Love this place. My wife and I travel the US and can always count on REI to have what we need.

This store is huge and well staffed, even on a weekday. Staff is very knowledgeable and friendly; they approached me quickly to assit. My Asolos wore out and I needed new hiking boots. They answered my questions with ease, educated me about new technologies since I purchased the Asolos. I had no trouble finding the store; I did use a GPS to locate it. It is very close to Tyson's mall but not close enough that you could walk from the mall to the store. read more

I bought 6 money belts from Rei last summer, one of them broke after one trip. The threads came out of clothes and the bag became unusable during the one trip in November. I took it back today to see if I can get store credit. Before I could finish the whole story, she cut me off and said clearly it is more than one use. I ended up buying two other kinds of Travel Mini Hip Packs and throwing the usable one. I will not however go back to this REI. I will just buy online to avoid this kind of nasty attitude from the store employees. I have to say that the rating is really just for the front desk lady. There were two other male employees helped me find what I was looking for, and they were very nice. That's the reason even though I felt like walking out after the unpleasant encounter with the front desk, I still went ahead and bought. read more

Amazing store. Super clean. Most friendliest employees of any retail store ever. I have size 14 feet, no arches, this was the first store that had literally everything in my size. Not even Nordstrom can say that. This place is sort of tucked away as far as retail stores go, I hope they do well in this location because it is super convenient to me. However, if more people shop here because of this review, I may find myself running out of choice merchandise. In any event, the guys in the shoe department are awesome - make sure to say hi from me. (At the risk of sounding like a paid advertisement, their return policy is awesome - even if you wear your shoes on the trail, if you don't like, you can return them worn. This is the second REI I visited (the first being in SF) and I gotta say - their service restores my faith in older brick and mortar businesses. I am going on a long 9-month trip around the world and Lou, Will, and Molly were all amazingly kind, very informative, and knowledgeable about everything I needed to get done. I know some people have complained about the employees pushing the $20 memberships. When I first went I was a bit bothered by the questions as well. Usually, when a retail shop asks you for a membership there's a catch. -- As a person that never joins store memberships I AM GLAD I DID THIS TIME. You get a check for 10% back on all the things I buy PLUS easy access to all your receipts for returns at any store (no paper one needed) AND a 1-year return policy. No catch, no problems. I tested out a bag I bought in the SF REI last week on my recent trip to DC. I realized it wasn't a great fit and when I went into VA store I had no problems getting refunded for the one I had and getting help finding a better one. Every visit in any city has been a one of learning and delight. I think with the membership, return policy and service this is a very well valued place to shop. Big location so it has everything you would need. Tons of stuff on sale if that's what you're looking for. Customer service was good but not great. There were a lot of people working but they didn't have the most in-depth knowledge. Not the best location and you always have to test your luck with traffic in the Tysons area but somewhere I would go back to. read more

Given I've been to many REI's it's hard to give it a five stars. Most of the stuff they carry is the same stuff, the staff is all friendly, and they have really cool deals for members every now and then. I have always been a fan of REI. This particular location is their newest one and thank God it came - driving to Fairfax started to take its toll on me. The only thing about this location is finding it. It's a bit off the main road and unless you know where you are going you can miss it. You can't even see the REI sign from any main road. It's behind the Dunkin Donuts shop, just drive past it a bit and it will be on your left. Good selection of stuff, a bit pricey at times, but the quality makes it worth the investment in the end. read more

This is generally a solid REI, but an interaction with the store manager today prompted this bad review. I was returning an unused helmet that I had ordered with my 20 off coupon and he told me that I could only use it again if I purchased another helmet. When I got home, I searched REI's policy on this and they clearly allow the member coupon to be reused as long as you're still within the sale period. So apparently this manager has gone rogue from company policy and makes up his own store rules. What a donkey! I'll be using other locations from here on out. read more

Visited the store to purchase hiking gear for the family. Sean was great and provided expert knowledge on the different types of hiking gear. I purchased several hiking shoes and everyone at the shoe department were amazing. I did not get everyone's name, but Will and the other 2 gentlemen were awesome. One of them contacted the other REI location in Fairfax to hold an item for me. We also purchased clothing and everyone in the clothing department provided outstanding service. Ordered a bike and requested that the brakes are switched sides, guy in bike department was rude and said no. Every other bike I have bought from other stores has done this when they build it so I don't see why I have to pay aftermarket for something that could be done during the build. My favorite REI. I live about an hour away so it's hard to visit often. The staff is very knowledgeable. I bought majority of my hiking gear from them. They helped me do a pack shake down before my thru hike. Ive had all my gear for over a year now and it is still in good shape. read more

