We loved Max--incredibly kind and attentive, happy waitstaff, a fun and bright atmosphere, and tasty food--just the right level of spice for us. Tempted to return on the same trip!

While going on a stroll, my wife and I couldn't help but notice the numerous Indonesian restaurants that we encountered. Since it was late, a majority of them were closed; however, we made a note to have Indonesian food for dinner the next day. The following day I browsed Yelp and found Max Amsterdam, which would be our destination for dinner (I was so excited that I failed to notice that reservations are preferred). Upon entering the very busy restaurant we were greeted by an employee that informed us that they generally prefer that patrons make reservations; however, by the grace of God (or whomever you believe in), a table for two became available due to a no-show. Once we were seated, we both ordered glasses of wine and opted for the two course Rijsttafel menu without the MAX dessert. Like clockwork, a serve brought out the tasteful Javanese chicken satay on a crispy marinated vegetables. After finishing this course, the server brought out the main course which consisted of small portioned Indonesian specialties such as Beef rendang and Balinese chicken curry. To be honest, there was nothing placed in front of us that was short of being delicious. I'm a creature of habit that generally sticks to Thai and Vietnamese cuisines. Therefore, I'm grateful that my wife encouraged me to try Indonesian food. If you're looking for authentic cuisines from Indonesia, I highly suggest checking out Max Amsterdam.

We have never had Indonesian, so this was new for us - and we loved it! The restaurant is small, make a reservation and prepare to enjoy the closeness of the tables, the food is worth it! Loved the Rijsttafel menu and the Rioja wine complimented beautifully! The beef rendang, Balinese chicken, oriental spiced soy chicken & gado gado were great, I think the only dish we didn't finish was the eggplant. We didn't have the desert but wishing now we had. Highly recommend, try something new and be rewarded here.

We stopped by MAX thanks to their kitchen remaining open late Starts off with a chicken satay salad. Kinda salty but lekker. For the main rijsttafel, there's a total of 9 side dishes. A mix of proteins, curries, and spices. Everything had a lot of flavor and each one tasted unique. I don't think it was particularly mind blowing but I loved the buffet style eating & it was fun picking out your fav items. They are very generous with the rice too.

After hearing Amsterdam has good Indonesian food we decided to check this place out and it was probably the best food we had in our stay here! We got the two course meal with the Javanese chicken satay salad and then the main course with a mix of Indonesian specialties. The meat was very flavorful and tender and I pretty much enjoyed each plate. The service was also very nice and we were checked up on often. Definitely check out Indonesian food from here!

Wonderful Rijsttafel experience. The starter salad and meat was delicious. The wine we ordered paired so well with all the food. The meats and seafood and eggs were sauced and seasoned perfectly. Meats were so tender and tasted good with the rice. Dessert variety had various cakes and tropical Asian flavors in them. Cute restaurant with 2 floors, second flr is the lofty private area where we ate. Check out pics, highly recommend.

Rick Steves said Indonesian food in Amsterdam is a must - so when planning our exit meal after a two week jaunt through Belgium and Netherlands, I only had one thing left on my list: Indonesian food. Why is Indonesian food popular in Amsterdam? A quick google search will tell you why this Dutch capital is reportedly one of the best places, outside of Indonesia, to find this cuisine. I love meat, spice, and sauce. I love curry, peppers, and explosive flavors. Max delivered. When I searched for options, Max came up as highly reviewed. I noticed their $39 tasting menu option, and thought it was a steal. I recommend reservations. The tasting menu includes a beautiful satay chicken salad, followed by 9 small portions of their best eats, including beef rendang, eggplant, two kinds of chicken, red curry shrimp, and a spicy egg. I could have sipped every sauce through a straw - it was to die for. My favorite was the oriental spiced soy chicken in a yellow curry. However, the rendang was incredibly tender. 10/10 - would recommend everything we tried. To top it office, service was wonderful and the ambiance was trendy and clean. I had a wonderful glass of natural orange wine, but there are many different beverage options. For an extra charge, you can add a dessert - but I was too full. Max was one of the highlights of our trip! I recommend checking it out.

Menu, read the special at top of menu, that is what we ordered. So delicious.

This was hands down the best Indonesian food I've ever had. We ordered the special, look at the menu pic for explanation, I wouldn't want to ruin it. We sat outside so I don't have any comment about inside ambiance. The service was 5 star. I love this place

Rijsttafel, main course.

