This place looks like one of those hotels that you book out for a wedding reception, or at least the beer garden - it was gorgeous. Well, not all of the pub is like that, since the bar wasn't as great as some that I have been to, though they do have some pretty decent beers available, which sort of made me forget all about that. The Edinburgh Hotel has stunning outdoor seating, a lovely and varied menu and helpful staff. Situated on Main Street in Mitcham, the hotel consists of many small bars and rooms, all labeled with large black signs. When I went to there on a Saturday afternoon, I was lucky enough to experience their outdoor seating in the beer garden. The beer garden is located at the northern edge of the hotel/pub. There are many large trees to take shade under and a range of barrels to sit at and enjoy a drink. For the beer garden, they had a window in the main building where you could order drinks. The drinks were well priced. One thing that I found pretty cool was that there was a person collecting beer glasses from tables once people were done. He even wore a shirt that said "glassy" on it. What was even more impressive than the humour with the shirt was the fact that he could carry around 40 glasses stacked up and still open the door to go inside. Some serious talent there! Although I did not end up selecting from their exquisite snack and meal menu for the beer garden, as the event I went to was catered, I managed to have a quick browse of the menu. The meals were around $20 or so, which is pretty good and they all sounded great. I will have to try some of them, the next time I go. As for the food at the catered event, I felt it was quite innovative, favoursome and well presented. The first item I had were sundried tomato and thyme pinwheels. It was a simple bite sized appetizer however the thyme and the sundried tomato paste went well together. The flatbread that held the ingredients together was also not too loose meaning that it could easily be eaten without a plate or napkin. The second appetizer was a Brie and Quince cracker. The watercracker had a thin slice of Brie at the base followed by a small rectangular prism of quince paste. It was a very simple yet effective appetizer. It is a shame I didn't get a photo of that one before I sent it on a one-way journey to my stomach. Appetizer the third was a samosa. It was filled with diced vegetables and was served hot. For this one, I thought ahead and grabbed a napkin and waited a minute for them to cool down. The same could not be said for the other people at the table who endured went straight in and found it to be quite hot indeed. The samosa was served with what appeared to be a chive sauce. The sauce was tasty and complemented the flavor of the samosa and it's spiced vegetable contents quite well. The fourth appetizer was a prawn wrapped in a fancy tempura batter. I am not a big seafood lover however I broke of the tip of the batter and found it to be quite nice. Appetizer number 5 were sausage rolls and mini pasties. And the best part was, they looked like they were made at the hotel and not bought from a supermarket! The worst part was, they ran out by the time they got to me cause most people took two of them (a pastie and a sausage roll each). The sixth and final appetizer was a thin strip of crumbed fish served with tartare sauce. I had a nice sized piece which unfortunately broke when I dipped it in the tartare sauce, however I was fortunately able to savage it. The batter was nice and not too oily. It was well crumbed and the fish was fresh. If these appetizers are anything like the food on the menu, then I will definitely be going back. My wife and I were quite disappointed. We dine out a lot in similar places around the southern suburbs, so we have a good feeling for what to expect, in terms of meals, seating, and service. I have never felt the need to complain at any other place. To start with, we reserved a table well in advance, and were seated next to the toilets. The only option was to sit out in the "no service" area, which we took. My wife's fish was a small portion, with minimal sides. My "pork cutlets" were tiny little batter-fried pork fingers, barely warm, plonked on a salad saturated with some oversweetened dressing. The Ed's website looks great, but in terms of value for money, we would rate it as the worst of its type in the southern suburbs. Fortunately, there are plenty of other options! read more

