I'm not from the area so can't speak to what other options are available on the main strip where Relic is situated, but for me this meal was just okay. The service was top notch and super accommodating, and the ambiance of the place itself was cozy and upscale, but overall the food wasn't doing it for me. To start we ordered oysters which were fresh. They'd run out of Blue Points which were noticeably better from the other option they ended up having to give us since just three were left, which were just a tease at that point. The mussels were in a garlic and white wine sauce that was just too sweet and not really balanced enough, and many of the mussels were still closed or almost closed which I know better than to mess with. My steak special was the best thing I had here with mashed potatoes and crunchy greens, but even the au poivre sauce wasn't very flavorful. Still, my steak came out cooked just how I asked for it, and it was a good cut of meat. The waitress did say the kitchen was closing early that night since the chef's wife just had a baby so maybe it was just an off night. A wonderful meal for Valentine's Day. The first floor of the restaurant was set up with tables for two a nice touch for the day. A pic is attached with the beautiful napkin rose. We typically eat upstairs. Our server was pleasant but new for us. Greg the owner stopped by as he normally does and we had a brief chat. A couple of cocktails a spicy Hawaiian Margarita and an Aviation. Both were perfect. We ordered a dozen oysters two types and they were clean and fresh. For mains we got the surf and turf and 8 oz. Filet. All perfectly prepared. My side was the Brussels sprouts and they were great but different from what I remember. Greg said that the new chef added chili aioli. It was a good add. Relic on State, the site of the long gone Jean Pierre's & other restaurants is a keeper - a true steak house with gracious service, generous-sized tables, & a small but well developed menu, uses some of the finest cuts of protein around. I recently went on a Saturday night with 5 other people. Three ordered the filet ($45.00), & everything is a la carte, so the small filet was served with nothing but a sprig of rosemary. The mashed potatoes & asparagus ordered were additional at $10.00 each. One guest ordered the salmon - she always orders salmon - & said it was the best she ever had. I wanted lamb chops & was lucky to find that they were one of the specials @ $55.00. I got 4 thick, perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked chops, which was to come with a pepper puree, which I can't eat, but they were kind enough to serve it with a demi glaze. It was served with fresh green beans & and thin eggplant strips stuffed with something delicious, though I'm clueless as to what it was. Unfortunately, the string beans & eggplant were seriously undercooked & my fork could not penetrate either. That is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. Since they have a very crowded & busy bar downstairs, they have a nice cocktail & wine menu, though I can't attest to either as I wasn't drinking. My wife and I had a date night yesterday and we decided to eat at this restaurant. This location has been several restaurants over the years with Relic being the last for almost 4 years. We both really enjoyed our dinner. I had their Halibut special, after hearing the people at the next table raving about the, and my wife had the scallops. They were both fabulous. The service was very good, except for a minor mistake at dessert time, when our brownie didn't come out until our server went to the kitchen to see what the problem was. She came back and kindly notified us that it was coming out and they were taking it off the bill. This was handled very professionally. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant. read more

Took my wife and daughter out for dinner. Have always loved this place, such nice ambiance and a cozy, lively bar. We dined upstairs. The girls ordered 8oz filets, I ordered the porterhouse which was sold out. I ended up with the filet. All 3 were disappointed with the steak- this was NOT a filet, but almost like a NY strip, very chewy, tough to cut, no flavor. My daughters had a large fat ribbon through the middle, which made eating it even more difficult. We all ordered medium rare, and each one was cooked differently. One very rare, one perfect medium rare, mine well. Sides of mashed potatoes and Brussels were tasty. Desert was blah. They might be better coming back as a burger bar or get a different supplier. read more

We had a great/pleasant experience here. Everyone was very friendly and inviting. It appears there is an interesting history, I overheard what I believe to be the manager speaking to a group about the history of the location/building. Wished I had heard more since history intrigues me. Hopefully next time we visit I will be able to. Now the food.... everything was delicious. Fresh and locally sourced which is especially important to my family to support restaurants like this. Everything was so good. I just wished there were a few more items on the menu geared towards kids. I also wish that the steaks came with at least one side. But the filet it was so tasty and did not require any sauce. The bread was even so good. The truffle fries were tasty. The creamed spinach was good, but wasn't exactly creamy. We will most certainly be back because it was just that good! I'm reviewing based on customer service, as I have purchased a gift card and not dined there myself. I found the restaurant on Yelp, and noticed it's in a historic building in downtown Newtown. I also noticed it's quite new (definitely wasn't there when I lived there). So I thought it may make a great treat for my parents to enjoy dinner and drinks. I emailed them through the website to inquire about a gift card and received a reply within a few hours. The manager,Carol, instructed me to call at a certain time and she'd be available to place the order. The process was very smooth and she helped me figure out a good amount for the gift card based on menu prices. She mailed me the card, texted me a receipt and thanked me when I let her know it was received. I hope to update the review after my parents describe their experience! read more

