Stary Dom sets a high bar when it comes to an elegant dining. The space is on the more formal side but not fancy enough for cocktail attire; which I was so grateful for. I came directly from Gdansk in a delayed train so I rushed straight here to make my reservation. With my roller luggage and all. They thankfully had a convenient coat check where they were able to store my luggage. Now as for the food, wow on all fronts. I ordered the Chicken Soup, Marinated Herring, Steak Tartare, Lamb Shank and a Meringue Pie. I just had to try everything! And sure glad I did. I don't usually like lamb but this dish came highly recommended. Ive only liked lamb on a few occasions so it was a gamble and in this rare situation, I won. The gaminess of the lamb was very subtle and the flavor combined with the potato puree and marinade was delicious. The steak tartare was prepared table side and the chef asks if you want it normal, mild, or spicy. I opted for spicy which I felt wasn't any spice but nonetheless, a very tasty steak tartare. The marinated herring was so enjoyable as well. The fish was tender and the citrus profile of the sauce was a fantastic complement to the dish. The Chicken Soup was as good as chicken soup could be. Warm and savory. And finally the dessert. The fluffy meringue pie was very good as well but after a few bites, the sweetness got to me. What a wonderful place with wonderful ambience! So glad we came here. From start to finish the service was on par and great. We were treated with respect. For food we started with the beef tartar which was chopped, mixed & made in front of us. It was Delicious, tender and like nothing we had before. For the next app we had pierogi but one that had a veal in it and it was a southern Poland inspired one. It was MAGNIFICENT. I have had many types of pierogi but this one was one of the best and most tender delicous I have tried. We then shared the ribs which were so delicous and tender. The restaurant is self has a very good and relaxing ambient, service is polite and efficient, and prices are really fair given quantity and quality. As a starter I had a beef tarter which was really good and a big portion. Furthermore, it is very cool that they knife-cut it and prepare it in front of you. Unfortunately they didn't have Rabbit that was on the menu on they day that I visited therefore I went for the beef cheeks, it wasn't a bad alternative as meat was good and it was a huge portion. read more

Don't come here looking for creativity. This place serves traditional, simple and slightly bland, Polish cuisine. Nor is it the high class Polish cuisine which was influenced by French cooking. It's good comfort food - polish style. My big disappointment with the restaurant is that they rush you to finish and head out the door. Wow. I loved this place! The ambiance is fantastic, and really sets the stage for a wonderful evening. As we sat we were handed a shot of vodka! For an appetizer we ordered the beef tartare off a recommendation from a friend. My friend and I split the smallest portion and it was more than enough for both of us. So tasty. The best part is they prepare it tableside. Our chef that prepared it was friendly and made light conversation with us as he created the delicious plate. For our meal I ordered the pork knuckle which came with sauerkraut and potatoes as my side. The sauerkraut really stole the show. It was so incredible. The potatoes and pork were also very good. I would definitely recommend it to anyone. A few other plates at my table were ribs, periogis and soup. Everyone was full and happy. We ended the night with our waiter asking if we wanted dessert and bringing out the vodka carts. So much to choose from. Such a fun experience trying different vodkas. They specialize in classic Polish dishes that are hearty and carefully prepared. Friends and I were brought here by a Polish friend who now lives in London because the quality of the food and service are impeccable, and the decor has an understated elegance. Thankfully the noise level is reasonable and we could have a conversation without having to yell. The bartender knows how to properly mix cocktails, not always common in Warsaw. Their breads are excellent. This was my second time visiting Stary Dom, and it mirrored the first. Our wine, not particularly expensive, was decanted. My doctor wouldn't approve, but the Beef Tartare cannot be passed-up if this is up your alley. The filet is hand-chopped table side and seasoned to your taste. It is unforgettably good, the best I have ever enjoyed. After that I had roast chicken, while others enjoyed dishes like ribs or duck, but they would have sent me into a red meat coma. The desserts are decadent, obviously made in house, and generous. Stary Dom is a wonderful restaurant for old-school, traditional Polish food that is created by a chef and staff who know what they are doing. read more

We ordered traditional herring, tartar and veal kidneys in butter/wine/garlic reduction. All were outstanding. Reservations are highly recommended during the week. This place stays busy. If you are looking for a 5 star traditional Polish Restaurant then look no further than Stary Dom! The moment that you walk in the door you realize you are in for a wonderful culinary experience. The restaurant has such wonderful character with its exposed wood beams and decor, you instantly feel welcome upon entering. We sat in the upper level balcony overlooking the main room and started our experience with a glass of wine and a tray of complimentary bread, traditional lard spread, butter and pickles. I have only tried beef tartar once before and never ordered it myself but I have wanted to try it again since we entered Poland, Stary Dom is known for its Tartar so without hesitation I ordered it as my starter, it is prepared table side and the portion is quite large, it was delicious! My wife order the prawn starter and it was perfect. For my main I ordered the 1/2 duck with mashed potatoes on a bed of shredded beetroot with a very nice berry sauce. My wife ordered the Pork Knuckle on a bed of sauerkraut, both dishes were perfectly cooked, flavored and plated. For desert we enjoyed a wonderful pistachio meringue and a pot of tea each. Everything that we ate was amazing, the service was exceptional and the ambience was perfect! I would not change a thing at Start Dom and I hope to return very soon! On our way out the door we were each offered a bag with a pastry in it, I dont know if this is a normal occurrence, this morning we enjoyed our parting gift, it was some kind of yummy cream cheese pastry with bits of dried orange, a pleasant way to start the day and a great reminder of last nights wonderful culinary experience!! read more

