It was nice that they allow people to order the rijsttafel for 1, and I saw a number of people doing this. Excellent Indonesian restaurant named after the color blue but the decor inside is red. Speaking of the interior, it's a lot bigger than it looks from the outside. In fact, there's a second-floor dining area that you probably wouldn't notice unless they sit you there. Ordered the following: - Chicken Satay - 10/10: best satay I've ever had. Hands down. The sauce is impeccable. Super savory. No need to dip it in anything. Chicken is moist and tender. Categorized as a side dish, but this really is a main event. Every table was ordering it. - Beef Rendang - 6.8/10: nice flavor. Medium spice. Beef is tender, but I wish they used fattier cuts of meat. Would elevate this dish definitely. - Prawns - 7/10: had some nice heat. Prawns were tender and full of flavor, but kind of small. Dishes came with a variety of small add-ons that's a bit hard to describe. After 3 1/2 weeks in Europe, we were so ready for some Asian food! We found this spot, which was an Amsterdam branch of a Bib Gourmand-awarded Indonesian place. The original was a bit too far from Amsterdam for us (we were traveling the next day), so we gave this one a shot. If you've been living on meat-and-potato-type dishes in Northern Europe, you'll probably love the punch of flavor and spice that Southeast Asian food brings. For me though, since I cook Asian food at home all the time, the flavors were on the mild side and didn't quite wow me like the reviews suggested. We ordered the authentic rice table menu with meat, fish, and veggie dishes -- basically a dream for people like us who love to try a bit of everything but have smaller stomachs. Such a fun concept! The only downside was that some dishes seemed prepped too far ahead and not kept hot enough-- a few warm dishes were cold, the rendang wasn't as tender as it should be, and the spices were mild at best. Dessert was the low point, and the espresso martini was just... meh. On the bright side, service was efficient and friendly, and overall it did hit the spot after weeks of European food. Portions were on the smaller side -- we're not big eaters, but even we left feeling not quite full. At around $100 per person with drinks and one dessert, it felt a bit pricey for the quality and quantity, even by Amsterdam standards. We were advised by many to try the Indonesian food while in Amsterdam and this seemed to be the perfect spot! We enjoyed the Rijsttafels Authentiek, which was like a tasting menu which included several meat, fish and veggie dishes. I'm not a fan of mussels though so they offered to substitute them for the shrimp, which was so kind. It was truly an excellent experience and we enjoyed every moment of it. When in Amsterdam, one should eat the food of the country's former colonial possessions, so off to Blauw we went, to experience an authentic Indonesian Rijstaffel dinner. Slight snag in our reservation; although the on-line system confirmed a 7:30 table, they serve by seatings at 6 and 8; not sure why the on-line system would take a 7:30 in that case, but it did. After a few minutes with the host staff, we were offered a bar high top; after about 10 mins they gave us a regular table. What they didn't mention was that we had to wait until 8 to order. Oh well, the food was worth waiting for. We ordered the authentic Rijstaffel, which includes meat, fish and vegetable options. We were not expecting the variety of dishes that were delivered to our table; the waiter brought about 7 plates, and then came back with about 8 more! The food was delicious; the chicken satay and the goat satay were both wonderful. We also enjoyed the beef rendang, chicken curry, and fried fish with sweet soy sauce. The shrimp in spicy sauce was also a winner; the shrimp were plump and juicy. Finally, the veggie dishes were pretty varied; crispy honeyed potato sticks, sweet and sour pickled cucumber slices, jackfruit in curry sauce, cabbage with a sour vinegar sauce, egg curry, and a super-delicious sautéed green bean dish. The food was served with white and fried rice. It was WAY too much for the two of us to finish. We had a very fun and enjoyable time sampling a massive amount of Dutch Indonesian food with about 17 different dishes (I lost count) with that came with our meat and fish rice table. It was really ridiculous but I guess that's the point. I am not familiar with Indonesian food, but my understanding is that the rice table was invented by the Dutch to showcase the rich and diverse array of flavors and spices of their colony. Nostalgic view of my family's gustatory adventure at Blauw. At the time, August 9, 2011, we were greeted by an enthusiastic and ambitious chef. The food was new, engaging, and absolutely delicious. Extremely disappointing experience, especially given all the glowing reviews online. Everything was incredibly sugary, and the food has definitely been adjusted for Western palates: it felt like a poorly executed version of the General Tso's chicken/orange chicken of Indonesian food. I don't like to give 1 star reviews (the only ones I've given so far are for food poisoning and a literal scam), but this was really an awful dinner. My friend and I ordered the Selera Blauw (meat and vegetables rijsttafel) and the Ikan Rasa (seafood and vegetables), which were each 33,50 €. Every single one of the 20 dishes (including the rice) we had was awful, except the shrimp in sambal sauce, which was overcooked but relatively ok. Everything except the rice, lamb curry, meatball, beef Rendang, and sambal shrimp was way too sugary. Their dishes aren't spicy either: the sambal was the only spicy thing that came to our table. Some notable dishes: -White rice: unevenly cooked with some dry parts. Worse than what an average rice cooker makes. -Nasi goreng: I would not call this fried rice. It had the same texture as the white rice, i.e. parts were soggy, and it wasn't crispy at all. -Sambal goreng kentang (sweet and spicy potatoes): potato shreds in