The Belgians were a bright bunch. Getting the monks to make their beer, putting mayonnaise on their fries and eating mussels. Odd combinations of flavours that all combine to make for a very fulfilling afternoon at Belgian Beer Cafe. When you do manage to get served at Belgian Beer Cafe, I always enjoy conversing with the staff about the beer I want to try or what my taste buds are calling for because you certainly find out more about beer than you ever wanted to know. The beers here really are a meal in themself. They aren't normally much larger than your standard bottle but they are thick, creamy and filling. The food in both the bistro and restaurant is not going to leave you with change but it is very well cooked and flavoured. From a simple dips platter to a crispy skinned salmon in the most rich butter sauce I have always left needing to be rolled out of the place. Meanwhile, chips with mayo is a mandatory part of every meal here. Kind of like the KFC secret spice something is put in the mayo at this place that makes the chips very "moorish." If it's a sunny day it is always worth a sit out in the beer garden, if it is a hot day though you are going to be strapped to keep cool as this place is not air-conditioned! read more

25/12/2011 I remember coming here to celebrate Graduation from University with some awesome Adelaide friends, buying and sharing drinks with beautiful sexy Aussie women, getting numbers, having fun, playing games, having plenty of laughs, eating a meal at a large wooden table, a nice evening breeze outside, watching random shows on their TV which is attached to the top of the wall, chatting to a random Criminal Lawyer originally from England who was drinking all by himself after work, and ordering lots of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks from the friendly bartenders. Great times. Or in Adelaide Aussie slang (also known as Strine), I was: Ordering rounds of schooners and sharing pints with good mates. If you are in desperate need of a piss, you have to walk to the dunny which is around their back wall. This is a pub where you have to come with a group of your best mates. It's more fun. The Belgian Cafe was a disappointing experience. The 1kg mussels were far from 1kg (unless the pot was included), and the "pomme frites" were much too thick and way off the mark. These fries are served with plain mayonnaise, not aioli. For a beer cafe, I expected a much larger on tap list. The bottled beer was grossly overpriced and the service was also slow. I celebrated my 22nd birthday here last year, and have to say the food is amazing. I have to agree precisely with what Michelle has said - think awesome pub meals. I'm not really a beer drinker but most of my friends are, making this the perfect spot with its super long list of imported beers. At the risk of being exiled from my own party, I shamefully conformed and went with the strawberry-flavoured beer. (Yeah, you heard me.) The outdoor area is the best. It's relaxed, open, spacious, shady, and what I like most about it is that it doesn't face Rundle St and is nicely tucked away behind the premises. What's that - you like beer? Great! And what's this I hear - you love import beer? Well, you're about to get very excited my friend, 'cos the Beligum Beer Cafe is the place for you. I've always loved coming to this bar. Not only do they have a wide selection of imported beers from Belgium on tap, but the bartenders know exactly what they're doing. I'm sure most of you have at least once witnessed a bartender incompetently pouring a beer without tipping the glass whilst it endlessly flows out and holds nothing but head - only to watch them tip the whole thing out and try again. There's nothing more frustrating than wanting to jump behind the bar to do it yourself, and to teach the bartender a thing or two while you're at it. But the guys at the Belgium are pros; you won't see that sort of debauchery going on when you order your drinks. Beer is taken very seriously at this establishment, and I for one am glad. In terms of food, the muscles and clams look extremely appealing. A fan-favourite is the French fries, seasoned to perfection and accompanied with mayonnaise. For a simple lunch, you can't go wrong with the croquet-monsieur. The general atmosphere is incredibly warm and jovial, and the architecture of the building and the surrounding brickwork almost make it feel like you're somewhere in Europe. Waitresses would rather hang out at the kitchen counter chatting to the cooks or browsing their phone than walk to their tables to take an order from vustomers. I waited 15mins to be asked for my order in a room of just one other table. At 15 min mark I walked out to the shock and annoyance of the waitress. Thats rich. Poor service, the staff always keep their customers waiting. Have to wait for minutes to place the order and it takes more than 15 minutes to get the change which is totally unacceptable. I won't recommend the steak, I ordered medium rare steak and what I got was medium well and the staff was reluctant to fix the problem and showed long face. Is that the way to treat your customers in the service industry? I would say this is the most disappointing experience I've ever had in Adelaide. read more

I have been goaded into writing a review for BBC.....and, to redress the balance I am giving it 5-stars! In answer to those of you who say it is over-priced. You know what, you're right! How does it feel being right? Content? Justified? It doesn't matter though. Go somewhere else and buy me a bottle of Trappistes Rochefort "10" (yes they weigh in at around $18 here) and give me a nice patio to enjoy it on in a convenient yet not overly crowded location. Yes, I know many places (mostly in France, Switzerland and, yes, Belgium) where you can find all of this at a better price. In fact I used to have a sweet deal of someone who would drive to Belgium and bring back crates of the good stuff and I'd pay 35 euros for a crate of this (my favourite) beer. But we are in Adelaide, we're yelping about Adelaide....and if you want a good Belgian beer with a pretty authentic Belgian style bar this is the place. To all the people who think this place is awesome, good for you. For those of you who think it's too expensive, well, is it really? If you just want to pound a few pints of pale and stumble down hindley street king hitting everyone who glances in your direction it's probably not the place to start your night. But if you want to treat yourself to a couple of really tasty beers, enjoy some delicious moules (they do a pretty awesome job of these too!) and have an authentic experience then BBC is a destination to consider. ...and as for me, it isn't my "go to" pub, but it's unique to Adelaide and the many visitors I've taken there have never been disappointed. Absolutely fantastic!! Stumbled upon this cute little pub/restaurant/beer garden, on a little stroll through he CBD! Such a friendly atmosphere, good drinks (don't even care about prices TBH) and a fantastic surround! Live music has started I could stay here all night. I went to the Belgian Beer Cafe Oostende for a 20th High School Reunion. The staff were fantastic, friendly, outgoing, helpful and made the night more enjoyable especially Michael. The guy at the bar was relaxed, joked and joined in the conversation with us and made the experience fun. We were in the upstairs function area - spacious and with a balcony! The cocktail food was delicious and well presented by the staff with a friendly chat and explanation of what we were about to eat! All in all the event at the Belgian Beer Cafe Oostende was great and I would recommend it to people who want to hold a function there in the future. read more

