences ever. All the food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the vegan version of the rice table, which didn't at all feel like a replacement for the "real" one, but a varied meal with a lot of thought and effort put into it. That doesn't happen very often. I got some of the best tofu, eggplant and tempeh I've ever tried. The staff were super nice and the atmosphere was lovely and relaxed. I loved everything about this place. So if you're vegan or vegetarian - try this place. If you're not - still try this place. Actually, if you're in amsterdam at all you should try this place. Love to the max! My dad is from Indonesia, so I know Indonesian cuisine well. The beef rendang was spicy and tender. Nasi goreng and the white rice were very flavorful.
