Ready to dig in!

What a great experience at Aneka Rasa with authentic Indonesian food, great service and nice atmosphere!! This was an absolute highlight of our trip to Amsterdam for sure!! This was our last day in Amsterdam and we definitely wanted to try Indonesian food. We were in the central station area after having visited the Van Gogh Rembrandt experience over at the Noorderkerk church. We found this on Yelp (yay!) and made our way over and luckily we're able to get a table immediately! Jerry was very friendly and asked our names and explained the menu to us. Essentially they have the sampler menu with or without meat and they also have an a la carte menu. We chose the sampler with meat. I really liked the decor - the far wall has a beautiful mural painted on it and the plants and foliage inside make it feel like an outdoor setting. Lots of light too! The food came out pretty quickly and as you can see in the photos there was a large variety of meat (chicken, beef) and vegetable dishes. Also came with a side of white and fried rice. I really enjoyed the curry chicken dish and the vegetable dishes and the boiled egg. Very flavorful with different flavors and sauces. The spice level was very mild although the boiled egg had a slightly spicy sauce which complimented it nicely. Really great meal! And the portions were just right and we were both full and happy after the meal. The restaurant is in a great central location with lots of people walking around. We're glad we found this place - definitely recommend!!

Rijsstafel

We've never tasted Indonesian food before although living in the New York City area. When we visited Amsterdam it was on our wish/ to do list. Could not find seating on a Saturday evening. So we went 2 days later. Very friendly owner. V personal n addresses u by ur name. Not sure how he remembers all the names n am amazed. Clean restaurant just a few mins from Amsterdam Centraal. We got the rijsstrafel - rice table with so many dishes. Tasted so good. Generous portion and more than enough for 2. Was a variety of meats, vegetable n rice. We thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the meal. Thank you for a great dinner. Will be back again if n when we visit Amsterdam next

Good location near town center on a very touristy and happening shopping street. Indoor ambience is good, spacious and clean. Jerry is the friendly owner and greeted us immediately. Ordering is at the center table where Jerry laid out some menus and explained a couple of the dishes, he then takes your order and points to a table for you to sit. He makes the point of asking everyone's first name and then addresses you by first name throughout the evening. We came in around 4:30 in the evening and the restaurant gradually filled up. He managed to remember everyone's name. Now the food. It is ok, not the best or most authentic but decent enough. presentation is good. I'd say the price is a bit high if it was based on food quality only, but for the overall atmosphere and location it's about right.

Vegetarian sampler menu

Delicious food, generous portions, great veg (vegan?) options, good prices. Easy and casual atmosphere. The white wine was good.

MIE GORENG TEK TEK (13.50 Euros)

I found this place on Google Maps. I checked the ratings both on Google Maps and Yelp, and both had good ratings so we decided to have dinner here one evening. The owner was very welcoming and provided good service. He also took the time to know and remember our names. We had to order in the front before being seated. I ordered the "Mie Goreng Tek Tek" which is the fried noodles with chicken and fried egg. My BF got the "Rendang Padang" which is beef marinated in coriander spice. We really enjoyed our food but we were still slightly hungry after our meal. We could have ordered another appetizer or dessert, but we decided to get sweets somewhere else afterwards. Overall, we had a good experience here and would return again one day.

Sampler for two

Went here last night: super tasty and cozy. Had the sampler / combination for two. Highly recommend it. Owner was super attentive. Lovely room to sit, chat, enjoy a drink and have dinner. Chicken satay was one of the best I've had. Also, the beef cooked with tamarind and garlic was amazing. Perfect pairing of the sampler with some cold Bintang beers.

Thank you Jerry! You were fantastic. The food was delicious and the perfect stop for the end of the day. My first time with Indonesian food and many of the dishes seemed to hail from familiar others...like Phillipino chicken adobo, Thai chicken satay and yellow curry... The corriander beef was great and the egg too.

The restaurant offers a varied menu inspired by classic Indonesian dishes and promotes a relaxed welcoming atmosphere with the option to request specific dishes in advance including lobster or seafood with prior notice. We were seated without a reservation which was convenient and appreciated. The service was a bit grumpy and not the warmest but still attentive and functional throughout the meal. While the hospitality did not fully match the restaurant's stated philosophy it did not ruin the experience. The food itself was good and satisfying with rich flavors that felt true to Indonesian home style cooking. The rice table in particular looked absolutely delicious and tempting though our group ended up ordering more selectively due to picky eaters at the table. It is definitely something I would want to try on a future visit. Overall SAMPURNA delivers solid Indonesian food and a genuine traditional approach. Despite imperfect service I would return especially to try the rice table next time.