Big cups! Huge! I'm a gentleman of duality. The Italian in me HATES tradition, as I've had to see the Italian side of my family engage in it their entire lives, to their discredit and ruin. But I create and engage in my own traditions. One of those is to ask for some Leffe. Normal. Big cup. Whenever I'm at the Belgium Beer Cafe. It's a great beer, and you don't have to keep travelling back and forth. The big cup lasts you a while. (No, I won't stop calling it the big cup. That's another one of my traditions.) This place is usually full to bursting. It's often very hard to find a table indoors, but you ought to find one outdoors without any problems. Finding your way through the maze of patrons to the bar or toilet from your seat and back can be troublesome, but it's hard to dock points off a place for its popularity. If nothing else, the Belgium Beer Cafe is a great starting point. You start with some normal Leffe, in a big cup, and you know you're in for a good night, no matter where you go afterwards. Unless you to The Woolshed (for whatever reason). Then, even the big cup can't help you. read more

The Belgium Beer Bar is best attended fairly early on in the evening, while it still handles a decent sized crowd. It is often a popular place for birthday drinks, or alternatively, the meeting place when kicking off an extended sized night out. The cosy atmosphere attached to its indoor setting is very reminiscent to pubs of its sort found in Eastern Europe, and as the name suggests in Belgium (u-duh). I quite like its decor, although I feel as though it is better to locate here for drinks in the winter rather than the summer. Having said this, there is ample outdoor seating which suits a summer night just fine. Although there is a restaurant area, unfortunately I have never dined here and therefore cannot comment on the cuisine. I do know however that the Belgium Beer Bar is open for both lunch and dinner, and I am guessing the food wouldn't be far from standard pub type favourites. As expected the beer stems from both local and international sources, and a comprehensive wine list helps makes your selection stick for any innuendo. read more

Beer is a favourite pastime of mine. Now, if you're anything like me you'll see the name Belgian and link it to Belgium and therefore naturally assume that this is a German restaurant. Or I could just be slightly uneducated, but anyhow - welcome to France! I love french inspired food, it's really beautiful, buttery and leaves you with a few extra kilometers to do on the treadmill; do no bring the calorie counter ladies. There is a complete beer list of which you may sample a few in order to make the right decision, the beers are also matched to items on the menu which is really helpful when it's busy. The Belgian Beer cafe is cozy and warm inside for the winter, it's really quite comforting, like a big warm hug. Then in the summer time the outdoor area is really nice to relax in the sunshine nursing one (or 5) of the crazy beers they have on tap. read more

The crowd had a nice vibe and it was a really nice mix of ages. and I loved that they ran a few Chimay specials on the larger bottle. that and the food made a cool winter night into a Belgium night for me. Sorry guys, you have seriously slipped. The prices have gone sky high, the selection of beer reduced and the food has dropped in quality. Sort yourselves out and just remember that lots of other bars are branching into Belgian beers, so charging what you do for a small glass is a bit extraordinary. I haven't been for years but was sadly disappointed. Yes sitting outside on a balmy night drinking Belgium beer is nice but the food I had was horrible. Just under $30 for a kilo of mussels in a weak broth that was meant to have to tomato and chili but was just large uncooked chunks of both chucked on top. C'mon, mussels are the easiest (and also cheapest) thing in the world to cook well. Served with limp chips and mayo with a skin on it. I won't eat there again. read more

My friend and I went for 50% off mussel this Monday. The experience is okay. The place is not crowded at all during 7-9. But it seemed that there's only one waitress serving for the whole indoor restaurant, so u know, we kept waiting. I tried the Paddestoel mussel. The sauce tastes great and the mussels are very fresh. It's a quite strong and salty for me, but with bitter sparkling lemon soda, everything is wonderful. However, the mussels are a little bit undercooked, almost half of the mussels weren't open, took me quite a while to open them. The place is pretty pricey for students, we two had a main duck dish (not enough for guys), a pot of 50% off mussel (enough for girls) and 2 soda. It costs us 56 bucks. Oh, so disappointed with the food experience I had here last week. I have such fond memories of the mussels here, so insisted on going before the end of our trip. Now for the price and the quality... There are so many great seafood places in Adelaide, so for the cost, I'd take my $30 main meal money and head elsewhere for fish and chips or a seafood platter. Perhaps I've been spoiled now in Vancouver and Seattle where you get great flavours and quality for around $15-$18. My companions broth was salty and hot, that's it. It tasted like mussel water with some chili's thrown in. Mine fared a little better, being the classic mix of white wine and butter. But butter makes everything better. And the beer prices, well $17 for a 'pint' (well more like a baby pint) of imported beer is a bit steep in most people's opinion I would think. Yes, it's an import and we're going for the experience... but really. I'm sure their rent is pretty high in this location though, so fair enough. What saves it for me is the patio. I would go again for a cider on tap and a seat in the sun with a few mates. $8 a drink is a bit more palatable, and they do have good fries. read more

I had booked here and initially been seated by wait staff, after half an hour still hadn't been offered drinks. Got up and left. Aside from that the bar menu is over priced for what you get and for that matter the beer is expensive too, but you expect that with imported beers.