We have eaten here several times and the food was outstanding. On our most recent visit 5/11, the special appetizers burrata with arugula pesto and fried wonton chips was perfectly delicious, the prawns with with mango salsa, shrimp cooked perfectly, salsa was good but, clunky. Hanger steak special, steak was tough, lobster was cooked perfectly and had good flavor, crab cake was mushy and had entirely too much old bay, serving it in a bowl probably wasn't the best choice. The filet special with Gorgonzola, Gorgonzola was definitely cheap crumbles, filet was very mushy, mashed potatoes were either being held in a steamer or over cooked and watery,some of the asparagus was cooked perfectly some completely undercooked, sauce was watery and lifeless. Creme brûlée had a beautiful caramelized sugar too but, creme brûlée was very warm, no vanilla bean. Waitress was great very good, friendly, informative,, attentive, bus boy was equally as good! I am sad to be writing this review! We have been here with friends once years ago and it was amazing. For my husband's birthday dinner over the weekend, I chose here as a special date night. We have a lot of kids and date nights are few and far between. I was debating between Rocco's and Relic. I'm pretty disappointed in the choice I ended up making. While we had great drinks and appetizers, my husband's expensive steak was basically inedible. It was so tough it just went in the trash. Unfortunately there was no effort to make this right. I always give credit where it is due. The creme brulee dessert was delicious. Based on them not either remaking the steak (even to take home at this price point) or comping part of the bill, this will be the second and last time we dine here. I did send a direct email about the experience through their website and gave it two days, nobody reached out to me. :( read more

We were at Relic about a year ago. It was good. No issues. We went tonight and after 100 minutes of not being served our food, we left. Theres no process for servers. Two young men would walk food out and just start asking where the plates should go. Just assign numbers to your table! The apps arrived timely but then nothing. Multiple tables who arrived after us were served and left before our dinner arrived. We created a game counting down to 100 minutes, then we dropped cash to pay for what was served and then left. This place was nice! We were looking for an upscale place to eat that was close and this place hit the spot. Absolutely beautiful interior and decor. We went on a Sunday evening, we were surprised at how slow the place was, only a handful of tables had guests. The bread service at the table was absolutely wonderful. Piping hot fresh baked steamy bread was to die for. Started with crab bisque and a wedge salad, followed by a perfectly cooked medium rare ribeye steak, lobster gnocchi with Brussels sprouts and wild mushroom risotto. The gnocchi was a bit dry and the risotto had a slightly odd taste to it, glad we didn't get that as the meal. But props to the crew, the risotto isn't on the menu as a side, but they obliged when I asked if they could do that for us, we were grateful they did. Well my son gave me and my wife a gift card for this restaurant which we never been there. So I made dinner reservations for April 6 at 5 o'clock for a birthday dinner for myself and my mother-in-law, my wife, my son, and his girlfriend and my brother-in-law.My birthday on April 6 and my mother in law is on the 7th. Stopped in for pre-dinner cocktails as we thought our reservations were for an earlier time and Simone & Cat (Kat?) made us immediately feel welcomed when we sat at the bar. The cocktails were spot on, the service was out of this world, and we got a peek into the restaurant. We wanted to try to convince our friends we were meeting for dinner to change plans to have dinner at Relic, but we didn't since we had reservations. We did however come back about 2 hours later with them for a night cap. The bar and building are so cool, chill and fun. Such a great time. Very disappointing. We were a party of 10 with a reservation on a Saturday night. Four of the 10 meals came out cold and undercooked. Steaks were served with scoops of garlic butter, but the butter didn't melt! How could the kitchen send out meals that are cold, especially at these prices???? One of the filets was ordered medium well and came out very rare. Both ribeyes were almost 1/2 fat (we expected some fat, but not this much). Sides were cold and relatively small. There were a couple of meals that were good. The service was average. Food delivery for both the appetizers and the entrees was done "auction" style - who had the filet, who had the ribeye, etc. Unacceptable for this style restaurant. Server never offered coffee or after-dinner beverages. Overall, for a $700 dinner for 10 people, we were all disappointed. I attended Relic on State's first wine pairing dinner event featuring Duckhorn vineyards. This experience was outstanding! Lynn explained the wines perfectly with background history of the family while Greg and Tony discussed the history of the restaurant with explanation of the food choices. The meat & cheeses paired perfectly with the champagne, succulent scallops were paired with Sauvignon Blanc and the outrageously delicious crab bisque was served with Chardonnay. The main course was the perfectly prepared steak - the chef out did himself with the preparation! The wine choice was perfect as well- Cabernet Sauvignon! Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake that paired perfectly with Merlot. The entire experience was 5 star.. good food, good wine, new friends. Bravo. I am looking forward the next special event- Bourbon pairing dinner! read more

