Overall a fantastic experience picking up a new bike. REI offered a competitive (read: best) price on a single speed beach cruiser that I've been considering for a while now. I purchased it on line, notified the next day the bike was ready and walked in a few days later with a few accessories that they happily installed at no additional charge. The bike rides like a dream and I especially appreciated their (esp. Will's) workmanship and attention to detail before releasing the bike to me on its maiden ride. Bonus points that during the first year I can Drop into to - any - REI store and request adjustments to keep the components running smoothly. Highly recommend! read more

Went to REI to see if we could get a bicycle helmet strap repaired - it needed a clasp. They weren't able to do the repair but Brian (Australia) went out of his way to look for a possible replacement part, found an all purpose clasp that would work and broke open the package to make sure it was the right size. Customer service doesn't really get any better than this. read more

However there was only one associate working in the shoe department with about 15 other customers around. Though majority of them were already trying sizes, the one associate just flat out ignored me until I had asked for help. I brought back shoes that were defective. Was told that they were two used to return even though I had just bought them in July. The reason they looked bad is because they were falling apart. REI has a policy of 100% satisfaction guaranteed and does not exempt defective material from returns. Yet they refused and the cashier had the audacity to tell me "maybe this product isn't for you because you have returned ones like it before". Guess what, the shoes that I returned previously were also defective. Be very careful because apparently now REI is banning some customers from doing returns altogether. They do not honor their policies and they tried to gaslight me for having an issue. It's easy enough to shop with other companies which I will be doing from now on. REI is clearly in financial decline and they want to put that burden on their customers. Yes I just got done reading how REI is suffering financially. It sad to see them take that out on those that have actually done business with them for decades. Guaranteed this company is not going to survive, especially under its current leadership. He took a lot of time with me to explain the options and was very patient. When they didn't have what I wanted in store, he found what I wanted on-line. The service here is the best in DMV.... hands down, period. My daughter and I were going on a trip to Iceland and needed to get outfitted out of season. Three separate employees helped us with proper footwear, socks, under gear etc for snowmobiling on the glaciers. They dug in the back until they found the perfect sized coats for arctic type windy temperatures. It all worked! We were warm, dry and comfortable the entire trip. Really disappointed. They closed off the shoe section and I stood around and waited and waited and no one helped me. No one even acknowledged my existence. As a long time shopper and member I was really really offended since they had a lot of staff on hand but it seemed like they were only helping the Caucasian customers. Do not come here for bike repairs. I brought a bike in because its pedal threads were stripped on both sides. It clearly stated on the work order that both sides needed work, but when I received the bike, only one side had been fixed. When I called to complain, they told me they could get the other side done at full price if I brought it in. While I normally try not to expect any kind of discount, the price difference would have justified me buying a membership to receive a discount on all the work done in the first round. Also I already waited days for the initial work to be done, so if I'm paying full price I'd rather pay somebody who didn't mess it up already. The person I was on the call with just lectured me about how the second thread replacement wasn't listed in the order under parts or under notes to customer, so really it was my fault, even though it clearly stated "Right pedal is loose. Left pedal is tight and can't be removed" in that exact same work order under Special Requests from Customer. To their credit, I had another bike brought in that they did perform the 1 request I had on, as well as another needed repair. As a side note, I suspect the cashier was trying to avoid the work of signing me up for a membership. When I said I don't have a membership number, another worker was shocked, but the cashier was waving him off and insisting "No membership number" and seemingly trying to avoid the topic. (However, take this with a grain of salt cause this is just how I read the situation, but there were other nuances to support my belief) read more

I love everything about this chain! I think its common knowledge that REI is a one stop shop for most fitness needs, supports the substantial DMV cycling community, and focuses on outdoor adventurers. They cater to all fitness stages from novice to expert level. They also have ads featuring people with average body types, not just the top tier athlete, which adds to their inclusive vibe. I've patronized this location in particular many times. At various times of the day, I drop in to purchase fitness trackers, sleeping bags, hiking & running apparel, and yoga stuff. There's sufficient free parking and customer service is impeccable every time. Well-trained employees make eye contact as soon as I enter the store, smile, and put forth the effort to satisfy my every request. Last week, I visited because my fitness tracker broke during a fun filled night of karaoke and dancing. I delivered the broken Charge 2 in my hand (with no receipt), but I'm a member so they retrieved it. The staff didn't require me to complete any forms or provide a long elaborate story about the mishap. The exchange couldn't be easier. REI also offers classes full of useful info and forums to connect you with likeminded people. Their membership pays real dividends too. Unfortunately, a few low reviews have dragged this location's overall rating down, but don't let that deter you. Come here. Get connected! Might as well look good as you get in shape. read more