the what felt like the sugariest wonton dipping sauce imaginable. -Satays: the sauce was incredibly sugary -Ikan kembung (mackerel in candelnuts sauce) - simultaneously salty, chewy, squishy, and tough. This one I have to give credit to Rick Steves, travels through Europe series. Well at least the concept of a cultural diversion that connects the Dutch Masters who brought the flavors and spices of "the spice islands" to much of Europe during their dominance as sea trading merchants. Amsterdams location made it the perfect port to off load cargo from the various ocean going merchant ships with inland waterways to deliver these goods into the interior of Europe. I brushed up on his series knowing I'd be revisiting Amsterdam having come 20 years ago with work colleagues. I love Burmese, Vietnamese, Singaporean etc cuisine. I've never experienced Indonesian. Considering this was a meal not likely to be full of hung over tourists, a bit upscale for the hostel bistro crowd, I was very much looking forward to something non European in a less traveled, more residential part of Amsterdam. We picked based on highest ranking, farthest from center of town and most expensive. Reservations a must. We scored the last at 9 pm. A 12 minute über delivered us to this modern restaurant in a very lovely Hayes Valley or Greenwich village type of hood. We were warmly greeted and seated even though we were 10 minutes early. We started with Indonesian beer and the street food appetizers. This was a bowl of mostly fried items stuffed with savory seafood or ground meats. We ordered one seafood and one meat Rijsttafel. Rijsttafel translates to "rice table". This is the elaborate feast from the Padong area of West Sumatra. Consisting of various types of rice served with many "side" Or sampler dishes, seafood, meats, fruits and veggies served with a smashing array of delicious sambals, curries, satays. The combinations and variety warranted the 24 little boat shaped dishes we received. Some savory, some sweet, salty spicy. It was like a trip through Indonesian cuisine all on one table. Actually that was the idea. A way for Dutch Masters to sample variety's of special dishes from all parts of Indonesia in sampler size so they could discover all at once what they liked best. The beer was perfect for these diverse and potently clean palette popping Nasi Padongs. And we had many. We were pretty stuffed even though each had no more that a bite or two in each boat. The waiter did explain what's in each dish but buy the 10th you pretty much forget and are AMF-YOYO. So for us it was fun trying to determine what was what. My favorite item was the cucumber salad (perhaps because my first Live thing since being in Europe) and the braised beef dish. It had Star Anise, lemon grass a hint of coconut milk, soy and sugar that created a deep glaze coating each of the cubes of meat in crunchy shell. That one I'll have to try to recreate at home! And yep there is an elegant cook book available to purchase. Unfortunately at this point only in Dutch. English being worked on. This was certainly one of the highlights thus far in our 4 country beer influenced trek through Europe. And who knew we'd discover a new beer from Indonesia! read more

Order the first one on the list of three, or the vegetarian one if you must. There is also a fish intensive, but it's pretty advanced. I don't recommend it for first timers. Many "exotic" flavors to challenge and delight your palate. You just got to trust them. A great spot for Indonesian food, my friend has taken every visitor here. The restaurant is dark, smaller, and trendy. Recommend reservations here as people take quite awhile to finish their meal here. Greeted with some fried chip things with a sweet and sour sauce and a very spicy sambal type of sauce. For the rice table, you get a variety of dishes that are about 15 in total. Veggie dishes, salads, dried coconut, beef, pork, and fish dishes! A one person serving is more than plenty for 2, but they charge an additional 10 euros if you share, so we ordered the pork belly entree to share and eventually take home. In the middle of the table, there is a little heated area for the meats to stay warm. Just some of the things that were included was a fried rice, regular rice, spicy fish, goat, but my favorite was the gado gado (salad that almost reminded me of a spring roll without the shrimp and pork) and the boiled egg dish. Unfortunately the meat was really overcooked and dry. The goat was much better than I thought, especially since I don't care for it normally. The chicken skewers were nice as well. Was stuffed but we didn't even finish all the various dishes, and barely made a dent in the pork belly (cooked beautifully but the sauce was a little too salty). I love how they provide free still water, and drank way too much from the spiciness. Had a very nice helping of wine as well. For dessert, I had the fried mango with passion fruit ice cream, amazing!!!!! So different but two of my favorite things put together wonderfully. Service is very pleasant here too, although the server never got our jackets as we had requested so we got it ourselves. Prices are very fair as well. Went here with a friend to check out the rice table after reading so many great reviews about it--we opted for the meat version of the rice table. I can't even tell you how many dishes they brought out, but the whole table was covered. Even more impressive, I don't think that there was a single dish that we did not enjoy--everything was delicious! This is a fantastic restaurant. We were unable to get into "Ron" just down the street but this place did not disappoint. Highly recommend the Rijstttaffels authentic for the table. Such a great variety of so many amazing tastes on the menu. And get the green pancake dessert. Friendly knowledgeable staff and great drinks as well. read more

Very nice experience, we had dinner in the gardens and it was really nice. The restaurant is quite expensive & they serve gourmet food. The wine selection its ok.
