Stopped by El Regalo de Juquila while heading to a friend's apartment nearby and was craving Mexican food. The spot felt very authentic, the entire menu was in Spanish. I went with the Burrito de Birria ($13), and it was huge, flavorful, topped with avocado and it was incredibly filling. Everything is prepared fresh in front of you, so the food takes a little time to come out, but it is worth the wait. There were also a few small tables where people were dining inside, plus a great selection of beverages, some alcoholic, some non-alcoholic, and several drinks that you typically only find in Mexican delis and markets. WE KEEP GETTING SICK AFTER WE EAT HERE :( We're local and really want this to be the regular spot. The food is so good, but every time we eat here, we end up feeling sick the next day. Not just "eh, my stomach's off", I'm talking full bathroom takeover. Yesterday I got nachos, but they forgot the chicken. Honestly, that may have saved me. My man had three tacos: pollo, carne asada, and chorizo. We split one shrimp taco. I'm totally fine today. He's not. It hit him hard this morning, and he's been sweating and stuck in the bathroom all day. We gave it another shot because it was really busy and we figured the food would be fresh. But this isn't the first time we've gotten sick after eating here, and at this point, something's definitely not right with how the meat is being handled. We're genuinely bummed about it. This was the most disappointing experience I've ever had with Mexican food spot. My boyfriend and I were viscerally angry. We LOVED this spot. We used to talk about it highly but with every visit the food quality invoked disgust. I used to get the fish burrito and then they started adding artificial lemon juice. Go for the empanadas!!! I will admit that I get delivery from this place, because it is one of the few non Chinese/fried chicken/bodega places open after 10 PM. That said, the food is pretty standard, and I have do not have any complaints about the food. I usually go for the empanadas, because they are super huge and pretty nice on the taste buds. I kind of wish the would provide some type of sauce to really bring out the flavor of the empanadas. The tacos are just ooooook but they are around 2-3 bucks, so one really cannot complain too much about the tacos. I have ordered from this place a few times and they messed up one order (I was given a cheese cake, even though I ordered the chocolate mousse). They pulled out extra tables and chairs since we were a large group, which I thought was sweet. I ordered the cecina torta, which came out pretty quickly. However, they got a lot of other orders wrong and put them in front of the wrong people, which led to confusion. I think they just totally forgot about my friend's order, so she had to go remind them. I enjoyed my torta, although my friend thought the cecina was too salty for her taste. They also give you chips and green sauce as an appetizer, which I liked. The fridge is stocked with a big variety of beer and you pay after you take as many as you'd like, which is cool. My friend and I were looking for a Mexican joint that could equal the tasty cheapness of those in florida when we stumbled upon Regalo de Juquila. This resulted in a Harold and Kumar-esque journey of deliciousness. We tried to order online, but our credit card would not go through, so we decided to call them, but we were cutoff as we were finishing the address. We proceeded to call them for another 10 minutes, but no one picked up, so we decided to get out lazy asses up and take the 15 minute walk there. Best decision ever. We passed the place because of its inconspicuous exterior and when we finally found it, I questioned our decision to follow through, but my friend stood our initial ground as we placed our order for the 7th time that evening. The cook apologized to us, but his phone ran out of battery because of all the calls coming in due to the internet online service crashing. Also all of his hired help for 2 days failed to show their faces. We told him no problem and waited for our food. We ran back home to feast on our $22 meal and we were blown out of the water by the flavors. We ordered the beef and cheese empanadas, which were both seasoned to perfection. my friend ordered a veggie burrito the size of a baby. My chicken enchalada melted upon contact with my tongue. The mole chicken tamales were the best I have ever eaten. They were not dry and not too moist, while the chicken kept its own flavor. Even the rice and beans, which many places dont show enough care for, were amazing. Regalo was truly a gift and you would be an idiot not to go there.
