It was a clean store and very organized. They have a garage sale section upstairs of used gear for cheap. To start with, this is not my favorite Charlotte REI location. I much prefer the one in Northlake area (north side of Charlotte). This store is divided into two floors. The layout is almost genius and makes for a cool look inside. There's an entrance on both floors because of the way the mall and parking lot are designed. It still makes for a sometimes frustrating shopping experience. At the Northlake store, they have their REI garage sales outside in a cordoned off section of the parking lot. That means everything that's discounted is lying spread out right in front of you. Very easy to pick from! Here, it seems they have to put everything inside the store. It's all intermingled with the other similar items. If you are familiar with the layout here (which I'm not) then you'll probably be okay at finding what you're looking for. But for odds and ends, it's a bit of a treasure hunt. Staff here is helpful but far and few between when compared to the Northlake store. On one visit at the Northlake store I swear 5 employees asked me if I needed help in the span of 30 minutes. I've been here for that long and never once asked if I needed help. Yep, prices are high. If you're a regular here you already know it. And you probably are a member and get your 10% dividend every year with a bit of that cost returned to you. When things are on sale you get some serious deals - at least 20% off most of the time. I rarely buy things full price here unless I have my heart set on it. read more

I was in need of a new day bag for hiking so we stopped by for their big sale. Members get 20% off one item in store and one item online. Unfortunately it's for full price items only so you can't use it on anything on sale. This is a pretty standard REI store. There are two levels and the bags were upstairs. There were plenty of helpful employees around asking if they could help. I really like that they have sand bags that can be used to add weight to a bag so that you can see how comfortable it is with weight in it. Overall, no complaints about the store. My husband and I have been loyal patrons of REI for years, enjoying not only the quality products but also the outstanding customer service provided at various locations. However, our recent visit to the REI store in Pineville left us utterly disappointed and dissatisfied. The main issue arose during our return process, where we encountered a cashier named Amberphil. To put it mildly, our interaction with him was incredibly disheartening. Their attitude was not just rude but downright judgmental, making the simple task of returning items an unnecessarily unpleasant experience. At other REI locations, such as the one in Durham, the return process has always been swift, transparent, and handled with the utmost professionalism. However, at Pineville, Amberphil made it needlessly complicated, disregarding the store's own policies regarding 100% customer satisfaction and one year return for members. During our subsequent purchase, we unfortunately encountered Amberphil again at the checkout. He had very unnecessary and sarcastic questions and comments throughout the entire transaction. I was extremely uncomfortable and I showed it! I tried to ignore him multiple times but he did not take the hints. Every single item I had (I got a backpack, a pair of shoes and a jacket), he scanned each item and with each item, he asked a list of same questions, but he sounded super sarcastic, he asked me who will be wearing this and that (which is none of his business), and if I was sure I picked the right size and right color "this time" and so on, I can't remember bc it was too much. And no, he was NOT being caring! It may sound normal but he did that with EVERY SINGLE item he scanned and was staring at me the whole time. All the questions asked were extremely on purpose, and targeting me. I was never questioned like that at other REI locations. So freaking WEIRD, I felt like I was being intergoratted. I just said yes to the whole bunch of questions he asked and really hoped it got over with. I know I am not overreacting, otherwise my husband was not that frustrated walking out. He felt the same way I did, and he is usually super oblivious about these things. This whole thing really overshadowed our shopping experience and kinda ruined our night. A sign on the entry door says everyone MUST wear a mask, vaccinated or not. Yet few customers wore one. I asked a manager why the sign was there, she quickly became agitated when she was unable to coherently explain it. Despite being masked herself, and having had the chance to be vaccinated and boosted and boosted again, she kept backing away from me to stay six feet away. The staff are very friendly and go out of their way to help you, answer questions and find the best fit for what you are looking for. Robin told me about their lifetime membership ($20 one time fee) and the benefits, but it didn't seem pushy at all. She also told me about some upcoming sales and a new campaign featuring Women in the Wild and how they are supporting nonprofits that are aligned with that mission. Everyone I encountered were super friendly, helpful and eager to talk about nature activities. I felt comfortable as I am completely inexperienced. I was able to get an idea of the kind of shoes I should be wearing for hiking . My first hike I went in CrossFit Adidas and my feet were not happy for the next two day . Quite honestly, I love this store and REI's in general and hate to give it three stars, but unfortunately, it really does earn it. Firstly, this isn't a huge location, which in turn reflects on what they carry. Their inventory is always great, though the variety carried is so much better at other REI's I've visited. This location lacks variety. Secondly, the pricing isn't' that great, and they certainly aren't competitive with online retailers which I know is difficult to match for brick and mortar stores, but they can be overpriced in most areas --even when compared to smaller local stores such as JessyBrowns. That said, their member perks are pretty awesome. Lastly, knowledge from their staff can be hit and miss. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and polite, though not always the most knowledgeable in some areas --especially when it comes to rock climbing and more extreme sports. Don't get me wrong, they do know their stuff in areas, and are incredible with camping, kayaking and the like. Overall a great place, and it's certainly my go-to when I need something for outdoors --which is more than it probably should be. read more

