However, that's exactly what happened to me when I broke my foot while installing vinyl plank flooring. I had just had some carpet installed by Petersen's on the upper level of my home so, I gave Barbie a callback and told her about my situation. She was incredibly helpful in getting things back on track for me and working with their team to get my home ready to go before the movers came. And when the installers thought I was making a mistake on flooring for the stairs in the home, they told me why, showed me why, and I ended up having them install the new treads and risers too. They did it all before the movers came and for a price that was more than fair. It isn't just customer service sometimes, it's about taking the time to hear the needs and concerns of customers that sets some businesses above others. And if the rules were you can only write one review ever, then this would be the one. I had the pleasure of working with Petersen's Carpet and Flooring on numerous occasions now and can say, without hesitation, they stand above all else. My husband and I are informed consumers, we do our homework. Let's start with the most recent experience with Sarah, who didn't take long to put us at ease. She provided, in our eyes, just the right amount of information and guidance as we looked at everything there was to offer. She instinctively gave us the space we needed. She is a gem. Between Terri and Sarah, they kept us well informed about the ordering of samples to product availability to installation dates. Then on to the crew who installed the hardwood and carpeting. Chad and Mark arrived and again, we quickly were at ease. Their wittiness was a lot of fun but above all else, their work was superior. They respected our space, were meticulous about their work, and left things just as they found them. Next, we had a manufacturer's defect to deal with and while it's not an "ideal" situation, it happens. That's when Gayle stepped in. And If anyone wanted to make it right, it was Gayle. And she did. After we decided to replace our disgusting 25 yr old carpet with hardwood, we started shopping. Lowes, Home Depot were the first stops but ultimately we decided it was important to support our local small businesses, so we headed to Petersen's. Paul, our salesman was wonderful. He gave us many different options and gave me the pros and cons. My only complaint would be that the color I chose really shows the dirt and I have to clean it frequently. Never having had hardwood, that would have been good to know. One thing I really liked was that the wood was delivered a week prior to installation so it would adjust to the humidity and temperature of the house. Installers were wonderful and did a great job. We had an in-home consultation with Denny- he was very helpful, patient, and not at all pushy. We were able to choose carpet from the samples he brought (after asking over the phone for our likes/dislikes). The process was incredibly easy. We wanted to wait a few weeks for the installation and they accommodated- although I'm sure it could have been done quickly if we had asked. The installers came on time and worked quietly and fast. The service, overall, of Petersen's was good. I had an issue with my carpet, and they replaced it free of charge. Actually I did not ask them to replace it. They just said it needed replacing (and it had only been less than a year). They replaced it with the same exact carpet, and I am having the same issues again. So now I'm just questioning if I paid top dollar for carpet that won't look good in a few years. I am out almost $2,000 for a small master bedroom. I did not get other official quotes. I just went with a local company that I felt would install the best carpet and pad possible for a small room. I wanted it to look awesome for 8-10 years. I just don't have that confidence that the salesperson heard my concerns. She is no longer working there either. She also upsold me a better pad when they did the "free" redo. I asked for the best the first time around and said it didn't feel good on the feet. So she sold me $300 higher grade padding. All in all, the experience was "A-OK" as Yelp puts it for 3 stars. The back and forth with the company has been a little bit of an issue, and my little project doesn't seem important as is normally the case with companies these days. Who wants to take care of a $2,000 job? It is small. I'll live with the carpet. When I replace it in a few years, I'll just do a better job researching and educating myself. I don't know much about carpet, but I sure am learning this time around. read more

I needed to replace our 15 year old carpet that was worn out after my son vomited all over it. Debbie, the sales associate, came out the day after I placed my initial distress call to give me a quick estimate. She was very helpful in recommending a product type based on my specifications. Later, after Debbie left, I visited the store to pick out an exact carpet. The store staff was friendly and helpful in pointing me in the direction I needed to go. I selected an EverClean carpet that was not over-the-top expensive but was very soft and had a great warranty. Although delivery was delayed two days due to back-to-back snowstorms, the delivery team arrived on time on the third scheduled day of install. They were very detail oriented and careful. Since I have OCD, I asked them if they could be careful to not bump the walls and put marks on them. They swept and vacuumed several times throughout the install as well as at the end (which made me VERY happy). Rigo, the delivery team leader, was adamant about moving all of my furniture back so that I would not have to lift a finger. Although I did not pick an expensive