What a little gem of a hotel. My partner has always dragged me along to this hotel so that he could trawl through the treasures that are in the cellar. With some fantastic prices on what he describes as awesome wines, he loves checking out the bargins. Although I love a good drop or 10, I must admit that looking up and down every isle isn't my idea of fun and if it's not yours then, GO INSIDE. It would be hard to find a better beer garden. Enclosed for your pleasure, this garden is seriously awesome. The drinks prices are reasonable, the wine list is outstanding and if you need to organise an event there, I can honestly say from personal experience that the staff are OUTSTANDING. You can take anybody here and have a good time. Nanna? Sure. Neighbour? Why not. Baby nephew? Absolutely. Boyfriend? Yeah! The Ed has such a nice buzzy outdoor area you can hang with anyone and have a grand old time. They have an excellent wine list and it's a great place for functions and family dinners. It bugs me that this place isn't closer to my house, I wish we could pick it up and move it into the city so we didn't have to worry about cars and taxi's and the like. I haven't eaten here in a while and they change the menu depending on the season, but we have always left telling the staff how amazing everything was. I have been the the Ed a few times and have always enjoyed it. Most recently I was there for dinner. The beer garden is just gorgeous but it was far too miserable and wet on my most recent visit to enjoy. But it is so lovely in summer. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. Drinks were ordered and received in an extremely timely fashion. I had the beef bourguignon pie. Which was perfect on a winter day. Others in my part ordered the entree tacos, oysters Kirkpatrick, and the kangaroo and thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Highly recommend a visit to the Ed. read more

I can't believe that I haven't yet written a review of The Ed! I am here nearly every week, and really love this chilled out hotel in the heart of Mitcham. It always feels like you've found a secret hideaway when you step into the central beer garden, complete with wine barrel cocktail tables and trellises covered in climbing plants. My favourite thing to do at The Ed is to gather a group of girls for a long, boozy lunch on a warm afternoon where we feast on multiple dip platters (always a crowd favourite), salads, chips, and tasting platters. These lunches usually stretch into the evening as we enjoy crisp, cold whites and each other's company. In addition to the garden, the hotel boasts several function rooms, a semi-fancy restaurant, a classic pub room, and a gaming area. If you are over 20, I'd advise avoiding the place on Tuesday nights- this is when the "kids" come out in full force. read more

Yeah - that was pretty good - well, the food at least.. The outdoor eating area at The Ed is perfect for a warm night - Spring, Summer and even Autumn help this venue to shine. The menu features some tasty options - it took me ages to decide what I wanted! Finally I settled on the kangaroo - served with sweet potato mash and parsnip 'chips' and I think my choice was pretty damned good! The tasty roo was cooked perfectly - medium rare as I had ordered. The flavours were a great match - I wanted to lick my plate clean! I also tasted a bit of the special goat curry and it was damned good! On a busy Saturday night, the service was somewhat impersonal to begin with but staff definitely tried their best to accommodate for our group that consisted of over thirty people, however even after making a booking, they still did not allocate enough seats. It was a long time before anyone came to take an order from our table and this just kinda annoyed me. I've been going to the ed for a good few years now, mainly for their pretty good parmy deal; but I have a problem! The problem is the staff, particularly in the restaurant area. I was there for a family lunch, we were a largish group of about 8 ...but we had booked, we weren't loud or obnoxious, we had no kids running around, nobody had strange requests, we were just there for lunch. When we arrived (on time if not early) we were informed that they were booked out and to order quickly (it could have been mentioned in an informative "let me let you in on a hot tip" style... buuuuut it wasn't). We were given menus and one drinks menu... Genius. We ordered one bottle of wine and a few single glasses, the wine came out warm. The waitress only asked one end of the table about drinks, so didn't actually order a drink at this point, we ended up going to the bar. The staff all seemed completely disinterested, plonking our meals down in front of us after yelling from the head of the table. I have no problem with pub food, and as such pub service. But with these price points that's clearly not what the ed are aiming for, seriously you need to up your game with your wait staff. The food was good, but nothing I would run back for. My advice would be a mid week parmy, there are far superior places with the same price point for restaurant eating. read more

