Thank you to my friend, Keandra, who recommended this beautiful restaurant for a Rijsttafel, known as a rice table. Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of flavors, colors, degrees of spiciness and textures. The dishes may be crispy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard or velvety. Such a beautiful display. A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Ordered both the large and small Tujuh Maret's rice table. The larger rijsttafel includes all the specialties of the chef, composed of 18 different dishes. The smaller rice table can be ordered as mild-medium or medium spicy including chicken and tofu satay, yellow rice, jasmine rice, sweet and sour salads and prawn or rice crackers. Chicken dishes included (from least to most spicy): Ajam Opor-Chicken in a mild sauce of coconut and kurkuma. Ajam Roedjak-Chicken in a spicy sauce of red peppers and coconut. Ajam Rica Rica-Chicken in a spicy sauce of assorted peppers. Beef dishes included (from least to most spicy): Daging Smoor-Beef in a mild soy sauce and nutmeg Daging Rendang-Beef in a spicy sauce of various peppers and coconut Daging Belado-Beef in a spicy sauce of red peppers and tomatoes. Satay dishes included: Sate Ajam- Chicken satay with peanut sauce. Sate Tahu- Tofu satay with peanut sauce. Side dishes included: Gado Gado-Mixed vegetables with peanut butter sauce. Sambal Goreng Telor-Boiled egg with spicy sauce. Atjar Kuning Menado-Sweet and sour salad. Krupuk-Prawn crackers. Emping-Vegetarian crackers. Seroendeng-Grated coconut with peanuts. Nasi Putih-Steamed Jasmine rice. Nasi Kuning-Yellow rice with coconut and lemongrass. Although everything was delicious, it was definitely hard to remember what was what, even after our hostess was graciously described each of the 30 dishes that were on our rice tables. Labels would have helped. Finished with a Pandan crepe filled with coconut. A beautiful way to end a really nice evening in Amsterdam. read more

Delicious meal in AMS. According to Google, rice table, or rijsttafel, is a traditional meal that combines dishes from different Indonesian food cultures and is served with rice. The Dutch adapted the dish during their colonization of Indonesia (1602-1942), basing it on the Indonesian feast nasi padang from West Sumatra. The word rijsttafel is Dutch and translates to "rice table". I was only visiting this beautiful city for a short time. My friend made a resy for us to enjoy a quaint and yummy meal at one of her go-to spots in the area. If you decide to forgo a resy and just walk in, you may have to wait, as there's very limited seating. We walked here and it was easy stroll, enjoying all the little shops & scenery along the way. When you walk in your greeted by a yummy smell of spices. It's definitely a family business. Tiny euro style restaurant. Food - we ordered the Rice table for 2. And bring your stomach space, because it's alot of food. We came hungry and still had leftovers. It's a progressive meal, from mild to spicy dishes. But I believe you can chose your level of spice with the server. 18 dishes come out all at once. Consisting of fish, chicken, beef, veg etc dishes plus rice. All with unique flavor and textures. Would highly suggest it if in the area. Even if it's not in your wheelhouse foodwise, still an interesting experience. read more

My opinion is slightly biased due to my food allergies, but I still thought that this was a decent spot. I had heard so many things about the famous rice table, and when visiting Amsterdam it was on my list of top things to try. We made a reservation ahead of time which I would highly recommend doing since it was quite packed when we got there. Even our reserved table was literally right next to another pair which was slightly uncomfortable. We were going to order the rice table but upon informing our server of my nut allergy he mentioned that almost half the dishes would have them. The only option for me was to order the super spicy dishes - I do enjoy spicy food, so I figured I would give them a try anyways. I got the combo plate with the spicy curry chicken and spicy beef, which came with a green bean dish and coconut rice instead of the satay (since that has peanut too). The plate was presented beautifully! The coconut rice was unfortunately not what I expected, which was more of the sweet malaysian or burmese style - this was more dry and less coconutty. The chicken was fine but there wasn't too much flavor and it was a touch dry. I did really enjoy the beef - it was very tender, and the sauce despite being super spicy was really good. I also liked the vegetable sides that came with it. Overall, it was not a bad experience by any means, just a little uncomfortable. I'm still glad to have tried this spot though, and am very appreciative of them for helping me choose items that would cater to my allergies. read more