I walk into the store asked a sales associate where were the Gore-Tex jackets? I was told they were down stairs okay cool. I get down stairs, and a older white lady said "Can I help you " I said no I'm good I was told the gore-Tex jackets are down here so I was fine wanted to look. She walked me around as if I asked for her to be my personal chaperone. So after her annoying the hell out of me for 5 mins when I did not necessarily ask for her assistance she asked was I familiar with REI, I said "Yes, I have a membership" in a straight forward tone. Then she finally got the point she was being a Dick. Bottom line I was the only African American inside the store, and I will not be coming back here again. I will let friends know what happen when I came to this location, that I also know shop here exactly the disgusting way I was singled out while I was just looking for a Christmas gift. read more

This REI is jammed full of lots of things that I love! This location is fairly big, and has two levels. Its sort of hidden, but once you find where its located access is easy which cant be said for other spots in Tysons. They have extensive winter sports outer wear, and I just bought a snowboard helmet from here that was nicer than all the helmets that I have seen at stores that are exclusive for skiers and snowboarders. They also have a great selection of footwear. I got a really awesome pair of Sorrel boots here just in time before the cold kicked in. I'm not a camper, but the do have a ton of camping gear. I feel like the women's clothing that they choose to stock isn't to my taste at all, but I tend to favor brands like Underarmour and Adidas which rei either doesn't carry or carries very little of. Also, I probably wouldn't go to REI to buy a bike since they mostly carry a brand that is theirs only, and isn't one of the better known brands as far a performance goes. The staff has always been very helpful, attentive, and even funny. They have always scrambled around for products I couldn't find or request as well. I also love that I get cash back- If you spend a decent amount which is easy to do you definitely see a return. read more

Long time member of REI. Going on 20+ years. They have changed their policy and no longer stand behind their products passed one year and a day (so I was informed today). Tried to return Sahara Convertible pants (my favorite hiking shorts) for an exchange. Was told I could not because it was passed a year. I had been mending (sewing) them so they would hold up for the last six months. They are not the quality they used to be. Shame on me for waiting passed one year to seek an exchange. Was not aware they changed their policy. So I went across the street to LL Bean Tysons and found a nicer pair of convertible hiking pants with a 100% satisfaction return policy should my pants ever fail......."ever." Now I must ask, what investment would you rather make? Seems silly to turn a loyal customer away after 20 years and $1000s spent on hiking, camping, and winter apparel. Could they not see that on my membership profile on the computer screen in front of them? Could they not make their own judgement call? The front desk supervisor was not the least phased by my plea or my loyalty. No more. read more

REI is not cheap period, even their sales are not the greatest. BUT they carry high quality items and the sales staff if excellent. We spend probably 2 hours buying hiking shoes and learned a lot for the very patient and knowledgeable sales staff. read more

REI employee this store from Baileys store 45 minutes in advance to confirm bike in store to test ride. Gave my name so they would be prepared. Arrived & bike needed 10 minute tune up. No wonder employees outnumbered customers at this location. Once tune was completed, bike was great & I tested & then purchased it. Would have been nice if tune up had been done before I got there since they were expecting me. But once that was done everything was perfect. read more

This is for the bike maintenance part of REI. I took my bike to have its first tune up after purchasing a nice road bike from REI. It was given back to me with my seat in the incorrect position and a year later I found out that not all of my gears were actually working and shifting. I had purchased a really expensive bike and am definitely disappointed in the work and help I received after buying my bike. The bike shop I went to also helped me fit my bike more properly than just the seat height, which would have cost close up to $75+ at REI. Get your bike somewhere that they actually want to service your bike and help you afterward. read more