The customer service is outstanding!!! All the employees are super friendly and very knowledgable. We had Kim as our Salesperson and she was great! We were there about 3 hours and she patiently worked with us making sure we had the perfect backpacking equipment. The store has a great selection to choose from. So many cool things to look at. We would have stayed longer than the 3 hours we did if the store wasn't closing for the night. The quality of the products and the great customer service is worth the drive for us. My Bride and I are getting back into backpacking; we dropped our old gear off at Goodwill and made the trek to REI in Charlotte. I have been in a lot of "outdoor" stores in my life but nothing compares to the Customer Service we have received at this location. We needed everything and wanted to go light weight. We were introduced to Kim and we could not have been in better hands. She got what we were after and helped us select Tent, Sleeping Bags and Packs. Having last hit the trail in the mid 90's with the kids, she filled us in on all the new technology and light weight options. Our second trip to REI was for footwear and clothing. My bride read a review about Al who helped really helped the reviewer in her footwear selection. Al is an outside the box kinda guy, he really knows his stuff. He spent a good hour with us, while taking care of others at the same time, helping us find the perfect footwear. My Bride drifted off the women's and I had the opportunity to work with Mark who I think is the manager there. He guided me through the various clothing options. In short we are all set and looking forward to our first backpacking trip without children in some time! I can't say enough about the customer service here. These guys know their stuff!! read more

Giving a one star rating because we didn't even make it in the store before the manager very rudely told us we weren't allowed to go in. I called the store earlier before even heading there and explained that my fiancé and I have a puppy who just finished training and we are trying to socialize him in new environments. I asked if it would be okay to bring him with inside and that if not we would just leave him at home. The employee who I spoke on the phone with said that it would be fine if we brought him in. Some of the prices can be a bit on the pricey side.... but you know you are getting quality stuff that won't fall apart on you after one use. This location is 2 stories. I spent a lot of time looking at the bikes and kayaks upstairs on the top floor. I even had a nice conversation with one of the employees that told me about their tent sale for members. I have done a good deal of business with the Pineville store since it opened (kayak, bike, bike rack, etc...). I often purchase online at REI and delivery to the store is free, as is assembly, if needed, as with bikes. Wait a week or so and, bingo, you have exactly what you want. This two-story REI has a good mix of hiking, camping, and outdoor gear along with clothing. I'm getting ready for a trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro so if I end up in a city with an REI I have to stop in. My goal was to test out sleeping pads on this trip and I found the area to be pretty well organized with lots of pads unrolled, inflated, and ready for demonstration. There is even a raised platform to test out the pads so you aren't crawling around on the floor. I was browsing the selection and within a few minutes a helpful and friendly REI staff member was over to assist with my selection. He gave me options and recommendations, including his own personal favorites and limitations for each option. I had to jet back to Florida right after my visit so I didn't spend much time in the closing section, but from what I saw it was well organized by gender and size so you could find what you needed. read more

