Their price was high, but on par with other contractors. Burkholder's sales staff is very professional and their installer is very skilled. However, there were issues. When the installer cut out the old fiberglass shower enclosure, he did nothing to contain the dust. He did not hang plastic or use an air filtration system. Also, he did not have enough tarps to cover the entire floor, so roughly one third of the floor was not protected. Before the installer was about to grout the shower, I learned he was planning to grout the corners and other areas of a shower where dissimilar construction materials meet. Having done many home improvement projects over the years, I was fairly confident those areas should be caulked and not grouted. But I wanted to be certain, so I called the grout manufacturer, Laticrete. I spoke to two technical representatives (one used to work as a professional tile installer), and both advised against grouting those areas because the grout will crack. So, I told the installer to use color matched caulk instead of grout in those areas. He said Burkholder's has never had a problem with the grout cracking, but they would order the caulk that matches the grout. When I returned later to check on his progress, I noticed the entire shower was grouted. I asked him about that and he said the owner instructed him to grout the entire shower and caulk over those areas later. Applying caulk on top of grout is also wrong and something I confirmed with Laticrete. Grout is a porous surface, so there is a high likelihood the caulk will separate from the grout and mold will form under the caulk. I questioned the owner about this in a text and he wrote, "We always caulk after grouting, with no issues." Not true, according to the installer. They never caulk their tiled shower enclosures. The owner knew what he was doing was wrong, but did it anyway. I could have insisted that Burkholder's remove the grout and replace it with color matched caulk, but I was concerned they would do a poor job, just to make a point. So, I asked them to warranty the grout against cracking for 10 years. As expected, they would only agree to warranty the grout for 17 months. The normal warranty is 12 months. After the job was finished, I asked Burkholder's for their MHIC license number, and they could not produce one. In Maryland, unless you are a subcontractor performing work for an MHIC licensed contractor, you must have an MHIC license to do home improvements. That includes bathroom remodels and installing flooring, other than carpet. If you decide to use Burkholder's, make sure they are licensed to do the work you want them to perform. Also, know the law and insist they follow it. In Maryland, you can check the status of a home improvement contractor's license by going to: https://www.dllr.state.md.us/cgi-bin/ElectronicLicensing/OP_search/OP_search.cgi?calling_app=HIC::HIC_qselect

I had a bathroom remodel back in 2021 - 2022. I removed a shower and jacuzzi tub and replaced with…read morea larger shower with tile/grout as well as new flooring. The job was scheduled to done in one but ended up being four months. Below are major and minor shortcomings I experienced during the project: - One of the tile guys (contractors hired by Mountaineer) over hungover and admitted to my wife he had partied the night before. - The tile guys did not finish the tiling, (did not do side and back of a knee-wall) which forced a Mountaineer employee to come out. He did the best he could, but he is not a tile expert. - A wall outlet was installed upside down and not flush with the wall, which is a no-brainer. - Initially the shower arm was not straight and visibly angled to the right, which I had to point out to the workers to fix - another no-brainer. - The stain in ceiling that I reported from the toilet removal took over three weeks before someone came out to look at. - A Mountaineer employee who initially came out to repair the ceiling stain and adjust the crooked shower faucet handle did a horrible job as he initially set the faucet handle so it looked straight, but it was so loose it would have fallen off after the first use. When I pointed that out to him, he was not happy and said it could not be adjusted better. However, later that day, a second Mountaineer employee out who was able to satisfactory do the work that first employee could not do. - The height of the glass was discussed when the glass people (came out to measure. I specifically said I wanted the taller glass option to match the higher tile that was installed. When the glass guys (contractors hired by Mountaineer) came out to install, one of them admitted to me that the glass size written on the work order was originally 76 inches but was cross out and 72 inches written in its place (someone at Mountaineer made that change without my knowledge. - When my wife and I initially came out to Mountaineer to get the project started, we were told all glass used by your company was 3/8 inch thick all around. However, the glass that originally was delivered was only 1/4 inch thick (glass wall) on top of it being shorter than promised and had to be reordered. - The glass guys were scheduled and rescheduled to come out a total of five time before the work was actually completed. Various issues included glass parts not being ordered, glass not ordered to size promised, weather/schedule conflicts. - Last but not least, when the old jacuzzi tub was being taken out of the house, it got dropped on the bare hardwood floor leaving a deep gouge. Now, the reason I am doing a Yelp review nearly four years later is because a few months ago back spots started to appear in the grout on the floor. These black spots could not be scrubbed out. They appeared to be under the grout. The grout also appeared to be thinning out. I decided it might be best to have the shower re-grouted. I hired a knowledgeable contractor. When he dug out the old grout on the shower floor, he discovered there were a lot of "soft" areas. The shower floor was never sealed properly and allowed water to seep in. Additionally, as he was digging out some of the grout on the walls, he discovered grout was evenly filled in. Some areas of grout were only 1/16 of an inch thick with a large empty space behind. Lastly, when the shower was installed, we were told the grout never needed resealing as the sealant in the high-quality grout I was promised was used (Spectralock), was already mixed into the grout. The contractor I hired to fix Mountaineer's shoddy job said that was untrue. He recommended applying sealant every 3 - 5 years. In hindsight, I don't believe a high-quality grout was ever used. I would not recommend Mountaineer for any remodeling job.
