Flawless. Café De Klepel is one of the top restaurant destinations in AMS, and with good cause. Although predominantly a wine bar - the wine list is so extensive you'll have a hard time going through in its entirely - the tasting menu and à la carte bar snacks are fastidiously curated and expertly prepared. Each server has an almost encyclopedic knowledge or the local food and are equally on par with any sommelier. Although the restaurant space is small and a bit tight, it feels comfortable and inviting. The servers know how to use the space to maximize the dining experience. They also have a few tables outside - so when the weather is permitting, you can enjoy al fresco dining. Cozy restaurant right in the heart of the city! We sat at the bar and relied on the waiter for wine recommendations. We enjoyed their selections and devoured the charcuterie board. Zero stars. I have two words for this establishment: racist bastards. After finding positive reviews on Yelp and Google, my sister and I decided to make this our first stop in Amsterdam. Little did we know we'd be slapped in the face upon entry. With only six customers in sight, the employees told us they are fully booked for dinner. The restaurant was practically empty. I asked to make reservations for Monday. She pretended to peruse her book and said that they are fully booked. I then asked to make reservations for Tuesday and was told that they are fully booked for the whole week. The snotty employees clearly did not want to serve us. By the way, English is my primary language and I speak it perfectly, so there wasn't a language barrier. These racist bastards should know that what goes around comes around. TLDR: racist against Asians. Update: After reading a fellow Yelper's review, it appears that this establishment does not cater to Americans and/or people who do not speak Dutch. Fantastic meal, welcoming experience. From the moment we arrived, we were well taken care of, from our coats being taken to our glasses being filled with the perfect wine to match the course being served. Unpretentious and homey, Cafe de Klepel nevertheless serves excellent food with serious attention paid to wine. (Without being snooty about it.) We started with a plate of charcuterie, then were served a small piece of red snapper on a bed of fresh peas, white asparagus, and sea lavender, all in a light beurre blanc sauce. That was followed by a ribeye (perfectly rare) with potatoes, mushrooms, greens, and a grilled endive. We finished by sharing a slice of apple-almond tart. What a great place. Our AirBNB host suggested this for our anniversary dinner. The place did not disappoint! We had the Charcuterie board for a starter. The meats were great. We then were served Mackerel that was served with pickled vegetables. It was great. Then off to a white fish of some sort served with cooked veggies, mashed potatoes and a yummy sauce. We are coming to Amsterdam in late May and are staying at a very nice hotel. Our hotel provided us with a list of restaurant recommendations in the area ahead of time. I love wine and specifically picked this restaurant from the list to celebrate our anniversary. I submitted a reservation request on their website in English and said how excited we were to come there. I was then told that even though it was 6 weeks away that day was booked. Not just the time I asked for, but the entire day. Every day I asked for they were 'completely booked' and don't take walk ins. I found this very suspicious because it's 6 weeks away and most reviews I read people made reservations only a few days ahead. I was very disappointed and felt like there was more to it. My husband then sent them a reservation request the next day in Dutch asking for the same reservation and they immediately confirmed the reservation for him! The only thing I can conclude from this is that I was turned away because I am American/spoke English and/or because I am not Dutch. It's very disappointing that a non native would be treated differently in this establishment. If the world is going to ever be a different place and evolve, discrimination has to stop. It's unfortunate that we will not be going to this restaurant even though my husband's reservation was accepted as I will not go anywhere where I am treated this way. I hope that if the owners of this restraint were to ever come to our country, that they would be greeted with respect and kindness. Especially if I was there to support their business. I am also letting our hotel know of the situation once we arrive so that none of their other guests are treated in this manner. read more

I still swoon when I recall the smoked salmon dish and the sea brim dish I had here. The quality of all the ingredients and the preparation was at a very high level. My wife and I ordered tasting menus and were very impressed with the food at, what considers itself, merely a neighborhood restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant. Service was friendly, casual and yet fully knowledgeable and professional. Some people have had awkward and hurtful experiences getting a table here. I think there are cultural and language differences at fault. Diners should realize that small restaurants stagger their seating to keep the kitchen from having all orders coming in at once. The reservation policy is not presented on their website. I was, as others were, initially told that my request for a table couldn't be fulfilled. They said they were fully booked. However, I replied to my rejection with a request for explanation, was I reserving too early or were they simply fully booked? The reply was gracious. They are small and busy and do not take reservations more than thirty days in advance and their restaurant seating is geared more towards groups, not couples. I waited and my request for a table 30 days out was accepted. Too, there seemed to be people of various ethnic origins seated and enjoying themselves. My advice is that it is necessary to reserve to get a table and that you cannot do this more than 30 days in advance. I would certainly love to dine here again. read more

What a wonderful dinner!! We started with the sardines, paired with a lovely sparkling wine they suggested - it was perfect. Then, a lovely shaved veal with white asparagus nestled in a lemony vinaigrette- paired with a perfect chenin blanc. Followed by the best lamb I have ever had - and paired with a dolomite red. These folks really know food AND wine. Lastly, we had a beautiful rhubarb tart and a sweet wine. Amazing little place. Was recommended to us by our Airbnb host and it did not disappoint. Pre fix menu so don't go in if you are craving something specific. But, if you are open to tasting some amazing food and wine then this place is perfect. The sommelier will paint the most amazing pictured of the wine and he makes sure to give you something that pairs perfectly with your meal. Was I fortunate to have stumbled into this lovely neighborhood bistro one evening after a day working in Amsterdam. I went out for a walk, found this place (with a little help from Yelp) and was I ever lucky. They do two seatings and I was early (6pm) so they squeezed me in at the bar for the prix fixe and wine pairing. I took photos of the wine labels, fairly obscure french white and red that were both memorable. My hosts were friendly and real wine geeks (I mean that in the most flattering way).
