If you have time for only one Surinamese meal while visiting Amsterdam, Warung Spang Makandra is a good choice. The food is excellent, they have English menus for us tourists, they're affordable, and they have a nice beer list and plenty of tables -- making them maybe unique among Surinamese places. It is helpful to make a reservation, but if you didn't ... they have a lot of tables, and many turn over fast, so get in line and wait, you'll get a table eventually. They have a really good selection of vegetarian dishes, so much that you won't feel restricted at all. Spice levels are moderate, so if you're a pepper-head, order some sambal on the side. Do order some of the side dishes; I'm especially fond of the bara and the teloh with salt cod and peanut sauce. Warning, though: Surinamese food uses nuts heavily, so do not go here if you have a nut allergy. read more

Had a lovely experience here on a drizzly November evening! So good that I dropped by again for a sandwich to go before I left Amsterdam! Come here for homey, delicious Surinamese food. The staff were friendly and courteous, and I would gladly come back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Walked in on a Saturday evening around 7pm as a solo diner and the restaurant was packed. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. This restaurant is very well rated however I was extremely disappointed by my experience here. While my group was ordering, we kept being told that the dishes we wanted were sold out. This is fine, but when it happens for not one but three of the items our party is requesting, that should be a sign to the staff to offer some assistance in advising what is available and pointing out some alternatives. I ordered the chicken satay with peanut sauce. On the menu, it says this dish is served with "various vegetables". It was only served with unseasoned green beans. I found the dish to be bland and the peanut sauce was too sweet. I understand that restaurants serving exotic cuisines need to cater to everyone's taste, so this is just my opinion and I am aware that my palate will be different from others. I happened to not enjoy this dish. My main issue here is with the service and how customers are being treated. Wonderful experience here. Thankfully I made a reservation, even for 1 person as it is a small place, crowded and a line waiting. Still had to wait since table was not ready at the reservation time. Good service from everyone. Because it is a small place the tables are very very close together. I'm literally at a community table. But it is the food that matters. Started off with ginger drink and the teloh bakkeljauw. Good mix of crispy cassava and the salt cod. Added one of the sauces to it and boy it was spicy. In a good way. Then nasi rames which is a combination of a lot of different items. Rice, noodles, long beans, chicken satay, beef and potato. Each had its own flavor. On our third full day in Amsterdam, we were walking around, looking for somewhere to have lunch. It was still fairly early in the day, around 11am, so not many places were open. We walked down a random, quiet street, and stumbled across Warung Spang Makandra, which had just opened for the day. Because it had just opened, it wasn't busy, although it became much busier as we were dining. Warung Spang Makandra is a family owned Surinamese restaurant that opened in 1978. Surinamese food is similar to Indonesian food, and it was delicious! I had the "Spang Makandra Special" [fried rice & noodles, chicken fillet, chicken, satay, long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potato)]. Not only was the food delicious, but the portions were huge (I struggled to finish it), and the prices were very reasonable -- nothing was over €18. I arrived after 11 PM on my last night in Amsterdam and was so disappointed to find out the kitchen had already closed. We had really wanted to try Surinamese food before leaving. But the staff were incredibly kind and accommodating and offered to give us one last meal. And I'm SO glad they did! Everything was flavorful, comforting, and absolutely delicious. It was such a wonderful introduction to Surinamese cuisine and easily one of the most memorable meals of our trip. The kindness and hospitality alone deserve 5 stars, but the food absolutely does too. Packed on a Monday night and most of the restaurant was reserved. Luckily, they were able to find us a couple of seats. We had never tried Surinam's cuisine before, but this was a treat. Like a cross between Indian with a Caribbean flair. Loved it! Service was great too. Staff was very friendly and helpful with recommendations. Ok...let me start with the fact that the food was great and the portions were plentiful. Here's why they get a 2: 1. No tap water available. My kids asked and they didn't offer it as required by Dutch law for places that serve alcohol. 2. They didn't ask if we had any allergies. Abnormal for Europe. 3. we came here on a whim for dinner at 9pm, an hour before the place closed. there were several wait staff members working the place and it was maybe about 70% full, yet it took us several minutes before we were provided with a menu after we were seated. however, the food came relatively quick and was pretty good. we ordered the nasi rames, and the portion size was pretty generous and the food was very flavorful. the amount of meat given was also very adequate. when we asked for the bill, we again had to wait several minutes while the staff went about the only half full restaurant and didn't pay attention to us, which was frustrating. finally we were able to flag someone down and were told that we actually should pay at the counter, which we should've been told in the first place. it again took a few more minutes of waiting before someone helped us pay out our bill. the ambiance of this restaurant was really nice and would make for a great first date spot, and the food was pretty good. but our experience with the service at this restaurant was very subpar and honestly a bit frustrating at times. i'm really not the type of person to rag about service being subpar but in this case i was pretty unhappy with it because we felt like we were literally being ignored by the wait staff most of the time. read more

