(not a fan of The Collection) if you're lucky you can find a parking spot on the street near the entrance but you have to pay at the meter otherwise park in the structure behind the building and walk so if you're in a hurry? They have a good selection and the area is easily accessible, but the staff is rude and consistently high. I tried to buy a pair of climbing shoes at this location and was interrupted by a man who clearly smoked a joint before coming to work. He couldn't answer any questions about the shoes but also would not leave me alone. It is worth noting the shoes appeared used as well. I asked if there were any shoes in better condition (new) in the stock room but he simply ignored the question and started rambling incoherently about other customers walking around the store. It was an annoying and disappointing encounter. I ended up just buying a map and the same guy fumbled his way through ringing me up for quite a while. While legal in California, perhaps use of cannabis in a work environment should be somewhat moderate? I ended up buying the shoes directly from La Sportive. Paying an extra $20 for shipping is worth not having to deal with these guys. read more

We have REI in Tampa, and have been to the one in Albuquerque, but this was our first time in Oxnard. We were impressed with the friendly personnel - especially Miguel. He helped me find a pair of hiking boots that fit perfectly. They were in the clearance section, which made them an exceptionally fine value. Eric at the register was super helpful. He told me about the membership promotion that was too good to turn down: join for $30 and get a $30 gift card. All of the perks are awesome, too. It was an exceptional value, like the boots. I drove over an hour during rush hour to REI hoping to get a quick machine wax on my snowboard, only to find out when I arrived that the snowboard tech had already clocked out. While that was frustrating at first (especially since I had confirmed the hours on the phone earlier), Gabriel completely turned the experience around. He helped sort everything out, was very understanding of my situation, and made sure I was taken care of since I had an upcoming trip. When I returned the next day, Mike let me know that they had added on extra services we hadn't originally talked about and ensured my board was fully tuned and ready to go. I was really impressed with how the team handled the situation and went above and beyond to make things right. I asked simple instructions about my wheel mainly it's a left-hand drive hub and I wanted the logos to be in a certain way. Not only they messed that up but also left a lot of my spokes loose. So they didn't even attend majority of my nipples... They almost charged you $200 for this whole wheel built! Gentleman at the register made me feel like I was insane for wanting to return a month year old trail runner shoe that had ripped at the mesh area while I was on a hike, mind you they were only worn a few times within the month. Anyways, I was turned down and after explaining my situation, that obviously the shoe had some quality defect. I called the Santa Barbara location and they said come by and that they can help me with the return. GETTING HERE: Located in The Collection in Oxnard. REVIEW: I usually struggle with reviewing a chain because your service and experience can vary greatly from one day to the next. Depending on who is working, other customers in the store, who the service Lead is, etc. a customer could have a 5 star experience one day, and the opposite end of the spectrum the next. But, anyway, overall this visit was a very basic experience. I entered here on the hunt for a backpack, and had done quite a bit of prior research and had an idea what I was looking for. The first thing I noticed is that for the size and layout of this store, there were (when I was there) 0 employees on the floor, at least in the area where I was. I noticed a few employees at the cash wrap, but that was it. I did have a few questions about some other styles of backpacks, but no one was near for me to ask. I mean, I get it. I get retail. Been there and done that. But, in this day and age of SERVICE and the economy, and with everything being avail on the big "A" store, I would encourage local/retail business owners to really focus on the personal touch. Alas, it falls on deaf ears, I know. I found a backpack that I thought would work; paid for it (over $100) and then left. I mean, I do realize this IS a chain store so that personal touch will NOT be here, but I guess I am old-school hoping for the "good old days". It was fine. The experience was fine. Beautiful oxnard and after charging the tesla, I found this amazing store called REI. It is the epitome of sportswear, they have anything from hiking gear, snowboarding equipment and plenty of different sport miscellaneous. I bought an expensive patagonia shirt and have had this for several years. It holds up after many washes and the shirt still has the vibrant image of the mountains on it. The environment is unique as it has an upstairs and downstairs section. Upstairs has the patagonia, shoes and arcteryx brands as they are equivalent to Columbia and North face, however, very exclusive to only the best stores. The prices are expensive however, but the quality is outstanding. The customer service here is great and they have a membership you pay sort of like a subscription that enables the user to use tickets on select items for massive discounts throughout the year. Definitely enjoyed coming here. I ordered a YETI cup and hydroflask tank and they were still holding up well. read more

