Its an REI, if you have been to one you know what I mean. I joined the cooperative in 1979 at the Seattle flagship store. The business model is sound and consistently applied throughout all stores. They must have good customer service training because their staff is consistently pleasant and helpful. If you need an off season item, go to REI.com and get it shipped to your local store from the warehouse for free or if your order is greater than fifty bucks, they ship to your residence for free. The return policy is based on a full satisfaction model. It is superior to other stores return policies. read more

I never have a bad experience at REI and I just attended my first "used gear sale" and my thoughts of REI are even higher now. I ended up getting two tents and some camp cookware cheaper than I would have ever imagined and the gear looks brand new. I love REI! read more

I am a hard core REI customer, recently relocated from the Bay Area, so I was pretty excited to visit the Boulder store. The greeter was helpful, as well as a woman who helped us in the water filtration section. Then we headed to the watch section to check out altimeters, where I was greeted by Cole. I explained that I was wanted something affordable to track vertical with my son while snowboarding. He kept showing me huge, $600 watches and rattling off features I wasn't interested in. The conversation devolved quickly: I asked if the advance in technology over the years would bring the price down but he kept saying that they don't keep older models in stock. ??? I tried to explain - "like how digital storage costs have reduced as technology has improved" - his steely response "it's not the same technology..." Duh. Really? He was totally unprofessional by his unwavering interest in wanting to be right, no matter what. So this inane conversation with Cole at the Boulder REI made me decide that I'm moving all of my business online. I will continue to work with REI but online. read more

If you haven't checked REI out then you are missing A LOT! I particularly like them as their staff is very friendly and not pushy plus they have an amazing return policy (with no one arguing!). I should probably shop more locally but I have not found the selection and cool perks REI has to offer anywhere else. read more

Love this store! Sales people are helpful, knowledgeable... the store is easy to maneuver, open, clean, great product line. Also, they have outdoor classes you can take in their community room for free. Took an "animal tracking" class last year and an "edible plant" class ... great! read more

This was the first REI I have ever been to. I must have spent over an hour looking at all the cool stuff that they have. Some of the things seemed over priced, but over all I had a great experience in the store. The staff was really knowledgeable and friendly. I was visiting Boulder and came a little unprepared for the weather. I ended up getting some smart wool pants and shirts, which is what the staff suggested. Man I'm glad I did! They kept me so warm. I bought a tent from their Denver store. I returned a tent to this store. It had ripped on a trip we made this last summer. I don't know why I expect a hassle when I return things, but I was pleasantly greeted and the return took just a few minutes. Their satisfaction policy is top-notch. I don't see why you would buy anywhere else. read more

You can find pretty much anything you would need here but dang it's expensive!!! Big and clean store. Great variety. Customer service good. I really didn't like how pushy the sales lady was about selling a membership. We told her no at least 5 times. That's 4 times to many in my book. Other then that, I like this place. read more

I had a problem with a Thule part. Thule advised me to take it to any authorized dealed, regardless of where I bought it. I took it to REI but they refused to accept it since I didn't buy it at REI. I called Thule and they said that I was right to be upset but they didn't want to fight with REI. Thule needs to grow a spine, and REI lost a customer read more

Very disappointing that REI's customer service is not what it use to be! I use to spend thousands of dollars each year with them but overtime I have started to purchase from Backcountry. I ordered a shirt online and when it arrived I did not like it so I stopped into the REI in Boulder for what I thought would be a quick return. Well, first off there was 2 people at the customer service desk. One person was tied up helping someone, the other customer service person after looking at the line which began to grow, decided it was more important to answer the phone. After what seemed like 5 min. or so she decided to finally help. I understand answering the phone is important but at the expense of others standing in line??? After all we took the time to stop in, rather then dial a phone. It saddens me to think that after being a member for over 30 years, their customer service is going downhill!!! read more

