I'd describe it as a gradual incline, so you'll still get a workout, but it's nothing too difficult. One thing I really appreciated was that there are benches all along the trail... almost like they knew people would need a few breaks! The view from the top is absolutely worth it. There are a few shortcuts you can take, but be aware they're much steeper than the main trail, both going up and coming back down. We did this hike with our teens, a toddler and a baby. Our toddler walked a surprisingly large portion before needing a ride (we came prepared with a carrier) and we also had grandparents in their 60s with us who completed the hike without much trouble. Overall, we saw people of all ages enjoying the trail, which says a lot about how accessible it is. The only downsides were that parking is pretty limited when it's busy and the bathrooms were unfortunately dirty and smelled bad. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this hike. The beautiful views, well maintained trail, and frequent benches make it a great outing for families and hikers of all ages.

This trail runs past ancient Native American pictographs before taking a lazy stroll amidst the singing birds of the Little Spokane River. At the west end of the path, you can turn north and explore the Knothead Valley trail which winds up through ponderosa pines and gives stunning views of the Spokane River below. The 6.5 mile loop drops back across the valley before turning south and ending back at the Painted Rocks trailhead for a solid outing. If you are looking for a longer excursion or just want more time along the river, the easterly trail (across the street and south across the bridge) adds another couple of miles of waterfront scenery.

The trail is very well maintained. I read they did a huge overhaul in 2015 and it shows. There is a beautiful cedar grove about 2 miles in that offers a park bench to sit at. To get there, the trail is relatively flat most of the way with a gradual, barely noticeable incline. Just after the grove you will do some steep switchbacks before heading to the shady side of the mountain and finally, to a beautiful waterfall. If You continue, you will go above the waterfall and find yourself at another much larger waterfall. From there, you will make a slow descent down, and then a much quicker descent. It's said that the trail was 8 and a 1/2 miles. According to my phone, we did much further than that at about 10 miles. This probably is due to the fact that the trailhead is about a 1/2 a mile from the parking lot. We also did some other walking around near the Cedar Grove et cetera. I would recommend doing this trail if you have moderate hiking experience. This could be done with children if they are also seasoned hikers. I wouldn't take very small children though, since on the switch back there isn't much on the side of the trail. There is an equestrian trail as well. We didn't see too many people on that trail other than a couple of mountain bikers. On the main trail, it was decently busy but not enough to feel like it was crowded.

I went this past week, it's winter so the trail is blocked by snow and hard to see path. But Snows never stopped a hike for me, and shouldn't! But due to have no signs on the trail and misleading map in the beginning we just kept hiking and hiking to what seemed like nothing, it was super worrisome! And definitely stressful when you are trying to have fun and don't have a map to get back or signs knowing you are going the right way! So definitely fun but when you are hiking you kinda wanna know where you are and how far you have to go. No hate to this trail it's a great adventure but, just wanted to let people know what they are walking into if they like to hike a few miles. Be safe ya'll

We went back a couple days later to find the fire was out. I took my friend's 2-mile walk with his dog and a lot of times he takes the dog home and goes back and walks another 4 miles. I found the area to be gorgeous with the Spokane river displaying a beautiful reflection early morning views. I had a fantastic time!! Can't wait to come back and trail walk again!

There is parking either at McEuen Park or over by the Trailhead marker by Sanders Beach. The hike itself is fairly easy to moderate. The main trail is easy, however, if you go off path and down to the shoreline you just have to watch your step. I hiked Stevens Creek Trail on a hot, weekday evening. Who knew that Spokane could get so hot. It…read moreseemed to be in the 90s for multiple weeks in a row. My theory is that the desert plains of central WA allows hot air to flow north unobstructed by mountain ranges. The heat didn't stop me, it only shortened my hikes. Stevens Creek Trail is another collection of trails that would give an experienced hiker new trails for a full day of hiking. I only hiked to the top, for a view of the protected forest and hay farms below, but the trails headed deeper in the forest along the top of a ridge. I never saw any deer or bears on my hikes in these forest ranges, but this hike in particular had many signs posted to watch out for bears. I think the sign would be more relevant for evening or morning hikes. All the bears are lying down in the shade when it's 95 degrees and sunny, waiting for cooler temperatures before they return to foraging. That doesn't mean that there weren't many animals in the forest. It was a turkey bonanza everywhere around Spokane. There were more turkeys than I'd ever seen in my life. There were turkey packs in the forest, meadow, in front yards, and even at the bus stop across from the grocery store. It was if they knew that the closer they were to civilization, the safer they would be from hunters.

It is NOT for the faint of heart. The trails are mostly narrow with steep drop-offs (ie no two tracks), but the horses handle it beautifully, and at the end of the day you will likely say "Wow!". The Schertenleib's were on time and ready to go as scheduled. The location is well-marked and easy to find using their instructions. They gave a short introduction for new riders, and pick the horses to match the riders ability and experience. The horses appeared to this newbie to be healthy and very well-trained. Blaze and Frankie were our mounts, and they were fantastic Rosie led the ride, which lasted ~4-1/2 hours roundtrip through very rugged and remote terrain. Temperatures were in the mid 90's which likely resulted in not seeing any wild game. Approximately 2/3 of the way through the ride there is a 20-30 minute rest time at a remote cabin (available for rent from the state). Anything you bring will be limited to whatever you can fit into a small saddlebag, so pack lightly. We highly recommend True West Trail Rides, and we are looking forward to riding with them again!
