This is one of the coolest restaurants I've been to in Amsterdam. With breathtaking views and also breathtaking staircases, the place is full of history and good food - of course. For those who visit, you might wonder how and why they built a restaurant up there (I know I did!) and there is actually a pretty interesting story behind it. History cut short, in the 60's there was only one television channel in The Netherlands (can you imagine that?) and the government did not allow commercial television, so they broadcasted from the sea! This island was built in the north sea, and was known back then as the pirate broadcasting station for the Radio and TV Noordzee, until the army shut it down. After that, the artificial island was moved and used for many purposes, but in 2006 was relocated to Amsterdam and caught the attention of bussiness men Nick van Loon (from a prestigious family in The Netherlands - they even have their own museum and I've wrote a review on it) and Hilly Engels. They thought "why not make it a restaurant?" (obviously that's what you think when you see an old pirate tv broadcast station) and saved it from demolition at the time and transformed it into a restaurant that opened in 2011. Enough about that, you wanna know about the food, right? The food is ok but nothing to brag home about. It's all about the location for me. I would recommend going for lunch as they can get too busy at dinner time and service can be slow. During sunny and warmer days you can sit outside or on the terrace to eat or have drinks (which I highly recommend you do), that has a great view of the IJ (river).

Rem eiland has a bit of history and one of a kind. The building is unique and to get to the restaurant either take the stairs or elevator. View from restaurant are good, if you book the right table. What i liked: - good price /quality - friendly service The reason for an extra star is that the staff brought out a special for the birthday within our group without us having to ask for it. Well appreciated.

I love Rem Eiland for the unique beast she is. Great food, not exceptional, and unlimited views deliver a unique evening. The ambience when you enter is tough due to the layout, but the main diningroom is energetic. Bring your camera as mother nature is on display.

Just had drinks here, but wow what a cool place it is from a ambiance and architectural perspective. Walking up to the building and being in the building, you are always aware that you are in this structure on the water, and I think it's worth the experience.

What an extremely cool place with an amazing history. We got last minute reservations with no problem, and the service and food were really good. I highly recommend checking this place out if you like something a little different.

Love; love; this super-cool restaurant. This is a grest place for lunch with a beautiful view. You can also have dinner, drinks, or meetings with large groups. The service is super-friendly and the food is fresh and delicious. Great music. On August 25, 1964 an former oil rig located in the North Sea became a broadcasting platform for a piracy channel for the first Dutch commercial television channel called TV Noordzee. The channel had millions of viewers, sold advertising, and was shut down in December 17, 1964 by the Marines and police due to new laws. A piracy radio station also operated and is located on the other side of the river. The rig also known as an island was moved to the hip new revitalized area of Amsterdam and has been transformed into a very unique restaurant. The chefs, wait staff, and managers are super-cool and very friendly. Such a wonderful meal and dining experience. Local beers and seasonal ingredients. I loved the mustard soup (mosterdsoep) and the seasonal tarte au citron with a dash of cress...deconstructed and amazing!!! www.remeiland.com or info@remeiland.com

I got a lemon drink (verrrry tarty/ sweet for my taste, I added some water) and an Almond biscuit (Gevulde Koek) for €1.50,. Food wise I got a bacon and hard-boiled egg roll - there must have been at least x2 eggs in there! So really generous filing, and an excellent strip of bacon but only one, wished there was more and just right amount of butter. Loved each bite and it was a bargain at €2!! Because it was a three hour train ride back to Brussels, yep I took the slow train, I also got a cheese sandwich for €1.95. I was quite impressed by both freshness and quality - each sandwich had date and time it was made and I could see the people in the back making the food fresh. So totally recommend and wouldn't hesitate to buy from here again, when next need to grab something quickly.

They serve coffee and a variety of pastries as well as ready made sandwiches that the locals were picking up for lunch. There is no place within the restaurant to sit-there are some bench areas a little further away where we saw people eating. It is a perfect place for a quick cup of coffee and a croissant-we had just come from Schipol and needed a little boost. I would recommend and return.

The sandwiches are moderate in size -- good for a quick lunch or big snack. Don't let the line discourage you. It probably took us about 15 minutes to order and 15 minutes to get our sandwiches. Since we already had made plans to eat elsewhere, we made sure to come back before we left the city. It's only five minutes from my hotel anyways! Come to find out, the line wasn't as huge as it would seem. They were holding people outside because the inside was actually ridiculously warm. So they were holding people outside to minimize the amount of people inside. The wait was actually less than 10 minutes. The first thing I noted was...wow, everything is so cheap here! I'm sure that's a partially a function of them basically being cash only (no Visa, MasterCard, American Express accepted, so I don't know what would be accepted), but also because it's Amsterdam and everything is way cheaper here in general. Ordered the Cortona (€4.90), Calzone Margherita (€2.80), Pizza with Grilled Vegetables (€2.80), Ricotta Cannoli (€2.80), and a Large Classic Tiramisu (€2.80). Goes without saying that everything was fire. That Cortona sandwich was so well-made and tasty! If I was ordering something like this back in the U.S., it would easily be 3x the price. Staff here are super friendly! They keep the line churning real quickly despite the high demand. And despite how many orders they take in, they move very quickly. I have honestly no clue how I have never come here before considering the amount of times I have been to Amsterdam. It's definitely going to be one of those spots that I will keep coming back to, that's for sure.