Stephanie was super helpful with ordering, explaining the bike shop services that were offered and about the REI lifetime membership. All my gear, tents, sleeping bags, backpacks clothes , shoes etc. A couple years ago.i bought then$130 Kuhl convertable hiking pants. I wore the for the second time last week. The developed a tear, not from snagging on anything, because I didn't, the second time I wore them. They are still like brand freaking new. They refused to return them. This REI is huge! Although it is a very large store, we found their inventory in several areas to be rather lacking. They cater more to the water sports, which makes sense, given their location. We were looking for camping gear and clothes. Camping gear is there, but not as much as other locations. There is a large clothing department, but limited size and color selection. For example, we found a hat that we wanted to purchase, but they only had one. They could order another size and color, but it would be shipped to our house and we wanted it for the time we were in the area. If you are looking for something specific, you may wish to check their inventory before driving over. Because inventory is often off because of theft, it is better to call the store directly than checking online. read more

Just wow! That amazing level customer service! This review is strictly on a visit to this REI. REI has every equipment you need no matter the outdoor activity you are looking to explore. Things are a bit pricey, but they have a policy where they stand by their product. Also their staff is incredibly knowledgeable as well. I had first hand experience with their great customer service, but didn't make a purchase, but walked away with something even better. Expert knowledge. Came in this REI literally 45 minutes before closing just to browse some snowboarding gear. I have never snowboarded before, so I wanted to see what board I should use. I'm pretty petite so finding something small has always been a challenge. I looked at adult boards and even kid sizes. These measurements on boards were foreign to me. Decided to ask for some help. I forgot her name, but she works in the winter sport gear department . She was so helpful and nice. She kindly helped measure me for a board size. Sadly they didn't have a lot of shorter boards in stock at the store, but she told me what range of the board size I should be in. She even helped to check online to see if any of the other stores would have the board that would fit my size. None of stores carried the board size that would be in range. At this point I wondered if maybe snowboarding isn't for me or should I just carve one out of a tree myself?!? Just when all hope was lost she then found a board on the online store on the REI website. Keep in mind it was closing time, she still hasn't given up on me. No pressure to buy right then and there, but she says that board in the website would definitely be in my range. She also explained that if I wasn't satisfied with the online purchase I can always return in store for a full purchase price. I walked away without a snowboard that night, but with knowledge of how to measure for a board and what size board I can use. read more

It might not be the best summer job for REI employee William if he doesn't retrain. I went here for the first time with my wife to get hiking shoes. In response to my request for assistance, William said he would get back to me after helping a customer and if someone else passes by they can help which never occurred. My wife and I were ignored while he assisted other customers and never acknowledged or checked on us after assisting others. There was definitely some form of prejudice here and we were probably viewed as cockroaches. It was only me who was able to find a pair with no assistance, while my wife was unable to do so. Due to our frustration, we cashed out my pair since it was on sale. The cashier, Mark, apologized for our experience and showed empathy. We visited the REI specifically looking for jackets and then we were going to look for shoes for an upcoming trip. I wear a size 11 in women's, which is not always easy to find and we were looking for something very specific for our shoes. We needed waterproof. Abby was the most helpful, attentive employee we could have ever imagined working with, she fully understood the assignment! I told her what size I was, and what I was looking for and she made her recommendations and suggested a couple of certain shoes and even found waterproof shoes that were the most comfortable thing I've ever put on my feet! 10 out of 10 would work with Abby again in a heartbeat. This is a 2 story REI located in The Collection, an outdoor mall in Oxnard. I stopped here on a Sunday afternoon after eating at Whole Foods in The Collection. I was impressed w how nice this REI is and how much merchandise they have. My neighborhood REI in Henderson is nowhere near as upscale as this location, nor does it seem as nice and organized. One thing I noticed here is the day /back pack selection is huge! Sooooo many to choose from and try on. The service wasn't very friendly though, they seem a bit snobby here, which was a bummer b/c REI employees are usually a big help and a wealth of knowledge. The best REI for helpful service was one in Oregon I visited last spring. Everyone was more than happy to talk all thing camping and biking w me...that was so nice. Anyways, I'll definitely shop at this REI again when @ California home. Hopefully their service will warm up and open up ... read more