We dined at the historic Edinburgh Hotel or The Ed as it likes to be known today. We'd been run off our feet all day and as such, had "forgotten" to have lunch so at 5pm, we were ravenously hungry. Walking into the The Ed you immediately feel relaxed. Outside there was a biting, frosty cold but inside The Ed, it was toasty warm with dim lighting. We didn't think dinner service would start as early as 5pm so we sat in the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. I asked the bar staff what time the dining area opened for dinner and was told 5.30pm. Half an hour? That's nothing. Just enough time to sip a nice wine. At 5.30pm we walked into the restaurant. It really is a nice dining room. Lots of heating, mood lighting and comfortable seating just make you feel at home and make you want to linger a little - especially when the weather is so awful outside. The views outside are really special too - although by the time we got in there, it was already quite dark outside but I can imagine with all that nice greenery out there, that it would be a really pretty place to sit during the day, protected by the elements. So at 5.40pm I went to the counter to get a menu and a slightly flustered waitress said that dinner service didn't start until 6pm and implied that the bar staff often get this information wrong as sometimes it really does start at 5.30pm but not on a Monday. That was ok, we were enjoying our surroundings. Another lovely waitress came and brought us the menu's to look through and some water while we waited. She also asked if there was anything else we wanted and she kindly got us some wedges from the bar menu to tide us over until dinner started. Their menu is really varied and there were lots of things on there I could have ordered but hubby and I ended up both ordering from their specials menu. He went for the Char grilled 400g T-Bone served with a mini Caesar salad and chips and I had the pasta special which was Fettuccini with chili prawns, asparagus, Spanish onions, peas, garlic and baby spinach in a napolitana sauce. The food looked wonderful when it came to the table. Our hunger may have had an input on that one. The chips were a little cold but the mini caesar was really well done with crispy bread and that lovely caesar dressing. You could tell they had used quality ingredients. The meat had a nice chargrill taste throughout and was cooked and seasoned well - lovely and tender. I was pretty happy with how my pasta looked when it came to the table too. First of all it was big - tick - and it was pasta!! I love pasta. There were LOTS of prawns in this pasta. They definitely didn't skimp on that, and the prawns were juicy but they were not chili prawns. I was actually a bit nervous about this dish because I don't normally eat chili but thought I'd take a chance - Even though I preferred it without the chili, it's disappointing when the menu says something and it's not on your plate. Similarly, I didn't see any peas on there or baby spinach or asparagus - only beans and prawns. There were baby tomatoes which really lacked taste and this dish probably would have been better without them but it was ok - really it was, and again I have to say we had the nicest waitress who made sure we were ok and happy with how the evening was going. We had a nice time at The Ed. It is a very interesting place historically and you can read more about that from their website. I would definitely recommend a visit here even if only for a drink - their wine menu is quite extensive. read more

I hadn't been here in over eight years and came for a friend's birthday. It had changed a fair bit since then. They still have a lovely grape vine decorated beer garden with plenty of seating. Probably more than inside. They still have the usual front and sports bars for the blokes but also a cafe and function room as well, which made it seem a bit more classy for the ladies. We had platter food which was quite nice. A selection of canapes, mini pizzas, meatballs, lamb skewers and deep fried foods. The staff were helpful and friendly, the clientele a bit annoying, but that's what you get on a weekend night. All in all a good pub. Ideale for a function or summer night. read more

This place gets a 3 stars for food, but 5 stars for the beer garden/atmosphere/have a fun night there. I've been here a few times but I've only eaten there twice. The food wasn't terrible, just what you'd expect if you weren't expecting much. I ordered a chicken parmigiana which was done well, the chicken was moist and there was enough topping. The side salads are good, my boyfriend got a Cesar side salad which was very palatable and I had a standard toss salad which I was equally happy with. Where the food fell short was with the chips and steak. The chips were quite ordinary, they weren't seasoned much and were quite dry. The steak which was specifically ordered medium was served well done. At the end of the night I was left satisfied by the food but not particularly excited by it. Also pro tip: if you are just after a schnitty order it from the pub section, it's a lot cheaper and served exactly the same. read more

