It is fantastic to see that from day dot this place has been buzzing along in every corner for lunch, dinner and Sunday sessions with the locals. This place is a perfect "restopub," combination, delivering a blend of summery enclosed beer garden with dimly lit romantic booths and couches and a contemporary formal dining plus function area with linen napkins and table settings thank you very much. Although they don't take bookings, it is a perfect spot for group dining and drinking - if you are of the age where you like to take your drinks sitting down and having engaging conversations you can hear. We started our afternoon off in the front bar with a selection of your standard drinks and a great wine list to select from. I also hear they do $25 cocktail jugs that will be on my hit list next time. As a group of 6 there were plenty of seating options and I love that the lunch menu is available in all parts of the restopub. From dips and starters of charcuterie meats to burgers, poached salmon salads and the suckling pig special of the day, everyone was catered for (even the gluten free request in our group). I had the poached salmon salad and tried the suckling pig. The salad was simple with baby tots, asparagus and a creme fraiche dressing. I also thought there was supposed to be peas and dill in the salad that I couldn't spot/taste, but it didn't impact the meal too much and was a healthy, filling, fresh and good lunch. The suckling pig could have had a bit more marinade or flavouring added directly to the pig, but once you added the gravy, rosemary roasted veg and caramalised apples it was a perfectly put together meal. The only challenge was that they did seem a bit understaffed for how busy they were. After a bit of 'tude during ordering our meals arrived quickly but it was hard to flag down staff for things like extra cutlery, pepper and the bill. Not a biggy, but just worth noting that the formal dining area for lunch is not *that formal and fair enough really considering the very reasonable price of meals.

Pork bun with coleslaw and fries.

The awkward spaces that was the Oriental has been reworked to provide more open and light dining spaces with plenty of nooks for private gatherings. A group of us went for lunch and we were excited that we could sit .. anywhere! The actual dining room seemed to suit us best, with it's eclectic group of chairs and simple tables. The staff were friendly from the get go - from chefs photo bombing the roasting pig, table staff promptly bringing water and bread (unasked) and bar staff coping in heat with smiles. I had what was called "pulled pork buns" ($18) and what 4 of us received was one large bun and unpulled pork. Instead we receiving chopped pork, with quite a bit of fat - not at all to my liking - for $15. Not sure what happened there, but clearly something had, and at the least an explanation would have helped. The accompanying chips and coleslaw were terrific, and the other 4 meals were without a hitch. I've been back again for drinks and once again the staff were lovely, this time in 42 degrees. It can get pretty warm in there, even with the retractable roof (great idea), but we found a secret room that I'm now going to call our local club house.

    $15 parmy and cider

What a tasty parmy!!! I have visited the republic many times for function, but never just sat and enjoyed a meal. We actually won our dinner through a Facebook promo they were offering and was not disappointed. Monday nights are normally $15 snotty and a drink night. Hubby was super happy that he could select whatever tap beer he wanted and I enjoyed a cider. When our food came out I was so happy to see lots of melted cheese and a decent serving of chips. The salad on the side was a mini Caesar salad, much nicer that the regular lettuce and dressing combo at most pubs. I couldn't eat all my meal so good thing jinny polished that off for me. We will definitely be back!

I've been here a few times, but usually after we visited the bowling alley next door (or before hand if we wanted to grab a feed), however I decided to pay it a visit again when I was back in Adelaide, if only to check it out and to see if anything had really changed. Well, it seemed a lot trendier than I remember it when I was last here years ago, and they have a pretty large beer garden, which is both enclosed, and non-smoking. I can't say that I was overtly thrilled with the place, and it was pretty quiet, especially considering a number of other pubs that I had visited were packed. It's okay, but not necessarily one that I would be hurrying back to visit.

Today I had a nice lunch at the Republic. I decided to try the chicken and Rye from the new $12 super menu, with a side of sweet potato fries for $3. My guest the beer battered fish. We loved the meals. The lunch service was slow, however the wiser came out and let us know after 30minutes and apologies. The decor is bright, light and fresh. I really love the decor.