Max is the owner and he and his staff work their butts off. Restaurant was packed and not too noisy. While they were busy the service was good. The Indonesian Rijsttafel was amazing. The appetizer dish is sate but not served on a stick instead it was served on a bed of greens and was most unexpected loved this dish. The main course with about 12 Indonesian mini dishes. Enough food to feed everyone. Love this place. All the food was delicious with the Heineken fresh on tap and cold. We will be back.

The food and flavors at this restaurant are some of the most complex and tasty i have had anywhere. Very veggie forward and just more than i could have expected on any level. We were super late because we underestimated how long it would take us to get there by foot. They were gracious and sat us anyway. We started with a mushroom dish that set a strong beginning to the meal. The next course were several tastings with rice. You can eat with your hands or a utensil. We had minerally German wine with our meal and coffee with our outstanding desert which had a variety of three different kinds in one plate. The meal was EXCELLENCE to the max. If you've never had Indonesian food, please treat yourself to Max..

When in Amsterdam... try rijsttafel! When the Brits colonized, an interesting mild dish called tikka masala emerged. The dutch however managed to translate a bit of spice and heat and you get a thali-esque spread of dish samples. Needless to say I had to try this experience more than once and my favorite was at Max. The starter was incredible. A simple salad with a fantastic balance of textures, savory and crunch. Each of the plates in the main dish was delicious and I was surprised to enjoy the vegetable one most of all! I also found the flavors of the rendang and both chicken dishes outstanding. There was a bit of spice and kick to most dishes, not as much heat as I generally prefer, but this experience is very white person centric and not customizable. We sat upstairs overlooking the garden alley (lovely). The tables were close together but somehow didn't feel claustrophobic. Max himself was lovely and we enjoyed our table service as well as the drinks.

Delicious rijstaffel!!

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. The most delicious Indonesian food I have ever eaten and plentiful too! Great service in this cozy Amsterdam restaurant.

Rijsttafel is a fun and delicious way to experience the flavours of the culinary Indonesian food.

The restaurant offers a varied menu inspired by classic Indonesian dishes and promotes a relaxed welcoming atmosphere with the option to request specific dishes in advance including lobster or seafood with prior notice. We were seated without a reservation which was convenient and appreciated. The service was a bit grumpy and not the warmest but still attentive and functional throughout the meal. While the hospitality did not fully match the restaurant's stated philosophy it did not ruin the experience. The food itself was good and satisfying with rich flavors that felt true to Indonesian home style cooking. The rice table in particular looked absolutely delicious and tempting though our group ended up ordering more selectively due to picky eaters at the table. It is definitely something I would want to try on a future visit. Overall SAMPURNA delivers solid Indonesian food and a genuine traditional approach. Despite imperfect service I would return especially to try the rice table next time.

We ordered the Kuning Rice Table, the smallest of the three tasting-menu-style options. Despite being the smallest it came with an unbelievable amount of food! I loved getting to try so many different indonesian dishes, everyone loved something different! The service was very fast, and the food was brought out on hot plates to keep everything warm. They are also very accommodating for vegetarian/vegans - they were able to swap out the meat dishes for the vegetarian in our group while still doing the full-table tasting menu.

We weren't sure we would make it as we were only in town for the evening and we had just come from 18 hour international travel--extremely jet lagged and feeling delirious. I had no appetite but am very glad we pushed ourselves to go because it was such a treat! Rice table is an Indonesian multi course sampler meal. I'm glad I chose to dine at Aneka Rasa. The inside of the restaurant was romantic with candlelit dining and elaborate decor. €30 per person can seem expensive but we were pleasantly surprised that it's truly €30 total. No tax or tip. Our tap water was also free. When we entered, the owner, Jerry informed us they're only doing rice table (no a la carte dining) and asked us if we want the regular or vegetarian meal. We chose regular. Jerry learned our names and addressed us by them for the rest of the evening. The regular rijsttafel came with chicken sate, soy chicken, beef rendang, curry chicken, veggies, spicy eggs, cucumber salad, fried & white rice, chips. That chicken sate was the best we've ever had! The peanut sauce on it is bomb!!! We've never seen so much peanut sauce on chicken sate-- the chicken skewers were bathing in sauce. The chicken was tender & juicy. I ate up all the leftover sauce with rice. The eggs have a spicy kick so be careful if you have low tolerance. Everything else tasted fresh. We appreciated the variety and being able to savor multiple different things. It was plenty of food for the both of us (and we eat a lot!). We talked to Jerry a bit and he was incredibly kind and welcoming. I appreciated the Christian music played in the background and messages around the restaurant. Highly recommend this restaurant for friendly service, yummy food, and good ambience!