Nice big store with good parking. Overpriced, so-so quality stuff. Good for buying little things, like Gu, bike clothing on sale, etc. Want a good deal, buy other brands off the Internet or find non-chain, small business shops. Most REI clothing is super overpriced. If you like chains, go to Dicks for a better deal. Sales staff at Tysons is weird. Some of them are nice and normal, but about half are humorless, OCD, borderline combative (like it would not take much to set them off) and just a little off like the anti-depressants did not quite kick in. First, let me say that until this week; I did not know that REI even had a Tyson's location. I'd always driven to the Fairfax Corner location which seemed to be less fun to get to. After not being able to get the pair of shoes that I wanted at LL Bean and a winter jacket that didn't measure up; I went to REI which is a couple of blocks on the other side of the mall. They're a nice sales guy fitted me with a pair of Merrells and they fit like a glove. That was earlier this week so today I went back in search of a rain jacket and an insulated winter jacket. A sales guy by the name of Thanh explained the differences in the jackets and answered all of my questions and I had a few. Thanks to Thanh; I left with a nice rain jacket and ordered an insulated jacket that will be delivered to my home. As with other REIs, this is a great place for gear for outdoor activities, staffed with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people. I think this store has a larger clothing section than most, particularly for kids. (I don't usually have any cause to notice kidswear so it's possible I've just missed the sections at other REIs, but the large section here is very visible as you head down the stairs to the clothing area.) Otherwise, I thought the gear was basically what you see at the other stores, although with perhaps a little less of the non-clothing things on the main floor, possibly necessitated by the gap for the stairs. read more

I drove all the way to this REI from Derwood MD, as the Rockville location is very small. This location is not as big as some I'm used to going to in CA and CO, but close. The salespeople here were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. read more

This store is great; its always empty and brand new. Huge parking lot and friendly staff, much better than the other locations in DC Metro.

Good enough in all honesty but really REALLY hard to find. They are trying to get more signage. If they cut down the trees on 123 then the sign could be easily seen. The store itself is laid out well with bike and climbing gear up top and appareal down in the bottom. Staff seem charming and a little tired of hearing "It was really hard to find you". However this is a great addition to the area as it provides an option for tyson residents and surrounding towns that isnt a 30 to 40 minute drive away. Cant wait to see what events they will have here. read more

I really enjoy this store. They have an awesome selection of outdoor equipment and clothing. I try and buy all my gifts here when possible. Get the membership not only do u get an instant discount but you collect dividends on anything you spend there thought the year and get 10% back. Membership also gets you exclusive sales and garage sale events. The boot salesmen were total tool bags. They were more concerned with telling me how many miles they hiked last year and why they were such boot experts. I don't care how many miles those nerds have hiked, I just wanted to get a quality boot without having to listen to their useless jibberish, if they'd actually listed they'd probably realized I knew exactly what I wanted. I don't think it matters which REI store you go to, they will always give you a hard time about membership. Honestly is it too much to ask that I go in to get one specific item and just pay for it without having to listen to a 10 minute speech trying to guilt trip me into getting membership? They ask you if you have membership, and when you say no, instead of asking you if you're interested in the benefits of membership (which then would've allowed me to decide for myself whether I was interested instead of subject me to the following), they go right on ahead with all the perks about how it's an employee owned business (I think that's great, but really, that doesn't change my mind about not wanting to pay $20 because I only come to this place once in a blue moon - wells after this experience, I'll avoid it at all cost. I'll buy online if I absolutely have to!). When after being polite and not interrupting them (because really I don't think she even paused for a moment to let me speak so it wasn't really a choice), I declined, in which I'm given a disapproval look (completely ruined any kind of pleasant shopping experience I might of had) and of course a little bit of attitude. Thanks, but no thanks. Do I really have to pay an extra $20 for the right to be rung out in a nonjudgmental manner? read more

This place is sporting goods heaven. My husband and I are gearing up for a big outdoor adventure, and we basically spent an entire day here getting outfitted. Junior helped us with hiking boots and was very patient with us. They have an actual incline/ fake rock you can walk up and down which sounds silly but is actually extremely helpful when you are trying to decide on boots. Julianne literally spent hours with us helping us get all the clothing we needed. She listened to what we wanted and talked through our preferences. She is phenomenal. Lou was also incredibly helpful with picking out backpacks. I am now an enormous fan of this place and will come back here any time I need anything for any outdoor activity. I have already been back once. This is not just a store, the people here are so knowledgeable, you do not get service like this anywhere anymore. read more

Employee knowledge and customer service is always great. This is a huge store. Store is not on the beaten path but is just a few blocks from Tyson's mall. Access in and out of the store is great with the traffic light on International Dr & Fletcher St (Silver Diner) and parking is always available. REI Tyson's staff is great!
