Our first indonesian food experience, I wonder why we waited for so long. We ordered the (non vegan) tasting table, which I thought was a pretty good deal to be able to taste multiple dishes, and we didn't leave hungry. We also got the fried dumpling appetizer (small portion only two dumplings) which we enjoyed, good dipping sauce. The tasting table was nice because we were completely unfamiliar with the cuisine with no idea what to get, this allowed us to try multiple things, share, and I thought the portions were a good size for the both of us. What a delicious way to start the day in Amsterdam. Mama Makan Indonesian Kitchen is located in the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the Plantage District. Nice to be able to get a delicious breakfast each morning on a recent trip to Europe. Eggs were cooked to order. The salmon Benedict orders were served on a slice of brown bread with spinach. Add an avocado half on the side. Delicious! So many options on the breakfast buffet. Smoked salmon. Beets. Indonesian noodle salad. Fresh fruit. Sautéed vegetables. Potatoes. Cauliflower. Hummus. Yogurt. Lots and lots of cheese to try. Gouda. Blue cheese. Geitenkaas/Goat cheese. Dill havarti. Edam. Nice to sample so many tasty varieties. Pastries galore. Dutch pancakes. Madeleines. Scones. Freshly baked loaves of bread. Focaccia. Flatbreads. Indonesian pastries. The Indonesian layer cakes, spekkoek or lapis legit, are so beautiful and so delicious. Imagine the effort that goes into making a cake with eighteen thin layers. The cakes origin goes back to when the Dutch colonized Indonesia and marries the European cake with local Indonesian spices. So delightful. Coffee, loose leaf tea, hot cocoa or freshly squeezed juices and fruit smoothies are all available. Different options were available each morning of our stay, but there were so many options that it made each day a unique dining experience. A great place for breakfast in Amsterdam. read more

4 stars for the food, 3 stars for the overall experience -- not great value, plus hidden fees, and not the most balanced set meals. This was my third time to Amsterdam and we figured we'd do an Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table). I had seen that this restaurant -- part of the Hyatt Regency hotel -- offers a vegan rice table for €41. So I made a reservation for a week in advance for my birthday. Unfortunately, when we arrived, we were told they were only doing a Mother's Day special, which was basically the same but for €60 each and included a glass of Prosecco. The already exorbitant meal now became ridiculously exorbitant. We thought we'd do it anyway, having looked forward to it for a while. The menu is simple - you pick one of the two rice table offerings (vegan or not). They first bring you the Prosecco, along with some water (which they dishonestly tacked another €5 on to the bill for -- then wondered why we didn't tip them at the end), cassava chips (we had to tell them to take back the shrimp chips -- c'mon, we just said we were vegan), a veggie fritter appetizer, and then finally the extravagant rice table. The rice table consisted of 10 hot dishes, 2 bowls of rice (one white, one yellow), some crispy potato strings, cucumber, and shredded coconut. Of the main 10 dishes, many were deep fried, which became too much after a while. But we did enjoy almost every dish -- especially the tempeh dishes. Everything was richly and interestingly flavoured. We couldn't finish everything due to the heaviness and quantity of the food. After the meal, you pick one of the two desserts (both vegan), so we split one of each: a trio of sorbets, plus mama cendol (panda jelly, sweet purple potato foam, jackfruit, coconut milk, and palm sugar syrup). Both were very tasty. All in all, a very good, tasty culinary experience, despite the high amount of deep fried items, but poor value for money and borderline deceptive pricing/business practices. I doubt we'll return any time soon to do another rijsttafel if this was a representative experience, but if we did, we'd try another place. read more

Really beautiful restaurant inside the Hyatt Regency! My colleagues and I booked a reservation a few weeks in advance. We opted to order Mama's Rijsttafel (meaning rice table). According to the website, it's the Dutch way to enjoy Indonesian food family style. The Rijsttafel included Daging Kalio, Sambal Goreng Daging, Sambal Goreng Telor, Sambal Goreng Tahu Buncis, Saté Ayam, and more! Since I can't have shellfish, the servers immediately accommodated this, no questions asked! They even made sure to set the shellfish dishes on the other side of the table so I wouldn't accidentally eat it. A wonderful night and a lovely meal. read more

What a surprising and lovely indo-restaurant! If you want an exotic and new experience in Amsterdam, look no further. Celebrated Father's Day here and made my man's evening! We had a family style arrangement (dishes all in the middle and were shared w everyone). There really aren't dishes to select from menu as they make dishes based on what's in season, which makes it easy when you don't know what to order. This review is for the breakfast buffet. At most Hyatt hotels you will find an on-site restaurant. If you are a Hyatt program member you will also be familiar with the Regency Club rooms found at most Upper end Hyatt properties. In the Hyatt Regency Amsterdam the club room does not serve breakfast, instead visit Mama Makan for the sumptuous breakfast buffet. All the food here is delicious! All organic, locally sourced and farm fresh. Lots of menu choices as well as buffet choices. Service is first class too. Anna was wonderful, friendly and super attentive too! Arrived, and had a drink at the bar after which we went to the restaurant. A young lady said there couldn't be a reservation as they were closed for a group function. They had contacted all who held reservations and told them. Obviously except me and my guests who had arrived after a 14 hour flight! I pulled up my email reminder sent 8 hours earlier from The Fork booking engine reminding me of my booking. The booking had been confirmed 6 weeks in advance. She looked at it in confusion, then tossed her head and said she thinks that they don't deal with The Fork anymore!! When I said I thought the service and excuses were pathetic, and she should look for a solution, she told that was that, and " You can think what you like!" No management was available, and I think both the restaurant and the Hyatt hotel owe me a massive apology. In addition their staff training clearly needs attention. Then to top it all, ten minutes AFTER leaving, I received an email from The Fork informing me that the restaurant had just cancelled my reservation! So I was lied to as well as greatly inconvenienced. I hope everyone who reads this & considers booking a table here, do so with caution. They don't value customers, and are economic with the truth, and woefully short on service. read more

