I rented a car from Smartlease for 6 months while being a college student in the bay area. For a…read morebusiness that is geared towards "helping out" young professionals and students (people who are often new to car rentals, car ownership, and car insurance), I'm surprised at the consequences I faced for this lease. I'm deeply disappointed in this experience: one that was marketed as low-frills and economical and how Mohamad was polite and reasonable until the time for the car return came. I understand the pressure of our current economy, but cannot condone taking advantage and emotionally manipulating the exact group of customers that would vulnerable to this. The cars at Smartlease are old and delicate and any minor scuffs or scratches that inevitably happen during your lease are not considered "normal wear and tear." If you are looking to rent from Smartlease, you'd hope you can keep the condition of the car 100% perfect or you would have to pay thousands of dollars in damages out-of-pocket (that amount to over 25% of the rental car's value) or pay deductibles through your insurance which significantly increases your premium for years. In my case, I got trapped in Clause 19 of the lease agreement: "If you have not had the repairs made before the Vehicle is returned at the scheduled end of this lease, you will pay the estimated costs of such repairs, even if the repairs are not made prior to Holder's sale of the Vehicle." I had returned the car already, so Mohamad proxied for me at an auto shop (he told me last minute that there were repairs to be made). He gave me the quote that the auto shop deemed, a quote that was much higher than if I had looked to repair these myself (especially since for some damages, I wouldn't have repaired if it were my own car). Then when I asked for a receipt from the auto shop to make sure my money was actually going towards repairing the car, he sent me Clause 19, making clear that it wouldn't be. Instead, the money would be pocketed by Smartlease. This money is equivalent to the price to rent this particular car for 5 more months, nearly as long as I had the car for. As a student, it was difficult for me to find the funds to pay for the upcharged cost and it caused me a great deal of worry. I felt absolutely exploited. In the final communications with him about the repairs, he gaslighted me and would often say that he's been in this industry for a long time, so these processes are industry standard. He used his position of power, knowing I am a student and have little experience, though I can research and have parents and friends who have more experience with cars to validate his claims. When I asked if I could go to the auto shop with him, so we could speak in person and I could be part of the conversation with the auto shop, he called my request weird and unheard of. He said that it's difficult for a first-timer to speak to an auto shop, implying that I don't know how to speak to an auto shop, then threatened that if I wanted to meet him at the auto shop, he doesn't want to come; instead, I would have to handle all of this by myself. But at that time, I was flying home in a week since school had ended and I still needed a proxy. Ultimately, he did not speak to me kindly. The amount of money I have spent for this lease in total could have bought a used car of similar value to the car I had rented. But if I had chosen to buy a used car, I could have resold it.  If you still want to make a short term car lease, I would strongly recommend to avoid Smartlease and the financial, emotional, and temporal cost and search somewhere else.

However, I have a huge problem with the fleet of cars he has. 1. The fleet is quite frankly, very old and outdated. I was offered two cars by Steve. The first one and the one I stuck with was a 2000 Toyota Camry, pretty close to base model. It had just a hair under 200,000 miles, and I believe every exterior panel had some damage to it. The headlights were hazed up. The check engine light was on. The height adjustment knob for the drivers seat was broken, and so the seat was stuck in a position slightly lower than what I was comfortable with. The windshield wipers made annoying noise when running. The brakes squeaked and felt rough when coming to a stop. The AC made a horrible noise whenever turned on (thank god it's November). I was also offered what appeared to be a 1999 Toyota Corolla. Literally the only automatic/power feature offered on the car was an automatic transmission. Everything else was manual or crank. Now I'm all for a cheap econo car when I'm just trying to get a cheap rental, but at the least, I would've expected something from 2004 or newer and not as beat up. The only nice thing about the Camry I rented is that it started up and drove without problems. But beyond that, I did not enjoy driving the Camry at all. I honestly don't know if he was giving me the cheapest cars he had because I'm 18, or if his entire fleet is like that. But I was disappointed that I paid for a car that was in worse condition than my own. The only thing Steve has going for versus other places is price. He is pretty significantly cheaper than Enterprise and Hertz. There's no underage fees, and no security hold on your credit card. For 5 days, it was about $160 to rent the shitbox Camry. Compare that to the almost $560 it cost to rent a Toyota Venza for a week with Flightcar (including the security hold), and it seems like a huge bargain. But then again, the Venza I rented was a lot bigger, nicer, smoother, and had very few problems. And if I'm paying to drive a car that isn't mine, I'll pay extra for the car that's newer and has less issues.

The cars are new, clean, awesome with a full tank of gas. On top of it they got delivered to your door which is amazing (no more painful quests to find hidden getaround cars). The service does its job, but the way they handled the end of my contract ruined the experience, and the app gave me problems the whole time. The good part: when it works, it is convenient. Insurance is included, and for a quick one-day trip it is an easy way to get a car. Things to know before you join. Long trips get expensive because some mileage is included, but on longer trips you go over the limit and pay extra per mile, so it can cost more than a normal rental. The app is not reliable, and more than half the time something did not work when I tried to log the car's condition at pickup, so I had to message support to do it by hand, and sometimes they had to fix my account manually. Guaranteed delivery costs extra. Usually the car is there or brought to you, but not always, and if you want it delivered every time, you pay more. Payments are not transparent either. At first, I got no receipts showing the charges, including extras like tolls, and even now there is no way to see them in the app. The real problem was canceling. I had already stopped using the car because I got my own, and I had paid for that month as usual. In the middle of that month, I contacted them to cancel. That is when they told me about a 30-day notice period, which means they will also charge me for the next month. So I will have paid for two months and used the car in neither. The rule is in the FAQ, but the FAQ is confusing, and the information is not where you would expect it. They could have read the situation and shown some flexibility over an honest misunderstanding, but they chose to enforce the extra charge instead. After that, I tried to sort it out and could not reach anyone. Every call before had been answered, but this time no one answered, and no one called me back. Then I sent a final email with a fair offer: pay this month, close the contract now, and drop the second month. They did not reply. They just ignored me. Bottom line: I was a patient customer for months and never complained about the app problems. But when I tried to leave for a good reason, they are charging me an extra month for a car I had already stopped using, and then they ignored me. In my opinion, this is not a fair or good-faith way to treat a long-term customer. The service can be useful if your needs are simple, but go in knowing the cancellation terms and the extra costs.
