Blacksmith's Inn - Lovely wooden tables carved with their name! I want some!

A typical "local" outer suburbs pub…read more But it's your grandpas local and him and all of his friends like to have a pot or two while trying their luck in the weekly meat raffle. I visited on a Friday night as part of a bridal party rehearsal dinner - the wedding was very close by the following day. We booked well in advance for a table of 15 and we really need not have bothered, the rest of the dining room had maybe 3 other occupied tables. Food was as you'd expect after taking a look around the empty dining room. My steak was over cooked and drowned in an overly sweet smoky bbq sauce even though sauce was requested on the side. This gets a 3 because the cover band playing in the front bar were actually pretty awesome and entertaining. Our group was by far the youngest clientele this local had seen in a long time, we had an oldie come up and ask us to pose in a photo with him that's how novel we were. Can't say I'll be back in a hurry.

In fact, I was wondering if the entire town had suddenly, all at once, decided to come down here for a meal. Maybe that I was case, I guess that is one of those mysteries that I will never solve. However, despite having to weave my way through countless people to get the the bar, I still really liked this place, especially the rural setting just ten minutes drive out from Salisbury. The beer garden is especially nice, as is the view over the vineyards out the back.

I have eaten here about 4 years ago and enjoyed the meal, but for me this place is all about the British pub atmosphere and beer. As far up North East road as you can go before hitting the hills; it is as much an English pub as any you'll visit in London. London Pride, Old Speckled Hen, Hobgoblin and Newcastle Brown Ale can all be bought in imperial pints. The staff and owner Michael all pour a mean pint and won't leave you waiting at the bar while they polish glasses or have a chat. The owner Michael has also done some serious renovations while keeping the original charm of the place intact. I remember the first time I visited feeling crammed in, with the low ceilings but with the new toilets added and the space being refurbished to extend the dining area, the interior feels a lot bigger and more welcoming. The ceiling is still low and beams have coasters from English beers and pubs, so it's retained its charm. Also, Michael has built a great car park and awesome outdoor area for drinking and listening to some local bands. Perfect on a summer night.

In fact, what's really cool about this place is that they have proper English beers on tap. Okay, I have to admit that I honestly am not a fan of English beers, namely because I just don't like the way they are made (they tend to taste like flat soft drink), but it is still cool that they have them available, no doubt because it makes me feel like I'm actually in England. Yeah, this place is awesome. Oh, and they have a beer garden as well.

Shared plates with my sister. We had the small plates, grilled octopus and salad of prawns, then the red snapper with grilled baby fennel. The dessert which I'm usually too full to get was a must! The goat curd mousse with quince, pomegranate and pistachio crumble was the best dessert I've had in a long time. I would go there just for that. It's definitely a shareable size. But we had a good time selecting a sparking Barossa wine to start with and a great Eden Valley white to have with the meal. Our meal was not memorable. I had the fish of the day, but can't remember what it was. No complaints, but no raves. The special food course for us was dessert: Girolle of Tête de Moine with gingerbread. As much as I'm in to cheeses, I don't think I've ever had shaved cheese on my dessert. Our waitress made an issue of how expensive this cheese is. We had it, enjoyed it, but didn't go crazy for it. The "experience" was the fun. To quote Wikipedia, "the cheese is carefully scraped with a knife to produce thin shavings, which is said to help develop the odour and flavour by allowing oxygen to reach more of the surface." It did have great flavor. Then there was our waitress. She was exceptional. She did everything perfect. Apparently she's relatively new, but damn, she knew how to do everything right. Danny Meyer would love to have her in New York. It was shocking, giving Australia's well-known history of indifferent wait staff. She really added to the evening.

It was quite busy being a Sunday, but we never felt rushed or it wasnt too loud in the dining room. Having a carpet floor instead of hardwood makes it a more pleasant experience too. Service was friendly and helpful. Answered menu questions without hesitation. Lunch time menu was quite full for choice as well and the wines list. Hahing actual table service was a nice change instead of lining up at the bar as we seem to be doing more and more these day. Feeling quite peckish, the smells from the kitchen didn't disappoint. My partner had smokey ribs n wings with pull apart melt n your mouth brisket. A feast for the senses and stomach!!! I had a succulent chicken schnitzel. Typical pub food but surprising at how majy people can get it so wrong. Well not here!!! Cooked perfect.. A golden crust surrounded a juicy piece of chicken. Definitely recommend this place. We ordered steak _well done, no blood_ and had to send it back 3 times. Each time it came out raw with blood running across the plate. Staff shrugged and said "steak is cooked with blood coming out, it's natural". Hygiene is non-existent - 0/10. The waitress had her fingers all over the food when she brought the plate out. After all the back-and-forth to the kitchen, we both got sick. It genuinely felt like something was done to the food. The staff stand around gossiping about customers loud enough for everyone to hear. When we raised the issues politely, we were treated like rubbish. To top it off, I received an aggressive, insulting email from the manager/owner saying we are no longer welcome, just for complaining about raw food and poor hygiene. *Food*: Undercooked, unsafe *Service*: Rude, unprofessional, gossipy *Hygiene*: Disgusting - staff touching food *Management*: Hostile and unaccountable Avoid at all costs. Made us sick and then banned us for speaking up.
