If you have time for only one Surinamese meal while visiting Amsterdam, Warung Spang Makandra is a good choice. The food is excellent, they have English menus for us tourists, they're affordable, and they have a nice beer list and plenty of tables -- making them maybe unique among Surinamese places. It is helpful to make a reservation, but if you didn't ... they have a lot of tables, and many turn over fast, so get in line and wait, you'll get a table eventually. They have a really good selection of vegetarian dishes, so much that you won't feel restricted at all. Spice levels are moderate, so if you're a pepper-head, order some sambal on the side. Do order some of the side dishes; I'm especially fond of the bara and the teloh with salt cod and peanut sauce. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Good service from everyone. Because it is a small place the tables are very very close together. I'm literally at a community table. But it is the food that matters. Started off with ginger drink and the teloh bakkeljauw. Good mix of crispy cassava and the salt cod. Added one of the sauces to it and boy it was spicy. In a good way. Then nasi rames which is a combination of a lot of different items. Rice, noodles, long beans, chicken satay, beef and potato. Each had its own flavor. On our third full day in Amsterdam, we were walking around, looking for somewhere to have lunch. It was still fairly early in the day, around 11am, so not many places were open. We walked down a random, quiet street, and stumbled across Warung Spang Makandra, which had just opened for the day. Because it had just opened, it wasn't busy, although it became much busier as we were dining. Warung Spang Makandra is a family owned Surinamese restaurant that opened in 1978. Surinamese food is similar to Indonesian food, and it was delicious! I had the "Spang Makandra Special" [fried rice & noodles, chicken fillet, chicken, satay, long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potato)]. Not only was the food delicious, but the portions were huge (I struggled to finish it), and the prices were very reasonable -- nothing was over €18. we came here on a whim for dinner at 9pm, an hour before the place closed. there were several wait staff members working the place and it was maybe about 70% full, yet it took us several minutes before we were provided with a menu after we were seated. however, the food came relatively quick and was pretty good. we ordered the nasi rames, and the portion size was pretty generous and the food was very flavorful. the amount of meat given was also very adequate. when we asked for the bill, we again had to wait several minutes while the staff went about the only half full restaurant and didn't pay attention to us, which was frustrating. finally we were able to flag someone down and were told that we actually should pay at the counter, which we should've been told in the first place. it again took a few more minutes of waiting before someone helped us pay out our bill. the ambiance of this restaurant was really nice and would make for a great first date spot, and the food was pretty good. but our experience with the service at this restaurant was very subpar and honestly a bit frustrating at times. i'm really not the type of person to rag about service being subpar but in this case i was pretty unhappy with it because we felt like we were literally being ignored by the wait staff most of the time. read more

This restaurant was a bit out of the way from sightseeing in the city, but it was worth the trek! Btw - google maps works great with the unlimited GVB pass tram/metro pass. Hubby and I shared the Spang special and also the chicken satay special. Both comes with green beans and veggies. I ordered the Spang Makandra Special, and my friend ordered the Vegetarian Spang Makandra Special. Mine was delicious (and included a chicken satay). Really great flavors. Loved the rice and noodles. Not spicy at all. My friend's tempeh was chewy, and I couldn't taste the flavors as well as in my dish. Her vegetarian dish was also more spicy. The first time, I ordered the chicken soup (saoto soup) because I had a cold. The bowl of hot chicken soup was perfect, especially after I added some more chilies. The yellow chilies were my favorite because they were nice and fiery. I also got a dawet to drink and enjoyed it, although it was a little too sweet for my taste. I loved the pretty pink color too! The next time, I got the Javanese rames special. I really enjoyed the beef, noodles, and call me crazy...the green beans were my favorite. If the business ever tells me how they season their green beans, I'd be soooo happy! The chicken satay was also excellent. The sign of Warung Spang Makandra described this hole-in-the-wall as "Javaans Surinaams Eethuis," or Javanese Surinamese Restaurant. For those of you without a geography degree, the Indonesian island of Java and the country of Suriname in South America are practically on opposite sides of the world--but both were former Dutch colonies, so only in the Netherlands can you come across such a unique eatery fusing flavors from cuisines of both those places! My pick from the menu was the Javaanse Rames, a combination dish centered on white rice along with bami (stir-fried noodles), cooked cabbage, a chicken sate skewer topped with peanut sauce, chunks of chicken, and chunks of beef cooked in sauce. Though some of the meats were a bit dry, all the different flavors on the plate were delicious, but my favorites were the bami noodles and the creamy, earthy peanut sauce that came on the chicken sate! Each table also came with ramekins of two pepper sauces: a red chili oil, and a watery (but extremely spicy) yellow chili sauce. Yum, Surinamese food! My friend and I were excited to try some new cuisine while we were in Amsterdam that wasn't simply Dutch. Warung looked like an excellent choice given its high marks, and I am happy to say that this was a good introduction to some good Javanese food. The restaurant was packed even on a Thursday evening. When we arrived around 18:30, we managed to be seated in their last table for two. It took a bit for the server to come to us given how packed it was. I've found the line between Surinamese and Indonesian food to be clouded, but I did get to experience some new tasty bites. We ordered three main dishes (and the names escape me...) a hearty chicken stew, a dish containing lamb and egg, satay and noodles, and some fluffy roti that was full of surprises. Each dish was between €10-15. The meat quality here was superb and we really enjoyed all the dishes that we tried. However, all of our dishes seemed to be overloaded with salt. We were torn that water wasn't already included in meals in Europe because we seemed to struggle to finish our meal due to the sodium content. But it was a great experience trying this cuisine for the first time. I'd be hard pressed to find it here in the States, but the next time I come to Amsterdam, I'll definitely come back to try more items off the menu... long as they lower the salt a bit.