Just walking into this store makes me feel outdoorsy. And let's get one thing straight, I am not outdoorsy. The store is set up really well, in that it's easy to find things and easy to know if you're in the right section or not. It has two floors, upstairs for equipment and gear and downstairs for clothing/shoes/accessories. I went here last night to get a backpack for an upcoming trip. While I was exploring the backpack section I met Pete. He was so helpful with figuring out what I needed and being honest with me. While I was looking, he said "Also, keep in mind that these are all just bags. They're designed just to hold stuff. You just need to figure out how much stuff you need to take, and what you want to put your stuff in." Basics. I like it. I was a little concerned about price and size. (I'm traveling to Ireland and England and want to avoid checking a bag.) Pete explained the different bags to me and why certain bags have this strap or that zipper. Who knew that the same backpack came in mens/womens and small/medium/large? Not this girl. Not until I met Pete! I found a bag that I liked and he loaded it with two pillows and 15lbs of weight so that I could feel it with some weight in it. He showed me how to put it on and how to adjust all of the straps so that I was most comfortable. And then he gave me space. He checked on a few other customers, while keeping me in earshot - I never felt like he had bailed on me or like he was rushing me. (Insert backpacking/outdoorsy selfies here) It was the most exciting backpack shopping experience that I have ever had! I am also now a lifetime member. Apparently there are all sorts of "members only" things going on that I was unaware of. AND they have a "members only" YARD SALE for all of the returned/slightly damaged/opened packages items that they have. It's all very exciting, and only costs $20 - for your whole life. I am now a member for.ev.er. Some of the items are a little pricey, but when they have a sale or clearance - it's usually a pretty good deal. Price aside, I love going here. The people are sweet and friendly, and genuinely interested in what you've got going on. They also have a ton of community activities and a map on the wall of where shoppers and employees have travelled. read more

Had to grab myself a fleece last winter, yes I know...how did I not have one already? So I went here to grab myself some North Face, yea yea follow the herd. This is your normal REI experience, with plenty of outdoor & sporting gear. Anything on the mountain, they'll have what you're looking for. They mainly have apparel & such, with many name brands to choose from. They also have gear & such, but nothing too extravagant. I wouldn't think if you were a mountain sport enthusiast that REI would be your snowboard, ski, or mountain biking outfitter, but maybe if you're a beginner. REI is a nice change from your sporting goods stores that sell everything for every sport. This place just specializes in outdoor sports which I'm a big fan of, so obviously I'm gonna be a fan of this store. read more

So I frequent the REIs on the west coast all the time. While in Charlotte recently I had to make an emergency visit because I had forgotten the inserts for my running shoes. As I had a race that week, I had to get replacements and quickly. At first I called around to places close to my hotel. They had no idea what super feet were and just generally annoyed me. When I called REI though, the person I spoke to was very pleasant and knew exactly how to help me. She even put the exact size and product at the front of the store so I could just run in and run out. Anyone who knows me knows that I love to shop so I decided to stay a while and see what kind of shoes they had. The gentleman who helped me was fabulous. REI is known for having some of the best customer service. Their employees are knowledgeable about the products and help you find whatever it is that you are looking for. Plus they have a great return policy. You wore it, you hated it, you return it and get a full refund. I love REI, on the west coast and the south east. read more

Hard to review. My experience in the store is always good. I like the bike department folks. The shoe selection is great. My fundamental problem with REI is their weird shipping patterns and delays. I don't think I have ever ordered anything from REI and it take less than a full week to arrive. Recently ordered a bike. Didn't make the first delivery date due to a "delay" of another entire week. I spoke with support and they said they don't have a system in place to inform customers when their orders are delayed and leave it to the customers to just "find out"...... In today's world when I can order from Wal-Mart, Dicks, Target, Amazon and receive those orders in 24-48 hours, this is unacceptable. read more