As a party of 2, we were seated without a reservation on a Sunday evening, but it seems like it would be best to make a reservation. Server was friendly. Food - Got the Rijsttafel Minahasa (€38,50 per person). They put the dishes on warmers, so that was a nice touch. - The chicken skewers were good. However, the other 3 chicken dishes were kind of bland and tasted really similar to one another. - 1/3 of the beef dishes was flavorful, but the other two were a bit dry and flavorless. - The dish with the hard boiled egg was way too salty. - The yellow rice was fragrant. Jasmine rice tasted fine. - Didn't care for the prawn chips. Tasted like they were fried in used/not fresh oil. - There was a soy based dish that tasted ok but not excited about it. - The 3 cooked vegetable dishes were pretty good. The 4th vegetable dish was a peanut based salad with cabbage and cucumber. The 5th vegetable dish, the salad, was tangy and a good contrast to the others. - Not sure why coconut crumb topping counts as a dish. I had the tofu Satay. This was very tasty and hit the spot. As a vegetarian, I felt this was the best option outside of the rice bowl tasting menu with 12 vegetarian dishes. Excellent job cooking the tofu and although I thought the peanut sauce was quite heavily applied it was still fresh tasting and fulfilled my appetite. Service was excellent with everyone doing their best to take care of us. It was clearly a "local spot" not a tourist spot with mostly other locals there, but I think is worth checking out read more

Our new friend from Ohio recommended Rijsttafel, which is Indonesian Rice Tables, only common in Amsterdam. We checked the website - reservations required - and we picked our time. It seemed a bit early, but this was one of our wonderful new gastronomic finds in Amsterdam, and it takes a while to enjoy all of the plates! This small place is packed for the best reason - GREAT FOOD with good service!! The WC has a steep, spiral staircase that is quite the adventure too! Three Rijsttafel / rice table choices are available - Large, Small and Vegetarian. Being only two of us, we chose the small rice table. Twelve delicious dishes were served, and each contained a generous portion for two. Beef dishes, chicken satay and a yummy tofu - veggie dish, plus veggies on their own - a sassy green bean and potato dish plus crunchy soy bean dish with an outstanding flavor, yummy prawn chips, a slightly sweet salad, "sour" pickles with a perfect crunch, fluffy white rice and lightly flavored coconut rice were served that evening. Heat level can be ordered too! The meat was tender and juicy, and seasoned to perfection. The veggies were fresh and yummy, as each dish was seasoned perfectly - and all added just the right components to make this rice table absolutely delicious! Dessert was calling and Pandam cake was the answer! This was a gorgeous, green cake with so many layers we couldn't count them all. Each layer was "European sweet" - the light coconut flavor of pandam was not overpowered with the usual "American sugar high", A tasty pandam ice cream accompanied the cake, along with a huge dollop of rich whipped cream. A strawberry compliments the beautiful green array as well. It was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s, and the perfect conclusion to a fabulous Indonesian Rijsttafel feast! read more

