Really, really bad service from the bike area - someone that seemed to be shouting instructions to others (most likely he's 'manager'). Regardless of me asking him to stop talking - the guy just couldn't help it. I'm glad to have tested out bike elsewhere, this is the only branch that had what we needed. It's nice having an REI in Maple Grove, this spot is a little smaller than the Bloomington location but still a decent variety. I'm in love with Smartwool socks, I try to find them on clearance through the outlet section of the app and pick them up at the store. Sometimes they have them on clearance here but not usually. The brands are great...nice, quality things do cost more but they also last longer. The REI brand is really good too, a little more affordable than Marmot, The North Face, Arc'teryx, etc without giving up too much on quality. It's worth it to become a member, one time $20 fee for a 10% dividend on purchases to use in store. Something about coming in makes me want to be more of an outdoors person and buy stuff I don't really need. read more

My husband and I go here often to scour the clearance racks. We love the outdoor clothing lines like Kuhl, Patagonia, Marmot, Prana... We both bought hiking boots from this REI location. Service at REI is great. I would say they have a variety of items. I have had many purchases over the last year but still have not committed to joining the co-op, hard to spend extra 30.00 on top of expensive purchase. Pricing is on the high side but it seems the quality is good. read more

I am writing to express my deep disappointment in REI's customer service policies I had an experience at the Maple Grove Minnesota REI after my daughter purchased a gift of outdoor slacks for me Since it was a gift I did not have a receipt nor did I have my daughters credit card. all I wanted was to exchange the size 8 slacks for a size 10. I was told by both the cashier and the store manager that there's no such thing as exchanges and only returns and it's within REI'S policy to deny any returns without a receipt Once again I explained to the store manager that all I wanted was a different size of the slacks.In the end I felt like they were treating me like I stole the slacks from them since I did not have a receipt or my daughters credit card After leaving the store I did call the corporate customer service number and although that person was quite pleasant they told me that there was nothing that they could do because they must stand behind their store managers decision What good is a customer service center if they are no longer able to help or take complaints or deal with any situation within their stores REI pretends to cater to an upper class of outdoorsman yet they cannot provide customer service to the level that most other stores produce a simple exchange for sizes of pants is a common practice in low into high-end stores big box stores and even mom and pop stores I myself am a supervisor for a higher end garden center for the last 13 years and we have always catered to our clients. A simple exchange has never been outside our customer service abilities. Perhaps REI should rethink their policies especially in this days of Covid when stores are shutting their doors I will implore people to think twice before buying gifts from REI I am in now in possession of $100 worthless pair of pants that I might as well use to wash my car shame on REI Signed very dissatisfied former customer read more

Addendum. I posted this before reading the other reviews. I would strongly recommend looking at other reviews as well as people seem to have ongoing problems with customer service at this location Horrible customer service. We were in the Maple Grove Store earlier this week and spent over $1200 on ski equipment for our foreign exchange student. He ended up needing his skis adjusted for his boots. We call today about coming in to have them adjusted. The person we talked to was very rude on the phone. We ask if we could bring them in and wait to have them for the weekend. (we were OK to even drop them off and pick them up later today or over the weekend) We were told "it's not that simple" and it we could drop it off and that we could get it back "in maybe a week if we were lucky" Called another retailer, and their answer was "sure no problem, bring them in, it'll take about 15 minutes" We were in and out of the other facility with the service done in maybe 20 minutes, with the equipment adjusted and fixed appropriately. read more

I have a number of REI experiences including three this past weekend. I went to Bloomington on Saturday to purchase some Keen boots due to the recent winter storm and ended up with a pair where my heel slipped, not a good fit at all. Since no one helped me with sizing I am not surprised. I returned them on Saturday in Roseville only to find they didn't have my size so I ended up in Maple Grove at the REI store there. Once I arrived in Maple Grove I was greeted by a very friendly person at the customer service desk who was walking away to the cashiers but noticed me headed that way so she doubled back to help me immediately. She then grabbed the shoes I had on hold and was very pleasant. After opening the box I noticed the wrong brand was in the Keen box so I headed back to shoes. They were swamped with customers but every time the sales person went by she acknowledged me and let me know she would be with me in a minute. I believe there were only two people as she was taking two to three orders at a time, to get sizes. The sales person that helped me was Linnea. She was extremely helpful from finding the correct boot, to getting me other boots to try. She even went through specs on her portable device so that I could weight my options on what boot to buy. She was interacting with up to three of us at once and doing a very good job of it. You need more people like her in your other stores. Roseville is by my house but I'll be coming back to Maple Grove in the future because of Linnea and the other great staff there. Thanks! read more