I can only put 1 star or else I would do half a star. I understand due to social distancing things have changed and businesses are operating differently but that's no reason to let a customer sit in the parking lot for 2 hours and never tell them your item will not be ready today. I received an email stating my item was ready for pickup. I arrived and used the link in the email which informed the store I was outside. After 2 hours I had to walk up to the door and ask for a status and that's when they said it would not be done today. No call or text or email to inform me the original email sent stating my items were ready was in fact not true. After calling REI support number they were unwilling to do anything for the inconvenience. Just a simple email correcting the issue would have been perfectly fine but the employee lied and said they called 3 times. I know the number was correct because the support line verified the order by using my number! read more

Store says "masks required" I was double masked as I'm immune-comprised. We just had the the highest levels of hospitalizations in my state. Shoppers were all masked. HOWEVER the two store employees up in our faces- neither had masks on nor were they staying 6 feet away from me, in fact they seemed to want to be up in my face. It was exceedingly rude. Read the room and *think* about other people's situations before BREATHING in their face with no masks on. Your customers are wearing them so should you. Every customers had one on. They have no inventory at all. What shown online is what they CAN order but not at all what they have. The last two times I've been there they have NO stock in what I'm looking for it's such a big waste of time! They're new "we're a co-op!" program feels like a MLM scam, high pressure to join their co-op when they have no inventory to sell! Nice looking store with lots of products. 2stars for the check out line. The store seems full of employees but only 2 people on the register. 2 customers took forever to return things they had ordered and it involved a manager to come over and help explain/negotiate/advise, making it 3 employees, 2 customers with difficult transactions and a line of people waiting. No new lines opened up, no one apologized or even acknowledged our presence so I left my cart full of merchandise and will go to the Fairfax store next time. read more

I was SO impressed by the staff's ability to accurately size me quickly for both the pack and shoes, as well as instructing me on effectively loading and adjusting the pack. This REI location did not give me that lovin' feeling, however. Some weeks ago my favorite Washingtonian and I came here to buy a bike for me. When we told a staff member at the bike shop what we were looking for he made a great recommendation and we special ordered it. When we came back to pick up the bike, the guy we'd initially worked with was gone and it seemed like nobody was taking any sort of ownership in the place. There were plenty of folks working but none seemed to know anything about what we were interested in (car rack, helmet, bike lock). The ones who did know were either clocking out soon or otherwise not into helping us. Since the bike shop staff assembles the bike in-store, we were looking for a little assistance to make sure the seat height was correct, etc. For serious, it was like pulling teeth to get this help. What might have been a 30 minute pick-up turned into a two hour long ordeal. I wanted to knock myself out with a u-lock by the end of it! read more

This REI has great customer service! I came here for my first pair of rock climbing shoes and they were very helpful and attentive anytime my SO and I needed help. I got a pair of Sportiv teal ones and when they basically busted after only a couple of wears, I was able to bring them back (because that's ridiculous, they fell apart like I had been climbing in them for years) and get a refund to go towards a new pair. I got another set and they're amazing. They haven't let me down and are actually comfortable (for a climbing shoe lol). I will definitely be coming back here in the future. read more

My favorite store!!!! REI is the outdoors man's toy store. My husband and I usually frequent this REI just to drool and of course buy items that we absolutely do not need. Oh but what a joy! The staff here at this store is very knowledgeable - obviously outdoor enthusiasts themselves. And the attic sale for members only.....what a hoot! You never know what you will find in an attic sale. An attic sale is when each REI puts out their returned items at a severely discounted price. Came in to check on the bikes they had available as a replacement for my mini cooper folding bike. I could not have been luckier!!! Jazz was assisting me (sorry if I not spelling the name correctly). He is my hero! Not only he fixed my bike, he was super patient, helped me with choosing a new seat and addressing all the safety measures I needed to know about. I left with a new seat (that another gentleman installed for me - THANK YOU), the portable pump (that I was also explained how to use by Jazz), we looked at bike locks and chose the best for the current need and all the wheel safety items. I am a fan of REI for sometime now. This location is the closest for me and I like coming here. The staff is always very helpful though they can be busy during peak hours. But they try their best in taking good care of you. I like their products and also products from other brands that REI sells. Prices at REI are comparable to other retailers too. I came in to take a look at hybrid bikes for my commute and to get a helmet. It took a while for me to get the attention of anyone in the store (hence the dropped star) but once I did, he was super helpful. Tommy have me the full scoop on the store's different commuter bike options and was great with explaining the small but important features that can make or break a smooth ride. My husband and I love this store and have been here many times but today we had a really horrible experience. My husband was being fitted for a backpack which started out good until the person helping him was switched out for a guy that had no knowledge of backpacks or customer service. He never spoke a word and I mean no hello no nothing! Finally, my husband said I will just leave and go to the other store where I know I can be helped. Went over every option , answered my myriad of questions, helped save me money and even went to the water section to demonstrate (and ensure I understood ) how to secure a kayak to the rack. This is a happy place! I am active but not that into outdoorsy activities that I frequent here. It's been actually 2 years since I visited here last time. The staff was all over the store to answer customer's questions and there were a lot of customers during the annual sale but they still had enough staff! At the checkout, the cashier asked me where I was going with the heat i purchased. From there the conversation blossomed among me, staff and another customer.