We were in Amsterdam for only 22 hours and really wanted to make sure Indonesian food was on our list of places to try. We found this place via a Nat Geo book of top restaurants to try and booked a late reservation about a week prior to our trip. It did not disappoint! It's small inside but you were seated quickly with a reservation. We immediately wanted to try a bit of everything so went with the Rijsttafel small (12 dishes). I only got a picture of half of the dishes but it was phenomenal! The flavors were unique and fragrant. We only got mild spice, but you could definitely increase the spice level if you want! Amsterdam is an entry city and has benefitted from waves of immigration, making this tiny and densely populated city enjoyable. The Netherlands controlled Indonesia for centuries, and its cuisine is one of the most interesting combinations of Indian, Malay, native Indonesian, and Dutch influences. There are many Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. Many food bloggers put Tujah Maret on the list of places to go. Located outside Central, we took a short tram to a very narrow street of quaint historical buildings. The restaurant is narrow, and you could easily miss it if not for the line of people waiting to get in. The interior is golden, with lighting to match. We were elbow-to-elbow with other guests. We ordered Satay and then got the Rijsttafel Small and the Vegetarian version for four people. The server, who said she was first and foremost an artist, was uneven but fun to interact with. The owner also pitched in to serve. The cuisine was well crafted, and the taste profiles were excellent. The communal eating of the Rijsttafel got everyone involved and discussed the different elements. Overall, I would highly recommend this gem of a place. It may not be in Central, but taking a tram is worth having a memorable meal. read more

We wanted to try their signature menu, it was okay. The food came out with candles lighting the bottom to keep it warm but the set had 4 chicken dishes and the flavors across the board tasted all kind of similar to each other and some reminded me of Thai flavors and not Indonesian. We got the 18 course rice table. 6 of the 18 were a variation of chicken dishes, 3 were filler dishes( (2 types of crackers and 1 coconut bread crumbs). Only one meat dish and NO SEAFOOD!!On top of it all the dishes lacked flavor. Would not recommend. It's completely not worth it and they are getting away with the bare minimum dishes. Tujuh Maret is an Indonesian restaurant located in the Southern Canal Ring in Amsterdam. Apparently, you can find a more upscale version, Tempo Doeloe, next door. My friend and I took a chance and opted for choosing this restaurant based on our lonely planet guide suggestions for restaurants in the area. I am always up for trying new cuisines and such but this turned out to be just okay. The food, as another reviewer mentioned, was pretty bland. I would opt for somewhere else if you are in the area. If you do fancy a try, mains are 7-10 euros and rijsttafel, an Indonesian banquet, (vegetarian and non-vegetarian; see photos) are 22-27 euros. So... I was craving thai food and I no longer had 3G to check Yelp for people's review,wish I had.. Where to begin.. The service is simply terrible: i was seated at a dirty table, and it took them 5 mns to take out the plates and 10 mns to actually clean it up. I asked for water three times and didn't get anything. The food was okay, I guess, definitely over priced for what you get (quality, not quantity). But still edible, I wouldn't say it was bad, I enjoyed it but it wasn't great! Very delicious Indonesian food that is right next to another upscale Indonesian restaurant-- however, this is a little more friendly on the wallet and extremely accommodating to food allergies. I am allergic to crustaceans and unfortunately Indonesian food sometimes uses a shrimp based sambal. However, the restaurant was able to adapt their rijstafel for me and my partner and I ate a delicious meal together. The portions are tiny but they do end up filling you up fairly quickly. They separate their dishes between mild, medium and spicy. Indonesian spicy is a lingering, burning heat that stays in your mouth and throat-- unlike some other spices. I'd recommend getting some juice to cut the spice if you're not into it. Service was friendly and we enjoyed our meal here! THe sate was super delicious and mild-medium spice level, which is different than many of the Dutch eetcafes that May make it extremely mild. I'd recommend coming here if you can't get a spot next door. Even if you could, try both! read more

Sat right by the front window which made for great people watching as we enjoyed our meal. It was relatively quiet coming for dinner before 7, but filled up quickly for a Thursday night. The server was great at explaining everything to us as we have never had Indonesian cuisine. We had their meal for 2 which plated nearly 21 different types of authentic dishes full of flavor. These came as 6 dishes mild, 6 medium, and 6 fire spice level, with 8 accompanying sides like rices and salad garnishes. All very tasty, but half of us couldn't manage half the fire spice level dishes! The place is very small, so call ahead for a reservation if you can. read more
