This was a super fun experience. It's in this really neat location and you take an elevator to the restaurant. It has a great view. Once we were inside they took our coats and checked our allergies and then the experience began. They have nonalcoholic and wine pairing beverages. The food was beautifully displaced and was a great mix of flavors and textures. Staff were super nice, everyone was willing to help us. This was nice and relaxing and fun. I would recommend. Top notch dining experience in Houthavens. The restaurant is built on top of a repurposed broadcast communications tower that was brought from the North Sea. Reminds me of the Eiffel Tower but with the views of Paris replaced with views of the IJ River. Lots of big windows and great views. Youri and Ben were excellent hosts as they explained each dish and drink pairing. They were charming, funny, attentive without hovering. We went with the 7 course dinner which included two dishes we wanted. Can describe the dishes but they change their menu every couple of months. And I went with the half-pour drink pairing so I could keep my wits about me. Each dish was an interesting combination of ingredients, generally presented in a simple, modern way and with an occasional surprising twist. read more

A unique place to dine, an old platform, an old radio station. Very cool place to be on top. Didn't expect a restaurant to be there. We went there for one of the nights and we took their five course dinner with wine/beer pairing. The service was good, but slow. I do not know if this is a European thing. I have been to many Michellen star restaurants and typically a 8-9 courses are done in ~3 hours. I was expecting the same here, we were there for 4.5 hour. we were in at 8pm and we were done at 12:30am. That to me is a looong! The food was good, I was not blown away. read more

One of the stops of our self-created and aelf-guided Van der Valk tour of Amsterdam. If you aren't familiar with the show, look it up. The old version is hard to find and a bit dated, but worth the watch. The new version (season 2 just wrapped up here in the US) is certainly worth watching. That said, there are some places seen in the show we added to our list for our trip - this is one of them. Cool facility with a great history that other reviewers have described very well - basically it was built and used in the late '60s as a short-lived pirate TV&Radio broadcasting platform in the North Sea. The broadcasting was quickly shut down and the platform was moved to several locations - finally ending up in Amsterdam where a number of years later in 2011 it was put to use as a restaurant/bar and offices. It's current location is on the edge of an up and coming area of Amsterdam. It's location on the water offers excellent views of the Nieuwe Houthaven, the docklands, sunsets, and ship traffic including the ferries. The uniqueness of the facility and the location make this a place well worth visiting. And that is what their main advertising focuses on. For a dining experience, it may not live up to the expectations. We found the food, cocktails, and service to be good but not great. The prices were high for the quality - something that may be expected for a restaurant that advertises itself more based on the building, location, and views. And when you consider the cost of the taxi ride to get there, the whole experience can add up quite a bit. The location is not really walk-able for a nice dinner (the nearest tram/train station is 1km away) and difficult to bike to. So driving is really the only option. I'm glad we went, though not sure I would go back again. read more

Very very very cool venue and that's really where it ends. I would highly recommend getting a drink here and that's about it. The food wasn't very good and it was overpriced. The staff was 100% focused on the table next to us and couldn't answer our questions we had about the menu. I'm not sure if our server was new or not, but I didn't feel like we were asking outlandish questions. The view was fun and we did get a nice table in the corner of the dining room. read more

This is one of the coolest restaurants I've been to in Amsterdam. With breathtaking views and also breathtaking staircases, the place is full of history and good food - of course. For those who visit, you might wonder how and why they built a restaurant up there (I know I did!) and there is actually a pretty interesting story behind it. History cut short, in the 60's there was only one television channel in The Netherlands (can you imagine that?) and the government did not allow commercial television, so they broadcasted from the sea! This island was built in the north sea, and was known back then as the pirate broadcasting station for the Radio and TV Noordzee, until the army shut it down. After that, the artificial island was moved and used for many purposes, but in 2006 was relocated to Amsterdam and caught the attention of bussiness men Nick van Loon (from a prestigious family in The Netherlands - they even have their own museum and I've wrote a review on it) and Hilly Engels. They thought "why not make it a restaurant?" (obviously that's what you think when you see an old pirate tv broadcast station) and saved it from demolition at the time and transformed it into a restaurant that opened in 2011. Enough about that, you wanna know about the food, right? The food is ok but nothing to brag home about. It's all about the location for me. I would recommend going for lunch as they can get too busy at dinner time and service can be slow. During sunny and warmer days you can sit outside or on the terrace to eat or have drinks (which I highly recommend you do), that has a great view of the IJ (river). read more

First- without a nod from the locals we would never have known about this place, a 20 euro cab ride from our central city hotel. We were instructed to cab by our local friends who are committed bike riders. So, if you are also bike people this place isn't a stretch. If not the combo of public transportation options isn't very effective, that said, just do it while it's still in an interesting neighborhood of relatively "raw" shoreline with work boats and similar stuff- very interesting. The multi- story work platform is tall but no worries they have an elevator to the restaurant at the top and it's plenty sturdy have lived it's previous life as the north sea location of a unlicensed TV station. The views are terrific and the food was lovely, in our case fish with greens. Not overcooked generally my bitch about fish, so nicely cooked and presented. The service could have been a little more attentive but actually just fine. Prices were reasonable. We both liked it and will go back next trip. And they will call you a cab, again probably a 45 minutes walk to our central city hotel, not that much fun after a big meal and a bottle of wine. And another reason to go is the opportunity to see a much less developed part of the city which, according to our cab drive is slated for some expensive development. So just do it while you can before they upscale and polish the place. read more