What used to be the Oriental Hotel has now become 'REPUBLIC' They've done a bit of a refit and revamp inside and in the beer garden that works very nicely, it has a great atmosphere, but like any pub, quite noisy when the crowds roll in.. Not the cheapest place around for drinks (for the non beer drinkers anyway) and the Bar Food is nothing but mediocre. I'm not sure what the Dinning Room experience is like, but the burger I had was very plain.

When I first heard that The Oriental was no longer and Republic had emerged, I always had it in my mind to try it out. Of course I turned to Yelp for advice and saw less than impressive reviews about the place but I wanted to know for sure myself. On arriving, I was surprised to find the place occupied by a handful of patrons even though it was a cold Tuesday night. Whilst the venue has been renovated into a relaxing feel good bar/ upmarket pub, the food was truly disappointing and prices were ridiculous. I ordered the Republican platter and my bf got the Republic burger. The dishes looked appetising but the flavour was just revolting and the food cold. It is a pity that they are not putting more focus on their food as it has the potential of becoming a top venue that will be popular with all clientele. This would a chill out catch up venue at best unless they start putting some effort into the menu. However I am glad that the steep prices have put off annoying 18 year old crowds out for a big night on a weeknight.

Restaurant service was very poor. Menu is very limited. We should have ordered from the pub menu which looked much better.

Ok, maybe I'd throw in the word comfort too, for this hotel had the most comfortable bed of my entire two week trip. Yup, I was as snug as a little joey in his mother's pouch. I swear this experience was just like taking a trip to a spa, and it had me crying, "Why can't my carpets at home be this awesome!" Finally, the location of this one rocks!! The overall feel was extremely comfortable and it was easy to just settle in and feel at home. The staff were great, especially at the bar. Bar/dining area opens to the sidewalk seating. In October the weather was pretty perfect. It took me a full day to understand the bartending staff. The Adelaide accent is a bit stronger than Melbourne or Sydney. But they are very patient with Americans who ask for everything to be repeated three times. I stayed four nights and had an excellent experience. Would recommend it and would stay here again.

Before any other Yelpers start waxing on about their opinion compared to mine, yes there are some nice places, but I think in the city the nicest places are the historical ones that have been made over - until you stay over at Mantra you can't compare. Big rooms, very lush, plush and highly relaxing. Of course you pay a high price, but compared to other capital cities the price is relatively good; it is high for Adelaide. Which I did! The Tap Inn had become old and staid and lacking atmosphere save for their Tuesday quiz nights which were great fun. Bring on The Jungle! The new theme throughout is wonderful with palm trees, a massive gorilla, a reasonably sized elephant, vines, tunnels and surprises around every corner. The owners have done a great job in pre-creating the atmos before you've even had your first drink! Talking of which, there's an amazing array of beers, wines and champagnes available, and at prices that won't cause you to 'go ape'. Each of the bars is well stocked and they have a wonderful range of beer on tap as well as the traditional imports. The food is nothing short of spectacular! Their new Argentinian rotisserie is something to behold, and the meat that comes from it is a melt-in-the-mouth experience to delight every palate! There are over 80 'swords' that gently turn on the spit, cooking an incredible feast of meats and seafood. The Head Chef Praveen is a genius! The meat is provided by their own in-house butcher Michael, who is 'on display' as he cuts the various offerings. The menu is comprehensive, exciting and again, well priced. I even went there for Christmas Lunch which was an all you can eat delight. At $95 per head I expected a great deal - and I wasn't disappointed!! The staff are unbelievably friendly in each of their fantastic bars. They go out of their way to help and serve you with a constant smile on their faces. They are everywhere too - no need to wait an hour to be served here! My favourite of all the bars is the Rooftop. On a balmy evening it's open to the skies and stars with plenty of seating available. You can even have a game of Jungle Bocce if you're pissed enough! Just as an added bonus - if you're desperate for the loo - why use the stairs to get there when you can slide down one of the fun jungle slides! The Crafty Monkey bar on the ground floor has free fresh nuts (I know, right?), and is where you can enjoy their Happy Hour! All in all, I'm deeply impressed with the new Kent Town Hotel. I've spent many wonderful evenings there and intend to spend many more. Finally Adelaide has a new and exciting venue to crow about so let's hope that the powers that be ensure that it stays fresh. Well done to Paul, Kendel and all concerned!