The Store located at the collection in Oxnard is my "home" location though, and I have always found the staff there really go above and beyond! As I was walking and shopping throughout the store I was impressed by the way they have continued to have Covid safety measures in place, and that in each Dept of the store a staff member asked me if I needed any assistance. They welcomed me into the bike Shop for a repair even though my bike was purchased online and not from REI. They fixed it quickly, Washed it and gave it back to me the next morning., without drama. They even complemented my bicycle. The same bicycle that other local bike shops , like Trek and JRA would not touch because I didn't buy from them. 5 Stars For the product 1 for the service I received the other day. Well, I should say the lack of service. I've been an REI member for many years and love their co op brand. Alway greeted by friendly staff and never had a problem. I was In The other day to buy some shoes. Maybe 3 employees were upstairs at the shoe department. 3 older ladies were up shopping before I'd arrived. As they were being attended to I searched for my item. Once located I stood and waited, shoe in hand. And waited as I was passed by one , two & three employees helping these three ladies trying on shoes. So I walked closer to where they were. Thinking I must be standing the wrong spot. Finally 10 minutes waiting to be noticed I waved at an employee and asked " where need I stand to be assisted?" Only to be answered with " why what did you need?" Im holding A SHOE! I'm in the SHOE department! So I held up the shoe & he says "OH, Gimmi a second." Goes back to the 3 ladies who were already being helped by the other 2 employees and asked how they were doing and if there was anything else he could do for them . He returns to me and apologized for the wait. I ask for the size I need and was told " sorry we don't have that shoe in your size" No back room check, no computer check. Not even a " let me call another store check" At this point I felt so profiled as the reason for the lack of service I was receiving I just walked out. For reasons I will never quite understand, one day I decided to take up hiking. I own converse. I've tried hiking in those and it ended... badly. So, I need hiking boots. Having never bought a pair of hiking boots I faithfully headed to my local, friendly, neighborhood REI to try some on and was greeted by Abby. Abby is a gem of a human person. We spent over an hour trying, testing, sizing, and bringing out pair after pair of boots in different sizes, shapes, and fits. I got frustrated. She stayed even keeled and responded to every one of my frustrations with "that's okay, we're gonna find the right ones eventually". I didn't believe Abby. I should have believed Abby. To say I will be coming back to this store entirely because of her expertise is not an understatement at all. A delightful experience and I'm so excited to get into this new hobby. read more

Overall great experiences here. Clean shop. Only wish they had more staff walking around to help. We were there a few times looking for help with some specific items. We wandered around for an hour and did not see many employees walking around...most were behind counters ringing people up. We just had a few questions before making a decision. Third visit was a charm and finally got all the items we needed for our big trip. The staff made sure each item worked for us before we purchased them. They were helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were all set. I have been an REI member since my years in the outdoorsy Northwest, where ski stuff, rain gear, and good boots were a necessity. I was happy to see a 2 story REI open in Oxnard, but now I mainly buy coffee thermoses and camping goods, although we did buy down booties for the four cold winter nights we had last winter. This store has a little bit of everything. I was glad I asked about a specific item I was looking for, because different brands were in two locations in the store.