The food there was terrible. It was not fresh. It did not have great taste. The place is very cold and the waitress kept trying to take away our plates before we had a chance to finish what were on the plates. We felt rushed and we felt we couldn't eat in a nice and slow , calm manner. I don't understand why waitresses and waitstaff are always trying to take the plates away from the table when there are food on there .... at least offer to have it wrapped up. I think it is extremely rude for employees to just take the food away when you are paying for the food and they don't ask if we are done with it or if we would like to have it to go. If they are looking for something to do then they should do something in the kitchen. Don't keep trying to clean up the table when people are still enjoying their food at a nice even pace. read more

My wife took me to Relic for my birthday because we had an incredible first visit there. Our mood was great. We were ready to have a fun night and we did with the exception that my $60 ribeye was not edible. I ordered medium rare and the temperature was right, but the cut of meat was so bad that I could not chew it and the fat was so dense it was hard to cut. After filling my napkin with chewy hard pieces I realized that the steak could not be eaten. I mentioned it to the waiter. He was so nice and sweet. I didn't want to be rude and did not ask for a discount. My wife wrote the owners and said that they might be getting a bad deal on their meats. We did not receive a reply. After reading other similar review reviews here on yelp, I realize that whoever is buying meat for relic is buying cheap, low quality meats, and overcharging customers. Do yourself a favor and do not order steak at this establishment. Drinks and dessert and fish are great. read more

The food was good but it took almost an hour for it to come out. The brussels sprouts were delicious and my halibut was very good. My sisters fillet was pretty good as well. The food was ok - the service horrendous. Our reservation was for 8.... They didn't seat us till 8:40 - the manager just said "thanks" then we never saw him again. Half the items were out ( well obviously we were waiting so long) the server was harmless but clueless - we got our appetizers - at 9:20 and our drinks at 9:30..... main dishes we waited till 10:30 - and my filet mignon was over cooked. We live in Newtown so were happy to see another restaurant trying to make it in this revolving door location. We all wanted to love our experience here but sadly, it was a huge disappointment. Visited on a recent Sunday night at 5:30 and sat in the upstairs dining area where the bar is (the upstairs bar was not open our visit). Pretty room. We ordered 4 drinks and waited 15+ minutes for them to arrive. We all ordered the special. A few minutes later, the waiter returned to say they were out of the special . . . had 2 left. Mind you the restaurant opened at 5:00 and was nearly empty, so how they ran out is a mystery. The two guys re-ordered something else. Five minutes later, the waiter returned to say that they were out of whatever my husband re-ordered. Waited a little too long for salads to arrive but they looked good. Unfortunately, my friend found herself chewing on a piece of paper towel in her salad, and a minute later I got the same 'treat' in mine. The waiter took them all away and we said we didn't want more. Meal finally came and was decent. Portions were average. Wanted to order additional glasses of wine but waiter nowhere to be found. Finally, as we finished our meals, the manager came over and said he was told there were some "issues" with our meals. We explained the above, emphasizing that we were all pulling for the restaurant to make it because we're residents of Newtown, but the experience was unacceptable thus far. He offered to comp us desserts, but we were having dessert at home so politely declined. He sent them out anyway, forcing us to make a choice to eat them, box them, or waste the food. We chose to eat them. At the very least, he should have comped us our drinks, or taken a portion off the bill, but simply serving us desserts we said we didn't want didn't leave a good taste in our mouth for returning anytime soon, if ever. read more

What a fabulous and elegant restaurant. I've been to Relic with my husband a few times and I have to say I can't get enough! The atmosphere is so inviting and warm. The candles on the tables truly make your meal feel more intimate. It's a beautiful touch. Here is a few items we tried and absolutely loved! The care that is taken to make the cocktails, truly shines though. The wine list was carefully selected and the bottles my husband and I shared were delectable. The deconstructed tuna was so fresh it melted in my mouth. The local burrata is not to me missed. The Caesar's salad with their homemade dressing is the best I'd ever had. The Filet I almost didn't even need a knife, so tender and flavorsome. The Irish Relic burger.. OMG! Words can't describe how scrumptious this burger is. You will just have to experience this heaven in your mouth yourself. I highly recommend saving some room for dessert. You must enjoy the home made Panna Cotta it is luscious. read more

Great food & ambience. I have been here for dinner multiple times and once for brunch. The food is better than Rocco's, especially the brunch, with a larger menu. The omelettes, avocado toast and steak sandwich were excellent during our most recent visit. I can not believe a few bad reviews purely because a few people had to wait for their food to come out, when every restaurant is currently short staffed.