I'll start by noting that the store is very tasteful and the sales people are fantastic. They are helpful and they make browsing the store a positive experience without applying any sales pressure. However, the prices are exorbitant and the selection is finite. I've purchased a few shirts at this location that I liked, but I later came to regret that hefty investment as soon as I go home. In addition, I've stopped in to shop for a pair of boots on occasion and I was quite disappointed with the selection. I long for the days when Gander Mountain was open in Maple Grove. I was able to go there and convene with others who lived on the fringe of society (the loners, the militiamen, the separatists, the unstable & bearded fathers buying their 4 year olds an assault weapon for "deer season"). That place had character, a wide selection and you didn't have to drive a Range Rover to buy your outdoor goods. read more

I recently ordered a bicycle for my son online and had it shipped to the store. Early on a Wednesday afternoon, I received an email saying it was ready to pick up. Wednesday evening, at approximately 8:30pm, I arrived at REI Maple Grove to pick up the bicycle, and I was told it was no ready. Apparently their inventory/logistics center treats their bicycles the same as all of the other merchandise. Here's where things start going a bit wrong. I was told that there is something at the bottom of my email that states I am supposed to call to see if it was ready to pick up. There was nothing like this in the email. I asked when the bike would be ready to pick up. The gentleman said, "I don't know. Monday?" I called REI tonight (Tuesday) to see if the bike was ready to pick up. I was transferred to the bike shop, and was put on hold again so they could check on it. A couple of minutes later, someone from the front picks up and tells me it is not ready to pick up. She also couldn't tell me when it would be ready. Frustrated, I made the trip to REI. I figured I was going to either leave with a bike or my money back. Honestly, I was expecting the latter. Once I arrived, I told the gentleman at the bike shop I was here to pick up my bike. A moment later, he's pulling it down from the rack and I'm filling out paper work. One caveat to this, is the bike shop did try to call us to let us know it was ready, but we recently cut the cord on our home phone. But, why when I call would you tell me it's not ready? I would much rather make the trip to Bloomington than go back to this store. read more

Stopped here last week to swap out items I had purchased online. The employees were great. Talkative and friendly. Was asked if I needed help just as I was going to ask for help! Had the sizes I needed and checked other stores for the color/size (which was sold out across all of their stores). ALSO all of the cashiers were super patient with me. I was an annoying customer who went up 2 times; first to explain my predicament! Then after looking around to see if I could try on my online purchase to compare to the size smaller. I was trying to make a return which I felt was not handled to the same level of customer service usually associated with REI. In spite of the fact that there is no REI in my state and there has been very little travel due to covid, I dealt with a very rigid sales clerk on my return. The return was a week or so past the year return date. I had previously called customer care who assured me that this would not be a problem to do in store as I was finally able to make a trip to a state with REI in it. The sales clerk called a manager over who initially refused to do the return. I shared with the manager my conversation with customer care. The manager agreed to take my return "this time" and then continued to lecture me on being mindful of the return policy. I acknowledge that I was outside of the return window, however, it was never my intention to not be able to travel for 7 months. I would have appreciated some empathy and consideration for the global pandemic currently impacting our every day life. I also returned socks not realizing that they slipped so much. I was told to head back to the sock area where someone would assist me...the cashier did radio someone or so it seemed. Alas there was no one waiting for me in the sock area. There were no sales clerks to be found for a while. The same manager who reprimanded me for my return walked by me several times with out offering any assistance. This store did little to make me feel welcome. It felt like since I did the return (despite spending $250 after the return) I was somehow not welcome. Very disappointing REI. If not for the other positive interactions I have had with you over the years I would not return. read more

