The best meal I have ever had!!! I planned a work dinner here for ~20 guests and the host made the experience simple and enjoyable. With our mid-range budget, we got an amazing amount of food (everyone was plenty full by the end) and plenty of drinks. They even helped us with transportation, helping to call us cabs at the end of the night, and were very willing to accommodate our allergy/dietary requests. This was THE BEST MEAL we had during our 9-day trip to Amsterdam! (And we even visited the highly rated Hemelse Modder, which paled in comparison to Blue Pepper.) I was encouraged to seek out Indonesian food while in the Netherlands, as they have authentic offerings. The food at Blue Pepper was unbelievably good. The flavors were perfectly melded together - in a word, "magical". The restaurant accommodated my dietary restrictions with ease. The staff was attentive and professional. The ambiance was romantic. And they have offerings for those that can't handle spicy food. We visited this restaurant near the end of our trip. I wanted so badly to squeeze in a second visit, but sadly could not make it work with the itinerary. To this day, nearly 6 months later(!!!), I'm still dreaming about the food at Blue Pepper. Stop scrolling and just book a table at this place. The food is amazingly creative and flavorful, the service is friendly and attentive, and the whole experience was magical. The four of us came in out of the rain soaking wet and the staff sprang into action to make us comfortable. Three of us had the rijsttafel (one vegan) and the other entre was off the menu. This is the place I go to in Amsterdam for reliable and delicious food. They ALWAYS impress and over the years I have tried probably 20 dishes and they all have been epic. I have been let down so many times with TripAdvisor or yelp 5 star reviews at places and blue pepper is where I always go to get guaranteed amazing food every time. The food here is simply wonderful! I felt that the menu, while nice was a bit limited, although it included some interesting protein options. It is also rather expensive. For a starter, we shared the venison satay. I am not sure I've ever seen venison on a menu, anywhere else (although we cook it at home) so of course we had to try it. This was an excellent preparation of a meat that can be on the game-y side. Fantastic. The kitchen sent out a small salad with apples, arugula, orange slices & pomegranate seeds, very nice. This place was superb. The food was excellent, and the service personable and to the point. They do one seating a night: There's no clamoring to clear tables and seat the next round of customers. And with five courses (or however many it was), plan to sit back and enjoy a good show. They offered us more or less two alternate menus, but were happy to accommodate requests (no seafood, or could we get this appetizer even if we're getting that menu?). The food is Indonesian, but modern; it's a riff on Indonesian ingredients and flavors as much as anything. And did I mention delicious? I won't focus on this dish or that, because I think the menu adapts to seasons and what foods are fresh, but you could tell that the kitchen was having a good time putting this together. It's a little hole in the wall, kinda, extremely elegantly put together but in a long narrow space. I probably saw no more than about five service staff while we were there for a few hours; that's all it takes to wait on the relatively small number of tables. And did I mention delicious? My cousin had never been to Amsterdam, so in addition to showing him the grittier parts of the city, I also decided to show him some of the finer, tamer side as well. We found Blue Pepper at the recommendation of our very hip concierge. When we asked about having a proper Rijsttafel, without hesitation he suggested this place. When we got there, it totally wasn't what I expected. They have bright blue walls, and lack a lot of the kitschy pseudo Indonesian wares that a lot of other places have. It is very understated. The interior is really non-descript, but clean and elegant (in that minimalist kind of way). Enough about that, and on to the food! The food was simply breath-taking. The presentation and flavors were simply amazing (truly not enough words in my vocabulary to praise them)! I started with the open lumpia of goose in cinnamon and clove flavors and teamed winter roll of chicken (which was the stand out for me. It was perfectly balanced and flavorful. I literally had to stop conversation to properly appreciate the mastery that was this appetizer). Then there was the saté of garlicmarinated beef with Indonesian lime and soy sauce with a spicy tropical fruit salad with tamarind. Once again, perfectly executed and delicious! I followed that up with the filet of cod in a Sumatran sauce of chili and turmeric, complimented by stirfried vegetables with white pepper. The fish had been flash fried that bathed in sauce- absolute perfection! Finally in the line-up was a dessert trio- lychee mousse, tropical fruit salad and mandarin icecream on a bed of berry compote. All in all, a great meal! Honestly one of the best I've had in Amsterdam, and maybe ever! I would totally recommend this place for a special occasion or simply for a food lover seeking indulgence. The Dutch colonial feast, the rijsttafel, was created to provide a festive and official type of banquet that would represent the multi-ethnic nature of the Indonesian archipelago. Dishes were assembled from many of the far flung regions of Indonesia, where many different cuisines exist, often determined by ethnicity and culture of the particular island or island group -- from Javanese favourite sateh, tempeh and seroendeng, to vegetarian cuisine gado-gado and lodeh with sambal lalab from Batavia and Preanger. From spicy rendang and gulai curry from the Minangkabau region in Sumatra, to East Indies unbiquitous dishes nasi goreng, soto ayam and kroepoek crackers. Also Indonesian dishes from hybrid influences; such as Chinese babi ketjap, loempia and bamie to European beef smoor.
