Marchfelderhof is truly an Austrian institution -- famous for its over-the-top decor, long-standing…read morehistory, and its popular white asparagus menu during spring (April to June). We came on a Thursday evening as a party of five and were seated promptly (with reservation).
As many others have noted, the ambiance is intricate, quirky, and packed with character. Every booth is a mini shrine to celebrity guests; ours was lined with plaques from dignitaries and ambassadors galore -- a conversation starter for sure.
While the setting is memorable, the food could use more attention. We tried the asparagus two ways (steamed and fried), asparagus with salmon, and asparagus risotto. The white asparagus itself was well-prepared, but the accompanying dishes fell short. The risotto was overly soft and lacked any discernible grains, the salmon was dry, and overall, the sides didn't match the quality of the star ingredient. Prices are high, though arguably fitting for the ambiance and service.
In short: a fun and unique night out with lots of flair, but I'd love to see the kitchen step up to match the setting.