The selection at the Pineville NC REI store is almost unending, something for every sport and lots of hiking gear ( which we love ). The staff is very friendly and helpful, no pressure to buy. Relaxed atmosphere. We like that the REI points never expire and can be used at any time, any year. We have used them to buy lots of our hiking jackets and boots. The selection of tents is almost addictive, I have four from there now, who needs that many? : ) My wife often asks....and I smile, me. I think we all know their products are great, but for me, what makes this particular store great, is the service. We recently went in looking for a carseat attachment for our BOB stroller. We found the item we were looking for but before purchasing an associate pointed out that this particular model only fits newer strollers, built in 2011 or later. Good to know - saved us some cash and a return trip since our stroller was either a 2008 or 2009 model. The associate then called the stroller vendor (BOB) on our behalf without us even asking him to, to see if there was another carseat adapter sold somewhere else that was compatible with an older BOB stroller. Maybe it was a slow day and the associate was bored, I don't know, but I really doubt it. We've had similar experiences in here before. Bravo REI. Love this place. read more

I was surprised and pleased when they opened this store in Pineville, NC and, even though it had been years since I'd shopped REI, they still had my membership on file from when I joined in the late 80s! I still have my first REI down mummy bag that I bought at the REI in Carson (now Malibu, I guess), California back in the late 80's. I no longer use the bag but it's STILL in excellent condition and I just can't get rid of it! I still have a stylish fleece vest and a couple other things I purchased around the same time, also still in great shape. I no longer have these but I bought my very first backpack (an external frame backpack, LOL!), first down jacket, and first pair of hiking boots at the Carson REI. Man, those were really good times. OK, back to the present...REI has changed a bit since the days I used to frequent the first Southern California location...I mean that store in Carson, CA looked like a wearhouse and you'd walk in a there was all this cool outdoor gear...but they still have all the great clothing, outdoor gear, accessories, and a nice, big selection of shoes! And as always, the REI people are friendly and very helpful. I love wandering around the store and checking out everything, and I usually find something that I can't live without! I also like that I can shop REI online and, since we now have this store in Pineville, I can return an item to the store (if a return is necessary) with no problems at all! read more

Man, I love this store. I'm an avid hiker, so I usually visit REI when I need hiking shoes, boots, pants, gear, etc. Their prices are a little high, but this is definitely a case of paying for what you get. The items I've bought from REI have held up for going on a decade now. My favorite part of REI is their customer service. They don't pester you, but if you need help, the staff are actually experts in the departments they're working in. These are outdoor people who routinely use and test the items they're selling, and they give great advice when you're trying to make a decision about an item. When I bought hiking boots, they were able to help me narrow down what I'd like based on my foot shape, and then they let you walk on a rock to replicate walking outdoors. My foot size was right on the edge of the sock sizing, and I wasn't sure whether to go up or down... so they let me try on the socks. I needed some waterproof hiking pants, and I'd found some online; when I asked where they were in the store, the woman showed me right to them and suggested some others that might be even better (and cheaper). I could keep going, but you get the picture. REI is pretty awesome. read more

I prefer this REI over any other in the Charlotte region. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and they want you to find the right gear and materials that you need. They're not just trying to push you to buy the most expensive brand or to buy things that you don't necessarily need. I want to give a special kudos to Al in shoes - this guy knows his stuff! I went in one day to look for a pair of new hiking shoes. I told him the specks that I wanted and said I preferred a lightweight trail runner over a boot. Al went above and beyond what I expected! He never tried to pressure me into changing my mind to go with a boot - which some sales people have done before. He said to go with what you're comfortable wearing! He re-measured my feet (turns out I've been wearing the wrong size), brought me quite a few options to try on, showed me some better lacing techniques for hiking, and added in some other tips and tricks for a more comfortable wear. I cannot stress enough that he changed the overall way I think about buying shoes now. I'll keep going back to him for my trail runners and other shoe needs for as long as he's there. I love this REI. We go here all the time and hit the sales racks first for great bargains on all the best yoga and hiking gear at deep discounts. Even boots and runners shoes. But if you want an experts opinion on camping, hiking, outdoor equipment, bikes, etc, this is the place. My favorite REI expert is Al in the Shoe area. He has been there for years and is an avid hiker/runner outdoorsman. He is my go to guy for everything. If you like the store become a member with a one time membership fee you will get a 20 percent off card once a year and 10 percent of what you spent for the year back.
