We ordered steak _well done, no blood_ and had to send it back 3 times. Each time it came out raw with blood running across the plate. Staff shrugged and said "steak is cooked with blood coming out, it's natural". Hygiene is non-existent - 0/10. The waitress had her fingers all over the food when she brought the plate out. After all the back-and-forth to the kitchen, we both got sick. It genuinely felt like something was done to the food. The staff stand around gossiping about customers loud enough for everyone to hear. When we raised the issues politely, we were treated like rubbish. To top it off, I received an aggressive, insulting email from the manager/owner saying we are no longer welcome, just for complaining about raw food and poor hygiene. *Food*: Undercooked, unsafe *Service*: Rude, unprofessional, gossipy *Hygiene*: Disgusting - staff touching food *Management*: Hostile and unaccountable Avoid at all costs. Made us sick and then banned us for speaking up.

Anyway, they had a nice beer on tap, which I certainly did appreciate, and the service wasn't too bad either. They also have quite a decent sized beer garden, but we ended up spending most of our time in the front bar, which was quiet, and really nice as well.

However, as I was wandering through the city one afternoon with my friends, finishing off the pubs that needed to be finished off, we came upon this place. Actually, since we hadn't had any lunch we decided to stop off here for a meal, which basically meant that I landed up with a schnitzel. Yeah, it was quite nice, and there were also some decent beers on tap. The pub itself isn't that huge, but it is one of those pubs that of have been to on an infrequent basis. Oh, they also have a bottle shop just around the side.

I used to live a couple of blocks away from The Kings (previously the Kings Head) and must say I didn't go there overly often. I have been a few times of late, due to friends parties and the odd chance that I just happened to be around the area, and I must say I like it more than I used to. I think the crowd has a lot to do with my enjoyment of a bar, and it is certainly less pretentious than it used to be. The interior is pretty nice, with an overall rustic feel with some polished elements that lift the place up a notch or two. The Front bar is my favourite area (which is normal for me), and out the front is a really funky booth style design that kicks on a warm summer night. They have also made some kegs into tables (see the piccy) which really works. Right I'll put my interior designer silk scarf away for the time being and pop open a stubby. The beer selection is just how my fellow Yelper, Tegan H, describes....pretty darn spiffy! I tried a few myself, the last time I was sitting on the corner stool, but ended up with sticking with a couple of tried and true drops! I always feel that any pub where you are comfortable having a drink is handy in my book, but be warned that some of the brewskis (and spirits) can be a little costly (ATM's are dangerous!).

Ok we weren't going to test the beer garden - it was 8 degrees - but just letting you know there are plenty of spots to sit depending on your mood. Pork belly, fish fingers looking more like generous fists, a chicken pie and franks dogs were our choices - and we all felt the meals were generous, different & delicious. Wed night is a Franks Dogs and beer special night & there's also mystery beer and mulled wine on the menu - an adventure in every glass! I'll be back for the beer garden in the warmer months - well worth a visit.

A great friend of mine had some going-away drinks here a few months ago and I was surprised to find a really pleasant pub - a little scruffy but in a sweet way. Whoever is in charge has done a great job making the most of the beat-up old premises with a collection of beautiful old lamps and comfy furniture. Plus the drinks are pretty cheap too. I felt something in the air - as though this place was just on the verge of becoming Adelaide's new hipster haunt. A bit of investigation of their Facebook page seems to reveal just that - an intention to draw people in with micro-brewery beers, ciders, DJ nights and live music. I haven't of much going on yet, but I'd definitely be willing to come back here - nice lighting does wonders.

It's hard to pin down the ambiance as the areas of the Hotel differ; all in a good way. The "BAAA" is a great example of rural Australian bars: happy and inviting with live bands often playing. Meanwhile, it's eclectic and relaxed in the penny bar area, and the beer garden has a family friendly vibe. The standout for me on this visit was the dining area. It's relaxed but more restaurant than pub-like; in a good way. The service was very good, the staff friendly and prompt. But the best thing was the food. As long as you are happy to go beyond today's typical Australia pub food, and instead try some gourmet style traditional pub food. I had the slow cooked lamb shoulder with vegetables and light jus, while my partner went for the Mediterranean Chicken salad. Both were excellent, but the lamb was next level. Despite being well satisfied we could not resist the sticky date pudding. And we weee both happy we did not. Great experience all-round. The prices are higher than pub meals, but for that you get gourmet food that you will remember for a long time. Worth the little extra for sure.

I'd love to come back again on my way home from workies :) Nothing much more I can add to what Karen F had commented, both Adam & Evi are great hosts. I have only been here for a wine and cocktail so far but this place really adds to the quirky little shops, bakeries and cafes that are popping up on KWR! Fast and friendly service, combined with some unique concoctions and names of cocktails means you will spend most of your time there deciding which cocktail you'll get when you next return. The Elephant Espress is on my list to try next time. If you are like my other half though and think cocktail is for cordial drinkers then never fear - the wine and beer list is for quoffers and swirlers alike. These guys take their booze seriously and I am definitely signing up for one of their monthly "tasting flight masterclasses" in the future.