Hubby and I shared the Spang special and also the chicken satay special. Both comes with green beans and veggies. I'm so glad I'm not allergic to nuts because the peanut sauce are delicious and they do not skim it at all. It was our 1st time trying Surinamese food and it definitely reminds us a bit Indonesian cuisine as well. I think the main difference is the noodles that is is softer vs stir fry. Worth the half mile walk from the Van Gogh Museum. We were looking for Indonesia food to enjoy while visiting Amsterdam. We ended up in. Surinamese restaurant. It turns out both Indonesia and Suriname were former Dutch Colonies. We ordered from the Chef's specials first what looked good. We ended up ordering Surinamese food. It was good, but definitely different than what I'm and we're used to. Quick suggestion, the fried egg on the special should be fried and then microwaved. I ordered the Spang Makandra Special, and my friend ordered the Vegetarian Spang Makandra Special. Mine was delicious (and included a chicken satay). Really great flavors. Loved the rice and noodles. Not spicy at all. My friend's tempeh was chewy, and I couldn't taste the flavors as well as in my dish. Her vegetarian dish was also more spicy. We unknowingly went on Keti Koti (Emancipation Day in Suriname), so I'm sure that contributed to it. I talked to some kind locals during my wait, and they said the wait was pretty typical. In a city where delicious food is aplenty, I am excited to say this was my favorite restaurant in Amsterdam. The prices are good and the Indonesian food tastes delicious! The first time, I ordered the chicken soup (saoto soup) because I had a cold. The bowl of hot chicken soup was perfect, especially after I added some more chilies. The yellow chilies were my favorite because they were nice and fiery. I also got a dawet to drink and enjoyed it, although it was a little too sweet for my taste. I loved the pretty pink color too! The next time, I got the Javanese rames special. I really enjoyed the beef, noodles, and call me crazy...the green beans were my favorite. If the business ever tells me how they season their green beans, I'd be soooo happy! The chicken satay was also excellent. It was cooked perfectly, not too dry, and had a nice and kinda crispy, but not really crispy (idk how to describe it!) outside. I would highly recommend this dish! My boyfriend also got the spang makandra special and really enjoyed it. I tried one of his brekedel and it was interesting. The sign of Warung Spang Makandra described this hole-in-the-wall as "Javaans Surinaams Eethuis," or Javanese Surinamese Restaurant. For those of you without a geography degree, the Indonesian island of Java and the country of Suriname in South America are practically on opposite sides of the world--but both were former Dutch colonies, so only in the Netherlands can you come across such a unique eatery fusing flavors from cuisines of both those places! My pick from the menu was the Javaanse Rames, a combination dish centered on white rice along with bami (stir-fried noodles), cooked cabbage, a chicken sate skewer topped with peanut sauce, chunks of chicken, and chunks of beef cooked in sauce. Though some of the meats were a bit dry, all the different flavors on the plate were delicious, but my favorites were the bami noodles and the creamy, earthy peanut sauce that came on the chicken sate! Yum, Surinamese food! My friend and I were excited to try some new cuisine while we were in Amsterdam that wasn't simply Dutch. Warung looked like an excellent choice given its high marks, and I am happy to say that this was a good introduction to some good Javanese food. The restaurant was packed even on a Thursday evening. When we arrived around 18:30, we managed to be seated in their last table for two. It took a bit for the server to come to us given how packed it was. I've found the line between Surinamese and Indonesian food to be clouded, but I did get to experience some new tasty bites. We ordered three main dishes (and the names escape me...) a hearty chicken stew, a dish containing lamb and egg, satay and noodles, and some fluffy roti that was full of surprises. Each dish was between €10-15. The meat quality here was superb and we really enjoyed all the dishes that we tried. However, all of our dishes seemed to be overloaded with salt. We were torn that water wasn't already included in meals in Europe because we seemed to struggle to finish our meal due to the sodium content. But it was a great experience trying this cuisine for the first time. I'd be hard pressed to find it here in the States, but the next time I come to Amsterdam, I'll definitely come back to try more items off the menu... long as they lower the salt a bit. There are plenty of Javanese-Indonesian options on the menu, but for something more authentically Surinamese, try the roti. Wow. I'm so excited a local friend recommended this spot. The short: this is a super interesting and delicious cuisine, and this spot is intimate, really affordable and super fresh/delicious. Come, come, come! The longer: we came for a later dinner (by Dutch standards) on Saturday night. The spot is tiny & no frills. You get paper napkins, drinks come by the bottle or can, and there's no alcohol. But, the food is amazing. We shared a chicken broth soup with bean sprouts & white rice -- which was amazing. And, we each had lumpia; they're chicken spring rolls. Then, we had a sampler plate over fried rice. This. satay. Sauce. Seriously -- you could take a bath in the peanut deliciousness. The rice was super flavorful, there was another chicken dish that was soft & perfectly cooked/seasoned.