Normally I go to the REI in Bloomington but after looking online the shoes I wanted were only in stock at the Maple Grove location. Lucky for me Tristan was there to help! After trying on the shoes I thought I wanted, and not particularly liking them, he walked me through different features and had so much helpful information that I ended up with different models of the brand I wanted, Hoka, and I'm really excited to get the comfort and support I need to get moving. If he hadn't taken the time to help I most likely would have walked out with no shoes, although I really needed them. Thank you Tristan! Friendly employees but for some reason can't seem to be of much help. Not up to date with knowledge on various stuff sacks - I would expect that from Dicks or Sports Authority (R.I.P) but if we're paying the premium prices at REI, we have slightly different expectations. But to give the staff credit, he was courteous and maybe the particular products I was looking at wasn't his area of expertise. Had a broken piece on a one-year-old backpack from REI for which the Bloomington location said they could replace from their rental department free of charge. Guess the Maple Grove location doesn't have a rental department because they suggested me to purchase a higher priced 3rd party replacement instead. I declined the offer because it's a universal plastic clip that costs under a dollar anywhere else. An online purchase I made was stated to be delivered on a Thursday but didn't arrive until Friday 4pm... too late for me to use for my out of town trip. This was just a logistics issue - the website still had the incorrect estimated delivery date, even after a day. Went to pick it up today, Monday. The cashier person was running into some trouble checking the item out and called a manager who guided him through some process and advised him to enter the originally paid amount. I was confused when I was asked to swipe my card again because I'd already paid for it 3 weeks ago. Turns out the cashier canceled my order due to a glitch and reordered it. Well all was fine until I was reviewing the amounts on my statements and found they had overcharged me. Had to run back to the store. They canceled the order yet again and reordered at the correct price. Wasn't offered any compensation for the hassles either. The checkout had no lines and I was just standing there quietly being patient so maybe just a case of an incompetent employee who didn't care. This location is closer to work which is why I sometimes go here. The employees (other than the cashier) were all nice and friendly but after the experiences in just the last 2 weeks, do not intend on going to this location again. read more

I went into REI looking to purchase a pair of Chacos for an upcoming backpacking trip in Asia, but I have never purchased sandals like these so I had a few questions. I found my way to the shoes, and started looking at the varieties, and waited. I waited 10 minutes, watching what appeared to the only shoe associate helping other customers. I wasn't frustrated with the shoe associate because it was clear that he was busy, but I was annoyed that I was left unacknowledged. After a total of 15 minutes I ended up walking out of the store without anyone asking if they could help me, or if they could get the shoes from the back so I could try them on. Highly disappointed in this experience. read more

Customer Service center at Maple Grove REI is TERRIBLE. If you need to return an item in your year warranty, go to Bloomington or Roseville location. You should not need to fight to complete a return. Worst experience. I've been an REI Member for 9-10 years. Loyal customer. Bloomington has outstanding customer service center. This REI is one of the smaller formats so you can't find everything you need here. I came looking for a PLB and unfortunately they didn't sell the ResQ link at this store. REI is pretty much one of the most frequented stores for me and being a member makes sense. For a single $20 payment you get to go to the garage sales, get your biannual 20% off and you get a 10% dividend check. For someone who likes to camp and hike REI is pretty sweet. read more

The selection is fine, but the employees do not know how to treat the customers in the store. Today they had three employees on cash registers and despite a very long waiting line to check out, two employees who were only helping customers calling in. Always a bad idea to make the customers who are ready to buy something wait while employees help those who are calling and maybe will result in a sale. After about 20 minutes in line I finally got to the register and could not believe it when the employee stopped in the middle of helping me to answer the phone!!!! I left and don't plan to return. read more

I've only been here a couple times but have been completely happy with the knowledge and friendliness of the staff. The best part about it is that if they don't have exactly what you are looking for in the store, they will be able to get it for you in a timely matter. (Some retail stores will make you wait for a month and then charge you extra for doing the ordering.) read more