Sorry to say so but one of the biggest disappointment in Warsaw gastronomy. Visiting this place many times before after about year of absence we decided to stop by for a dinner. The dinner was a disaster. Starting from being seated by pretty but negligent girl, to a being food poisoned at the end. Traditional polish pork breaded cutlett "schabowy" was smelly, sticky and served almost cold. Vomiting, diarrhea immediately after. Used to be perfect ribs, now only average, smaller in size, 50% hike on price. Chicken broth soup again served cold. I'm not recommending any more. All looks like arrogancy of management and complacency of owner (well known actor). Better try different places. Stay safe! read more

I was finishing my stay in Poland and on my last night, I wanted to organize a dinner with friends that were traveling with me. I sent out an invitation and got 15 responses - more than expected. I phoned the restaurant several times with updates and they were able to accommodate us! The location is a cab ride away from the airport or downtown area. The building is old, but has had many updates. The decor is vintage, much as you might expect from the restaurant's name. The menu was extensive, featuring many classic Polish items as well as items such as pork ribs. There is a beer and wine list as well. The server was able to keep up with our order. Food got delivered in a timely manner and was outstanding! Portion sizes were generous. My personal favorites were the traditional items - pierogi (they feature several different fillings) and golubki (stuffed cabbage). The beef tartar is prepared tableside and the preparation is as wonderful as the taste! The ribs were ordered by those less adventurous in our party and were enjoyed. The ambiance favored our large group. We were able to talk and enjoy the evening. Also, the meal prices were very reasonable (by US standards). We averaged less than $20 per person. read more

Hello my Yelpies, Once again it's that time of the year when I go abroad to different countries to try their new food. This time Poland is the way to go! Thank you Stary Dom for a wonderful experience of Authentic Polish food. The place was beautiful, it had such an authentic feeling right when you walk in, the decoration was off the chart. Parking here is a little crazy, but we were lucky enough to find parking to the right side of the restaurant. Big warning!! DO NOT ORDER ONE ENTREE PER PERSON, the portion was enormous especially after the soup and starter. First of course we have to try their traditional sausage soup called zurek, it was actually very delicious. Personally it is too salty for me but that's because I've been cutting salt in many months therefore; pretty much anything is too salty for me. But I've got to say that the sausage was delicious also the boiled egg was definitely the cherry on top of a delicious cake. As for starters we order the prawns, chicken kidney and chicken salad. The prawns was extremely delicious, the sauce was off the chart, I do suggest dipping the bread that it comes with into the sauce of the prawns to a pinch of deliciousness into the bread. As for the chicken kidney, I wouldn't suggest to order that, it was a little under cook so it gave my parents and I a feeling of gagging when you eat it. Maybe it would have been better if it wasn't so under cooked. For entree we order the "catch of the day" with pork feet. I definitely suggest everyone to try their pork feet, the meat falls right off the bone, it has a hint of sweetness and a delicious sauce and satay onions on the bottom for the pork. I was extremely happy with the order. As for the fish it wasn't anything too special, it was well cooked with a side of mash, green beans and some other different kind of vegetables. I was very happy with my dinner, the service was off the chart, everyone was extremely helpful and understanding. Overall, 5 stars for service, 4 stars for food and drinks, 5 stars for decoration and environment and 5 stars for cleanliness. We had an amazing dinner, starting with cepelinai and golabki, finished with lamb shank and beef cheeks. Oh yeah, and lots of zubrowka vodka. PHENOMENAL !! I've been avoiding Beef Tartar for a while now. Raw beef, really?? But a grandfatherly chef that makes it at your table gave me the gentle shove to try it...and I'm glad I did. Basically, it tastes like pate, but seeing it prepared in front of me, with the chef dumping heaping amounts of garlic and pepper still didn't adequately prepare me for the garlic high I got from this. And let's remember a cardinal rule here: There's no such thing as too much garlic. Ever. My main course was a basic pork tenderloin in mushroom gravy with halusky and red cabbage. The pork tenderloin was good. Tender and juicy and the mushrooms in the gravy tasted fresh. However, it wasn't the best I've ever had, still no complaints. I don't like halusky, but for those of you that do, it was made fine. Not that you can really screw it up. The cabbage was cut courser (i.e. not shredded) which is how I prefer it, so for you purists, there's that. I'd definitely go back, but there are some cheaper places around Warsaw that are just as good. You should come here though for the ambiance and Western-style service. read more