Right - So, now I live just down the road from the Ed Cellars & I am ashamed of the first review. But we all make mistakes right? Right? Well, the Ed is a regular place for me now. The bottle shop is extensive with a huge selection of wine and a really knowledgable staff. Want to feel like a wine connoisseur? Head down into their actual 'cellar'. Grange Hermitage anyone? I know what that is now - and it is expensive. I often go there and ask for advice - so far, they have never been wrong. What is great about the Ed Hotel, is the incredible contrast from room to room. The Restaurant is upper class with gorgeous food and looks nice enough to hold a wedding reception. This is right next to the beer garden that has such a relaxed atmosphere that it feels like you are in a less carnival'ey' Garden of Unearthly Delights. This area gets really busy during summer & rightly so - perfect for cider. Then there is the Front Bar. Relaxed, full of local workers often still in their work gear having a beer with their mates, gambling on the horses and winning meat trays. Food in here is the standard schnitzels with great toppings (including a mexican one with nachos in it), burgers & salads - the difference is - it is all made by the same chefs in their upmarket restaurant but the prices are incredibly lower in the Front Bar. Old traditions stand here too - free nibbles for the regulars, a meat raffle, a bingo machine, pool & all day bread rolls. This part of the pub was kept - and rightly so - for the blokey regulars. The staff all know their name. I love this place now - they have an app that you can download & for every check in or photo etc. you get points which you can then trade for drinks. I went to The Ed for the first time the other night and it was quite uneventful, but then, it was a Monday so I'm not going to hold it against them. It's a really nice venue and I spent the evening perched on a bar stool outside, sipping champagne and musing over the fake grass sprawled in the middle of the beer garden around a feature fountain that isn't splaying any magical streams of water. hey, its a conversation starter. Unfortunately I cant comment on the food because I got there when the kitchen was closed, this was at 9pm. however the wine list is quite comprehensive and I was pleased to see that the shelves weren't lacking in spirits and liqueurs. I'm a connoisseur: not an alcoholic, but If I were, I could quite happily indulge myself here...ahem. So definitely give it a try, the service was fast and the staff were clued up on their product. if you're looking for a laid back evening in the working week then The Edinburgh Hotel is a good choice. read more

Vegan review: simple, don't bother!! First restaurant that I've been to as a vegan where I was told that I should've ordered over the phone the day before. The only suggestions I got were a the long list of foods I couldn't eat. Thank goodness for lettuce and tomato in a bowl, that was as imaginative as the chef was willing to go. Even a tiny country pub are happy to throw together a pasta sauce or a veganised hamburger on the fly. I pride myself on not being a fussy vegan, I'll pretty much eat what's offered or suggested, but when you come up against an inflexible menu and chef, I can't help but be disappointed. Food is ok but nothing to rave about - just good cafe meals. Service is friendly and attentive. But its the atmosphere that makes the place. I've loved the Ed for a long time - from weddings, bad dates, to wakes, new year's, christmas parties, family gatherings and birthdays ... I think I've had (or shared) all important life events here over the years! It's all about the outdoor area as far as I am concerned. Our favourite spot is along the back fence under the pergola (the inside cafe gets noisy). There's plenty of space in the garden area so its a super kid friendly venue as they can stretch out their legs and make friends at the fountain. The only thing that makes me sad (and for which I deduct a star) is the fact that they've replaced the grass with astroturf, which looks like a manky green plastic shag pile carpet. Thankfully the other greenery seems to be real, and there's some lovely vines that really frame the area nicely. There's a few above-and-beyond touches to the standard pub grub experience here. The food and service is spot on - they offer table service if you book ahead. The specials are printed out and placed on the table to save you running up to the blackboard. Carb lovers can rejoice - complimentary bread rolls come out before the meals. I ordered the pumpkin, zucchini and chickpea burger with caramelised onion and baby spinach for $20 and it was vegie burger perfection (plan to see if I can find a similar recipe on google!). The other meals at the table (caesar salad, pasta special and schnitzel) were all nicely presented, generously proportioned and (I'm told) tasted great. We washed it all down with pints of James Squire ale, and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. I'm not sure there's a better choice anywhere in Adels if you are after a long lazy Sunday lunch. read more

