I previously used a big Bay Area AV/home automation company. I spent over six figures on the initial install when I was rebuilding my house, and after that, every "fix" cost thousands. They had me on a Savant system where even a simple upgrade--like adding a new Apple TV 4K--was quoted at $4,000 because I needed new video cards. I was tired of the "gatekeeping" and not being able to make simple changes myself. I hired Jake to fix the mess, and Barker Tech has been incredible. He didn't just patch things up. he completely updated my network and AV, removed the bloated Savant system, and simplified my entire home automation setup. The result? The first was making sure our garage door is shut when it's supposed to be. So often, I or my husband would leave the house in a rush and forget to close the garage door - or it would start to close then reopen and we wouldn't notice. A couple of times it was open the entire day and we only found out when we got home in the evening (thankfully, we are in a safe neighborhood and nothing went missing!). Forrest's team installed a simple device that connected our garage door opener to our smart-home hub, set up a couple of rules and now the door will automatically open when either of us approaches the house, automatically closes when we leave and alerts us if it could not close for some reason or if it remains open longer 5 minutes if we are home and no motion is detected in the garage. Great! The other concern I had was they one of us would sometimes forget that we had food cooking on the stove and end up with burned pots, a kitchen full of smoke and the smoke alarm going crazy. The Synaptic Homes team installed a device on our old (electric) stove to detect if it was on (or if the oven was on), set up different timings for each and somehow tied that into the motion sensor on the smart wall-switch they installed in our kitchen. Now, if the stove is on and there is no one in the kitchen for more than 5 minutes (we can easily change that setting in the app) or if the oven is on and there is no one in the kitchen for more than 30 minutes (we can change that time too), we get a text alert on our phones. If there is still no motion detected in the kitchen in the next 2 minutes, the entire stove is shut off and we get another alert on our phones. I survived a house fire many years ago - this added safety is SUCH a relief in our very busy, chaotic house! Next week, Forrest's team is installing smart wall switches in the rest of our house and will set up rules to turn all the lights on in the house if a smoke alarm goes off between sunset and sunrise so we can see how to get out if there is really a fire. They say that we'll also be able to set rules to turn lights on and off at random to make it look like someone is at home even when we are away on vacation. I know I'll sleep better when it's all done! The Synaptic Homes team is super-knowledgeable and gave lots of options to bring safety, comfort and convenience to our home (which is getting smarter every time they visit).

Rigo did a great job with the 3 things I had done: replacing an electrical panel, replacing 2 light fixtures, and installing a smoke alarm. He was on time, knowledgable, and efficient. I don't think it is necessarily the cheapest option around but with something like this, quality and experience matters and they did a great job and handle permits and such. They did exactly what I asked them to do and were responsive over email and able to ask the exact questions they needed which made things seamless. This is not necessarily a bad thing but they could have probably done some kind of "walk through" around the place and found some additional work for me. Upselling is obviously not always a great practice but in my case, there were some things that I wish I had done and I think they could have suggested them and left it up to me to say yes/no to during the initial inspection. For example my kitchen could definitely use at least 1 additional outlet, I should have probably replaced a 3rd light, and so on. I do respect that they don't try to take you on a ride but since it is probably efficient to do things all at once, may have been helpful to discuss (this was also my bad for not noticing these things before). Rigo did a bunch of smaller things that made a big difference too like taking out the packaging for the lights and the old ones as well as the old electrical panel, clearly labeling all the switches very neatly which was not well done before, answering my questions and explaining things in a way that I (someone with little knowledge about most of this stuff) would understand.