We ordered the Kuning Rice Table, the smallest of the three tasting-menu-style options. Despite being the smallest it came with an unbelievable amount of food! I loved getting to try so many different indonesian dishes, everyone loved something different! The service was very fast, and the food was brought out on hot plates to keep everything warm. They are also very accommodating for vegetarian/vegans - they were able to swap out the meat dishes for the vegetarian in our group while still doing the full-table tasting menu.

The food is excellent, they have English menus for us tourists, they're affordable, and they have a nice beer list and plenty of tables -- making them maybe unique among Surinamese places. It is helpful to make a reservation, but if you didn't ... they have a lot of tables, and many turn over fast, so get in line and wait, you'll get a table eventually. They have a really good selection of vegetarian dishes, so much that you won't feel restricted at all. Spice levels are moderate, so if you're a pepper-head, order some sambal on the side. Do order some of the side dishes; I'm especially fond of the bara and the teloh with salt cod and peanut sauce. Warning, though: Surinamese food uses nuts heavily, so do not go here if you have a nut allergy.

The staff were friendly and courteous, and I would gladly come back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Walked in on a Saturday evening around 7pm as a solo diner and the restaurant was packed. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Strong recommend!

Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of flavors, colors, degrees of spiciness and textures. The dishes may be crispy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard or velvety. Such a beautiful display. A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Ordered both the large and small Tujuh Maret's rice table. The larger rijsttafel includes all the specialties of the chef, composed of 18 different dishes. The smaller rice table can be ordered as mild-medium or medium spicy including chicken and tofu satay, yellow rice, jasmine rice, sweet and sour salads and prawn or rice crackers. Chicken dishes included (from least to most spicy): Ajam Opor-Chicken in a mild sauce of coconut and kurkuma. Ajam Roedjak-Chicken in a spicy sauce of red peppers and coconut. Ajam Rica Rica-Chicken in a spicy sauce of assorted peppers. Beef dishes included (from least to most spicy): Daging Smoor-Beef in a mild soy sauce and nutmeg Daging Rendang-Beef in a spicy sauce of various peppers and coconut Daging Belado-Beef in a spicy sauce of red peppers and tomatoes. Satay dishes included: Sate Ajam- Chicken satay with peanut sauce. Sate Tahu- Tofu satay with peanut sauce. Side dishes included: Gado Gado-Mixed vegetables with peanut butter sauce. Sambal Goreng Telor-Boiled egg with spicy sauce. Atjar Kuning Menado-Sweet and sour salad. Krupuk-Prawn crackers. Emping-Vegetarian crackers. Seroendeng-Grated coconut with peanuts. Nasi Putih-Steamed Jasmine rice. Nasi Kuning-Yellow rice with coconut and lemongrass. Although everything was delicious, it was definitely hard to remember what was what, even after our hostess was graciously described each of the 30 dishes that were on our rice tables. Labels would have helped. Finished with a Pandan crepe filled with coconut. A beautiful way to end a really nice evening in Amsterdam.

Delicious meal in AMS…read more According to Google, rice table, or rijsttafel, is a traditional meal that combines dishes from different Indonesian food cultures and is served with rice. The Dutch adapted the dish during their colonization of Indonesia (1602-1942), basing it on the Indonesian feast nasi padang from West Sumatra. The word rijsttafel is Dutch and translates to "rice table". I was only visiting this beautiful city for a short time. My friend made a resy for us to enjoy a quaint and yummy meal at one of her go-to spots in the area. If you decide to forgo a resy and just walk in, you may have to wait, as there's very limited seating. We walked here and it was easy stroll, enjoying all the little shops & scenery along the way. When you walk in your greeted by a yummy smell of spices. It's definitely a family business. Tiny euro style restaurant. Food - we ordered the Rice table for 2. And bring your stomach space, because it's alot of food. We came hungry and still had leftovers. It's a progressive meal, from mild to spicy dishes. But I believe you can chose your level of spice with the server. 18 dishes come out all at once. Consisting of fish, chicken, beef, veg etc dishes plus rice. All with unique flavor and textures. Would highly suggest it if in the area. Even if it's not in your wheelhouse foodwise, still an interesting experience.

We were told before we were seated that we had 90 minutes for our dinner, which wasn't an issue for us as that's more of a norm in the US, but I could see that feeling too rushed for the usual dinner in Europe. Every table was filled and were seated all pretty close to eachother, which added to the level of noise and feeling of a super busy evening. We ordered the tasting menu and the first course was an AMAZING start- probably the best Indonesian dish I've had outside of Indonesia. The main course is where we had more issues - for having 9 different small plates to try, the amount of rice for 4 people was definitely not enough. Some of my friends in the group were also more sensitive to spice, so it would've been nice if there was more consideration to ordering the dishes by spice level or at a minimum letting us know which plates were more spicy. And while there were many to try, most of these dishes were just okay, nothing really stood out. The dessert course was a much larger plate/portion than any of us were expecting, which was a pleasant surprise but the flavors were also just okay to me.