The food is excellent, they have English menus for us tourists, they're affordable, and they have a nice beer list and plenty of tables -- making them maybe unique among Surinamese places. It is helpful to make a reservation, but if you didn't ... they have a lot of tables, and many turn over fast, so get in line and wait, you'll get a table eventually. They have a really good selection of vegetarian dishes, so much that you won't feel restricted at all. Spice levels are moderate, so if you're a pepper-head, order some sambal on the side. Do order some of the side dishes; I'm especially fond of the bara and the teloh with salt cod and peanut sauce. Warning, though: Surinamese food uses nuts heavily, so do not go here if you have a nut allergy.

The staff were friendly and courteous, and I would gladly come back next time I'm in Amsterdam. Walked in on a Saturday evening around 7pm as a solo diner and the restaurant was packed. I didn't make reservations so was hoping they could squeeze me in and it was a yes, just had to wait for about 8-10 minutes until the bar area seating cleared up a bit. Score! Seated the menu was presented right away, after about 10 minutes staff asked for my order, I got: - Spang Makandra Special €17.50: this is a plate of several of the house specialities. Fried rice & noodles, braised chicken, grilled chicken satay, stir-fried long beans, egg, potato sambal and perkedel (fried potatoes). So tasty all around! Loooved the braised chicken was done very well, the peanut sauce used for the chicken satay was a bit on the sweeter side. The egg was scrambled (believe this was intentional for this preparation), the flavors were delicious! I can't comment to the authenticity since I'm no expert in Surinamese food though would certainly recommend this dish to all. - Dawet €3.00: if you're familiar with SE Asian shaved ice with palm sugar syrup, the flavor of this drink is reminiscent. While the color is a bright pepto bismol pink, it's mostly coconut milk with a strong flavor of gula malaka. Was on the sweeter side though glad for the coconut milk to balance out the spiciness of the hot sauce. - Beef rendang sandwich €6.50: sooo yummy. Considering the Indonesian and Chinese influences in Surinamese food, I've eaten my share of specifically Malaysian and Indonesian food in those countries and the curry flavors in the sandwich were prominent and super tasty. The spices were quite strong that even wrapped in foil and inside a plastic bag, my entire bag smelled like rendang (in a most moth-watering way lol) after carrying for some hours. The decor was cozy and filled the left side wall with pics of patrons of the past, opposite wall full length mirrors to make the space look larger. Seating enough for about 50-60 probably. Even though they were slammed, staff checked in periodically on how I was doing, refilled water, which indirectly led to an interesting conversation with another solo diner sitting at the bar. Strong recommend!

Definitely make a reservation as the narrow restaurant has limited seating. They turned away several parties on an early Thursday evening around 7 PM. A rijsttafel is an elaborate Indonesian meal that was adapted by the Dutch who colonized Indonesia. It consists of many, many side dishes served in small portions that are accompanied by rice prepared in several different ways. Although the dishes served are undoubtedly Indonesian, the rijsttafel's origins were colonial. The Dutch introduced the rice table to impress visitors with the exotic abundance of their colony while showcasing foods from different regions. Rijsttafels strive to feature an array of flavors, colors, degrees of spiciness and textures. The dishes may be crispy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard or velvety. Such a beautiful display. A feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Ordered both the large and small Tujuh Maret's rice table. The larger rijsttafel includes all the specialties of the chef, composed of 18 different dishes. The smaller rice table can be ordered as mild-medium or medium spicy including chicken and tofu satay, yellow rice, jasmine rice, sweet and sour salads and prawn or rice crackers. Chicken dishes included (from least to most spicy): Ajam Opor-Chicken in a mild sauce of coconut and kurkuma. Ajam Roedjak-Chicken in a spicy sauce of red peppers and coconut. Although everything was delicious, it was definitely hard to remember what was what, even after our hostess was graciously described each of the 30 dishes that were on our rice tables.
