Would go back to both in a heartbeat. Side note, hate to make a pitch for Apple, but I incurred no foreign transaction or currency fees using their card traveling thru Switzerland, Germany, and Amsterdam. The service was wonderful here and the food was good, I can understand why this is on a travel site's choice winner list.. since it was great. Kop van jut is located in a bit of a busy tourist area convenient to a tram stop but the outdoor seating was comfortable. We had a potato and meatball dish with sauerkraut which was delicious (although the meatball was dry) and unique, a schnitzel dish, and mussels. The variety was fantastic and our waitress was really sweet. I appreciate that you can make reservations ahead of time especially since there were six of us! read more

An excellent cafe! Simple menu, delicious beer. Tonight we had mussels and pork schnitzel. Both main courses came with fries and salad. The mussels also came with Bitteballen. Great beer menu. Try the Hertog Jan Bastaard. It's light, and lemony. Service is great, very friendly. Free WiFi, and there is a place to charge your cell phone for one euro. Outdoor seating is available, but the indoor dining room is warm and cozy. I highly recommend! read more

Out of a Groupon deal, I went here with my mom for high tea. Overall we had a lovely mother-daughter time here. The high tea came with some savory and sweet food items. Unlimited refill for the tea (major plus). There was a scone with jam and cream. A wrap with cream cheese. Ginger biscuits. Strawberries. Tomato-paparika soup. Croquette with goat cheese filling. Each slice of chocolate cake and banana bread. Chocolate fudge piece. What stood out the most was the tomato paprika. It was served in a little tea cups. It went great with the croquette and the wrap. I am not a fan of goat cheese and I was surprised that I liked the way they have prepared the croquette. I probably wouldn't have realized goat cheese was in it if they haven't told me so. The scone was toasted and warm. But I found the scone to be standard. The jam that came with the scone was slighty too runny. The cakes were moist and sweet. The banana bread had dash of cinnamon. They had friendly staff and the place was small but cozy. It was the perfect atmosphere to huddle over a cup of tea and chat. The overall experience with the food and atmosphere added up to this place. read more

We like the food and the service, with good price to match. We came early at 6pm so we got in easy without reservation. Cute decor with chandelier and striking colored wallpaper. The lighting was dim with candle on the table. Romantic. The server was friendly and pretty bubbly. I ordered the famous Ditch bitterballen. They were served hot. Crispy outside and gooey inside with tangy mustard dip. Pretty good. For main entree, I had the mussels, which was the Catch of the Day. They tasted fresh. They came in this soupy milky broth, which was nice but slightly bitter. Came with side fries. I enjoyed this meal, and it was cheap at only 9 euro. The Dutch steak with onions and mushrooms was good too. Cooked perfectly. Medium was made with red in the center. The size was slightly on a smaller side for American standard, but this came with side salads and fries. Plenty to fill you up. 18 euro. Catchy local pop music was playing the whole time we were there, and I enjoyed listening to them. I recommend this place for a good lunch or dinner, reasonable price, away from the bulk of other tourists. read more

Came here with a group of five which was a little tight on space because the room is very narrow. Ordered beers and none contained the same amount of beer. Good for the person having the fullest glass but doesn't feel right for the others. Someone in our party knocked over his full glass of beer by accident. Waitress came with a cloth to clean it up but did not offer a replacement... Food was not good: schnitzel tasted a bit funky, veggie wrap was still cold on the inside, and chicken sate was overcooked. Hardly any vegetables for side dish. I don't know how this place gets such a good rating on yelp. read more

In an area of Amsterdam absolutely swarming with restaurants of all kinds vying for your attention and custom, where every building on six connecting streets is a restaurant, Kop Van Jut stood out for me- because it looked quiet and unassuming and somehow authentic, and wasn't a garish Argentinian Grillhouse or All You Can Eat Thai. It's a very cosy restaurant- there are only 14 seats upstairs, and not much more than that downstairs. I was there when it was quiet, but when it's full I imagine the atmosphere would be pretty good, and it wouldn't feel too cramped. A straightforward menu (Dutch on one side, English on the other)- not too many choices but a decent selection of what seems like Dutch traditional food, dominated by grilled meat dishes, maybe not so good for vegetarians but plenty for us to choose from. The food was cooked very well and was excellently presented- the best-tasting and best-looking meal I had in Amsterdam, for sure. They even have their own Kop Van Jut beer- it's not actually brewed on site but it's got their label on and only available there. It's worth a try, it looks like a blonde but is quite strong, almost like a tripel beer. Had the steak, Indonesian chicken satay spareribs and seafood stew. Bitterball. All were very good to excellent. We ate everything and the kids even enjoyed some of the foreign food Service slow. I was in Amsterdam for a 24 hour layover and stayed in the city for the night. While walking around looking for a dinner spot, I found Kop Van Jut ... and oh boy, am I glad I did! It was a slow night and I was able to get a table instantly. There were two ladies working this evening and both were extremely friendly. The food was FANTASTIC as well. So, a win-win for me! My only regret is that I was so sleep deprived and too busy talking that I forgot to leave a tip for my wonderful server. I did not realize this mistake until I got home the next day. Dinner at Kop Van Jut was very possibly my FAVORITE dining experience of a 2 week vacation (and we had some amazing meals). But this one topped them all with not only it's delicious food, but beyond fun and friendly service and charming ambiance. Sabina, our server could not possibly have made our dinner here any better. The owner popped by our table a number of times to make sure that we were enjoying our meal. I ordered the Zuurkoolstamppot (the vegetarian version) and have been craving it ever since. We went here on our first night in Amsterdam. We found it while walking through Leidseplein on a Friday night around 21:30, and were drawn to the idea of Dutch food in a small cafe. We were so happy to see locals and tourists alike eating next to each other. The food was excellent, although I don't know how it stacks up to places like Moeders in that regard. The staff were all quite friendly and I think the place even had regulars come in at one point. Do not feel wary of the touristy surroundings, this place will make you feel quite comfortable in the crazy that frequents this neighborhood. read more

Had dinner here last night with my wife. This restaurant is across the street from The Pantry which gets all the attention; however, Kop Van Jut should not be missed. It truly is a diamond along restaurant row. The paprika soup was delicious, as were the goat cheese croquettes. We followed these up with the mussels which were much more than we expected. Last we polished off the night with a chocolate nut cake and baileys coffee dessert drink. The meal overall was fantastic! Oh, I forgot to mention, their carafe of house wine is practically a bottle. Atmosphere is really smokey in a "stale oil" kind of way and the food was pretty disappointing. The fries came out too brown - as it does when the oil is reused without being changed. The "Thai pork" entree was like chewing old leather slathered with a "peanut sauce" that I could have done better if I heated up a jar of Skippy's. While on a trip to Amsterdam with my sisters we stumbled upon Kop van Jut. It is a very tiny, dark, little restaurant located in a very busy, restaurant area between the Rijksmuseum, Heineken and the Casino. You could easily walk right past it. We liked the restaurant so much we ate there 2 nights in a row. Chef Ivo offers innovative food, carefully prepared. We had the most delicious cauliflower soup and tomato soup. Great steak and pork schnitzel. Special on the second night was dungeness crab cakes, prepared differently to what we are used to in the US but absolutely delicious. Our servers, Eva and Nuria were also terrific. This restaurant was a great find that I heartily recommend and would be pleased to return to. read more

Came here to try out some Dutch food. It seems very authentic and cosy which it is however the service wasn't as friendly as I expected. It's a very small place so I can imagine it being very busy at times. The croquettes aren't exceptional. The main meal was nice we had meatballs and mash and they even brought over extra gravy when we asked for it. read more