Went to the Cellars for Gin tasting. Was a great evening. Haven't had Gin before and now that i have tried it i will definitely have it more often. Got a gin and tonic on arrival then went down to the cellar and leaned a lot about Gin's and got to taste 2 type's of gin's the Sabre and the Cutlass Gin, also at the end had a very nice cocktail called Gimlet which i will be goggling to make myself. read more

I've had a couple good meals here and the atmosphere can be good on a sunny afternoon but the wait is always long, the food is expensive and they don't do a good schnitzel. Just went there Tuesday 14 th Feb Valentines Day 6.00pm. The first thing no greeting have you got a booking in that tone too. We had booked sat on the veranda great spot and view. We waited and waited apparently where we sat NO table service but the tables behind did How Ridiculous!! No Atmosphere No Music No candle just nothing!! I thought we were at a funneral couldn't wait to leave!! The food was excellent. We have eaten here before staff good etc. The team has changed they look very miserable. I thought u would have done a little special thing for tonight. A flower a chocolate or something!! For your couples customers! Maybe not. Since The Ed's located smack bang in the middle of suburbia and about 4 high schools, it has a dedicated cohort of locals that love and admire the place. It's a great pub, with a beautiful beer garden and the versatility to handle just about any group, be they 18 year old revellers, football teams, families or corporate groups. In the Adelaidean tradition they run a solid pint and parmie (chicken parmigiana) deal that pulls a large crowd every week. Every night has its own traditional groups. Tuesday is for the youth and Thursday draws a consistently older crowd. Summer afternoons are a great time to enjoy The Ed as well, with sails and trees creating shade in the grassy beer garden. The Ed Bottle Shop isn't attached to the hotel itself and functions autonomously across the parking lot. They've won prizes for outstanding selections of beer and wine as well as the expertise to effectively comment on and sell their range. If you head in, have a chat with the boys about what you're after and they'll do their best to help you. I used to work in a bottle shop and working at The Ed's was an envied position. read more

The only reason that this gets three stars and not 5 is that the food is so shockingly hit and miss! The vibe is great, the beer garden the best in Adelaide, the wine list amazing, the stock of craft beer improving but the food can be so dependable that it's almost not worth going to eat. So, Mr Ed, fix your food! It's been off for about 10 years and you need to do something about it. I've seen many a menu revamp, but none of them have actually hit the mark properly. That said, the lamb burger I had was tasty, if not a little over-rosemaried. The chips had good crunch, the garlic mustard aioli almost punched my husband out with its potency and the staff were friendly, mostly. Whoever the fella with the dreads is must have been having a bad day and the glassy kid wanted to be ANYWHERE but at work. I love going to the Ed for beers and chilling, but the food needs a'fixin. read more

I used to quite like it there, as the beer garden is lovely, and the food was nice. That was until we had a function there, and the service was abysmal. There was supposed to be a staff member on the bar in our function room, but they kept nicking off somewhere so if guests wanted a drink, they had to go into the main bar area & line up. We were promised waiting staff to offer guests food, but they breezed in and dumped platters on the nearest table. I wrote an email to the functions manager about it, but the reply was unapologetic and full of crap excuses like "there was a bar person there" (I was right there, and there wasn't) and "well your guests weren't very hungry" about the non-waiter service. After I replied that I was really disappointed, I was offered a $50 voucher. Still no "Sorry our service was non/existent" I declined the voucher, as there was no way we were coming back. We haven't.