carpet, I feel like it looks like a million buck$! I can't imagine that anything else I could have picked would have looked any better. And, the delivery men didn't mark ANY of the walls! Phew! From start to finish I had new carpet and less stress is less than two weeks. Not recommended. I had a kitchen retiled and wood floors refinished by them. The workers were kind and knowledgeable, but in all other aspects, I found the process painful. Getting the measurements and quote was fairly easy. The kitchen was straightforward; I had a few questions about whether some areas of the wood floor would have to be replaced. I was told they could be fixed by refinishing. Once a deposit was paid, I had to reach out to their staff multiple times to get my kitchen-flooring job, and then wood floor refinishing scheduled. I had to call to get the kitchen scheduled, as they did not, as was the same with the refinishing. When I finally got them to schedule the refinishing, I was simply told a date they'd start without any input. I had repeatedly told the scheduling staff I could not do Tuesdays, and when I finally heard back about my wood floor-refinishing job, she wanted to start it on a Tuesday. When I reminded her about the fact Tuesdays are difficult for me, I was told she had no idea when it could be done if I didn't allow them to start on the Tuesday. I had to cancel my attendance at a company meeting to deal with floor refinishers. The kitchen job went fairly in fairly smoothly after the start. For both the kitchen and the refinishing, I had paid for furniture/appliance moving. I had to help the kitchen installer because he could not do it himself, and they had sent him alone. I was told I would receive a 50% refund for the moving fee for the kitchen, as I had to do the work of another workman. It's been over six months, and I still haven't received it. I think it's safe to say I won't! I believe the refinishers are just subcontractors, as they came from quite far away, but I am not certain. When they arrived, the refinishers had been given seemingly zero knowledge of the job besides the basics. They saw my floor and immediately said "you need a floor man to come in here first and fix this first." Turns out the sections of flooring I had inquired on the need for replacement did, in fact, need to be replaced. So, immediately, my quote went up $325 to fix this. When I stated to the saleswoman that I felt mislead as I had specifically asked about the areas and was told they would not need to be replaced, her response was "Don't go there, you don't want to go there." The floor refinishers had no idea they were supposed to help move some stuff, and refused to move some shelving units, and other items. They did move a couch and mattress set. I was told they couldn't move the shelves because they were "personal items". I never was told of any parameters on what they would move or not. I had to take nearly a day off to move stuff out frantically, and pay for a trailer rental to store everything in. That added several hundred dollars to the cost, on top of that, is thought that I essentially paid them over $200 in order for me to move most of the stuff for them. It's been over six months, and I still haven't received that 50% refund. The wood-refinishing job was not completely finished, either. Shoe molding was partially installed when they left for good. They left enough scrap for me to install it myself, thankfully. What was installed did not appear to be coated with "2 coats" as I had paid for. After the fact, I found out there were many more options that homeowners are traditionally given in floor refinishing that I had not been given. I never was informed their were choices on the finish of sealant. What the refinishers did finish looked good, though, I would be hesitant to use them as they dangerously wired the sanding equipment to my home's 240-volt outlet by jamming the bare wires into it. An adapter for three-prong 240-volt outlets was not used, as should be for safety. Many people do this, but a quick search will show you this is unsafe and unprofessional. Unfortunately, I do not see a way to upload pictures here, or I would post documentation of the aforementioned issues. Overall, I feel I did not receive the service and care I paid for. It was a big mistake using them. In hindsight, I think I'd just find some handy man with spare time. They'd cost half the price and probably still be comparable. I spent over $5000, and I feel I did not receive the appropriate customer service that a bill that large deserves. I will not use Petersen's Carpet and Flooring again. read more

I appreciate her request to call and discuss, but I really don't have any more time to spend having them try to defend their customer service. If it is such a concern, it should've been addressed when we had the carpet installed. Below is my response to her: I'm not sure what you mean by "especially after so long....2009". Are you saying the review that you're just seeing took place so long ago? I'm assuming so. I was actually new to yelp in 2009, but the carpet install took place in 2005. At that time one of the managers even had to come out to see if the claims we were making were true. That was really the last straw - why would we lie about new carpet?? I think I even have notes still that I took during our experience and may have names jotted down. At the time of post (due to posting four years later), we felt/still feel so strongly about our experience with Petersen's that we still would unfortunately not recommend anyone. We were so dissatisfied and angered over the poor carpet install that still to this day is not satisfactory....even writing about it at this moment makes my blood pressure rise. read more