REM-eiland is in a 3 story off shore platform once located in the Ijmeer. The platform was dismantled, brought to shore and rebuilt and as of July 2011 houses Restaurant REM-eiland. I ate there once, in October, and was quite impressed. The food is fantastic: French cafe fare presented very prettily and tasted great. Its a 3 course menu for 28.50 euro, which is pretty reasonable in my book. I went with 5 people and everyone was pleased with what they got. The restaurant and the view are just amazing, and there is one particularly thoughtful touch. The dining room is open, with a lot of metal and class and I was worried that it would be loud, but happily the designers added sound buffers on the ceiling so even though the place was packed with diners we could still hear each other talk. Very nice. I think the best time to go would be on some summer night when the sun is up late and you can watch all the activity in the harbor. I hope to do that when it gets warm! Two things to note: first, when you make a reservation (which is a must) ask for a table with a window, and two, it is a bit of a walk from the nearest bus/tram stop, so if its a rainy night you may want to consider driving your car or taxi. read more

The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because the venue itself is very cool. A modernized oil rig looking over the harbor with a really nice interior. We sat at the bar while waiting for a reservation, the bartender literally didn't know how to make me a jack and coke, he had to have the manager come pour the shot... Sat down, ordered the large shellfish platter, when it finally came it was not good. The oysters and everything had been sitting out for a while, kind of rubbery and definitely not fresh... super disappointing, and expensive. *This food is NOT French by the way, it is a Dutch take on French food! Not even close! Got our meals over an hour later, my fiance was ok with his, but my steak and side were actually cold, I'm not sure if they even have heat lamps in the kitchen. Finally I had to flag someone down to take it back, couldnt find our server anywhere. **They brought the original steak plate back to me after they MICROWAVED it in the kitchen. This is NOT a cheap place! It was totally ridiculous, by the time I got my plate back we had been seated for 2 hours and my fiance was already done. At the end we expressed our disappointment to our server (she finally came back to give us our bill), she told us to come back in 6 months because they will probably have a different cook.. proceeded to charge us full price for everything. One of the places I wanted to try for a very long time. Wonderful location with a nice view of the city and t'IJ. What could go wrong went wrong when we went there for dinner. Starter and desert was nicely presented and really good of taste, but the time between the courses was extremely long! We had to wait approx. 45 min. till an hour and the waiters didn't offer us any new drinks when our glasses were empty. It was really hard to get (eye) contact with the waiters and it felt like they didn't care about the business. I'm unable to judge about my main course because I received a really rare steak instead of a medium rare which I had ordered. It was not possible to cut through the meat because the waiter also forgot the switch the cutlery. This restaurant with such a clueless and poorly instructed staff shouldn't deserve to be on such a nice place. I won't come here again and definitely not recommend others to go here for dinner. read more

On August 25, 1964 an former oil rig located in the North Sea became a broadcasting platform for a piracy channel for the first Dutch commercial television channel called TV Noordzee. The channel had millions of viewers, sold advertising, and was shut down in December 17, 1964 by the Marines and police due to new laws. A piracy radio station also operated and is located on the other side of the river. The rig also known as an island was moved to the hip new revitalized area of Amsterdam and has been transformed into a very unique restaurant. The chefs, wait staff, and managers are super-cool and very friendly. Such a wonderful meal and dining experience. Local beers and seasonal ingredients. The construction is worth while visiting. Getting there already feels like being on an adventure. It's not an old oil rig as mentioned earlier. It used to be an offshore commercial broadcasting facility in the days broadcasting rights on Dutch turf were exclusively for the government. Views from the rig's panorama deck are great. And all the outside stairs are accessible to visitors too. Great fun climbing those. We went on a Saturday evening, the busiest night to go out in Amsterdam, but to our surprise most of the tables were empty... Later we learned why. Prices on the menu seemed to be reasonable, until we were presented the food. It is very mediocre. All of a sudden prices seemed to be much to high. The fruit de mer main course looked like a tiny starter and in taste was very dull. The season's dish -wild boar- was partly okay and partly chewy. The mashed potatoes tasted like that powder product from Knorr. All disappointing. Except for the wines. Those are nice... Then the staff. We were serviced by a couple of students that were very friendly but new, so they could not answer our simplest questions like what cheeses were on the cheese platter... And when we discovered a miscalculation on the tab in our disadvantage, a more senior waiter even got irritated with us, urged us to come with him(!) to see his manager, the most rude woman we ever met! She admitted the miscalculation but kept arguing for a compromise in stead of a correction! In the rudest tonality too! Incredible! So. Our sincere advice: Only go to REM Eiland for the views and a drink! Seriously. read more

A memorable meal in Amsterdam! We were able to eat outside on the top level. The metal steps seemed a bit intimidating, but were part of the experience. There is an elevator that you can use to get most of the way up, but use the step unless you're frightened by heights. The food was good - nothing exceptional - but nothing bad. This is a really cool restaurant. The view is amazing. We went for lunch (we had dinner reservations but plans changed) the burger was cooked well, fries were very good. My daughter had the 2course lunch which was delicious, steak cooked to perfection. Husband had the avocado and egg sandwich which he liked a lot. I'm sure the dinner menu is more extensive, but we had a lovely lunch. It's not the easiest to get to, we took the bus and walked. But we called an Uber to take us to a tram stop on the way back.