Have had mixed results at Boulder REI, been a member for years, but being treated like a serf by the store managers who act like they're owed a handjob just for helping you with an order that THEY lost in transit takes the cake. Ordered a pack online, was to arrive the week before a pack trip. Didn't. Then didn't come when the store said it was to come (many days late). Then the store manager said it was lost in shipment on the way, but alluded that they'd let me buy a pack of equal value from the store if I begged for their graciousness enough (the pack ordered/lost was a heavily discounted, discontinued item from the online garage sale, so the only thing in-store of equal value would be a child's knapsack). In the end, the nasty, curt manner of the manager has sealed my resolve to buy my gear anywhere BUT at REI. --------------------------------- EDIT: Store evening manager called me and offered to help get me going with a pack. Since I had used my dividend for a pack that never showed, they, for whatever reason, couldn't return that to the system. Long story short, a woman named Sahara went out of her way to see me fitted to a MUCH better pack and leave happy with something that will work likely better than what was originally ordered. Then the normal store manager emailed me from wherever he is on vacation (not something I'd do, vacation is vacation!) and apologized, offered to help. Sahara had already dealt with it in an equitable way (for me anyway, probably a loss for REI, which IS me, as a co-op member), so at the end of the day, BUT, only after many emails and complaints, I'm less frustrated and happy with a pack that will work. Doesn't change how a customer was treated in the first place, so I'm leaving the original review, but upping a star for them finally (after my emailing and complaining) figuring out what the term, "customer service" means. read more

It's expensive, and the Boulder store doesn't always have the best selection in comparison to the Denver store. However, they're always helpful. My husband and I both had to return shoes that we bought from the Denver store. They were so incredibly helpful, even though the shoes had definitely been worn. My situation was more tricky, because I only needed to return one shoe that didn't seem to fit right. The woman helping me brought out every single pair of my size (and other sizes) from the back so I could try them on and make sure the problem I was having was specifically a shoe thing. Then, she let me pick the single shoe I wanted and keep my one old shoe. Seriously, some of the best customer service I've ever had. And my shoes now fit me perfectly! read more

It pays to join the co-op. Overall, their selection and caliber of products is better than many similar stores I've been to. You will learn that certain items can be found for much less at other places, but those places won't have everything you need - REI has it all. The staff is generally helpful, laid-back, knowledgeable, and friendly. This store in particular has a nice crew. read more

Review for Ski shop - Brought my snowboard in for a wax job this season (had to leave it for 24 hours so it could get proper attention) - when I received it back I mentioned to the tech that the bottom was cloudy instead of polished he told me it was "better that way". I noticed clamp/vise marks on the top I hadn't noticed in the store and some divots in the top laminate... wasn't happy but shrugged it off, I went riding and typical day and it was sluggish... went out on a powder day and it was barely moving. Went out on a warm day (40's) and it would grind to a quick stop while I had pretty substantial speed built up to the point it was dangerous (almost head over heals). I called and spoke to someone (garett) in the ski shop who told me first I must have rode so hard the wax had been completely removed. I told him I experienced it the first time out. He then told me that they used warm weather wax because it was early in the season (December)??? I told him it stopped on a warm weather day. He then told me that it was probably cold weather wax - reminded him it happened on a powder day... told me that the wood had drank the wax in (????) - I asked him to repeat and he said "absorbed" the wax. I was the told that I should really be waxing my board every 3rd time out. I told him I was a very casual free rider and had been riding for 20+ years and typically only waxed my board once a season (the only real reason I wanted a tune was to sharpen the edges) and have never experienced this before... I told him the bottom was cloudy and I mentioned this when I received... he told me I could bring it back and get another tune and that "people are all human and bound to screw up on occasion" and that they would look into it. I laughed and said sure, then took it to a different ski shop where I was told "this isn't even buffed" and that "this is a hack job"... the tech then pointed out the topside damage I had already noticed. The base bottom was polished & back to riding like a dream My advice is that unless you want to throw money away on a simple job that isn't completed AND have your snowboard damaged, definitley plan on hitting a different ski shop read more