She seemed ill prepared to explain and answer questions. We cross bid some parts of the job with other tile/carpet sources....Petersons was about 20% higher also, if you're interested in bamboo and tile, check elsewhere. We recently did a major bathroom remodel and Petersen's provided our tile and grout. I started by visiting 5 or 6 tile stores in Frederick to ask questions. I ask a LOT of questions and I knew very little about tile when I started. The last store I tried was Petersen's and I was fortunate enough to have Debbie Bowman wait on me. What a wealth of knowledge! You know sometime you visit a store and the sales person provides either very little information or just enough information to make the sale; not so with Debbie. I felt like I had an expert in bathroom remodels giving me her undivided attention. (Turns out that's true - she is an expert!) It can be overwhelming when looking at tile sample after tile sample, let alone understanding porcelain vs. ceramic vs. natural tile. It also helps to have an experienced set of eyes to recommend what goes together and Debbie was certainly that. Plus I never felt that I was taking up her time - rather she volunteered more and more information and options. I wound up selecting a tile I liked very much - and already knew I liked the service. But all was not done yet! My contractor spoke directly with Debbie/Petersen's, gave measurements, arranged pick up and that went off without a hitch. We wound up needed a few extra tiles and caulk with little notice and Debbie arranged that as well, much to my delight. Just after the bathroom remodeling was done we needed to carpet our stairs (dogs didn't want to go up and down the wood stairs any longer) and get a carpet for my home office. Of course we went to Petersen's and Debbie figured out how we could purchase the area rug and use the excess to carpet the stairs. That was done today and we are so happy! I always include anything that did NOT go well, as I think that makes a review more authentic. But in this case we are very happy with all aspects of the products, services and installation. I'm a believer in credit where credit due and criticism when due also. We recently decided we wanted to install new sheet flooring in our kitchen and three season sunroom. We spoke with four flooring companies for advice on what we needed. As our sunroom did no have a controlled temperature, (70 degree +), it was important we installed sheet flooring that could take the varied temperature changes with a average 40 degree maintained temperature. After speaking with four flooring companies, two never called us back and two had no intensions of discussing our options. They basically were their way or the highway. We finally called Petersons Carpet & Flooring and spoke with Gayle Peterson. We discussed our needs with her, she came to our house, looked at what we needed, and even had a pleasant visit with her. She found flooring that was designed for our semi-heated sun room. The installation went smoothly and we are very happy with the job. I was wandering around lost trying to find wood flooring. I have been riding past Petersen's for almost two decades (almost) saying "One day I'm going to go into that store" - I'd read their sign every time I rode East on RT40 and loved what they would put up. I got tired of searching and finally stopped! The care and consideration was out of this World!!!! I learned so much from my salesperson - Debbie. She was so good and kind, I put a contract on the new flooring I wanted for my living and dining rooms. She came to measure and my estimate got even better. The installation guys were stellar! Petersen's recently installed carpet on a set of stairs at our house. The job required 120sqft of carpet and I was told, by a Petersen's employee, that we would need 120sqft of padding to cover the stairs and the risers. On the day of the installation, padding was only used on the steps and a landing (approximately 60sqft), but not the risers. When I questioned why I was charged for more padding then needed, I was told, by the owner, "you got a good deal". I told her it didn't feel like a good deal since I was being charged for materials I did not need. The owner proceeded to blame me for not asking more questions when I received the quote. In the end, I was over charged for materials I did not need nor did I receive the excess. The words and tone in which I was spoken to, by the owner, were not those of a person who values her customers. I chose Petersen's because I wanted to support a small business rather than a large box store. I will continue to support small businesses but will NEVER purchase flooring from Petersen's again. read more

we did all our research and homework to determine the best flooring we should install in our medium sized kitchen. we went to at least 4 different local flooring establishments and looked and brought home samples etc...did our consumer's report and BBB research. we are very particular and know what we want. we decided on luxury vinyl tile. the salesperson at Petersen's was very knowledgeable, straightforward and no high pressure sales or BS. we selected the style and the old 2 floor were torn out and the new tiles installed all in one day. The floor looks fabulous. He assured us that all the materials were to be on time and they were. the day the job was stared, he dropped by and that is greatly appreciated. when we had a question later that day, he readily answered our query. we will go back to Petersens in the future. I don't know what happened with the other review that slammed Petersens, but our experience was a total breath of fresh air... we are very very satisfied. read more
