Maylands hotel is beautiful on the eye, both inside and out, and a friend brought us here for a pre-Christmas 'lunch'. I will apologise again to the staff for the group of 16 hooligans who moved the tables around to suit ourselves and popped party poppers all.over.everything.
To their credit, the staff were stoic. One had a little moment of panic with himself when he realised the tables now made one grand long table and he had to work out the numbers, but he kept his cool. Another poor sod came with a garbage bag at the end for all the excess from the poppers and Christmas crackers. For very little content, those crackers make a mess.
Our behaviour would have suited the pub area, but not the much classier Philton's Restaurant, an affair of mahogany wood and elegantly upholstered chairs. Personally, I was all for moving us into the pub, because the food in there was $3 cheaper per dish compared to the 'restaurant menu' - identical, but for the prices. Next time I'll eat my beer battered barra in on the couches.
Though I'm not sure about a next time - the food was okay, but nothing special, and not worth what you paid for it. A slightly stodgy batter and some rather sad chips didn't make this a great meal. My partner had teh beef burger, which I sampled, and we agreed on the quality of the patty - thick, juicy meat - but that the rest was average. The bun looked like something you'd get at any fast-food chain, and the quality of the bacon and the veges wasn't great.
I was eyeing off the chocolate pudding as I saw it go past to another table, but at $9.90 I wasn't impressed by the size, and they were already trying to pack up our table.
The wine list at the front bar is short, but has a little of everything. The cider list is disappointing.
If I'm in the area, I might come back for the $14 daily special plus a pint, but I wouldn't return to the restaurant when I can get better pub grub elsewhere, and for less.
One useful thing to note however is that the kitchen is open until 10pm every night. read more