Our first night in Amsterdam we were so hungry and it was kinda late so we ended up eating at this restaurant inside Hyatt Regency where we are staying at. This place is nice. The ambiance is charming. This place would be great for a romantic date. The food is good and service was excellent. It's a bit pricey, but I feel like every fine dining in Europe is expensive. During our recent visit to Amsterdam, we were hosting a business associate from France for dinner and we were to have gone to Sama which comes with great reviews but unfortunately, we were too late. This place was close to our hotel and had decent reviews. So we went with it. Among four of us, we shared two meat and 1 vegetarian rice plates. The variety was amazing; the wine pairing was great. I had the tofu mushroom room which was a large portion and quite nice but a little bland.. the fish dish (baked cod I believe) was ok, but expect bones and picking them out constantly... but the wine and brownie was my fave at the end!! So by now you're probably aware that the Dutch don't have a really renowned cuisine. However, due to their worldly influence and colonization, they do do some pretty good Indonesian food, also with Surinamese. We wanted to hit a nice Indonesian place, one that specializes in rijsttafel, or otherwise known as a rice table. This is an assortment of Indonesian dishes for you to sample and get your fill. We went with a friend of my wife's and she had told us that usually with rijsttafel you're gonna need a day to recoup, because it's so much food. We didn't initially know this place was in the Hyatt, which immediately made me skeptical. We were seated right away, we had made a reservation though The Fork (get your Yums people). We ordered the vegan rijsttafel, as our friend was vegetarian but there wasn't a vegetarian option. We started out with a super bland mushroom noodle soup, and then that was followed up with some crispy things to be peanut sauce and green chili sauce. They were pretty good. Next was the first round which included Salad Buah ,Tempeh Sambal Goreng Kacang, and Tahu Isi Sayur. Nothing really jumped out as being spectacular, or even above average. Then came out another assortment of dishes. This included rice and turmeric rice. Again nothing was really stand out. For dessert there was a little mango cup and some pineapple ice cream. When it was all said and done...I was still hungry, and not really impressed. I don't know. I think you'd be better off eating at a local spot with little Indonesian women cooking in the kitchen. If you are looking for more of authentic rice table, go to Blauw - much better, especially after my trip to Indonesia, I think that flavours here were numb and not as strong as I expected. We were here for the hotel breakfast buffet, which was included in the room rate. It was perfectly OK, although service was very mixed-- one day they were quick and very helpful, the next it was like pulling teeth to get hot drinks. Looked at the evening menu as we had thought about trying Indonesian food while in Amsterdam, and the prices were significantly higher than other local spots, so we gave that a miss. We did manage to sample a few dishes in the hotel lounge, and they were tasty but probably not worth a huge effort. The space is lovely, well designed, with cute touches like artfully mis-matched plates. Overall, if you're staying in the Hyatt, this is a perfectly decent option. But I wouldn't make a special trip here, and you definitely will pay the international hotel premium. read more

The restaurant is a part of the Hyatt Regency hotel and as such offers breakfast, lunch and dinner. While staying at the Hyatt we ate there twice (breakfast & dinner). Staff was friendly and accommodating. Service was strangely slow, but not obnoxiously so. Food was good. It is expensive and there are a lot of other choices near by. We looked at it as a good fall-back choice for when we were too tired to go elsewhere. I think that description suits it perfectly. read more

The fruits were fresh and the waffles were great at breakfast. Selections were limited but the quality made up for the lack of choices. For dinner, the Nasi Goreng was good. It's a good choice for dinner if you are staying at the hotel, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there. read more

I stayed at the hotel and eat dinner last Tuesday night. July 11 2017, and order chicken. And the chicken has still blood and not well cooked. I was too hungry to complain and eat the Cooked part only but they didn't even apologize after I complained. The service sucks as well. Ate here twice during our stay, for breakfast and lunch. Service was great and staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast buffet had a great spread with fresh fruit and pastries daily. For lunch, the chicken sandwich was delicious. There is also a great list of handcrafted cocktails from the bar. Food is great... service is AWFUL. My friend and I ordered appetizers and a few sides. Our appetizers came in about 15 minutes but the rest of the food came an hour and a half later!!! Also, I have food allergies and the waitress assured me several times that everything I ordered was free from seafood but when i began serving myself the fried rice, i found shrimp in it.
