It is NOT for the faint of heart. The trails are mostly narrow with steep drop-offs (ie no two tracks), but the horses handle it beautifully, and at the end of the day you will likely say "Wow!". The Schertenleib's were on time and ready to go as scheduled. The location is well-marked and easy to find using their instructions. They gave a short introduction for new riders, and pick the horses to match the riders ability and experience. The horses appeared to this newbie to be healthy and very well-trained. Blaze and Frankie were our mounts, and they were fantastic Rosie led the ride, which lasted ~4-1/2 hours roundtrip through very rugged and remote terrain. Temperatures were in the mid 90's which likely resulted in not seeing any wild game. Approximately 2/3 of the way through the ride there is a 20-30 minute rest time at a remote cabin (available for rent from the state). Anything you bring will be limited to whatever you can fit into a small saddlebag, so pack lightly. We highly recommend True West Trail Rides, and we are looking forward to riding with them again!

It was so much fun to walk through the many different terrains on the different trails. We ended at the iconic bridge and played around in the river for a bit to cool down. The river was so serene and we saw lots of ducks, geese and fish. I highly recommend this trail! My only warning would be to make sure you bring water and watch it if you're allergic to bees because there were a lot of bees attracted to the water.

The Slavin Conservation Area is a respite from the heavy crowds on the Spokane area beaches during…read moresummer months. The lake at Slavin is covered in weeds and overgrowth to the point where paddleboarding or fishing are not feasible. However, that also means that it is not a good candidate for kids, teenagers, and loud family reunions. When I was at Slavin, there was a small group of horseback riders, a few hikers, and one other mountain biker. I mountain biked the trails when I was there. The trails are not designed for mountain biking with rollercoaster feel, banked curves, and steep descents. Instead, they are forest trails, by this I mean that they trails make you feel like you are biking through the woods on your own, feeling the prairie grasses against your legs, and the snakes slither under the trails. It is a protected conservation area on developed trails that make you think you are exploring an undeveloped landscape. This also means that the trails are not for the faint of heart. After a bike or hike on these trails, you will feel like you have explored the woods a la Lewis and Clark.
